This attorney was hired to manage an estate. Instead, he did exactly what one of the children of the estate owner wanted done. The estate owner had limited education, and this attorney capitalized on it to push through a plan that was entirely to the benefit of the child. The other siblings were not informed of the plan. Fortunately, the estate owner realized this attorney was working for the child and switch estate attorneys. Unfortunately, there was irreversible damage done to the estate. I would not trust this attorney or anyone else in his practice.

I contacted this law firm for advice on misdemeanor charges and was referred to this attorney, he frightened me into believing the charges could be elevated to a felony and I could be facing going to prison and needed representation After paying the retainer fee he said he would be contacting the DA office to discuss charges and try to get them dismissed but he actually did very little to help me, did not even ask me to come in to discuss the case or details for my defense When I tried to call to clarify information received from the DA office by mail, he would not take my call or return calls when asked so I requested to dismiss him as my attorney as did not feel confident about him representing me it took almost 3 weeks for that to get done and I was still charged over $1000 of my retainer fee When I tried disputing the charges with the head of the firm I was treated very disrespectfully I advise against using this attorney or the law firm he represents

Horrible experience went to a petty criminal traffic should couldn't even call she sent all response in text very unprofessional. Did not even believe me and then said it was best she could do with no priors. Very dissatisfied with her work. And myself because when I met her I knew I sensed a mole.

He is great at telling you what he thinks you want or need to hear but when it comes time to contact him regarding a question or comment he will never return your call or letter. He did not respond to the family when they left him messages on his answering machine or with his secretary. He seems to be too busy to bother with good open client communication and service. He showed up late for court and seems to not care about his client. He seems to do the min to get a job done which may not be in the best interest of the client.

Laurel Munger did not look at any evidence I submitted to her. Right from the beginning she told me my best option was to plea bargain. I was sexually assaulted by 16 and 17 year old teenagers. I contacted police for help and they did not believe me. They sought out statements from the teenagers who gave false descriptions. Prosecution had only the statements from the rapists who were minors and so I was charged with having sex with minors and exposure of genitals (a felony). Laurel Munger told me it was not a crime based on intent and that I was automatically at fault and my best bet was to plea bargain. I would not agree to plea bargaining and maintained my position. Ms Munger would not listen to me, she scolded me for not agreeing to the offers made and she routinely told me I was liable. She would not return my calls for days. Eventually I retained a different attorney who met with prosecution and presented the evidence that had sat in Ms Munger's office for seven months. The case was promptly dismissed - all charges dropped and investigation initiated on other parties. Ms Munger provides very poor representation.

I received a request to be a witness in a case I drove there to do my part. I was then only reimbursed for mileage from the mn boarder. I spent hours driving (near duluth mn) and was given less than $20. This da can go stick the public service job. Don't ask law abiding citizens for help (presented as required) and then hurt them, im low income and made the journey. You should be ashamed!

Hired as the Eau Claire District Attorney in Wisconsin. Directly associated with the protection of Kelly Rondquist, the attorney who is notorious for releasing offenders who violated against children. I am basically informing you that if you hire this man, you might as well have Epstein and Cosby on your legal team too. -I'm sure Peter would fit right in!

I do not recommend this lawyer, she took an excruciatingly long time to do simple tasks. Even though I firmly had the law on my side she could not react in court appropriately - and the consequence was that the matter was never fully settled. Another wonderful thing is that she charged me for every single time I emails or called her. Some of these emails she sent me were one line long saying "Your court date is on ..." and that cost 0.2 hours. So $25 to tell me a judge was substituted, $25 to tell me a court date (what were the notices in the mail for then?). I am very displeased with her knowledge on civil matters, for instance I spent thousands of dollars on one matter, thinking certain things are going to come out of it, and then I find out months later that a statute she relied upon to write her documents and argue in court - was REPEALED 3 years prior... a terrible disservice. I plan on making a complaint to the OLR when all this stuff settles. She also failed to get firm answers from the judge and now my case is being appealed due to her lack of diligence on the matter! Nice, huh?

He was to be representing a family member. Had no problems meeting with us to discuss the case...even seemed reasonable with his fees and was willing to accept installmet plans. However after recieving the first 500 dollars (the total was 1500), he failed to follow thru on promises to visit his client who was incarcerated at the time. He failed to file for an appeal despite telling his client that he would send a copy of the paperwork to him. He would not respond in a timely fashion via phone and when texted he would give the song and dance that he was working in his client best intest. He is a very poor communicator and he would only contact us was to ask for more money.

Do not use this person. He only cares about himself and money. He doesn't do any work other than review the charging documents and "wings" it in court. After he has your money he doesn't respond to calls or emails. He seems to have quite the ego, still don't understand why. Court officials obviously have little regard for him. I experienced all of this first hand after it was too late. There are plenty of similar comments on line. Wish I would have researched him beforehand. In my opinion he shouldn't be allowed to practice law.

Within a minute of meeting Roger he told me that I was guilty no matter what.?? Now I didn't pass my bar exam But.... I'm pretty sure a great lawyer will fight every avenue he can! Like Oj Simpson being found Not guilty! The thing is with my case even an average lawyer would see that there is a couple different avenues we could look at to prove I am not guilty! Roger has not returned one of my phone calls....he also had to be corrected by the judge about the law!

Was hired back in 2009 for custody case. Didn't show up to one of the first court dates due to "flat tire", and having to change it. NO calls to the court, and I was hanging to dry. Hands at the court house when he showed up, well after the hearing was over, were clean as a whistle. It didn't help his story that friends and I had seen him at the bar many nights out in Whitewater. Once retainer was spent we parted ways. With him as my lawyer, I got my child every other weekend. I have a clean record, the mother of my child had numerous charges from drugs to forgery. Fast forward a few years later, I hire a new lawyer to take up my case, and after a few years of court cases, I have had full custody and full placement of my child. The mothers rights have all been revoked. I wonder how much sooner I could have gotten my child if I had never wasted my time and money with this gentleman.

I was a client of Alana's in 2014. She is very disorganized and very cold. She put everything off throughout our case until last min then flat out lied in court to cover herself and her mistakes. It is possible to get ahold of her as the office has no answering machine and she does not use a computer. Her secretary is very rude. Alana was my attorney and she cost me custody of my children die to her lack of fact gathering. She charges for things she did not do as well. I would not recommend her for anything.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
