A first time DUI experience is very jarring and can leave lots of room for questions and worry, but she made the legal process much smoother and easier to navigate. Erica was friendly, approachable, and professional. She made sure to touch base with me during each stage of the process with the CA courts and was easy to reach at almost any time of the day if I had any questions. She laid out in clear terms what charges I was up against and what penalties I would face. I appreciated her realistic, honest guidance on what the outcomes of my case would be. I was happily able to reduce my charge to a wet and reckless with her advocacy.

My dui case went on for a while, in the end all Erica could manage was a straight plain dui conviction. I couldn’t even get a closer to favorable judgement, she seems new, I could have gotten the same result without attorney or a public attorney.

I always felt that I was in very good hands with Ms Jacobo and I would highly recommend her to anyone who wants a caring yet competent lawyer. On several occasions she really went the extra mile to make sure that all of the potential legal options in my case had been exhausted. Not only was she impressive in the courtroom, but I know she put in many hours researching precedent cases on my behalf. She is not only a quality lawyer, but a quality person as well.

I found myself very impressed by the compassion and thoughtfulness Mr. Schneider showed in dealing with all members of our family, including our two young children, when some of the more unpalatable and distressing aspects of the events that brought about the end of our marriage came to light in the media. We found Mr. Schneider to be of consummate professionalism and in possession of all the skills we could possibly desire such that he was able to bring about the most minimally damaging and financially advantageous end to our marriage possible.

Don't believe all the positive reviews you read here. I recommend you go to the court house and see Robert Tayac in action, working on one of his client's dui case. You will see for yourself that you would be wasting your hard earned money for poor representation and a lack of real quality client defense. Robert's idea of client defense is showing up to court and carrying on normal court formalities while standing by your side in a suit doing absolutely nothing of real importance in your defense. You would quickly realize that you would be no better off than if you represented yourself or if you went with a public defender instead. Robert appears to be more interested in taking your money and overcharging you for his services while delivering very little if any results. He may tell you what you want to hear but as soon as he gets a hold of your money, then you will see just how important you are to him. My advice to you is-don't waste your money! DUI lawyers are aware that they are not going to be able to change the outcome of most dui cases. But some would have you believe that your case will be that rare exception. Some lawyers are most interested in enriching themselves from your misfortunes or bad decisions while providing poor defense representation and are unconcern whether they win your case or not. Because they already got your money when you retained their service. And when they are done with you, they will move on to their next case, relying on all the exaggerated unverified reviews on the internet to draw more unsuspecting victims. Don't be fooled, you have been warned. Do deeper research to find a good reputable lawyer! If you have an alcohol problem, please reach out and get help and don't drink and drive! It's always best to accept accountability and honesty always pays in the long run! Take care and I wish you well.

Robert helped me win a domestic violence case where the state had charged me based on the false claims of my now ex-girlfriend. I called him as soon as I was released on bail. He got involved early in the case and did everything he could to ensure I would not be convicted. In less than three months, the district attorney dropped the charges against me. In my case, Robert: • Returned my phone calls in a timely manner; • Was generous with his time and energy; • Was courteous, empathetic, and understanding; • Did not sell me out to prosecutors; • Fought for me and was willing to fight to the end; If you find yourself in a difficult domestic violence case the bay area, I would highly recommend calling Robert Tayac first. Before and after dealing with Robert, I have dealt with other attorneys and have found their customer service, legal expertise, and willingness to fight to be far lesser than that of Mr. Tayac.

I've hired Zach to write an opinion letter to the judge about the immigration consequences of a potential criminal conviction. He worked closely with my criminal defense attorney and I was impressed by his knowledge on the subject. In the process of drafting the letter, Zach was very open about discussing the content with me. In the end, his opinion letter served to influence the decision given by the court. One of the best aspects of working with Zach is that he is very responsive and eager to give advice to the client. He is very quick to responding to my emails and doesn't hesitate offering his advice, even on subjects he was not paid to give advice on. He is also very up-to-date on the latest rulings in the 9th circuit. If you are looking for an immigration attorney in the Bay area about immigration consequences of criminal cases, I think Zach Nightingale is your best option.

Zach has revealed himself as a very knowledgeable attorney who has looked into all details of my situation and provided a fair evaluation. However, it turned out to be a much more expensive than average first consultation. Further, following it, he wasn’t even responding to a simple (yes/no) question. When I approached him one year later suggesting to hire him for urgently needed help, he didn’t confirm or reject his availability, but rather suggested yet another expensive consultation. I hired another attorney who looked into my situation based on my email and additional provided documents, asked a few questions and suggested his price, which I gladly paid, and was happy when issue was resolved.

I would like to express sincere and heartfelt gratitude for the work of Jesse Franklin-Murdock and the Center for American Liberty's extraordinary support in my case. From the outset, when I had that initial call with Eric Sell, and with Josh Dixon – they immediately pulled in strong resources and subsequently Mr. Franklin-Murdock. All these actions and the associated conversations demonstrated dedication, professionalism, superior competency, knowledge, and application of relevant case law by everyone who touched my case but most of all you, Jesse, so thank you! You yourself Jesse, went well above expectation by fielding calls and executing on some key action items, even while on international vacation. Jesse, to you and the entire Center for American Liberty and the entire Dhillon Law Group – THANK YOU for defending my rights with vigor, professionalism, superior application of law, a successful outcome, and for the intangibles like diligence, listening, empathy and that unique feeling that I, as a client, actually matter. I trusted Alexandria with my case. It was a difficult because I had two cases obviously when I was going to court they gave me the grater charge. When the D.A. Gave me an offer she advices me to take it without letting me know the outcome, which was not what my family expected. After I had the opportunity to split the time on my cases which at the time it was the better deal and she never showed up to the court date and te judge had to proceed with the original charge. So honestly I think she did not do her job een after my family paid her upfront.

Chris Hall initially did a fairly good job for me. However, when he felt the case was becoming a money loss for him, he began to distance himself from his professional duties. He then failed to appear for numerous court appearances, including 2 sentencing hearings despite being contracted for all appearances. Things got pretty bad when I was provided with bad legal advise, and entirely misled into believing his experience and competence were much greater than in reality. He advertised that he does immigration law, and yet failed to inform me of the consequences of such during a forced plea entry without notice. That is just a small taste of my experience. I would pursue every possible alternative, and would actually recommend self-representation over this attorney.

This man is a horrible lawyer, as far as I’m concerned he is a criminal, and a bully - he billed my family over $80,000 and didn’t fight to present crucial evidence when it came down to the wire.. He is a liar, a megalomaniac, a horrible person, and I would absolutely NOT recommend him unless your willing to waste tens of thousands of dollars to listen to him lecture and insult you while telling you crucial evidence is worthless. He abandoned me twice during hearings he promised to appear for, as he said he would not leave me out to dry - yet abandoned me day of the trials/hearings and I lost horribly due to his malpractice and misrepresentation of his skill set I went in on my own for trial and was ten times more effective than he was in all three years of his representation combined! I will gladly share more information with anyone considering hiring Wallace. Unlike him, I’m not scared to present it. He has threatened to sue me for defamation when he knows he’s failed me as an attorney - the only thing he did well was a deposition - which Yorker a ton of evidence he never presented. This man is a joke and a hot head - do not waste your money or energy depending on him to do the honest Abe ethical thing. Feel free to message me for further detail and evidence. In my assessment, Mr. Buenaventura is a competent *trial* attorney. However, I cannot give him a positive review. He dragged out a complex multiple misdemeanor case out for over a year. He was unresponsive to text messages, phone calls and voicemails. When we eventually did get a hold of him, he would give us inconsistent advice that just seemed to push the case later. As an innocent person, I found his extremely poor professionalism created additional and unnecessary extreme anxiety for me and my family. Additionally, Mr. Buenaventura seemed strongly motivated to push my case to trial over settlement. He was evasive and dismissive of us when we asked if he would negotiate a deal with the DA. In retrospect, we are suspicious he was financially motivated to push the case to trial to receive another $5k + $250/hr fee. We sought outside counsel and ultimately fired, Mr. Buenaventura. Thank God we did. The other attorney (Mr. Steven Chase) was able to use the expert witness report to get ALL CHARGES DISMISSED before the the next pre-trial conference. The proof is in the result. Ray did not treat us well and was an objectively inferior lawyer to Mr. Chase, by every measure. Mr. Buenaventura receives 2 stars because he was initially attentive to our case and was responsible for identifying our expert witness who was key in proving my innocence and dismissing all charges. I genuinely wish Mr. Buenaventura well and hope he learns to treat his clients with more respect and integrity in the future.

Lewis has represented either myself or my family more times than I can count and has succeeded any expectations I would have of an attorney, he has shown up in other cities when I was far from home, he has held the hands of attorneys I had to hire because I lived out of state, he even helped my sister with a smoking citation when she was a teenager, well below his capabilities but show his capacity for caring about his clients. He is always there when we need him no questions asked and myself and my family owe him such a debt of gratitude. There is no better lawyer to have on your side.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
