I can not even believe that Scott got my ticket dismissed. I was sure that I would get points, probably lose my license for a year or two and probably lose my job. Scott gave me a payment plan that I was able to afford. I have recommended him at least 10 times in the past few months. He made a life long client. Scott saved my a**! Thanks

I have had more issues with my driving record then I would like. I have gone to court myself and had different people represent me in court. Scott was the best, I didn't have to do anything. He kept me informed at all times. I wish I would have known him in my earlier years. I would recommend him. I was issued a citation for over 85 , the officer also stated he had me on Radar. I did have my radar detector on so I know I was not clocked at the speed , but I have tried to fight it on my own before and lost. He as able to get the case dismissed, I kept my license, added no points, and never had to go to court. The process was drug out for over a year and a half due to courts backed up and he did not charge me any extra for the extra time spent since that part was out of my control.

I have known Attorney Fitzpatrick for over a decade. He is the most intelligent, thorough and hardest working lawyer I have ever met. He genuinely cares about his clients and does an excellent job for them. I am blessed and grateful to have him and had him for an attorney to represent me. You couldn't hire a more talented attorney to fight for you. A+++++++ all the way....

My attorney has been by my side through the storms in my life and has always been helpful and patient with any of my questions. I have a tremendous amount of respect for his advice and believe he fights for those that can’t do it on their own especially when all they need is a fighting chance to overcome obstacles that hold them back. He’s one of the few that still carries what most have lost THE FEAR OF GOD in his heart. Thank you Jim for believing in me and my family

I was assigned Ms Cutter from the San Diego County Public Defender's Office, 450 B Street, San Diego. I had a very complex criminal case. She read the entire 2,000 thousand++ page file within a few days and knew it inside out, every little detail. I told her she needed to prepare for trial because I was not taking any plea deal. She diligently worked my case for 18+ months and we finally went to trial. Ms Cutter was so prepared it blew my mind. If you are assigned Ms. Cutter from the San Diego PD's office you can THANK your lucky stars. No one is better than her, inside the PD or outside of it. If I were paying her a market rate for my defense it would have run into the high six/low seven figures.

I had 7 felonies charged against my record; she was able to plea me down to just 1 and that would be expunged within 1 year. No time served except the 7 days awaiting arraignment and just a little communuity service. Other attorneys I asked were hoping the BEST they could do is get me on work duty for 1 year. That was not acceptable.

Mr. Boyce represented me in my complex appellate case. After 3 1/2 years and a dedicated effort on his part, the case ended in a unanimous reversal ruling in my favor at the District Appellate and the California Supreme Court levels. I was facing almost five decades in prison and am now a free man due to this outstanding attorney. His wealth of experience in the California appellate and criminal defense court arenas is well documented. Mr. Boyce kept me updated during this difficult journey in my life and described the legal steps in the process. He fights for his clients and spends countless hours making sure that they are well represented. He is the best lawyer i have talked to and I would say the mos honest lawyer I come across. I was convicted of a crime I did not commit because of the ineffectiveness of a money driven attorney I hired, I should have hired him to handle my case and in all likelihood, I would not have been convicted for the the crime that did not occur.

I met Steven 18 years ago, when I was desperately in need of a lawyer who would allow me a little input into my defense and a shot at feeling like I'd put up the good fight to prove my innocence. I was facing eight years. I interviewed half a dozen attorneys, or more. None impressed me like Attorney Maasz. His memory seemed photographic. His knowledge of the law was unmatchable. His attention and patience were juxtaposed to his energy and enthusiasm. He gave me hope where others had me more than a lot concerned that I'd be putting life on hold for a while. So I hired him and hoped for the best. I prayed for it, even. And the best is exactly what I got. We went to trial on a wing and a prayer with a creative defense that actually allowed the jury to see the truth of what had happened. The jury came rendered a not guilty verdict, of course, and much faster than we could've hoped for. This guy is a master of the Hail Mary, and I have to expect also every other defense admissible in court. The voir dire, or jury selection, is one of the most important parts of a trial. Get the wrong people, get the wrong verdict. Steven somehow pulled exactly the jury we wanted from an abundance of jurors who would not likely have been understanding of the facts of my case. I don't how he did it. The prosecutor was skillful, too; but he was no match for my counselor. His technique for presenting things was pretty amazing to watch, also. His manner was such that he shown the ugly facts in a very acceptable light. Then he communicated a deeper understanding of ideas and perspectives that would lead any reasonable person to the truth. He actually used his extensive understanding of the law to achieve real justice. He worked for it. He cared about it, about my future and my life. You don't forget the guy who pulled you out from in front of the firing squad. And you don't forget that he did for more than the money. He won my case because he cared, and I can't recommend him highly enough. Steven, if you see this, I hope y'all are doing well. It's been years, but you still have a friend here. Thanks again for your service. You're still the one good lawyer I've ever met.

I had an insurance claim that the insurance company quickly denied coverage for. An attorney friend referred Mr. Les Robertson to me because he's an expert in insurance coverage and has a great reputation. Since the first conversation, Mr. Robertson was warm, empathetic, and very clear at explaining the law related to my situation. He told me the insurance should have provided the coverage and was willing to help. In a surprise turn, the insurance company changed their mind a couple of days later and decided to cover for the claim. I didn't need to work with Mr Robertson further but I will not hesitate at all to reach out to him again if there is a need. Highly recommend him!

David Zugman is an amazing lawyer. My previous lawyer I had for 9 months while i fought my case and kept telling me I was going to get a 10 year mandatory minimum. When my previous lawyer was dismissed due to a conflict of interest, David became my lawyer. From the beginning, I told him I would not sign of 10 years. He said give him a week. What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
