As a court reporter with 40+ year of experience working with top-tier attorneys across the state and nation, I knew right away when deciding to pursue litigation on behalf of two sisters who had been badly abused and neglected and fell through the cracks of proper child protective care that Rebecca Roe and Sergio Garcidueñas-Sease at the Law Office of Schroeter Goldmark & Bender would be the perfect people to represent them in their search for justice. Also, Ben Gauen, Virginia Mendoza, and Alison Mabbutt were a part of this stellar team. These attorneys and their staff members were all extremely sensitive and discreet in every aspect of navigating the litigation process and worked diligently to gather necessary information from over 30,000 pages of documents that were produced relating to their case, which also included talking to countless witnesses. In the end, through their zealous advocacy, they negotiated what all believed to be a very fair and generous resolution for the sisters. The sisters are incredibly grateful to Becky, Sergio, and the rest of the team. Thank you for your excellent representation, infused with kindness and a personal touch. Let the healing begin.

My life was destroyed after I was horrifically attacked due to landlord negligence. I was really afraid for my future and didn't know where to turn. Initially, I sought help through other attorneys and was denied. When Schroeter Goldmark & Bender agreed to take my case, I finally felt a sliver of hope. They continued to fight for me diligently for years. Even when they could have easily given up after a judge wrongfully dismissed my case. They provided continual support, encouragement, assistance and comfort throughout this lengthy and arduous battle. Ultimately their perseverance, tenacity, determination and commitment resulted in a significant settlement in which I am able to comfortably look forward to my future instead of living in fear of it. I am eternally grateful to Rich, Sergio, Lindsay, Luke, Allison and all other associates at SGB for replacing my desperation with celebration. Cheers friends, this drink's for you!

Before I contacted the law offices of Tim Billick I felt powerless and very upset after discovering that someone had taken the intellectual property that I worked so hard to create and was selling it online without my permission. To my surprise and disbelief, Mr. Billick had the infringing material removed from the Internet much quicker than I ever imagined was possible. Now I am feeling so relieved! If you're looking for a skilled attorney who will fight tooth and nail to protect your intellectual property rights, Mr. Billick isn't just an attorney you're are looking. I consulted TBillick Law on a complex copyright licensing issue that intersects with trust & estate law. Several IP attorneys passed on advising me due to the complexity, but Tim had relevant experience in both areas and took the time to figure out the best approach. He even did some background research and made calls before I officially signed up as a client and did not charge me for that! He answered all my questions and carefully explained a complex legal situation. I was fortunate to have found Tim to clarify an otherwise convoluted process.

Tim Billick and his team have expertly navigated our organization through the complexities of intellectual property strategy, defense, and compliance. Tim and his team are talented and patient professionals. They are likeable, listen intently, and are skilled at solving problems that may arise in work involving complex intellectual property matters. Mark was awesome! He helped me vacate a misdemeanor so that I can get a second chance and move on with my life. He knew the statute well and how to represent my case. He was very quick and thorough in preparation and because of his bullet proof motion and supporting docs, the judge granted the motion. Mark didn't stop there, he followed up with the court clerks and Washington Patrol to follow up on my case so my record is cleared and the vacated case info doesn't show up in background checks. He proactively followed up with relevant authorities and kept me updated via emails and phone calls along the way. All for a low flat fee! I highly recommend Mark for any of your defence needs.

Several years ago, Mark was my public defender for a DUI case and was miraculously able to make a deal with the prosecutor outside of court to reduce the sentence to Reckless Driving with minimal consequences. Years later I needed an attorney and did not hesitate to reach out to Mark, now practicing from his private firm. Mark was able to get the case closed completely with no consequences. He is very knowledgeable and experienced in the Seattle court system and well connected with government attorneys and judges. He was also very generous with his rates and efficient with the time he spent. He genuinely cared about my well being and I consider him a friend now. Thanks Mark!

At my last meeting with him he threatened me and then questioned my sanity. He was very unprofessional. I am left with no representation days before court now. I have legal trouble for simply moving a tree off of the road! The police seem to have been targeting me for a long time. They have taken my rights away and wrote a bogus report after I was bit by a dog. Just days later they came and took me for my first, "education" in mental hold. After I got out a few weeks later I was driving near my home and to a tree in the road. Somehow with a little help from a man who I never saw before... I was able to move the rather large tree off the road. Then the police came. Put me in "County" jail for almost 2-weeks. Then I got Tim to "help" me defend myself against the tyrannous EPD. He recommended I put the trial off. I never told him y/n. At the second hearing he asked, "Do I want to Double Down?". I still do not know what that means? Anyway he got the trial set Earlier! Then I met with him and he said, "You have a mental problem". I walked out. He has no right to question my sanity. I am completely coherent, get plenty of sleep, and am working now. Unfortunately I just started working and have very little savings to hire REAL defense.

There is no way around it, divorce sucks and so does the family court system. My spouse and I split because she "wasn't in love anymore". When I wouldn't give her everything, accusations of all types of abuse were made. Three different trials in three different cities. Lucky was first my criminal defense attorney that eventually took over the divorce side. the two+ years was long. I thought it would never end. Having so much emotion, I wasn't always rational. Lucky took over. We succeeded on all trials (one didn't even make it to the actual trial because the Prosecuting attorney had no case and bluffed they're way thru always trying to get me to plead out). It is sad that false accusers have no repercussions in family court. Lucky made sure everything was done and because of the history of questionable (false) accusations, he made sure there were certain things written to protect me from future issues. If it wasn't for him, I probably would have no contact with my kids. Seven years later, the kids now live with me. Thank you Lucky!

I almost don't know where to start with Chris Mainard, he is an excellent attorney, and an even better person. Unfortunately, I came across some really challenging times in my life and Chris happened to come highly recommended in the same conversation as The Late, Great, Tony Savage. Unfortunately Tony Savage is no longer with us, but fortunately, Chris Mainard is still here to represent anyone that needs the best attorney in Seattle, because the stakes are that high, because you need to give yourself the best possible outcome. Stop looking and hire him, I promise you won't regret it. He is as good as they come, as reliable as they come, and the amazing part, he is as ethical as they come. Attorneys with outcomes like his are usually cutting back room deals, and believe it or not, I've heard several judges jokingly refer to him as "The Silver-Tongued Devil." which says everything you need to know because you want the persuasiveness he brings to your situation! If I sound vested, I am because I love this guy, he has saved my life 10 times over literally. Thanks Chris, ur my attorney for life - not getting rid of me!!

I recently went through some felony stuff after three years of thinking it had just disappeared. Biggest devastation of my life. I had gotten my life together after that and honestly thought I was going to prison after everything I had accomplished after my horrible mistakes. Kimberly was very supportive and honest with me. Even though I didn't get the outcome I was expecting (or her for that matter.. lets just say the judge didn't like me at all and has a bad reputation) I still didn't end up in PRISON or actual jail for that matter. Work release for 90 days (60 with good time) so I am able to maintain my job and my life. She always responds to me emails right away and, like I mentioned, is VERY supportive. My experience was great and she stopped me on numerous occasions from having a nervous breakdown. I really love her and if you're looking for a lawyer you can trust look no further.

Steve Teller represented me on a case that we closed just today. While I don't know him well (yet), I am extremely impressed with both his persona and practice. He went out of his way to be extraordinarily respectful of some of my differences, and genuinely fought hard for me. Our opponent on the case was a massive corporation that had first wronged me, then tried to deny their wrongdoing, and finally they brought terrifying and unscrupulous lawyers to their side of the table to muddy the waters with counteraccusations and vile lies. But unlike 90% of attorneys out there, I believe Steve truly cares about the Little Guy and he really went to bat for me on a case that I thought was hopeless at times- fighting against a dug-in Goliath with limitless resources. But Steve never quit advocating for me, and in the end we eked out a modest victory. Even though we achieved merely a moderate settlement that was not necessarily lifechanging money, I couldn't have felt more happy and vindicated (and plan to put that couple thousand G's to good use). While I can't speak for how every case goes, or to the ultimate depths and breadths of his legal acumen, this case here did Steve Teller Law some serious credit... And I can't thank you enough, Steve.

I have hired and worked with a multitude of attorneys over the years, some great, some terrible. Unfortunately, I found myself in a position of needing, for the first time in my life, a criminal attorney. Cathy got me through the very daunting and scary situation of getting, at first, a temporary protection order, subsequently, a final protection order and finally, an extension of that current order. When I first contacted Cathy (I was referred to her by my family lawyer) I was in a panic, felt unsafe in my own home and was scared for my kids safety as well. Cathy was able to process and weed through all of the information I shared with her and act swiftly and efficiently in a way that helped me feel secure, and heard. Not only do I feel that Cathy is brilliant, I feel that she really cares. I feel very lucky that she was able to take on my case. I hope I don't find myself in need of a criminal lawyer again, but if so, she'll be my first call!

I have never been in any trouble and in this case, I felt that I was not listened to or given a chance. I know that it’s an attorneys job to represent you regardless but I have to say, without her knowing me, I feel like she did. She went to bat for me and I will always feel indebted to her. I feel like she should have 5 stars! Although this is the most stress I have ever had in my life, Cathy made it comfortable to talk with her and in ALL my truth she made sure that I was treated fairly! Thank you so much for all you do to help people!

We are contemplating a move back to Washington state where we lived for many years. Without proper estate planning we would potentially be subject to the Washington estate tax. n our initial contacts with the firm, we clearly identified that we were residents in another state. We were instructed to provide our detailed financial picture as well as our current estate planning documents which we provided promptly and told that our information would be forwarded to the attorneys for evaluation. The following is the email response. “Thank you for filling out and returning your Questionnaire. I will forward your information to our attorneys for review. Once they have completed their review, I will be back in touch with you regarding a quote for services and the next steps for scheduling.” Well over a month went by with no word back from STIB. I finally contacted them by email requesting a status update. Within minutes, I received the following reply. “Thank you very much for contacting our firm. Unfortunately, we are not able to take on your case. Our firm does not advise out-of-state residents on tax issues. Our focus is estate planning and long term care planning.” The STIB website clearly tax issues as part of estate planning. I also found no restrictions on attorneys in Washington state providing consultation to out-of-state residents considering residency in Washington. Needless to say, I was astounded by what I consider to extremely poor communication and timely follow-up. If it is indeed not their policy to advise out-of-state residents on tax issues, I would have expected to have been informed of that policy up front thus saving us the time of compiling and sending detailed and confidential financial and estate planning information. In my opinion, this represents incompetent and totally unprofessional behavior.

John Henry Browne was the biggest blunder in my federal case. He was so unprepared for trial that the prosecution labeled him "pathetic." The judge also later described his representation as poor and inadequate. Anyone facing criminal charges for the first time might feel overwhelmed and fall into the trap of hiring someone with an inflated or manipulated reputation. The only times I met John were during the initial consultation and to pay him trial fees. The suppression hearing was handled by an incompetent attorney (C.S.) who was nearly ejected from the courtroom by the screaming judge. He fired the only attorney handling my case just days before trial, with whom he had a falling out in another courtroom, later becoming the town's gossip. It's clear now that JHB ensured I didn't have a defense and wouldn't have the opportunity to make a record. JHB did not meet with me after I was convicted and locked away. He told me it was a better place to argue my case on appeal rather than the district court, and besides, he was going on vacation. The judge had few words on record regarding his vacation priority. There were instances of slurred speech and clown-like behavior that made us wonder if he was on drugs or perhaps heavily medicated due to some condition. Turns out he's a known junkie! The case was later handled by a few more inexperienced attorneys, another one (C.V.) to be yelled at and nearly thrown out of the courtroom by Judge Robart, whose behavior raised concerns about his mental stability, to say the least. Unfortunately, it isn't easy to find court filings and transcripts where the public could gain better insight into JHB. Sadly, these real reviews might not do much, as he's enjoyed himself for far too long at the expense of desperate people. I hope no one has to deal with him because your future options may have to be creative and well-motivated. It's best to avoid JHB altogether; nothing good can come of him.

The worst lawyer you can find in Seattle, really don't waste your time or money with these people. He worked on my case for 7 years, I was married to an American citizen, he was never able to fix my status, he just stole my money. I was done with him when immigration once called me to an appointment and Bart charged me $1000 just to go go with me to the appointment and what do you think? On the day of the appointment he told me to wait for him because he was already with another client at another appointment in the same place but then it was my turn as if immigration was going to wait for him, well the fact is that I showed up alone and he never arrived at the appointment. Then I called and called his office, which are also super unprofessional, to begin with, the one who answers the phone is the wife who is not even in the office but at home, she knows absolutely nothing about your case and always acts like she does . Well that day she answered my call and told me that the lawyer Bart couldn't answer me because he had others important clients, as if he would work for me for free... I was so pissed well I explored and I fired Bart and asked him to give me my money back, the $1000 that I paid him because he was going to go with me to my appointment but he didn't go, he replied that he was only going to return $800 since he had gone to the immigration offices even if it wasn't for me. I couldn't believe how cruel he was. But I went with my case with another great lawyer, in less than 3 months she solved what Bart couldn't do in 7 years. I went to my country and in 3 months I received my green card. Please don't fall into this horrible place, they are good for nothing, the only person who does their job is Kara, his assistant. I spent more then 15,000 in 7 years and all he did was nothing You suck Bart

I hired Liz as I was a victim in a DV case which grew to stalking as my partner was also assaulted. Liz was amazing from start to finish. Her process was meticulous. So much so that when the person who had repeatedly attacked me and my partner tried to file complaints against us they were immediately dismissed. What I like best about my experience with Liz, other than the resounding WIN, was how well she communicated with us. Her explanations of the process and what was happening and the potential outcomes were amazing as well as comforting. This was a whole new set of fears and anxieties I had never experienced and her style, demeaner and communication helped alleviate all of that. Even with the process dragging on through COVID Liz just nailed it. I am grateful that I had Liz by my side during this terrifying experience. I cannot say enough good things and I would encourage anyone to trust her and have her as your advocate!

To: Elizabeth M. P. (Attorney) and Christine C. (Paralegal) of the McKinley Irvin Law Firm From: Mark D., McKinley Irvin Divorce Case Customer Reference: McKinley Irvin Unprofessional And Non -Transparent Business Conduct Date: 5/11/21 My conscience will let me go no further in life without voicing my significant dissatisfaction with your professional conduct while handling my divorce case. Early on in my divorce case, unfortunately, Elizabeth's mother passed away. Because of Elizabeth's grieving, I understood and accepted the ignoring of numerous questions in my emails and the very lengthy delays associated with McKinley Irvin's responses to me. Because of Elizabeth's grieving, I did not voice my concerns at the time. Though I accepted these occurrences at the time, I believe the more appropriate path for McKinley Irvin to have taken would have been to switch me to a different Attorney (while Elizabeth worked her way through her grieving). Many months after Elizabeth's mother's passing, however, the same pattern of behavior was still observed. It does appear that this delaying and ignoring of customer inputs is McKinley Irvin's normal modus operandi. On several occasions, phone conference times were scheduled only to be cancelled at the very last minute, with Christine C. citing "emergency issues". Significant delays, ignored emails/questions, and last minute cancellations always left me feeling, as a customer, that I am extremely low on McKinley Irvin's priority list. This is really surprising given that truly successful companies strive to make it a goal of satisfying their customers. However annoying the above conduct is, it pales in comparison to the more serious complaint of unprofessional (possibly unethical?) non-transparent behavior that I will detail below... On April 30th 2021, I requested, for my records, copies of all communications between Tara R. (my wife's attorney) and McKinley Irvin. As you know, there is a line item for each one of these communications in the McKinley Irvin billing system which, as a paying customer, I have been billed for and have paid good money for. My request for copies of all of these communications was met with "I will look into this for you" (Christine C.) and, during a 1:30 pm phone conversation on 5/4/21, "We have a cumbersome document system, I will see what we can do" (Elizabeth M. P.). At the end of the 5/4/21, 1:30 pm phone conversation with Elizabeth, Elizabeth did say she would get me the communications I requested. To-date (as of 5/11/21), I have yet to receive the requested communications which I have paid good money for (and which I do not expect to pay one penny more for). Clearly "do what you say and say what you do" is not a motto which McKinley Irvin runs their business by. It is clear, also, that there is a lack of transparency happening at McKinley Irvin which is highly unprofessional and, I would even argue, bordering on unethical. As a paying customer, to be denied what one has paid for, is absolutely unprofessional. It is perplexing that I have to explain to the McKinley Irvin firm how it should respond to one of its paying customers. The response should not have been "I will look into this" or "we have a cumbersome document system"; the response should have been, "you are a venerated paying customer of ours who has paid for these communications and we will get these communications to you just as soon as we can (at no additional cost to you)". What I would like to have happen is for McKinley Irvin to acknowledge this significant lapse in customer service and refund my money. I am dissatisfied with your treatment of my divorce case. Divorce is devastating enough in itself. To feel like the attorney/firm you are paying good money to, in order to guide you through one of life's toughest journey's, is hamstringing and hampering you along the way, makes it feel many times more devastating.

I used Elizabeth to represent me in a serious criminal case. It was a complex case that was made worse when "Seattle's Best" defense attorney messed up my case and Elizabeth definitely did a phenomenal job fixing what the first attorney screwed up. She was always to the point with me and never sugar coated the problems we faced in my defense. We went after the witnesses medical records and despite the state hiring an attorney to fight that for them we won and got access to the records. In the end we went to trial against the states star prosecutor and she beat him. I was acquitted of all charges. I can't express how grateful I was to have her represent me. She is the first person I would turn to.

Waited for over a week for someone to get back to me, had to call several times and left messages, I used them about a year ago and things went very well. Not anymore. They couldn't find any records of my case, not helpful at all. Not sure what happened with them but I waisted a week for nothing, now looking for a different law firm.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
