Mrs. Morton was extremely knowledgeable, respectful, and fought to win in my case. Mrs. Morton gives no-nonsense honest legal advice. Mrs. Morton is well respected in the legal community by her peers which was evident as my case progressed. Mrs. Morton's advice should be followed to the "T." Mrs. Morton has extensive niche expertise with First Responder, Professional Firefighter, and Law Enforcement cases. She understands the unique challenges those clients face in the Divorce/Family Court legal arenas and is more than well prepared to advocate for her clients interests. I could not imagine going through what I did with any other attorney. There are not enough stars to positively rate Mrs. Morton. I have a wonderful relationship with my child that would be much different without Mrs. Morton's expertise and counsel. Selecting the right attorney is the first and usually most important decision you will make. I have no regrets having retained Mrs. Morton.

I hired Andreas to be my matrimonial lawyer in the summer of 2020. At that time, I was entangled in an extremely difficult divorce. The length of my marriage coupled with the fact that I had kids made the proceedings extremely difficult and challenging. On top of it all, I was thrust into a difficult child custody battle. Without any hesitation Andreas took over my case, which by its nature it was an extremely difficult case. Having been years into a marriage, having kids and multiple properties and businesses involved under my name and that of my former spouse. You can understand the degree of difficulty of my case. No words can accurately describe the help and support that I received from Andreas during that difficult stage. Without Andreas’s expertise, I would not have had the successful outcomes that I’ve had. He is professional, efficient and personable. He is an experienced lawyer, and will always be a step ahead from your thinking and that of the other party. Andreas was successful in achieving and fulfilling all the objectives that we had set from the beginning. On top of all, Andreas encountered and solved issues that no one had expected to see! He has stood by me throughout this difficult process that lasted several months, and guided me through this lengthy process. Andreas is always available, no matter the time of the day. Anything you need, he will be there. Even if you contact him, and he is in a meeting. He will text you back to tell you that he is receipt of your communication. I am grateful that I was introduced to Andreas. He is the one that turned my life around and improved my situation in a such a challenging time period. He secured my parental rights as a father, he safeguarded my financial situation, and all my objectives were met. I wholeheartedly recommend Andreas.

I hired Melanie in 2010 to defend a simple speeding ticket. I had no other offenses, and no points on my license. Melanie's efforts yielded no reduction in points, nor any reduction in fees. EXACTLY the same result I would have achieved if I had kept the $1,000 I wasted on Melanie's fee & pleaded guilty. I have no idea what she did to inspire the judge to be so unyielding, and Melanie refused to give me any account of the trial. There are no guarantees in court, but she behaved in what I consider to be a highly unprofessional manner afterwards, refusing to talk to me and denying that she was a recent grad with little experience. I regret hiring her, and hopefully she has learned her craft better by now, but I'd advise against hiring her for anything important.

For some reason I couldn’t reply on the review I wrote but I only asked for a price estimated range because I wanted to be prepared which is a common question anywhere you go not everyone is going to know how things like this work or if it’s worth something so you ask questions to make sure to be prepared. The lady continuously kept cutting me off as I spoke that’s rude no need to leave your number because I’m not calling back to this place another firm actually reached out and I was treated with respect and they answered my question with no problems about the price estimate and was very respectful and herd me out on my concerns. Take notes mabey you’ll learn how to be respectful to ones that come for help to your firm.

Beth and Andrea have done an incredible job turning things around and getting my case back on track. They are extremely knowledgeable, attentive, timely, and they are exactly who you want in your corner fighting for you. Additionally, their staff members are friendly, knowledgeable, and do what they say they are going to do without having to as twice. After he got his retainer he did nothing. No document production, no motion to get documents from prior counsel. Seven months. He told me nothing. He even tried settling my case without my knowledge. Doug has worked on my case tirelessly for over a year. His knowledge of the law and consideration of an exceedingly delicate situation has been extraordinary. He has both been incredibly professional and personable. I would recommend Doug to anyone who is in need of someone that is both caring and requires an attorney who is well-versed in the nuances of the law. In my case, Doug was able to change a seemingly impossible situation - an "onion that needed to be peeled layer by layer" as he put it. He is very thoughtful of the fact that my ex is extremely abusive and helped prepare me for what abusers typically make their next steps. In doing so, I have been better able to care for my children in devastating circumstances. He also has helped me better understand the legal process and what is typical vs atypical in the court room. Having that background, the legal jargon and proceedings were easier to comprehend in what has previously been very overwhelming. While my case is not finished yet, I expect Doug to keep fighting with the veracity and intelligence that he has exhibited thus far and will post again at the conclusion of my case! I think the best I can say so far is thank you for everything Doug!

I had an attorney and was not happy with her services. I consulted several lawyers, all of whom wanted my case for a significant retainer. I consulted with Mr. Barics who reviewed my case, and said that my current counsel was properly representing me. He explained in detail what should be done and what to do if the judge didn't do what she was supposed to do. I was ready to change lawyers, and Mr. Barics was high on the list. However, his honesty in telling me to stay with my current counsel and declining to accept a large retainer is worthy of mention. I stayed with my existing attorney, and the case proceeded nearly exactly how Mr. Barics predicted it would. I did not retain Mr. Barics then, but I am impressed he would decline a client when he felt the client was properly represented with current counsel. My former attorney has since retired and if I need new counsel Mr. Barics would be my first choice.

I was in a pannic and needed a family court lawyer asap. Joel is the only person to anwser and give me advise right away. I filed all papers and met with him the sane day. He stayed in contact and did everything he was suppose to do. I was so happy with his services and then about 6 months into the case it became harder and harder to get ahold of him. He wouldn't anwser calls or emails court dates were coming up and I had no idea because there was no communication. I really feel he didn't fight for me either. I was out of state so to him this was easy and free money. I got sick of everything and everyone came to an agreement so the case finally came to a end. I never received any of the paperwork so 1.5 months away from me suppose to pick up my daughter I start calling and emailing Joel. A course no anwser or reply then one morning I get a call from my daughter "Dad we are here". Thanks a lot Joel for your unprofessional lack of communication. You made me miss another chance to see my daughter. STAY AWAY FROM HIM HE IS GOOD AT FIRST BUT WILL LET YOU DOWN AS THE CASE GOES ON

Mr. McElwee represented me on behalf of the state in a case where I was assaulted and almost killed in a bar. Before Mr. McElwee had the cased dismissed without my knowledge there was a very capable attorney handling my situation and was extremely confident we would do well with a jury. For no apparent or explained reason McElwee pulled the attorney I was working with for a year and half and assigned a freshman ADA. She knew little about the case and when she tried to explain it to me she had the time line of events completely wrong. There was supposed to be one more hearing before court and McElwee who supervised this new attorney went into court with minimal understanding of my case. (He never spoke to me). Then he agreed with defense to drop the case. I would have never found out if 3 days later I called the court and asked when my next court date was! He was poorly prepared, he didn't understand my case and let someone who near killed me off of the hook. My recommendation is to not hire this attorney ever.

I hired Zoe recently to represent me in an OoP case after experiencing a very stressful situation with someone who was harassing, threatening and bullying me. Aside from being so incredibly knowledgeable about the legal intricacies around the case; the most important thing was that she made me feel at ease and re-assured me the entire step of the way. When i first met with her I was beside my self with worry and stress and she was incredible at explaining the entire process and what my options were. She helped me feel empowered when I personally felt defeated, and that meant so much. Suffice to say the case went in my favor and I can't thank her enough.

I hired Zoe to represent me in a family law matter. She listened carefully to my situation and was 100% effective in helping me maintain custody of my children. Because of her specialization in domestic violence matters, Zoe understood the dynamics at play and zealously defended me against my ex’s attempts to inflict further post separation abuse. After many months of enduring intense fear that he would succeed in gaining sole custody, Zoe successfully navigated the case to settlement. At the beginning of the process, Zoe presciently warned that there’s no justice to be found in the family court system. I naively hoped that the judge would see the truth, hold my ex accountable, and understand the full scope of the situation’s impact on my kids. In reality, it ended up being an exercise in damage control in which I didn’t win, but I didn’t lose either. Zoe was on my side every step of the way with realistic advice and clear communication. She used her legal expertise and negotiating skills to protect my children and I from a potentially disastrous outcome. Zoe acted with the highest integrity throughout this difficult process. I was very much impressed with her character and tireless advocacy for women and children. I recommend her legal services without hesitation.

I consulted Amanda re: a severe, traumatic, domestic violence situation: A former boyfriend has paid third parties to target me across state lines/ and within 5 states- while he remains in California- so nothing is traceable to him. I was medically harmed, and sexually assaulted after he paid off medical personnel to forcibly/unjustifiably drug me unconscious at 2 medical facilities. Amanda spoke with me for over an hour, free of charge. She listened intently to the complex details of my case while taking notes. She asked pertinent questions, before advising me on how to proceed. She informed me that there are laws prohibiting contingency arrangements for domestic violence and that I would need to consult a medical malpractice or personal injury attorney instead of a family law practitioner- because I can't financially pay ahead. Amanda was respectful, sensitive, empathetic and compassionate- and genuine in her helpfulness. I can't recommend her highly enough!!! A GEM!

Amanda represented me in a divorce proceeding involving multi-jurisdictional issues, prenuptial agreement issues, and, importantly, the custody of a special-needs child. My former spouse was represented by several of the top divorce law firms in New York, and I never felt disadvantaged or intimidated. Amanda has a good grasp of the law(s) and was always available to answer my questions. In addition, Amanda has a PhD in Clinical Psychology, so I found it easy to talk to her about my child’s psychological and educational needs. Amanda is a strong advocate and negotiator (I found Amanda was passionate about child custody issues, and it shows in court!!); she maintains her composure in court and when dealing with opposing counsel; and she has the respect of the judges. Amanda is at all times professional and focused on getting you the best outcome. If your divorce involves a special-needs child, I strongly urge you to work with Amanda.

For the 10th time I called LEGAL AID seeking legal assistance as a senior citizen since 2014. Never do they service, whatever, my issue is. This time I was referred to JUST CAUSE, who talked over me, and abruptly hung up in my hear when I said I'd just been on hold 40 minutes to ask and receive the same answer from Legal Aid; "DO you provide assistance applying for Social Security Disability?". No. They help you appeal. If you apply correctly 1st time, it would reduce the need for appeal. Legal Aid and Just Cause are REDUNDANT in their services, wasting my tax dollar. The issues I have at 60, 70, 80 are different than at 20, 30, 40. Where is the courtesy, respect and assistance we seniors deserve. Rude, rude and rude!

I hired Georgia Bonton for my divorce case in Nassau County, NY through my ARAG legal plan. Unfortunately, my experience was highly disappointing. She was consistently unresponsive to calls, texts, and emails. When she did respond, she was often multitasking with personal chores, which was unprofessional. Despite my case being relatively straightforward—given that I was married for only six months—she exacerbated my stress by providing poor guidance and unnecessarily pursuing my former spouse's income. Additionally, she conducted a skip trace on my ex-spouse's father, incurring a $1,000 expense. Not only was this irrelevant to my case, but I also never authorized such a costly action. Her handling of my case was confusing and seemed driven more by financial gain than by a genuine concern for my well-being. Although the ARAG plan covered 35 hours of legal service, she failed to utilize this coverage and continued to bill me at her hourly rate of $400. I strongly advise against using Georgia Bonton. My experience highlights significant issues with her professionalism and ethical standards.

I first retained Penny back in 2001 when I separated from my husband of 20 years. Penny prepared our separation agreement which eventually was to become our divorce agreement. Fast forward 15 years and my ex-husband filed against me to be relieved of his maintenance payments. Penny had prepared an iron-clad agreement which held up. She was there every step of the way as my advocate, always responding quickly and professionally to all my questions and calls. We won a three-tier motion which gave me the leverage to negotiate a very positive result for me. I would recommend her whole-heartedly and sincerely appreciate all her hard work and persistence. She was also very fair with her fee schedule and I would use her again in a heartbeat.

The guy shows up to a rural county court 45 minutes late and blames "traffic". Then he got owned in the lone hearing which he represented me by kid-lawyer with no case but who was prepared. He then tells me that opposing counsel has a new proposal which he'll forward to me - turns out the proposal was not new, I already received it two weeks prior, and provided him with detailed notes related to the proposal immediately. He neither read my notes or recalled that he already sent the proposal. He was either wrong about, lied about or simply took no action related to the only two important legal questions I asked him during the consultation. He's either incompetent, dishonest or lazy. My guess is lazy. I'm now on the verge of losing my children, home and career and have been forced to find new representation. You are better off representing yourself. If you are in the market for an attorney then you have too much at stake to roll the dice on this guy or this firm. Had I done so I'd have and extra $6000 and no worse off legally.

I spoke to Valerie about my prenup yesterday and was impressed with her knowledge and practical yet heartfelt approach. She was brilliant and gave me clarity and ideas on how best to move forward while being kind and empathetic rather than cold and purely business-like. I learned that sadly she cannot represent me as my boyfriend drafted the prenup under NJ law and she is licensed in NY so my search continues, but if this wasn’t the case then I would have been honored for her to take on my case, feel like she genuinely cares about the wellbeing of women and protects her clients from all angles. Wish we could have worked together and will recommend her to my NY friends.

I highly recommend Mrs. Tocci and her team. She did an excellent job, meticulous about keeping me well informed of critical dates and helped me in sorting out and assembling the necessary data needed for my case. It was a complicated divorce between assets, family trust and a very emotional custody negotiation but at every turn she and her team were professional, accommodating, efficient, trustworthy, and not intimidated by any situation that came up. I could not be happier with the final outcome.

Valerie, and Michael Stutman, represented myself in a nearly three year divorce (from a seven year marriage). She is passive, doesn't know case law, gives false promises and allows 'the other side' to push her around at every turn. She isn't organized, lets things wait until the last minute. And as a result of what I deem to be pure negligence, has potentially landed me in a situation where I may go to jail on contempt charges. Avoid at all costs. This is a very nice woman. However, she is unfit to represent as a litigator if you are looking for a fair settlement/juedgment.

What a Domestic Violence Lawyer Can Do for You

A domestic violence lawyer provides legal assistance to individuals involved in cases of domestic abuse, whether you are a victim seeking protection or someone accused of domestic violence defending against the charges. These lawyers help with obtaining restraining orders (protective orders), representing clients in criminal court, and handling related family law issues such as child custody, divorce, and visitation rights.

If you are dealing with domestic violence, a lawyer can help protect your rights and navigate the legal system to ensure your safety or defend you if you’re falsely accused.

When Should I Hire a Domestic Violence Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a domestic violence lawyer if you are:

  • A Victim of Domestic Violence:
    • Filing for a protective order (restraining order): If you need immediate protection from an abuser, a lawyer can help you file for a protective order, which legally requires the abuser to stay away from you and refrain from contacting you.
    • Divorce or separation due to abuse: If domestic violence is a factor in your relationship, a lawyer can help you pursue a divorce or legal separation and ensure that you are protected throughout the process.
    • Child custody and visitation issues: A lawyer can help you secure custody of your children and limit or restrict the abuser’s visitation rights to protect the safety of your children.
    • Filing criminal charges: If you are pursuing criminal charges against the abuser, a domestic violence lawyer can work with law enforcement and prosecutors to ensure the case is handled properly.
    • Assistance with safety planning: A lawyer can advise on the legal steps to create a safety plan, including securing temporary housing, and taking steps to protect you and your family.
  • Accused of Domestic Violence:
    • Defending against criminal charges: If you’ve been accused of domestic violence, a lawyer can defend your case, challenge the evidence, and represent you in court. If possible, the lawyer can help get charges reduced or dismissed.
    • Challenging a restraining order: If someone has obtained a protective order against you, a lawyer can help you contest the order to prevent it from negatively impacting your life, including your employment and child custody rights.
    • Dealing with family law issues: Domestic violence allegations can affect child custody, divorce, and property division. A lawyer can represent your interests in family court and ensure that your parental rights are protected.
    • Avoiding criminal record implications: A lawyer can work to minimize the impact of the allegations on your record, which can affect your employment, housing, and future legal matters.

Hiring a lawyer at the earliest stages can help ensure your rights are protected and the case is handled effectively, whether you are seeking protection or defending against accusations.

What Does a Domestic Violence Lawyer Do?

A domestic violence lawyer provides various legal services depending on the specifics of your case. These responsibilities often include:

  • For Victims:
    • Filing for protective orders: A lawyer can help victims of domestic violence obtain temporary or permanent restraining orders, which provide legal protection by restricting the abuser’s access to you and your children.
    • Representing you in divorce and child custody matters: Domestic violence often leads to divorce or separation, and a lawyer can represent you in family court to protect your assets, secure custody of your children, and arrange spousal and child support.
    • Criminal representation: Lawyers work with law enforcement and prosecutors to pursue criminal charges against the abuser, ensuring that you are informed and supported throughout the legal process.
    • Safety planning and legal advice: Lawyers provide advice on how to stay safe legally and can assist in securing temporary housing, providing guidance on how to leave abusive situations safely.
  • For the Accused:
    • Defending against charges: A lawyer will build a defense by investigating the case, gathering evidence, and challenging the claims made against you. If necessary, the lawyer can negotiate with prosecutors to reduce charges or penalties.
    • Challenging protective orders: If a restraining order has been placed against you, a lawyer can contest the order and present evidence to defend against it, aiming to minimize its impact on your life and reputation.
    • Handling related family law issues: Lawyers help defend against domestic violence allegations in divorce, child custody, and visitation disputes, working to protect your parental rights and reputation.
    • Preventing long-term consequences: A lawyer will work to protect you from the long-term consequences of a domestic violence conviction, such as a criminal record that could affect employment, housing, and more.

How Are Domestic Violence Lawyers Paid?

Domestic violence lawyers generally charge for their services in different ways depending on the case's complexity and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many domestic violence lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location. Hourly rates are common for both criminal defense and family law matters.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as filing a restraining order or defending against a straightforward domestic violence charge, some lawyers offer a flat fee that covers all legal work related to that service.
  • Retainer: In complex cases, such as those involving criminal charges, divorce, and custody disputes, a lawyer may require a retainer fee, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.
  • Pro bono or reduced fees: Some domestic violence lawyers provide pro bono (free) or reduced-fee services to victims of domestic abuse who cannot afford legal representation.

It’s important to discuss fees during your consultation to ensure you understand how much your case will cost and what payment options may be available.

How Much Does a Domestic Violence Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a domestic violence lawyer depends on the complexity of your case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal work required. General cost estimates include:

  • Restraining orders: The legal fees for filing a protective or restraining order typically range from $500 to $2,500, depending on whether the case requires a hearing.
  • Criminal defense: If you’re defending against domestic violence charges, legal fees may range from $2,500 to $15,000 or more, depending on whether the case goes to trial and the severity of the charges.
  • Family law issues: Legal fees for divorce, child custody, and other family law issues related to domestic violence can range from $3,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case.
  • Hourly rates: Domestic violence lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour for their services, with more experienced lawyers charging higher rates.

Always ask for a detailed cost estimate during your consultation to understand the total cost of legal services.

Top Questions to Ask a Domestic Violence Lawyer

Before hiring a domestic violence lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the right experience and approach for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with domestic violence cases?
Ensure that the lawyer has handled domestic violence cases similar to yours, whether you’re a victim or the accused.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, flat fees, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed cost estimate.
  3. What is the likely outcome of my case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Domestic violence cases vary in length, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what might cause delays.
  5. Will I need to appear in court?
Ask if your participation in court is required, and how the lawyer plans to represent you during hearings or trials.
  6. What steps should I take to protect myself or my rights?
Whether you’re a victim seeking protection or defending against allegations, ask the lawyer how they will help you navigate the situation.

How to Check the Credibility of a Domestic Violence Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable domestic violence lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for domestic violence experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in domestic violence cases and have successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients say about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have been involved in domestic violence cases.
  • Check for memberships in relevant organizations: Look for certifications or memberships in family law or domestic violence advocacy groups, such as the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV).

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a domestic violence lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • For Victims:
    • Details of the abuse: Prepare a detailed account of the abuse, including dates, locations, and descriptions of any injuries or threats.
    • Police reports and medical records: Bring copies of any police reports, medical records, or photographs that document the abuse.
    • Legal filings: If you have already filed for a restraining order or been involved in any legal proceedings, bring copies of those documents.
    • Questions about your safety and legal options: Be ready to ask about the best steps to protect yourself and your family, as well as what legal actions you should pursue.
  • For the Accused:
    • Details of the allegations: Prepare a detailed account of the incident or allegations against you, including any evidence or witnesses that support your defense.
    • Legal documents: Bring any legal documents you have received, such as a restraining order, criminal charges, or child custody filings.
    • Questions about your defense: Prepare questions about the legal process, possible penalties, and how the lawyer plans to defend your case.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation and provide the best possible legal advice.
