Mr. Windle did a great job of keeping me informed with my options in my case as well as letting me know the outcome of the offense I was charged with. He did a great job as my defense in court. He was very friendly and approachable when I had a question or was concerned with a particular issue in my case. I would be happy to use as well as recommend Mr. Windle to anyone.

This Lawyer is nothing short of a complete inept lawyer. Not only did he put me on the stand to defend myself against a jury on a DUI charge. He asked me no questions involved with the case, just my name, profession etc and closed with allowing the DA to rip me apart with questions that were clear hearsay and opinions with no objections whatsoever. Seriously - stay away! I paid him and he got the money as a pd. HE EVEN FAILED TO FILE THE APPEAL IN TIME as requested while i was locked up.

I was being charged with PWID Sch I/II Drug in Fairfax and Prince William for a DUI and Mr Courtnall got my charges in Fairfax dismissed and my DWI was amended from DWI to Wreckless driving and I was extremely happy because I did not lose my job,. Did I mention I was arrested over the weekend and he filed a bond motion and I was released that Monday what an awesome Attorney. My aunt referred me to him as he also helped her with a Juvenile Case in July where here charges were dismissed as well . Extremely busy but very knowledgeable and trustworthy. I recommend him to all my friends and family who are being charged in Criminal or Traffic Court in Both State and Federal Courts in Northern VA and he also goes out as far as Richmond and Roanoke.

I would recommended Mr Courtnall b/c he had helped my Uncle with a Federal Case that consisted of series of Robberies where my Uncle was accused of being a leader of a "violent" hispanic gang which he was not. We hired him 1 day (that Friday and Court MONDAY) before my Uncle was set for a Jury Trial and Mr Courtnall is a busy man but his Office Manager and other Assistants helped us throughout the whole process even accommodating us on a Saturday & Sunday although they are closed on weekends. My uncle was convicted of Conspiracy and all the robberies and gun charges were dropped. He was given a 5 years sentence and we are happy as his co-def all got 35+ Years ....... He also helped my friends Uncle win a Jury verdict to dismiss Murder Charge and lower it to Voluntary Manslaughter and he only got 1 years ... I love his services and his Office like I said Busy but they do have prompt service and Mr Courtnall has good knowledge of Criminal and Traffic cases both State and Federal ........ We even were given his personal cell number and email and kept in touch regularly ...He's as good if not better then Whitestone and Associates and very very reasonable prices

I have known Mr. Baskin for over twenty years, during all these years Peter has been not only by my side when I needed him for legal advise but also a true friend. recently, I had contacted Peter for a legal matter involving my wife which occurred in Arlington County, known for its most challenging and toughest court system. My wife and I were very concern and embracing ourselves for the worst. After contacting Peter, he made himself available immediately and even took out of his weekend to meet with us. Peter thoroughly examined our case and discussed all the possible scenarios. Finally, on the day of her trial as expected, Peter had display a mastery of the judicial knowledge and argued our case to a best outcome! I am truly grateful to your hard work and dedication to everyone of your clients and honored to call him my attorney and better yet, a wonderful human being.

I found myself in an unexpected legal matter to which I had no idea how to begin to deal with or navigate and a friend referred me to a Mr. Peter Baskin in Fairfax, Va. Not only did Mr. Baskin take the time to sit down with me and explain in detail how to approach my case he made clear to me all of my possible options as well as answered every single one of my questions. This was a very unfortunate matter and difficult time in my life. If it were not for Mr. Baskin things could have taken a turn for the worst with a very bad outcome effecting myself and my career for the rest of my life. Mr. Baskin not only won my case and turned around the outcome in it's entirety he made himself available to me for every phone call to which I called frequently as a result of unchartered territory as well as overall nervousness. Mr. Baskin is an incredible attorney and not only will I recommend him in the future I already have referred him to several of my friends which he has done an excellent job for as well. If your an individual that finds themselves in need of an attorney the best thing you can do for yourself if pick up the phone and contact this attorney! He turned around this very critical outcome for me and I'm certain he will do the same for you. Best of Luck to you! Kimberley

Great lawyer. Returns calls, and takes time to meet with clients, listens, and very honest. This lawyer took the time to really listen to my problems with my ex husband and helped me prove he was not a good person to have my 3 year old around. He also helped me prove I was innocent on a bogus charge my exhusband mother brought up against me. I would recommend him highly.

It involved complex and novel issues of law and fact, difficult defendants (e.g. the State of Virginia), and a very challenging emotional situation. He handled all of this very well. While there is no such thing as a good outcome in this type of case I do believe that we got the best outcome we could given the circumstances thanks to Bruce.

Greetings all warriors in personal legal battles. As such, these things in our lives plague our ability to function, sometimes we are treated unfairly...etc. I was told by Mr. Said that Bc of my name, Which is "Casey", that I did not stand a chance of fighting my case. He instead completely ignored the work that should have been done in my case and took my money, only to become a traitor and later cozy up to the CA at the time. He also turned one of my best friends against me, ,and to this day I have never gotten beyond this. This person is evil. Do not hire him. For years I was ignorant to the fact that I could probably have appealed my sentencing due to his negligence. However, seeing that he has gotten in trouble TWICE in two different states brings up serious red flags. He does not care at all about the wrongly accused, he is looking to work on his "networking" of other people in the legal system he is brown nosing with and cares nothing of your case. DO NOT.

Mufeed Said represented me in 2005 and scared the bejezus out of me with his aggressiveness and truly believed in my innocence. Subsequent trial outcome, acquittal of first degree murder. He is definitely an attorney worth his salt. Formidable would be describing him in the lightest. I'd retain him in a personal capacity, if I could. He was appointed to me by the court and I honestly thought he would railroad me but he showed me that I could trust him.

I hired Mr. Wilder to help me with a few legal things. He drafted a will for me and handled speeding tickets of mine. I am a high maintenance client & called Mr. Wilder a lot while he was my attorney. I was also very specific and sometimes couldn't make up my mind; however Mr. Wilder always remained extremely professional, he always answered my questions via phone calls and emails promptly. He was kind and really knew what he was doing. I couldn't be happier. I hope to never need at attorney again; but in the off chance that I do, I will definitely hire Mr. Wilder again. I recommend that if anyone is looking for an honest, hard working, caring, professional attorney they should look no further than him.

I hired Mr. Wilder for counsel in a civil matter. He failed to take any action against a company using virtual offices and other shady practices. I personally did research finding three different addresses for the company and providing evidence that none of these were legit addresses for the company. We agreed because of the amount of damages we would file in circuit court. He proceeded to file in general district without consulting me. Then he repeatedly asked for continuances without consulting me or advising me of the case status. I paid for process server and he sent the service to each of the 3 addresses I proved were illegitimate addresses. We agreed he would contact the federal agency overseeing the industry with the company's identifying information and ask for federal assistance in prosecuting the individuals at the company for fraud after they stole or broke over $10000 worth of my belongings and violated other industry standards and laws. He never did this and then, without discussing it with me, asked for the case to be dismissed because of an inability to serve the company for the year the case had been open. In summary, I paid good money for nothing. He assured me that the company could be held liable even though they were using virtual offices and he assured me that if proper service was attempted the case could be heard in absentia. Through out the year the case was open and my account was in good standing he rarely communicated with me despite my emails and phone messages asking for updates. At one point I contacted the state bar and they instructed him to contact me or they would be forced to open and ethics review. He contacted me on the last day allotted by the bar then did nothing of what we agreed to go forward with.

No matter what the case I know he will do his BEST. I just had 2 federal charges, which were 2 felonies. He had one completely dismissed and the other which was dropped down to a misdemeanor, and unsupervised probation. I couldn't ask for anything better when I was looking at 1 year minimum for one of my charges and 10 years on another charge. Please do your research, and if you are looking for someone is 100% straight forward with you and will let you know right off the bat what his suggestion is, I would go with Jason Dunn. He definitely helped me out more than I could ever ask for! He's very professional and I can bet you he would give you your best deal in the court of law. Good Luck!!!

My company hired Mr. Dunn to handle a time sensitive business transaction, all of the communications were with his paralegal. Each time I called regarding the status of my petition I was told that Mr. Dunn was handling a Federal case and was unavailable. The only communication I received directly from Mr. Dunn was an email stating that he was terminating his engagement. In our industry petitions are usually filed with 24-72 hours, it took his office nearly a month to file a petition, once a petition was filed the petition included several careless mistakes. When I asked his paralegal about the mistakes she would not respond. My calls to Mr. Dunn went unanswered, when I emailed him letting him know that I am about to lose the customer and incur damages due to the delay he let me know that I should find another attorney. He also said that I did not provide sufficient information regarding a change to a Virginia statute, when I asked what exact information I did not provide he would not answer.

The only efficient thing about this firm is the receptionist. Communication is sorely lacking and your amount will be much less than suggested, and not because of lawyer fees, but because they will forget to file a bill sent to them. They cost me $2,800 of my own money. From a suggested amount to my pocket of $7,000 to $10,000 down to $2,000 after almost a year. This was from a total loss accident, not at fault, with emergency room visit, x-rays, and months of Physical Therapy and lost wages. I would have made more money taking pain medication and going back to work full-time than following this attorney's plan. I cannot recommend a different accident attorney more. For your sake, please seek other representation.

He would ignore my phone calls for up to 3 weeks on MULTIPLE occasions. He is on TikTok and he would ignore me but continuously be uploading ridiculous TikToks. All he wanted to do when we got to mediation was settle for anything the other lawyer offered, he did not care for my children and what was best for them. I got charged for a subpoena of bank accounts and they actually LOST the information to view the bank account statements. Absolutely unprofessional and unreliable. I wasted so much time and over a year. I probably could've been divorced a lot faster with less expense. Going through a divorce as a single mom is one thing, but to also end up wasting money and a year of time made everything extremely tough. Do not waste your time.

He was awful and completely show his @$$ in court. I will spare the details, other than what I think was the funniest aspect of his train wreck of a presentation: During his cross-examination, it was revealed that this guy FORGOT HIS NOTEBOOK!!!! He had no notes and had no idea of the line of questioning that he had prepared (not that his notebook likely contained any profound material). He proceeded to attempt to enlist my help while I was on the stand as he fumbled through what little he was able to recall….all this, while I was on the stand, patiently waiting. Needless to say… if this man is representing you… run. He was a jumbled mess, with an ill-fitting suit… his garbled presentation was an embarrassment to him and his firm.

The lawyers of this lawfirm argued this is court "the “unfortunate reality” that teaching in the United States — even for first grade teachers like Zwerner — isn’t without its dangers". At no point should any person considering becoming a teach expect that their future school administrators will brush off an identifiable threat rather than take action. It's a shame that this law firm thinks that teachers should just expect to be shot with a gun by their students. Diane Toscano, Jeffrey Breit, Kevin Biniazan and the school district they represent are morally bankrupt. I will never use them again, and I implore others to do the same.

a while ago, The Manassas court attorney referral department referred me ( for a reasonable of $75.00 or so ) to contact attorney Scott J. Newton. My first meeting with Attorney Newton was great he was very informative on my options to my case that I had won judgement by the court . couple months later I decided to hire Mr. Scott J. Newton and use his services to follow-up and continue my small case. So I went ahead and called his Manassas office, a receptionist answered. I asked her if I could speak with attorney Newton regarding a previous consultation I had with the Attorney, she asked me multiple questions as if she was checking if my case was worth the attorney's time. then i was transferred to a different receptionist, I again asked if I could speak with attorney Newton, then i was transferred back to the first receptionist. I again asked if attorney Newton was available. Her responds was " "Mr. Newton Does recall speaking with you but you will have to schedule an appointment again with Mr. Newton. You will have to pay a fee of $250.00 for your visit again " Wow ! So my personal experience is that, Mr. Newton and his staff are all about their own benefit and not about helping. So I don't think its fair to pay this attorney 250.00 just to fully refresh his memory. I felt this was so unfair, Was it because my case was not as profitable for him ? maybe so..

I was hopeful when I hired Wyatt Taylor to be my lawyer for my divorce. He represented himself as a lawyer that fights for women after he saw the treatment his mom received while going through her own divorce. Based on that story, I felt that he would be the best lawyer for me. Wyatt Taylor did not end up being the lawyer that he presented himself as. Wyatt Taylor did not keep me informed of my case. I was constantly calling his office to get updates on my case, and when I would call, I would find out that nothing had been done. He neglected and mishandled my case and drug it out over years, all the while charging me for every delay he caused. I was afraid to call, because every time I did, I was charged for asking what was going on with my situation. He charged me and overcharged me for phone calls, emails, me dropping off papers to his office, and anything else he could find to charge me for. He charged me for talking with him about the work he was going to do. He would charge me for doing the work. He would then charge me again for us to review the work he did, then charge me again to fix the mistakes that he made because he did not listen to me during the initial conversation and do it correctly based on our conversations. He sent my personal legal papers to a wrong address after he was given a correct change of address. He sent me legal papers with other clients’ names in it. After a 25-year marriage, I did not think I would ever need a divorce lawyer, and was very naïve in what to look for, and I was not in the best state of mind when trying to go through this process. But, over the last few years, I have found my voice and I am able to see when things are not right and speak up against them. The way that Wyatt Taylor handled my case, was not the way a lawyer should treat his clients. According to the Virginia State Bar and the American Bar Association, a lawyer should not procrastinate and draw out a client’s case. A lawyer should communicate with their client and keep them informed of their case. A lawyer should protect their client’s personal information. And, a lawyer should not collect an unreasonable fee or an unreasonable amount for expenses. Wyatt Taylor acted unethically in all of these statutes. Going through a divorce is hard enough, but to add the anxiety of a lawyer that you do not have confidence in and feel that they are working for your best interests, takes it to another level. If you decide to do work with Wyatt Taylor, keep close tabs of your invoices and actual emails, length of phone conversations, and every interaction that you have with him.

To say I was thoroughly disappointed would be an understatement. . Best case scenario, he’s ok but completely checked out. Worst case, he’s bitter and doesn’t like women. It was thoroughly baffling. Didn’t fight for me at all. Told me while I was camping and he knew I was camping that I would have to be in court the evening before and I had to pack up all my things and return from my trip which was 4 hours away. Would not ask for support, didn’t even read through my case. Did not believe me or fight for me. He first told me I’d need to pay him 7500 then accepted 5600. (Trying to get as much as he could) He showed up at court disheveled and it was pretty clear from the start my husband’s lawyer was far superior. Didn’t return my calls and did far more damage than help. There’s something wrong with him. Avoid like the plague, unless you have something very very straight forward. Even then. Maybe he’s better for men. He just went through a divorce himself apparently.

No help here. Will give you up to the lowest bidder. How can you even sit through him shaking to finish listening to him lie and try to convince you he has your best interests? Don't waste your finger strength dialing this number. If it's anything against the court you've automatically lost with him. The only reason I believe they allow him to still practice is because of the cases he loses as a court-appointed. Which violates the guidelines of indigent counseling for Virginia and several rules of the American Bar Association. This man wrote the court and told the people I said I wasn't coming to the court. That was his attempt to have himself removed instead of filing motions that benefited my case. Section 19.2-163.01(A)(4). Model Rules of Professional Conduct.

I gave her my retainer and she has just disappeared on me with another court date to go! My advice is to find someone a bit more reliable.

If you want to lose a lot of money and then lose in court, hire Mr. Sris. Rescheduled my court date and I didn't even bother telling me. In addition to this nerve-racking experience, did not put any effort in defending me in court the second time around. And at the end I had a feeling that he represented the prosecutor, not me. During the initial intake it felt like it was all about how awesome he is and not about the client's needs. Highly questionable work ethics led to a terrible outcome at the end. Just an awful experience overall. Stay away. Do not repeat my mistake of trusting this person. Guys like him are the reason people don't trust lawyers. I wish there was a way to disbar him or at least to give him minus five stars. Just an awful person.

My father has used him and thinks he is amazing. Now I used him and I think he is amazing. He won my DUI case in Fairfax Virginia in 10 minutes. He spent time talking to me about my case and I was so nervous because I go to George Mason and I need my license to drive to classes. He waited the whole day because the prosecutor put my case at the end of the docket and then he took it to trial. He told me he was going to fight for me and he did. Best part is that he won. EW

Mr. Sris has been our family attorney for the better part of 12 years. In that time he has helped my family with a number of different criminal cases. Mr. Sris is an amazing attorney and I would strongly recommend him to anyone seeking one of the best Attorney's in Virginia. Specifically, Mr. Sris helped my brother with 2 misdemeanors, myself with multiple felonies and my dad with an amazing jury trial. His width and breadth of his knowledge of criminal law was incredible. His staff who speak Spanish are so on top of it. He even helped me become a US Citizen when everybody else thought I was going to be deported after almost 20 years in the US. Again I cannot recommend Mr. Sris enough, he will continue to be my attorney for the foreseeable future and a trusted adviser in my ventures going forward. JP

Mr. Watkins did a wonderful job in keeping me informed of my rights and legal boundaries during my case. Mr. Watkins has heart-warming interpersonal skills. He was comfortable with a first name basis going both ways. Mr. Watkins was available after hours and even after the case was over. I really felt he cared about what was going on. How many lawyers actually contact you after your trial to see how you are maintaining. Mr. Watkins is the only one I know. I would recommend him to anyone because he will advocate for you in a very professional hardworking manner.

I would like a refund of the $1500 I paid to you to represent my case. You came to court twice. I repeatedly asked you to file a motion of discovery and you did not. At one point you told me you did and when I asked you how long do they have to respond? You admitted you had not filed it. One court date was canceled and the second time you said next to nothing in my defense and began visibly shaking from nerves. I had tangible evidence of my innocence and you previously told me under the law that I would not be convicted and if for some reason I was than we would take it to a jury trial. After I was wrongfully convicted I asked you to submit the paperwork to take it to trial and you told me you could no longer represent me because you were hired by another law firm that wanted you to complete the cases you were working on before taking the position with them. I have found out you are still in your own practice and chose not to represent me to the fullest extent of the law like you were paid to do. This was a clear violation of your code of ethics. If you are unwilling to send me the fee I paid to you for representation I will have to file a report with the American Bar Association and the State Bar Association to request disciplinary action because of lawyer incompetence and malpractice. I will also request a copy of the court transcript, video footage and documents submitted to the courts for my case to file a civil suit for the money paid for representation that was not earned through due diligence and proper representation. I look forward to hearing from you in a timely manner for a refund to take care of this. Thank you for your time and attention.

My husband hired Mr. Dildy last year for a custody case. He got him to court quickly for the emergency case. After the first hearing my husband was granted temporary physical custody of the kids. After that first hearing was finished is when David began dragging his feet and making excuses for why we couldn’t press concerns and other issues. He would say on numerous occasions that he didn’t like to fight, he wasn’t going to throw stuff at the wall, and that he felt sorry for the other side (mother). He would tell us that by letting the children go visit her and having the bad stuff continue to happen it would only be better for court and would give us more to use against the mother (instead of finding ways to prevent them from going to the mother’s home and allowing the incidents to continue to happen). We had already NUMEROUS reasons why the kids were in danger! We didn’t need more reasons! He wouldn’t use those though! When we would call with concerns, he would tell us history stories and on numerous occasions the calls would end with him asking us to give information to the mother instead of protecting us and the children. We spent several thousands and thousands of dollars BEGGING David to help, defend, and guide us for the children’s sake. He lied about submitting documents that we found out once the case finished from our new attorney, which costs us thousands (and he had told us he had submitted after asking him multiple times). David works when you tell him you are going to seek another attorney but other than that he will not! He will manipulate you and smooth talk you. At one point he convinced people involved in the case that the children weren’t being abused, which was the entire case!! You would be better off not having an attorney, he is a nightmare! He literally works against you and takes all your money. He also urinates while speaking with you on the phone. Thank goodness we fired him! Thank goodness! Our new attorney literally cost a quarter of what David cost, worked 2x longer than him and actually finished the case with having us show up 1 time out of 3 court hearings. I would run from him and not look back. It is scary that David is in charge of helping people’s lives, especially children!

My husband and I hired Mr. Didly three years and every year we won. I hired Mr. Dildy again for the fourth time, due to the child's mom still not complying with the court order. That's when Mr. Dildy said we are going for custody, not knowing Mr. D’s strategy, we worrying, lordy I was. Once Mr. Dildy gets into the courtroom he is in a winning zone. We won our custody battle case, thanks to Mr. DILDY and the wonderful friendly staff at Weisberg & Weisberg law firm. To anyone that may be reading this review be patient, comply with the court order, write down the evidence if the other parties not complying with the court order, and try to get along with the other parties that are involved. It helps the child in many ways. A custody case is a very sensitive, draining, and overwhelming case for everyone who’s involved especially the child. I know this was a long review but it was well worth writing and hoping I can help someone else make the right decision in finding the right lawyer to represent them well in the courtroom. Will I hire Mr. D again? Yessssss I WILL!

Our daughter was talked into signing a document that gave the father the custody of our granddaughter. He did not tell my daughter she could appeal it within 10 days. He scared her into believing that she would never see her daughter again. He also told us a sad story about how he had foster kids taken away. I wouldn't recommend him for dog catcher.

I have hired Mr. Barlow twice now, and he has done a great job of communicating with me and got me some of the best deals possible with the prosecutor that he could have gotten. Joe is one of the best lawyers I have ever dealt with. Joe represented my case very well and drove the outcome of my matter to the most successful scenario and demonstrated not only professionalism and expertise but was a pleasure to deal with from start to finish during the entire process. I felt safe and well represented under Joe’s legal representation and will most certainly go to Joe for any legal needs and would highly recommend him to anyone. I have had plenty of experience with many different attorneys and this was by far the WORST one I have ever dealt with. LATE TO COURT, overcharges, pompous ( and for no reason-it's not like he's good)...He took a divorce case with my father whom has cognitive issues, which he was aware of and didn't refer him to an attorney that specializes in divorces. He saw it as easy money, fast and no work. Don't hire this guy....He also was hired for petty traffic stuff and did nothing but overcharge and still had a ton of fines...worst money ever spent

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
