Jonas helped me through a difficult transition in which I needed to leave a job before my contract ended. He was prompt in his communication and very generous with his input and advice. He made time before and afterwards to discuss further and has remained a dependable lawyer that I can count on when I have questions. I highly recommend Jonas and am grateful for his important services.

Ms Aboushi was amazing! She worked hard for about 6 years on my son's case! Whatever she needed, I got and she would go straight to work. Even after the case was handled, she still gives advice when we need it and my kid is always on her mind! You get treated with so much respect and just knowing that someone is willing to go all out for you, especially when seeing justice! I would recommend her in a heart beat. It was always about what was best for my child, not for her. As long as we were happy, she would push through. I don't believe anyone would work harder than her. She took on my case after another firm had a hold on it for almost a year and did nothing. She on the other hand, took it and was off.

After almost 20 years of service to my employer I found myself in need of legal advice. I reached out to a friend who is a highly regarded Attorney in Westchester County N.Y. for advice. Although employment law is not his specialty, he recommended that I contact Howard Schragin of Sapir-Schragin LLP. Without hesitation I took his advice and contacted Howard. Mr. Schragin took the time to listen to me and understand my situation and frustrations. He offered his advice and painted a clear and concise picture of the law and possible considerations and outcomes. I must tell you that he made me feel comfortable in a very uncomfortable situation. With Howard by my side I was able to make good decisions based on his great advice to elicit a positive outcome that exceeded my expectations. Not only does Howard fully engage with his clients he really tries to relate to their situation. If you are in need of legal advice, related to an employment or workplace situation, you owe it to yourself to contact Howard Schragin for a consultation. It will be the best call you can possibly make.

Howard represented me and my spouse in unrelated employment matters. He listened patiently during our consultations and asked insightful questions before explaining our options clearly and offering his recommendations. He took the time to answer our questions and incorporated our feedback. Howard gave us sound advice each time and facilitated fair resolutions in the face of very serious extenuating circumstances. I could go on, but suffice it to say we would recommend him without reservation to anyone struggling with issues at work.

I hired Mr. Pappas for my wages and tips case against my former employer. I worked for the company for 10+ yrs. I had no idea that I was being paid incorrectly and unfairly until a coworker read a similar case in an article. I researched and called Mr. Pappas for legal advice. He was friendly, polite, and heard my case start to finish. He told me indeed I was being underpaid and that I'm owed all lost wages+tips going back up to 6 years (NY state law). At the end I was able to recover my wages, tips, plus another $10,000 in fines. I was surprised how much I was able to receive even after I left my job...one thing that stood out was he always answered my emails and calls (which was a HUGE deal as I've dealt with lawyers in the past who never answer their phones!) I highly recommend Mr. Pappas, 5 stars all the way

Orit was exactly what I needed in an attorney. She is smart, astute, professional, and accessible. She doesn’t speak over her clients heads, but at the same time, doesn’t speak down to you either. She is direct and sets reasonable expectations and walks her clients through the process without judgement. I found her style comforting without being patronizing. Based on my needs, she was able to customize her approach and positioned us to take advantage of the strengths of both my case and myself, without making me feel like the issue was mine alone. My case and the approach was somewhat unique , and not every lawyer would have guided me like she did. I would not only happily use her again, but would refer her to others. I find her welcoming to all groups of people, which is important in these types of situations. I respect her immensely as a legal talent, and find her personality engaging to the point where she would always have an invitation to Thanksgiving dinner! Thanks, Orit. I appreciate your efforts on my behalf. You made moving on to bigger and better things so much easier.

I honestly don't know how to thank Ed and his firm for all of their help and support. Nothing I write here will do justice to the quality and sincerity of Ed’s and his team’s work. First of all, Ed is extremely knowledgeable, highly strategic, and has all of the top qualities that you look for in an effective lawyer. He smoothly and quickly settled my case with my former employer via a law that no other lawyer that I consulted with even thought of. Also, he helped me avoid the potentially embarrassing experience of litigation, yet still secured a very substantial settlement for me. The outcome he produced was above and beyond my highest expectations. However, monetary recovery was not the most valuable outcome that I received from working with Ed. The greatest benefit that I gained from this experience was the strong sense of self-empowerment that Ed instilled in me, and, to me, as a woman, this is priceless. Ed and his firm gave me the support, motivation and courage to stand up for myself and to do what was right for me. What I admire most about Ed is his empathy and his unique ability to fully and completely comprehend the positioning and experiences of women in the workplace. When I first walked into Ed's office, I felt an instant rapport with him. Ed patiently listened to me and was completely present and focused while I told him my story. He listened without judgment and offered sincere counsel. After our first meeting, I instinctively knew Ed had my best interest at heart, and I could fully trust him. I was in good hands. Ed helped me to obtain justice not only monetarily, and not only morally. He helped me to obtain justice in its complete sense, and for me, as a woman, that’s extremely important. I have unwavering faith in Ed and his firm's commitment to helping women in the workforce. If you feel that you have been wronged by your former employer, I highly recommend that you hire Ed and his firm, especially if you're a woman. He will not only get you a settlement that is most likely beyond what you expect, but he will do so ethically, morally, efficiently, and you may even gain a sense of self-empowerment that you never knew was possible.

I was referred to Ed by my employment lawyer when it was clear that the only way there was going to be a resolution to my dispute with my employer was if I hired a litigator. We spoke on the phone and I immediately liked Ed. He is articulate, highly experienced, strategic and compassionate. Ed is also fair. He has his own practice, which is something I prefer in a lawyer. I found him to be reasonably priced (or, as reasonably priced as a lawyer can be!). One of the things I valued in Ed is his understanding of both the employee and the company's side of any situation, as he's spent considerable time as a defense lawyer. I liked that he could get into the other side's brain. I found Ed to be super responsive and very professional. He did a great job of keeping me abreast of his communication with my former employer's lawyer and, though I know he has so many other high-priority cases, I felt that I was given just as much attention and care. Our case moved to mediation and I was even more impressed with Ed, being able to see him in action. His ability to build rapport is admirable and, I believe, important. He clearly has an excellent reputation in the legal world and amongst some of the most renowned mediators. During mediation, he guided me, gave me perspective, but didn't force me to make any decisions I wasn't comfortable with and I am deeply appreciative of this skill of his. Throughout everything, I always felt that Ed was putting my best interests ahead of his own. We ended up settling and I am pleased with the outcome, an outcome that I know is in great deal because of the excellent work Ed did on my behalf.

I was referred to Ed by a colleague who had conferred with him. I can write all day long and it won't be enough to express my gratitude towards Ed for his advice and help. I am especially thankful he explained the entire process to me, as often as I needed, and let me know exactly what I might be in for should my case go to trial. He was equal parts knowledgeable and empathetic as well as being an all around great guy. I heartily and enthusiastically recommend Ed Cerasia.

He understood my unfortunate workplace situation immediately and explained to me, in layman's terms, the liabilities, claims, and possible directions to pursue. Throughout the process he was unwavering in his support, responsive, and clearly invested in my case. Even when things seemed to get complicated he dug in and fought for me. I'm happy to share that he was able to wrap up my case fairly quickly in a matter of months with a much more positive outcome than I anticipated. I don't really want to go into specifics of my case (tl;dr it was sticky, delicate, and messy), and instead would like to focus my review on my experience with Queenie, who I hired to represent me. I'll start with results. Queenie was able to advocate for me, and I ended up with an agreement that provided me better protections. She was able to secure more for me than what I thought was possible. This is significant, especially because in these scenarios we don't always know what we can ask for. It's great to have someone in your corner who does, and will do the work to secure that for you. The second thing I want to emphasize is how Queenie did this. She is experienced and knowledgeable, there is no doubt about that. But she also sought an environment that would give me the most leverage, using a wide range of tools and tactics. Queenie threw herself into this and was an aggressive advocate when she needed to be, and a measured advocate when it would be most beneficial to me. That was my experience with her. She also affirmed my role as the client and in the end gave me room to advocate for myself in a manner I could not before. I hope to not be in this situation again, but if I do, and for the many of us who end up here, you want someone like Queenie in your corner.

He really took the time to listen to the employees involved and they truly cared how the case impacted all of us I’ve dealt with a few lawyers before but I can honestly say none of them had the dedication and expertise that I witnessed with Daniel Markowitz. I would highly recommend him to anyone who is in need of a lawyer. Thanks again Daniel for all of your hard work which resulted in a win for us.

Daniela, pound for pound, may be one of the best discrimination attorneys in New York. Her practice may be small, but she punches far above her weight. My complaint was against an academic institution with resources and clout that made them appear to be invulnerable. Through her dedication, wit, and grace, we stood toe-to-toe with the defendant -- and their massive, predatory law firm -- at every step of litigation. Her confident, commanding presence, and willingness to stand up for you, is deeply reassuring, and she earnest regards you as a partner and an equal in the process. I am beyond grateful for Daniela and would highly recommend her.

I consulted Daniela concerning an employment discrimination matter. Even before being retained, she was very generous with her time. Although I was able to give her only short notice, she prioritized reviewing many gathered documents and provided suggestions to me. This enabled me to meet important deadlines. She impressed me as a very sensitive and detailed-oriented lawyer. She seems to have exceedingly strong loyalty to her clients.

Tracy Boshart has been my L/T attorney for more than 15 years. He has well represented my interest in Manhattan and Brooklyn courts and in administrative hearings more than a dozen times. Some cases have been straight-forward (nonpayment of rent) and others complex (need for court to appoint guardian ad litem), no matter the issue: I have always had confidence in his judgment. Although I have not always prevailed, I have always been well-represented. I have recommended him to friends who are landlords and others who are tenants and all have been well-served by him.

Josh Beldner helped me when my FMLA rights were not respected. He was very professional and told me what to expect at each stage of the case. He obviously put a great deal of work into my case on his own and remembered everything I told him, using the information at very appropriate times. He brought dignity to the case and made sure I was treated with respect. He was very clear and direct with me, so I felt prepared for each phase of the case. I learned to trust him at a vulnerable time because of the way he conducted himself. Josh brought skills of clarity, intelligence, and professionalism to a bad experience, helping me find the positive in the situation. I have a great deal of respect for both Eric Tilton, and Josh Beldner and the Tilton, Beldner firm and highly recommended their services.

RYCB were highly recommended to me by one of their former clients and this law firm has exceeded my expectations. Brandon Fleischhacker is the best! He is professional, understanding, and listened to my concerns. From the very beginning he was upfront and explained everything to me in detail. Every two weeks Brandon would call me and check in on how I was feeling. He also responded to my messages promptly and advocated for me. He was very caring and showed great concern for my well being during this very stressful experience. Everyone in the RYCB firm are professionals and they work great as a team. Whenever I had any concerns or questions I was pointed in the right direction and followed up with to make sure I was satisfied. They did a great job advocating for me. I had recently recommended a friend to them and was confident that she was in good hands. I’m very happy with how my case turned out and highly recommend them.

I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for the exceptional legal representation provided by Togut, Segal & Segal LLP during our recent custody case with Celsius Network. Bryan M. What a Discrimination Lawyer Can Do for You

A discrimination lawyer specializes in handling cases where individuals or groups face unfair treatment based on protected characteristics, such as race, gender, age, religion, national origin, disability, or sexual orientation. These lawyers assist clients in filing discrimination claims, representing them in legal proceedings, and ensuring that their rights under federal, state, and local laws are upheld. Discrimination cases may arise in employment, housing, education, public accommodations, or other settings.

Whether you’ve been discriminated against at work, denied housing, or treated unfairly in other areas of life, a discrimination lawyer can help you navigate the legal process and seek compensation or corrective action.

When Should I Hire a Discrimination Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a discrimination lawyer in several situations where unfair treatment occurs based on protected characteristics. Common scenarios include:

  • Employment Discrimination:
    • Workplace discrimination: If you’ve been treated unfairly at work because of your race, gender, disability, religion, age, sexual orientation, or another protected status, a lawyer can help you file a claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or a similar state agency.
    • Wrongful termination: If you were fired due to discrimination or retaliation for reporting discriminatory behavior, a lawyer can assist with filing a lawsuit and seeking compensation for lost wages, emotional distress, and other damages.
    • Failure to promote: If you’ve been denied a promotion or opportunities due to discriminatory practices, a lawyer can investigate the claim and represent you in legal actions against your employer.
    • Harassment: If you’ve experienced workplace harassment, such as sexual harassment or a hostile work environment based on your race, gender, or other characteristics, a lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.
  • Housing Discrimination:
    • Denial of housing: If you’ve been denied housing due to your race, disability, family status, or other protected factors, a lawyer can help you file a complaint with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) or sue the landlord or property manager for violating the Fair Housing Act.
    • Unfair rental practices: If a landlord or property manager treats you unfairly based on discriminatory factors (e.g., refusing reasonable accommodations for a disability), a lawyer can help you enforce your rights.
  • Education Discrimination:
    • Discrimination in schools: If you or your child has faced discrimination in an educational setting based on race, disability, gender, or religion, a lawyer can help you file complaints under laws like Title VI, Title IX, or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  • Public Accommodations:
    • Denial of services: If a business or public service has discriminated against you based on race, gender, disability, or other protected characteristics, a lawyer can assist you in filing a complaint or lawsuit under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or other anti-discrimination laws.

Hiring a discrimination lawyer early can help protect your rights and ensure that your claim is filed within legal deadlines.

What Does a Discrimination Lawyer Do?

A discrimination lawyer provides a range of legal services to help individuals and groups fight against discriminatory practices. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing discrimination claims: A lawyer can help you file a complaint with government agencies, such as the EEOC, HUD, or your state’s human rights commission. They ensure that your claim is properly documented and filed within required time limits.
  • Investigating discrimination claims: Discrimination lawyers gather evidence, interview witnesses, and review documents to build a strong case for proving discriminatory practices.
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, a lawyer can negotiate a settlement with the employer, landlord, or other party involved in the discrimination case, seeking compensation or corrective action without going to trial.
  • Representing clients in court: If your case goes to court, a lawyer will represent you during hearings, present evidence, and argue your case before a judge or jury.
  • Handling retaliation claims: If you face retaliation for filing a discrimination complaint or reporting discriminatory practices, a lawyer can help you pursue a retaliation claim.
  • Advising on legal rights: A discrimination lawyer explains your legal rights under federal and state anti-discrimination laws, such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the ADA, the Fair Housing Act, and others.

How Are Discrimination Lawyers Paid?

Discrimination lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the expected duration of the legal process. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many discrimination lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they win or settle the case. Their fee is usually a percentage of the settlement or court award, typically ranging from 25% to 40%.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that don’t involve a contingency fee arrangement, some lawyers charge by the hour. Hourly rates for discrimination lawyers generally range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For simpler legal tasks, such as drafting a discrimination complaint or providing legal advice, some lawyers may charge a flat fee.
  • Pro bono or reduced fees: Some discrimination lawyers offer pro bono (free) or reduced-fee services, especially in cases involving low-income clients or significant civil rights issues.

It’s important to discuss fee arrangements during your initial consultation to ensure that you understand the total cost of legal services and how payment will be handled.

How Much Does a Discrimination Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a discrimination lawyer depends on factors like the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the potential for a settlement or trial. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fees: If the lawyer works on a contingency basis, their fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of any settlement or court award. For example, if you win a settlement of $50,000 and the lawyer’s fee is 30%, they would receive $15,000, and you would keep the remaining $35,000.
  • Hourly rates: Discrimination lawyers who charge by the hour typically bill between $200 and $600 per hour. For example, a case that takes 20 hours of legal work at $300 per hour would cost $6,000 in legal fees.
  • Flat fees: Some legal services, such as filing a discrimination complaint or providing a legal consultation, may be available for a flat fee ranging from $500 to $2,500, depending on the complexity of the task.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale fees: In some cases, particularly for low-income individuals, lawyers may offer reduced fees or work pro bono.

Always ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation, and clarify whether the lawyer offers flexible payment options.

Top Questions to Ask a Discrimination Lawyer

Before hiring a discrimination lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the experience and qualifications to handle your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with discrimination cases?
Ensure that the lawyer has handled discrimination cases similar to yours, whether it involves employment, housing, or public accommodation discrimination.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a contingency fee, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for a detailed breakdown of costs.
  3. What are my chances of success?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and the likelihood of success.
  4. How long will the process take?
Discrimination cases can take time to resolve, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to take, from filing a complaint to reaching a settlement or going to trial.
  5. Will I need to go to court?
Ask whether your case is likely to settle out of court or if a trial may be necessary. If a trial is possible, ask what steps the lawyer will take to prepare.
  6. What damages or remedies can I seek?
Ask about the types of compensation or corrective action you can pursue, such as back pay, emotional distress damages, job reinstatement, or policy changes.
  7. What steps should I take to protect my rights?
Ask for advice on how to document evidence, handle workplace or housing interactions, and avoid retaliation while your case is pending.

How to Check the Credibility of a Discrimination Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable discrimination lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their bar status: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and in good standing with the state bar association. You can check this on your state bar’s website.
  • Look for discrimination case experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in employment law, civil rights, or discrimination cases and have successfully handled similar cases in the past.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on discrimination matters.
  • Check for certifications or memberships: Look for certifications or memberships in civil rights organizations or employment law associations, such as the National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA).

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a discrimination lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Detailed account of the discrimination: Provide a clear description of the discriminatory actions, including dates, locations, and individuals involved. Document specific incidents and any witnesses who can support your claim.
  • Workplace or housing records: Bring copies of relevant employment or housing documents, such as job performance evaluations, rental agreements, emails, or written correspondence related to the discrimination.
  • Company or organization policies: If the discrimination occurred in the workplace or housing, bring copies of company policies, employee handbooks, or housing agreements that outline anti-discrimination policies.
  • Evidence of damages: Provide evidence of any financial losses, such as lost wages, job termination, or increased rent, as well as emotional or psychological distress caused by the discrimination.
  • Previous complaints or actions: If you’ve filed previous complaints or taken any action related to the discrimination, such as reporting the issue to HR or filing a complaint with a government agency, bring copies of those documents.
  • Questions about the process: Prepare a list of questions about your legal options, potential outcomes, and the lawyer’s approach to handling your case.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice for pursuing your discrimination claim.
