John has experience in many assets of law including family law. His knowledge of the justice system is top notch. John also represented me in bankruptcy court. While my family law case did not go well John gave quality representation. Bankruptcy court on the other hand was a smooth process. He was and is always there to answer your questions with quality explanation and interpretation. Highly recommended.

SAVE YOUR MONEY !!! This attorney did the bare minimum for me in my case of 2 years and the job is still not done. Made claims the judge had an emergency so let's extend your case out a YEAR !!! She was very unprofessional, always sent her paralegal to do the dirty work rather than contact me herself. I know karma will come and it's not for me...glad to be done with her and her office.

Went to her back in March of 2021 and she wanted a $2,500 retainer fee a couple of days later she called and said that due to the circumstances of the case, she would need another $2,500. She told me it would take about 3 months for my divorce. Today, 12-20-2021, 8 months after she told me it would take about 3 months, I called her office and was told that she no longer works out of that office and was given a new phone number for her. I called her new number and i had to repeat my first and last name to the person who answered the phone about 5 times and was told afterwords that they would get back to me also sounded like either her daughter or some high school kid doing part time work answering the phones. one got back to me and this was approximately 6 hours after i called to find out about my divorce case status. Very unprofessional and over expensive, but even though i have not gotten any updates on my divorce status, I have gotten invoices for services rendered which have been none, except taking my money!!!!!

Krista had to come clean up the mess that my past attorneys had left me in. She is educated in psych. and family law, so she truly understands and is compassionate to the cases she takes. Very friendly, very professional, and I have had the pleasure/ been working with her for years now and she has always quickly responded to all my questions as well as gave a straight-forward and thorough answer. She’s great representation, a woman of justice and honor, honesty, family, compassion and kindness. I am blessed to have found such an attorney!

After my disabled son’s wife filed for divorce and exploited his impairments by tricking him into signing all community property to herself - as his Power of Attorney I retained counsel. After six months of her deceptive/deterrent tactics - despite being sanctioned $1500 for them - we switched lawyers in December 2021. We retained Krista based on all of the 5-star reviews about her successfully fighting for other clients; but after ten months of giving her the benefit of the doubt, and wanting to avoid starting over with a third attorney, we ended up having a zero-star experience. She did disclose that a few upcoming medical procedures might slow progress, but they caused major delays and seriously compromised her performance. Due to COVID, she was working from home with no staff. Lacking support, her communications with us and the petitioner were mostly via informal emails which were often delayed. There were also significant enough errors in emails to the petitioner, that I began drafting them for accuracy myself so she could copy/paste and send them. Due to the thousands resulting from the petitioner’s non-compliance, I told Krista that I wanted to ask for legal fees in the settlement - but she said we shouldn’t since the petitioner didn’t have an attorney, and a judge would see it as bullying. When it came to making timely repairs to the neglected marital home to maximize profit and list it during a sellers-market bubble, Krista kept making allowances for the petitioner’s ongoing deterrent tactics, which postponed our ability to list it until the market was on the decline - diminishing potential proceeds. Once there was an offer and a closing date set for the end of September 2022, a critical document requiring my son’s signature was emailed to her at the end of August 2022; but with only a few days til closing, our panicked real estate broker was asking where it was. When I called her about it, Krista found and forwarded it to us [with no apology for the oversight or stress/inconvenience], and we had to scramble to get it to the buyer’s broker in time. After the sale of the house, she rescheduled a phone appointment last minute - only to no-show us at the re-scheduled time! When she missed calling by 15 minutes, I texted but got no reply. At the half-hour point, I called and left a voicemail, but she didn't call back until a few hours later. With no apology, she said that the appointment didn’t show up on her calendar, that she had been at the Verizon store all morning, so could we reschedule again! At this point, I terminated her services. Since the majority of her 5-star reviews included her then assistant and go back to 2014 - I am posting this to save others from the frustration, stress, expense, and lost time that we experienced.

BEWARE: This attorney has been Disciplined w/actual suspension by the State Bar. I strongly advise against hiring Edmond Salem as your attorney. My experience with him was extremely disappointing and frustrating. Firstly, he lacks credibility and has a history of disciplinary issues, including an actual suspension from the state bar. This alone should raise red flags for anyone considering his services. Moreover, he is not honest in his dealings. I found his advice to be misleading, and he failed to provide clear and accurate information about my case. His lack of transparency was concerning and made me question his integrity as a professional. To make matters worse, Edmond Salem finds ways of overcharging for his services. I was shocked by the exorbitant fees he billed, which were not justified by the quality of his work. It's clear that he prioritizes his financial gain over the best interests of his clients. In summary, Edmond Salem is an attorney you should avoid. His past disciplinary actions, lack of honesty, and unreasonable fees make him a poor choice for legal representation.

Mr. Salem was not only able to minimize very stiff penalties I was facing in a criminal case, he also helped me save my job by getting the charges reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor. He and his very capable staff stood by me every step of the way during very a frightening time for me. No one ever expects to find themselves facing jail time and the quality of your legal representative can determine the outcome of your case. Should anyone find themselves facing an improbable situation, I would strongly recommend Ed Salem for knowledgeable and effective representation.

I reached out to Dr Kramer due to a google search for helping with Malpractice from Kaiser. While Dr Kramer did come across short and rough over the phone, and requested a 5-figure up front retainer, I wanted to vouch for him since I saw so many people complain about his initial phone call. He is rough and direct. But that is what you want in an attorney. He’s also uniquely qualified since he has both an M.D. as well as a J.D. He got his law degree from Stanford. I called on Memorial Day, a holiday where most firms only let me leave a voicemail and never actually returned the call, and DR. Kramer answered the phone personally. I was requesting an ex parte motion be filed asap and despite the short notice, he was willing to get it done in less than two days filed with the court. He may not be the cheapest attorney, but he’s direct and answers the phone or messages you back quickly. This is a rare thing in the legal industry. Most attorneys will likely give you a lot of lip service. I actually prefer the direct to the point nature that Dr. Kramer gives. He doesn’t waste time. So if you are very sensitive and need someone to be gentle with you over the phone for an initial meeting, he likely isn’t the person for you. If you want an aggressive, hard working attorney who is overqualified for his role and still willing to take smaller cases, then he is your man. As an experience finance expert who graduated from Harvard University, I can genuinely tell you that this is a rare trait to have from an attorney. Anyone would be lucky to have him represent their case.

I have used Mr. Peterson as my attorney for child custody and child support for about the last 7 years. He has represented me each time I have found myself back in court. Over the years he has always been very pleasant to deal with. He does not only treat you with respect, but he treats you like a friend. He won’t steer you wrong, he won’t give you false hope, he will be very straight forward and tell you what to expect. He will always be realistic with you and explain what the laws allow and don’t allow, even if it’s something you won’t agree with. Even with his own personal life, he still has always reached out and informed me of what’s going on. It is never fun finding yourself going to court, regardless of the situation. Mr. Peterson has always taken the stress off my shoulders. In my honest opinion, he is worth every penny spent.

If I could give negative stars of Bruce A. Mandel, I would! Issues include: - A crucial missed deadline, even though I supplied all necessary information 2 full days in advance. - 2 more almost-missed deadlines. My counsel literally asked me to sign documents at 11pm twice, with midnight deadlines, even though I had supplied all requested information far in advance. - Several unanswered emails, miscommunication and lack of communication for months. - Bad advice from Bruce that almost cost me 50/50 custody of my son. - Bruce was absent during the only scheduled court hearing we had, and it was not caused by an emergency, he simply booked 2 cases at the same time on the same date, even though he told me his calendar was clear on my scheduled court date. - Extremely low quality work product in general, largely due to the constant last-second scrambling. - Complete failure to follow-through on the things we discussed, and he even failed to execute a 50/50 Custody Order for more than 4 months after a judge ordered him to write up that order, and I reminded him multiple times! - A massive misunderstanding regarding a 3rd court continuance, even though I emailed Bruce 4 times and called him once to make sure he understood the issues, he ended up making a massive blunder that essentially gave up our advantages entirely. - Bruce finally illegally withdrew from the case while the case was still ongoing, resulting in extremely damaging client abandonment less than 24 hours before a scheduled call with opposing counsel. I have filed a complaint with the CA State Bar, and demanded Arbitration of fees already. I am also in talks with a malpractice attorney, as I believe Bruce's failures to perform basic attorney functions have cost me more than just his fees at this point. My advice is to run, not walk, to any family law attorney OTHER Than Bruce A Mandel.

I had the unique experience of working with Bruce Mandel, even though he was originally hired by my ex-husband. Throughout this challenging process, Bruce and his team displayed an exceptional level of professionalism, compassion, and efficiency that truly set them apart. From the moment I engaged with his practice, I was met with kindness and understanding. Bruce not only helped me navigate the legal complexities of divorce but also went above and beyond by providing me guidance with the paperwork. The staff at Bruce Mandel's office deserves special recognition as well. They were consistently informative, promptly returning my calls and ensuring that I had the information I needed to move forward in a timely manner. Never once did I feel like a burden, and their willingness to assist was both comforting and greatly appreciated. Bruce Mandel and his team stood out as beacons of professionalism and support. Going through a divorce is never easy, and it was no different for me. I needed a reliable attorney for my case, which involved more substantial assets, and thankfully, a trusted friend referred me to Tammy. From the beginning, she was incredibly supportive and knowledgeable. Tammy was always available to answer any questions I had. I had a question about a bill once and I was worried from past experience that it would turn into a fight, but Tammy patiently resolved my concerns, drawing from a detailed record of the work she'd done to represent me. Her expert handling of my case led to a satisfactory agreement with my ex-spouse. I am grateful for her guidance and professionalism during such a difficult time. I highly recommend Tammy to anyone looking for competent and compassionate legal support in a divorce.

She unethically overstated her expertise, overcharged, engaged in theft through intentional double billing, back-charged for conversations that happened prior to our engagement, then abandoned me (After billing $60k in only 2 months for no random stuff that did not in my case). She only wants to drain everything you have. Stay away!

Nicole was pawned off on me, for lack of better words, I went in thinking I was hiring Ms Whyte, and ended up with Miss Schmidt. She was rude through most of the process, and really did not listen, it was much easier for her to handle things in a cookie cutter fashion than to think outside the box. My biggest mistake was not getting a new attorney after our first day in court when she negotiated, I had very little involvement wirh that and was told it was only a preliminary and that we could get it changed later. Come to find out that is actually a very difficult feat. She prefers only contact through email. Once your case is finished, she mmakes it clear that she is no longer your attorney, you can rehire her for $300 an hour to ask her about your specifics about what was agreed upon in your negotiation. There's no information given on preparation for the future and in what instances you are entitled to make negotiations. Now I am paying an even steeper price by financial loss through her settling instead of fighting the fight and by hiring a new attorney to review and inform me of all that was agreed upon.

I went in and out of the courts all by myself with no luck for 2 years. Served her several times and even though the mother never showed up, things didn’t change. They FINALLY helped me get custody but by the time I got it, it was too late. Mother took my daughter who knows where. Detectives are still looking for them. It’s been over 14 years since I have seen her. The family court system is broken, you really DO need someone by your side with experience navigating it. I only wish I knew about them and called earlier. Maybe I could have gotten custody before she disappeared. And they did it all for free.

As if it wasn't hard already being a victim of domestic violence, there Levitt & Quinn is to make it an even more grueling process. I applied for help over a month prior to my final court hearing. After jumping through many hoops: 1) traveling to and applying directly at the office 2) submitting additional paperwork that took much effort to collect detail behind 3) several delays in correspondence from L&Q and 4) needing to spend money on requested documentation, I wasn't able to even land a consultation. They were misleading with hope throughout the process. They could've told me "we are unable to help at this time," which would've sufficed instead of wasting the time and energy of someone who is already suffering.

Together, they really care about help their clients get through once of the most trying times in a persons life. Jessica is amazing in court as she maintains a very calm, cool yet assertive nature about herself. Jessica is extremely knowledgeable and is very articulate when representing a person in court. Dealing with an ex that has a punishing personality, Jessica and Gina have been able to provide solutions that help move the case closer to resolution. Choosing Moira as my family law attorney was the best decision that I could have made for the protection of me and my children. She is phenomenal, and I know this firsthand because I started out by hiring another (albeit, bigger) law firm to handle my case. After a series of grave mistakes that were made by the first firm (the costs of which I alone had to bear as a result of this firm’s internal dysfunction, their defective pleadings, and the incompetence of their staff), I fired that first firm, and I hired Moira and her team to fully resolve my very complicated family law case. Her achievements on my behalf are truly remarkable. Moira came highly recommended to me by very good friends of mine who have either utilized her services or know of someone who has. All that I heard about Moira is true: She is a fierce litigator, a strategic advocate, and an experienced counselor who truly cares about her clients and the high quality of her work product. I was skeptical at first, given my prior interactions with lawyers who left a bad taste in my mouth. However, I soon realized that she is truly amazing both inside and outside of the courtroom. Not only does she work really hard, Moira, and her dedicated assistant, Giovanna, always kept me well-informed about my case. They patiently explained everything to me, which often was more than once, since I had to ask for multiple explanations due to my own lack of experience with the law. I am so grateful to them both. My case included a nasty custody dispute as well as a civil lawsuit (called a Marvin action), as my children's father and I used to own a lot of property together, but we were never legally married. With a brilliant legal mind, a successful litigation history spanning over three decades, and a heart made of gold, Moira succeeded in family court by obtaining full custody for me and an order that the children and I could move out-of-state. She also secured a sizeable monthly child support payment for me, and she negotiated an amazing property settlement agreement in the civil case. While the process was long, painful, and expensive, it was always very clear to me (and to the Family and Civil judges hearing the two cases) that the other attorneys (my ex had to hire two attorneys to fight with Moira) did not have the courage or courtroom experience to well stand up to her in court. I distinctly remember at the first Status Conference following my hiring of Moira, as soon as my ex’s attorney saw her walk into the courtroom, she started shaking like a leaf! Moira’s extensive skill and expertise at resolving cases (one way or another) was always evident during literally every phase of my case. I am so grateful to be on the other side of this whole ordeal now. I just received my final court documents from Moira, along with a gracious thank you message for giving her and her team, the opportunity to represent me during the most difficult chapter of my life. In all honestly, the honor is mine. Although I had to pay a lot of money for her representation to ensure the protection that I needed for my children and me, I have no regrets whatsoever. Moira’s professional services have been invaluable to me, and my family’s future is, at last, secure. Thank you, Moira, for protecting us each and every step of the way!

Mike represented me some years ago in a very painful divorce. He was kind, personable, and willing to listen to how I felt about what tactics to take. His son and law partner Mark is the same way. Both are quality attorneys and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone.

In my case for divorce I paid out 100 thousand and when it came time for trial he wanted another 8 thousand. I couldn't afford it at the time. So through the whole trial he did not bearly speak to me, and wouldn't even go over the case. He's all about money and doesn't care about his clients

Sloppy and slow.... you will lose your case because Daryl Lander takes too long. He is lazy, unorganized, and turns into a puppy in court afraid to represent you! Don't EVER trust a lawyer with an online degree to represent you in an important matter!

John Hughes is awesome! I never had to worry he always had everything under control he bills fairly. Most of our communication (very little was needed) went through Nancy. I felt very taken advantage by a previous law firm but Mr Hughes took great care of my case and made it so stress free. Thank you John Hughes!

Hired a forensic accountant but failed to apply the findings to help my case. Lost a Million Dollars. Old case, but one that deserves remembering. He made over $50,000 but was more concerned about his fees than my case. All of my settlement was in retirement annuities when I had children to raise and retirement was over 20 years away.

She was a good attorney at one time. When she lost her assistant, she lost it. If you want an attorney that doesn’t respond to your requests, calls, emails and does not communicate important things to you, by all means, hire her.

Carmel D’Amato is an outstanding family law attorney and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with her and her team at Seinturier and D’Amato. Of particular importance to me, she listens carefully to her clients and asks good questions in order to understand their goals and needs. She provided me with excellent advice based on the facts of my case and what I told her my goals were. Of particular importance, she helped me understand the difference between what I wanted and thought was fair, based on what I read about California family law, and what were likely outcomes given the reality of California family law and the family law system in Shasta county. I was very impressed by Carmel’s ability to maintain her integrity, composure, and good humor despite the difficulties of this flawed system and the challenges of dealing with opponents who are willing to sacrifice their integrity and constantly mislead the court to gain an advantage. In the end, I got what I consider to be an excellent settlement that allowed me to move on with my life.

After years of feeling like a deposit that should have been returned, and was not, I feel that I was taken advantage of. I never saw a bill only had conversations with him and he never put anything in writing. All was well until I asked for the deposit back for my son's case, since there WAS NOT TRIAL. He bent and stretched words and did not even have the decency to return calls or emails. Did not make complaints that he said he would regarding the conduct of the DA. Short dude with and ego lots to prove I suppose.

Due to Mr. Perry's arrogance and incompetence, I spent three years in prison. How would I know this? I was a lawyer myself! He made several references to my race and religion and didn't want to do a lick of work. So far, he has gotten away with it; but once the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals rules on this issue, he won't. In all fairness, he might be worth hiriing now, as long as it isn't a complex, white collar matter. and you can mortgage your house tro make him happy.

I was referred to Andrew by Legal Shield. The initial call was great, and I sent him the file on my case. After review, we spoke again, and instead of taking the case on contingency, Andrew wanted to do a retainer with hourly plus contingency, which I agreed to, and even insisted on increasing the contingency percentage. I told him I could fund the retainer and start the case in about three weeks. At this point, his demeanor changed significantly, and it got awkward. He then told me to call him back when I was ready to start and that he wouldn't sent the agreement to be reviewed until then. Odd, but I agreed. I called him back sooner than originally forecast, 20 days later, ready to start the case and fund the retainer, but it went to voice mail. Over the next few days I left several voicemails and texts until I finally got a text reply that he wasn't interested in working with me. I said I was sorry to hear that, and asked why but did not receive a reply. I sent a follow-up asking for the reason, but still no reply. Very unprofessional; should have believed the other reviews.

From our first conversation, I knew right away Andy was going to have a positive impact on my case. He exceeded my expectations and I had little to worry about throughout the entire time leading up to and on my court date. He was professional, knowledgeable and assertive with every aspect of my family law matter. He was always available to answer any question I had and made me feel more at ease when I worried or was in doubt. I would recommend Andy to any parent that is looking to spend more time with their child and wants a fair amount of support to be ordered. Thank you Andy for all your efforts and for a successful outcome!

An unfortunate event happened with my son recently and a friend recommended me to Mr. Mezzetti's office. This firm lured me in with a free consultation and a promise to relieve my support payments instantly by $10k/month. Elated I hired them on the spot.Afterpaying them $15k, I saw that they did nothing to help my case except billing me for every one in their firm to touch my file. And yet when I ask anyone questions nobody seems to be able to know my case or give any advice. When I said I’d have enough, they sent me another bill for $24k. What a Domestic Violence Lawyer Can Do for You

A domestic violence lawyer provides legal assistance to individuals involved in cases of domestic abuse, whether you are a victim seeking protection or someone accused of domestic violence defending against the charges. These lawyers help with obtaining restraining orders (protective orders), representing clients in criminal court, and handling related family law issues such as child custody, divorce, and visitation rights.

If you are dealing with domestic violence, a lawyer can help protect your rights and navigate the legal system to ensure your safety or defend you if you’re falsely accused.

When Should I Hire a Domestic Violence Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a domestic violence lawyer if you are:

  • A Victim of Domestic Violence:
    • Filing for a protective order (restraining order): If you need immediate protection from an abuser, a lawyer can help you file for a protective order, which legally requires the abuser to stay away from you and refrain from contacting you.
    • Divorce or separation due to abuse: If domestic violence is a factor in your relationship, a lawyer can help you pursue a divorce or legal separation and ensure that you are protected throughout the process.
    • Child custody and visitation issues: A lawyer can help you secure custody of your children and limit or restrict the abuser’s visitation rights to protect the safety of your children.
    • Filing criminal charges: If you are pursuing criminal charges against the abuser, a domestic violence lawyer can work with law enforcement and prosecutors to ensure the case is handled properly.
    • Assistance with safety planning: A lawyer can advise on the legal steps to create a safety plan, including securing temporary housing, and taking steps to protect you and your family.
  • Accused of Domestic Violence:
    • Defending against criminal charges: If you’ve been accused of domestic violence, a lawyer can defend your case, challenge the evidence, and represent you in court. If possible, the lawyer can help get charges reduced or dismissed.
    • Challenging a restraining order: If someone has obtained a protective order against you, a lawyer can help you contest the order to prevent it from negatively impacting your life, including your employment and child custody rights.
    • Dealing with family law issues: Domestic violence allegations can affect child custody, divorce, and property division. A lawyer can represent your interests in family court and ensure that your parental rights are protected.
    • Avoiding criminal record implications: A lawyer can work to minimize the impact of the allegations on your record, which can affect your employment, housing, and future legal matters.

Hiring a lawyer at the earliest stages can help ensure your rights are protected and the case is handled effectively, whether you are seeking protection or defending against accusations.

What Does a Domestic Violence Lawyer Do?

A domestic violence lawyer provides various legal services depending on the specifics of your case. These responsibilities often include:

  • For Victims:
    • Filing for protective orders: A lawyer can help victims of domestic violence obtain temporary or permanent restraining orders, which provide legal protection by restricting the abuser’s access to you and your children.
    • Representing you in divorce and child custody matters: Domestic violence often leads to divorce or separation, and a lawyer can represent you in family court to protect your assets, secure custody of your children, and arrange spousal and child support.
    • Criminal representation: Lawyers work with law enforcement and prosecutors to pursue criminal charges against the abuser, ensuring that you are informed and supported throughout the legal process.
    • Safety planning and legal advice: Lawyers provide advice on how to stay safe legally and can assist in securing temporary housing, providing guidance on how to leave abusive situations safely.
  • For the Accused:
    • Defending against charges: A lawyer will build a defense by investigating the case, gathering evidence, and challenging the claims made against you. If necessary, the lawyer can negotiate with prosecutors to reduce charges or penalties.
    • Challenging protective orders: If a restraining order has been placed against you, a lawyer can contest the order and present evidence to defend against it, aiming to minimize its impact on your life and reputation.
    • Handling related family law issues: Lawyers help defend against domestic violence allegations in divorce, child custody, and visitation disputes, working to protect your parental rights and reputation.
    • Preventing long-term consequences: A lawyer will work to protect you from the long-term consequences of a domestic violence conviction, such as a criminal record that could affect employment, housing, and more.

How Are Domestic Violence Lawyers Paid?

Domestic violence lawyers generally charge for their services in different ways depending on the case's complexity and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many domestic violence lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location. Hourly rates are common for both criminal defense and family law matters.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as filing a restraining order or defending against a straightforward domestic violence charge, some lawyers offer a flat fee that covers all legal work related to that service.
  • Retainer: In complex cases, such as those involving criminal charges, divorce, and custody disputes, a lawyer may require a retainer fee, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.
  • Pro bono or reduced fees: Some domestic violence lawyers provide pro bono (free) or reduced-fee services to victims of domestic abuse who cannot afford legal representation.

It’s important to discuss fees during your consultation to ensure you understand how much your case will cost and what payment options may be available.

How Much Does a Domestic Violence Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a domestic violence lawyer depends on the complexity of your case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal work required. General cost estimates include:

  • Restraining orders: The legal fees for filing a protective or restraining order typically range from $500 to $2,500, depending on whether the case requires a hearing.
  • Criminal defense: If you’re defending against domestic violence charges, legal fees may range from $2,500 to $15,000 or more, depending on whether the case goes to trial and the severity of the charges.
  • Family law issues: Legal fees for divorce, child custody, and other family law issues related to domestic violence can range from $3,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case.
  • Hourly rates: Domestic violence lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour for their services, with more experienced lawyers charging higher rates.

Always ask for a detailed cost estimate during your consultation to understand the total cost of legal services.

Top Questions to Ask a Domestic Violence Lawyer

Before hiring a domestic violence lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the right experience and approach for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with domestic violence cases?
Ensure that the lawyer has handled domestic violence cases similar to yours, whether you’re a victim or the accused.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, flat fees, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed cost estimate.
  3. What is the likely outcome of my case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Domestic violence cases vary in length, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what might cause delays.
  5. Will I need to appear in court?
Ask if your participation in court is required, and how the lawyer plans to represent you during hearings or trials.
  6. What steps should I take to protect myself or my rights?
Whether you’re a victim seeking protection or defending against allegations, ask the lawyer how they will help you navigate the situation.

How to Check the Credibility of a Domestic Violence Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable domestic violence lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for domestic violence experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in domestic violence cases and have successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients say about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have been involved in domestic violence cases.
  • Check for memberships in relevant organizations: Look for certifications or memberships in family law or domestic violence advocacy groups, such as the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV).

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a domestic violence lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • For Victims:
    • Details of the abuse: Prepare a detailed account of the abuse, including dates, locations, and descriptions of any injuries or threats.
    • Police reports and medical records: Bring copies of any police reports, medical records, or photographs that document the abuse.
    • Legal filings: If you have already filed for a restraining order or been involved in any legal proceedings, bring copies of those documents.
    • Questions about your safety and legal options: Be ready to ask about the best steps to protect yourself and your family, as well as what legal actions you should pursue.
  • For the Accused:
    • Details of the allegations: Prepare a detailed account of the incident or allegations against you, including any evidence or witnesses that support your defense.
    • Legal documents: Bring any legal documents you have received, such as a restraining order, criminal charges, or child custody filings.
    • Questions about your defense: Prepare questions about the legal process, possible penalties, and how the lawyer plans to defend your case.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation and provide the best possible legal advice.
