Too cocky and too sure of results before court dates that always resulted in opposite of what he was “so sure” of, also was not fully focused for my final hearing in which he failed to provide all the documents i got ready for him to the judge and afterwards i asked him why did he not provide all the documents his response was simply “I don’t know”...after final court date i gave him calm honest feedback face to face which he was not professional enough to handle and got very defensive and raised his voice to me in front of others at the court house...would not recommend at all for any services.

I was referred to David after I noticed my original attorney seems to be working against me with the opposing attorneys rather than for me. He was attempting to make me settle on terms that I wasn't comfortable with and that I did not want to accept. David listened to my needs, analyzed the whole situation, and requested documents for review and was totally honest & transparent throughout the process. With a mediator, we were able to accept a much better settlement than previously proposed. I highly recommend David for any family law services you need.

I would highly recommend David to anyone seeking representation for Family Court. He was my attorney through a very lengthy divorce. He was always very honest, knowledgeable, thorough and competent with every aspect of my case...which, at times, became very contentious. He always provided confidence and positive assurances when I was feeling hopeless. Divorce can be very trying, but I always knew I could count on David to reel me in and provide sound advice for a favorable outcome. I would recommend David over and over!

Evonne was actually referred to us by our first lawyer. We were in a unique situation where the law really didn’t seem to fit our situation and kept being told that there was nothing that we could do. We were desperate and frustrated and felt helpless and afraid. After a year of dead ends, Evonne came up with creative options and alternative avenues with thoughtful and insightful considerations should we choose each path. She was compassionate and caring about our grandchild but also to us. We cannot say enough how much we appreciate her responsiveness, creativity, persistence, and expertise. We consider Evonne to be a tremendous blessing and are happy to offer a referral.

If you hire to have her to represent you to do a separation agreement, please read it very closely. Or have them review it closely with you are clear what the terms are, it reflects your desires, and there are no careless errors. I made the mistake of not doing either. It was a very emotional and difficult time and I trusted the agreement had the terms we had discussed prior to her office drafting it. The SA included terms that were not only undesirable, but definitely not in my best interests or the best interests of my children.. I am not giving her one star because I will say her office staff was responsive when I had to email/contact the office. But there was no excuse for the errors in the Agreement - esp when my ex spouse wasn’t asking for them or pushing for these terms that she included. And their office was only representing me. This was not a mediated agreement.

Libby is a bulldog in divorce cases. She ran circles around my ex's 'country' lawyer, and got me the best settlement package imaginable. We never had to go to court, and she controlled the entire nasty situation after my wife's infidelity. I got the kids, the house, the cars, and alimony payments, and my ex has to write a check for 12 years to pay for her indiscretions.

Nothing against this firm in terms of expenses, Divorce is an expensive ordeal and does take significant research and work to formalize a proper agreement based on special situations and individual situations. While one must be prepared for such legal costs over all the experience with Hartsoe and Associates was amazing. Specially, me being in the US Army, I was not always available for reaching out to, but despite they handled my case exceptionally well and came out with an amicable out of court settlement ! which is something I wanted from the start. Thank you Steven Grainger in particular for your legal representation and also the staff in connection.

Wow what an outstanding firm..Even though they were not able to assist me in my unique situation, they still took the time to advise me in path I needed to take and gave me a referral to somewhere that might be able to help..even took the time to call me back just to give me more information that could help me.. I really hate that they couldn't help me because this is the type of firm I want to represent me. Someone who is there for the client and not the pay check...thanks again for the help.

I had the pleasure of working for the Melissa and her team for 2 years. Had I not moved out of NC I would still be working there. Melissa was an excellent boss and teacher. Though at the time i had over 12 years of experience, none of them were in family law. Her and the team took the time to teach me the ins and outs of family law. I moved knowing if I took another position in family law, I would have the knowledge to succeed. I will always appreciate my time with the Averett team!

Had a really bad experience using this lawfirm and I don't agree with any of the positive reviews could all be fake. This attorney used me as a cashcow regarding a civil dispute, never actually accomplished anything we wanted him to achieve, In short we hired this attorney to handle a civil dispute. After hiring him, he requested we do all this sort of work so he could gather it up and fight this civil dispute. After months of using him and bills racking up, he did little to nothing, didn't produce any results and we wasted tens of thousands on him. Overall the worst experience I had using any attorney.

I can't say enough good things about this law firm. I was applying for my disability and they handled every step of the case with me and kept me updated on everything. They even done my initial application to get started. Tammy and Tyler was amazing to deal with. Tammy was very comforting and knowledgeable when I was losing hope on my case and faced my first denial and Tyler was so helpful they reassured that this was very common and not to lose faith. He made sure I was well prepared for court and helped me every step of the way and made sure I understood everything. They even addressed concerns and questions on their personal time. Tyler even called after just getting back from his vacation and talked with me for 2 hours to make sure I was comfortable before going into court the next day.. I can't thank everyone there especially Tammy and Tyler for guiding me through a very stressful time consuming court case. I highly recommended this law firm if you are trying to get on your disability.

As an Alamance county resident, I had a hard time finding a family attorney in the Wake area that I was comfortable with. After doing some thorough research I came across Jake Terrell, and pick him because of his great reviews, dedication and knowledgeable background. Jake has represented me in 2 cases within the year and has been able to get me the results I wanted BOTH times. The second case was extremely rare and when I spoke to Jake about it he was super eager to handle it. I could tell he put in the work the day of court because he handle it with flying colors! He made everything stress free and was extremely helpful.. not to mention everything was a short notice, yet Jake had no problem showing up! Jake’s communication skills and work ethic never goes unnoticed with me, therefore I HIGHLY recommend him for any family law cases. Thank you Jake for everything you’ve done for me and my son!

My sister is a black , single mother of 2. She has several degrees, and was still in school trying to get the highest education she could. Although , like no other a terrible situation occurred , and being in a town like this of course, you’re prone to be racially profiled. In addition, she thought she had a great lawyer but as always the system fails us tremendously. This lawyer is why im writing this review today, so others wont make the same mistakes he did. I have seen the system fail multiple people in my community! Although I never thought YOUR REPRESENTATION , would be so ignoble and fail you without any remorse. Please let him represent you at your own risk. I forgive him for his lack of a job but in due time, I pray you reevaluate yourself and make a change to protect your client instead of being indulged into the money!

I am absolutely heart broken with the lack of care that was used. I retained Abby Holt to represent me regarding an estate dispute. Cut and dry my dad’s siblings said I didn’t exist and claimed to be his only heirs. This issue was time sensitive. She did nothing but makes phone calls, no letters or emails documenting correspondence between administrators atty..nothing. She left the firm and me without representation after nearly 5 months... She never filed a claim on my behalf. I’m not a lawyer I assumed I only needed to prove our relationship. She never should have taken my case or money. Now it’s too late for me to file a claim..

I thought I was the only one that had the experience that I did when going here. Then I spoke to someone else that just came straight out with this information without any prompting. By the time me and the other client had left her office (another man dealing with custody).......we thought she was our ex wives attourney. Basically if your a man trying to get your kids you can forget it. According to Mrs Gillespie theres nothing you can do and your ex can do whatever she wants and you might as well accept that and move on. I can tell you this is not the case with all lawyers. But again.......IF YOUR A MAN......seek council elsewhere.

REGINA IS THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS. I recently went through a separation and divorce. I desperately needed someone in my corner to fight for me and my children. I always felt like Ms. Gillespie respected me and had my family's best interest at heart. Every time I went to court with Ms. Gillespie by my side, I walked out winning a little more ground for myself and my kids-- and with a little more confidence. This is the first negative review I've ever posted on any platform. Hiring Teresa Hier has been an absolute nightmare. I paid Teresa $5,000 to represent me while attempting to modify child custody/child support for my children. My ex and I came up with an agreement back in October 2021 and here we are in March 2022 and I am no closer then when I started this process. Teresa went 23 days without even responding to me to provide an update. She cancelled 3 different appointments to further delay everything. She refused to write up the agreement for my ex and I. To make it worse, she will not cancel our motion therefore we can't move on with our lives.

Had a few meetings(paid everything up front and in full) provided every piece of information I could for custody and immediate divorce hoping for the best for my children. He went above and beyond and the ladies in the office were always super helpful. In the end I was awarded full custody with strict visitation to be decided by me. Hiring Victoria Hardin to help me through my divorce was the best decision that I made. Throughout the entirety of the 3-plus years that I worked with her, she demonstrated the most incredible professionalism, intelligence and fought for me and my family's best interests with compassion and integrity. I did not want a "slimy", mean-spirited lawyer, and was so thankful for Attorney Hardin, as she expertly handled everything that the opposing side did with such grace and never once made me feel compromised or misrepresented. On the contrary I felt from the first that I could trust her to take my part and she always knew exactly what the right course would be. She was especially impressive in court, where her level of preparedness, intellect and professional conduct honestly made me feel (a little) bad for the opposing counsel because they simply could not compete or keep up with her. Do not be fooled by how gentle mannered she is when you meet her - she is a fighter in court and I was thankful for how she encouraged me to stand up for myself and what was best for my family. She communicated clearly and consistently with me and made sure I was always clear with what was happening. Ultimately she and her excellent team were able to bring my case to an ideal conclusion and apart from counting her as the most exceptional lawyer, I also feel privileged to have known her has a truly excellent person. You will not regret hiring Victoria Hardin to represent you, but you will absolutely regret it if you do not and have to face her in court! In summary, in my case, Victoria Hardin: 1. Was clear with me about what steps I needed to take at every turn, communicated quickly and efficiently with me. 2. Always, always knew exactly what was going on with my case and was never caught off guard or unprepared 3. Never overcharged me or wasted my time. I quickly learned that if she did not call me for a period of time, it was because nothing had happened, and she did not want to waste my money with calls or emails that had no new information (really, this is important!) 4. Worked very well with opposing counsel and had excellent relationships which ultimately led to a settlement out of court. 5. Was always extremely prepared for court, with copies of all necessary papers bound for me to follow along with. She was so well-organized, the judge and even opposing counsel relied on her binders because they didn't have the same level of organization on their side! 6. Her legal team and employees are amazing too. They are helpful and kind and I felt they actually cared about me and my family. Truly a pleasure to work with. 7. Integrity, integrity, integrity - I was very worried that this ugly divorce process would get nasty and make me feel compromised in my values. I needn't have worried with Victoria Hardin. She fought tooth and nail for me and my family, but did so with integrity, honesty and a truly moral manner, not to mention grace and good humor. I found her tone and approach to be absolutely perfect and was impressed with her as an excellent person and not just a great lawyer. 8. Nobody could possibly work harder than Victoria for her clients, and it shows

She moves as a very slow pace, placed on retainer for exceedingly too long, this probably nothing we don’t already know. These types of cases ie. divorce, are money pit opportunities for these lawyers. Don’t be deceived by their or her sweet language. If you feel it isn’t right please don’t feel like you’re too invested. Their Greediness and corruption is found between the fine lines of what is not said. It feels almost as this office works together alongside the other lawyers. I hope this helps someone.

I was recommended to Hardin Law firm by several people that I know. Each and everyone person that I spoke to had positive reviews. When I went for my initial consultation, I was treated with nothing but respect and understanding. Ms. Hardin was very easy to open up too and she immediately knew how to handle my situation. I have learned that Ms. Hardin is very good at reading people and because of that she knew how to speak to me and help me understand what I was going through and what to expect. Everything Ms. Hardin said would happen actually did happen. She had helped me get awarded what I wanted and needed for my children and I. That gave me a sense of relief and helped me feel empowered and ok. As long as I followed instructions and did my part as her client, it worked in my favor. I think her ability to take the time to understand what type of person she is helping, allows her to speak and handle things a certain way that her client ,no matter how different each once is all feels safe, protected and heard. She keeps her promise and I am so thankful to have chosen Ms. Hardin to represent me. She is amazing and more then amazing at what she does. I appreciate Ms. Hardin and her staffs hard work.

I am so thankful for Jenifer McCrea. She has been there through the early phases of my tbi and dealt with my crying and confusion and has explained things for me. She pushed to make my life better and knew how much my child meant to me. Having her represent me, has made me feel much better, She initially helped me with a no contact order and I feel helped lift a long isolation after the hospital by fighting to help me see my partner once again after months. She then helped me with what meant most to me in the world— and I can’t thank her enough. I’m more than pleased that she listened and fought for my family. I can’t thank her enough for not just representing me, but genuinely caring and pushing how she has. Her knowledge and expertise have helped someone who doesn’t know the law and when I say I will finally sleep well for the first time since my accident, I mean every single word. Thank you for giving me peace and helping me when I felt no one understood, because not only did she help in legal ways, but A LOT with my mental health by helping a depression I have had since this whole incident. I highly recommend her!!

I hired Foushee to help with my high conflict divorce. She charged me 5k right from the start and never bothered to meet me in person. Lacked empathy towards my situation. Withdrew from my case because I did what the police told me to do and filed a 50 B. She disagreed with it. I was never refunded the any money and she basically didn’t do anything but refer me to the worst attorney in the world. An attorney that is well known for doing a terrible job. I’ve met other women in divorce care who felt like Foushee treated them poorly and disrespectfully. In my opinion she turns her nose up at stay at home moms. Terrible. Wouldn’t recommend her to anyone.

My trial has been ongoing since 2018. Ms. Foushee has been representing my ex-wife since 2018. I have no problem with this. I do however have an extreme problem with how she has represented my children, which is why this firm deserves negative stars. My children have been represented by Ms. Whitney Foushee since 2018. To my knowledge, Ms. Foushee has no children, has no idea what it is like to be a parent, and she should not be representing children in court in my humble opinion. In 2018, I signed a document, without proper legal counsel, after constant pressure and manipulation by my ex-wife. This document, which Ms. Foushee created, directly contributed to the disintegration of the relationship with my children. Since signing that document, my children have never stepped foot in my home, and have only spent one night with me in the past 3+ years. I was not even allowed to visit them at their school before they moved to Florida. Please put yourself in this situation and try to understand the emotional and psychological damage this can do to a person. This firm does not care about your children. The only thing this firm cares about is your money. I have taken responsibility for the action of signing that document. I demand the same responsibility/accountability for the attorney who would draft such a document. Please google search and read through the following articles that discuss parental alienation as a form of child abuse, and reference how attorneys like Whitney Foushee should be held responsible for this child abuse as well. Parental Alienation (Syndrome)-A serious form of psychological child abuse" Ment Health Fam Med (2018) 14: 725-739. This was published by Dr. Boch in the Journal of Mental Health and Family Medicine in 2018. Parental Alienation as a Form of Emotional Child Abuse: Current State of Knowledge and Future Directions for Research (Family Science Review, Volume 22, Issue 4, 2018). This document was published by Dr. Kruk in the journal of Family Science Review in 2018. Parental Alienating Behaviors: An Unacknowledged Form of Family Violence. Attorney Keith Metz has been representing me on a case since July and I must say he is the best attorney I have come across. He has been patient, he has been flexible and has adapted to my needs even with me being out of state. He has taken a great weight off of my shoulders and has made this process nearly painless. I highly recommend him to everyone in the Charlotte area, he is amazing and responsible! He is on top of things, will always get to you in a timely manner and will keep you updated. Do not hesitate to place your trust in the Metz Law Firm!

The whole team at Bull and Reinhardt is great! I recently worked with attorney Anna Bowkett on a divorce case. She was always very attentive and helpful, and I really appreciated her bright, bubbly personality, her concise communication, and especially her punctuality in answering any questions I had. I felt empowered knowing she had my back. She knows her stuff. Thanks Anna!

Paid 3,000 up front for a child custody battle. It was 6,000 total. Natalie was my attorney was cordial and cold all at the same time. They charge $40.00 per email per call. They do allow you to make payments for the balance. Which was $500.00 a month. Once paid the $3,000.00 I never heard from them for about 30 days. They did informed me that they email me but it went to junk because they don’t normally email me. But they allow 30 days to pass and had said nothing. They say they were waiting on me but in 30 days they never followed up to make sure I got the email. The assistant was explaining this while at the same time missing my opportunity to get on the court calendar since I haven’t seen my daughter in a Year and half and asking for another $500.00 dollars payment. I had to do dispute for the funds back because they would not refund me the funds back. That takes 60-90 days. So now my money is tied up until that clears and I still don’t get to see my princess. In short they were second biggest waste of time and money coming close to first to my Ex-wife!

Seems like reviews are everywhere. I read them to try and gain some insight from the voices of the many. Every now again, I even try my hand at writing one. Then there are the moments that it is absolutely necessary to share your experience with others and this is one of those times. While there is not enough time to take you through all the twist and turns that lead us to the doorsteps of the practice of Phillips & McCrea, PLLC and ultimately Mr. Phillips, it proved to be out of the many things that were not going in our favor, the very one thing that did and it made all the difference in our outcome. We have a special needs child and needed help with his disability case after some experiences that we will just describe by saying that we wish they were not a part of our story. If you live long enough you know the road bends and it turns and what becomes certain in this life is that nothing is for certain. But there was a ram in the bush and if you know what that expression means, then you know the importance of the job Mr. Phillips rendered unto us at a professional level that not only is uncommon today; but you could make a strong argument if it even exist. Our experience with Mr. Phillips takes us through multiple years where even we wanted to surrender because we had nothing left in the tank; and I’m not talking about our tank was low, I mean notta, zero, zilch! Yet if not for Mr. Phillips encouragement in the face of what seemed insurmountable, his willingness to be patient and steadfast, and his professional acumen, our path would have been altered in ways we could not explain. If anyone may have any doubts, unanswered questions or any reservations as to whether you have found the right attorney, I would ask that you stop what you are doing immediately and call Mr. Phillips on the phone NOW!!! Not only do we highly recommend him, drop the mic here………. I will end this review by leaving you with a very important question. From personal experience I know how important it is to choose the right attorney to guide you through legal matters that a high level of expertise and sophistication is not only required, but demanded, why would you trust anyone else in such a time as this?

I started an appeal with Attorney Jurney for custody. She didn't do anything on my case for over a year. Afterward, I decided to drop the appeal since the other party filed a motion and moved my case to another county, which was approved by the judge. Attorney Alicia has promised a refund, and almost 2 years later, nothing. They do not answer their calls or return emails when supposed to. I have had mercy and have waited months before writing this review, in fact I wrote a review about 4 months ago, and they reached out to me and told me they were going to get my refund just so I can take the review down, but never heard anything back after multiple emails.

Ms. Jurney is representing me in a child custody and support case. Throughout the prep work to the temporary hearing, I was thoroughly impressed by the amount of information we were able to exchange at each meeting, how quickly Ms. Jurney comprehended complicated expenses and child support calculations, and how well Ms. Jurney prepared herself was for the hearing. Going into the hearing, I already knew that not only was Ms. Jurney a highly effective lawyer, she had also well familiarized herself with the details of my situation and the disturbed mental state of the defendant to be able to handle the examinations well. For me, facing the defendant who abused me for over 10 years was terrifying. Ms. Jurney's calm, confidence, compassion and faith in me was the key that helped me remain calm and focused. From my observation that day and my past experience at other (50B) hearings, her professionalism and competency clearly stood out in the courtroom. I feel very fortunate to have Ms. Jurney representing me.

Alicia is a highly skilled, competent and knowledgeable attorney. She helped me tremendously to stay calm during mediation and solved all the problems with professional skill, digging at the opposing party for the needed info. I already recommended Alicia to my friends and will keep doing so. I would hire her in a heartbeat again if ever needed. Alicia is extremely effective. I am forever grateful for finding her.

We have tried several times to contact Ms. Holliday over the last several months with no response. We had to contact the district court to find out that Ms. Holliday failed to appear in court on our last court date. Her negligence has landed us all Failures to Appear on our cases. All of her clients in this matter would really appreciate a response from her and want to know how she is going to fix this.

What a Domestic Violence Lawyer Can Do for You

A domestic violence lawyer provides legal assistance to individuals involved in cases of domestic abuse, whether you are a victim seeking protection or someone accused of domestic violence defending against the charges. These lawyers help with obtaining restraining orders (protective orders), representing clients in criminal court, and handling related family law issues such as child custody, divorce, and visitation rights.

If you are dealing with domestic violence, a lawyer can help protect your rights and navigate the legal system to ensure your safety or defend you if you’re falsely accused.

When Should I Hire a Domestic Violence Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a domestic violence lawyer if you are:

  • A Victim of Domestic Violence:
    • Filing for a protective order (restraining order): If you need immediate protection from an abuser, a lawyer can help you file for a protective order, which legally requires the abuser to stay away from you and refrain from contacting you.
    • Divorce or separation due to abuse: If domestic violence is a factor in your relationship, a lawyer can help you pursue a divorce or legal separation and ensure that you are protected throughout the process.
    • Child custody and visitation issues: A lawyer can help you secure custody of your children and limit or restrict the abuser’s visitation rights to protect the safety of your children.
    • Filing criminal charges: If you are pursuing criminal charges against the abuser, a domestic violence lawyer can work with law enforcement and prosecutors to ensure the case is handled properly.
    • Assistance with safety planning: A lawyer can advise on the legal steps to create a safety plan, including securing temporary housing, and taking steps to protect you and your family.
  • Accused of Domestic Violence:
    • Defending against criminal charges: If you’ve been accused of domestic violence, a lawyer can defend your case, challenge the evidence, and represent you in court. If possible, the lawyer can help get charges reduced or dismissed.
    • Challenging a restraining order: If someone has obtained a protective order against you, a lawyer can help you contest the order to prevent it from negatively impacting your life, including your employment and child custody rights.
    • Dealing with family law issues: Domestic violence allegations can affect child custody, divorce, and property division. A lawyer can represent your interests in family court and ensure that your parental rights are protected.
    • Avoiding criminal record implications: A lawyer can work to minimize the impact of the allegations on your record, which can affect your employment, housing, and future legal matters.

Hiring a lawyer at the earliest stages can help ensure your rights are protected and the case is handled effectively, whether you are seeking protection or defending against accusations.

What Does a Domestic Violence Lawyer Do?

A domestic violence lawyer provides various legal services depending on the specifics of your case. These responsibilities often include:

  • For Victims:
    • Filing for protective orders: A lawyer can help victims of domestic violence obtain temporary or permanent restraining orders, which provide legal protection by restricting the abuser’s access to you and your children.
    • Representing you in divorce and child custody matters: Domestic violence often leads to divorce or separation, and a lawyer can represent you in family court to protect your assets, secure custody of your children, and arrange spousal and child support.
    • Criminal representation: Lawyers work with law enforcement and prosecutors to pursue criminal charges against the abuser, ensuring that you are informed and supported throughout the legal process.
    • Safety planning and legal advice: Lawyers provide advice on how to stay safe legally and can assist in securing temporary housing, providing guidance on how to leave abusive situations safely.
  • For the Accused:
    • Defending against charges: A lawyer will build a defense by investigating the case, gathering evidence, and challenging the claims made against you. If necessary, the lawyer can negotiate with prosecutors to reduce charges or penalties.
    • Challenging protective orders: If a restraining order has been placed against you, a lawyer can contest the order and present evidence to defend against it, aiming to minimize its impact on your life and reputation.
    • Handling related family law issues: Lawyers help defend against domestic violence allegations in divorce, child custody, and visitation disputes, working to protect your parental rights and reputation.
    • Preventing long-term consequences: A lawyer will work to protect you from the long-term consequences of a domestic violence conviction, such as a criminal record that could affect employment, housing, and more.

How Are Domestic Violence Lawyers Paid?

Domestic violence lawyers generally charge for their services in different ways depending on the case's complexity and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many domestic violence lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location. Hourly rates are common for both criminal defense and family law matters.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as filing a restraining order or defending against a straightforward domestic violence charge, some lawyers offer a flat fee that covers all legal work related to that service.
  • Retainer: In complex cases, such as those involving criminal charges, divorce, and custody disputes, a lawyer may require a retainer fee, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.
  • Pro bono or reduced fees: Some domestic violence lawyers provide pro bono (free) or reduced-fee services to victims of domestic abuse who cannot afford legal representation.

It’s important to discuss fees during your consultation to ensure you understand how much your case will cost and what payment options may be available.

How Much Does a Domestic Violence Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a domestic violence lawyer depends on the complexity of your case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal work required. General cost estimates include:

  • Restraining orders: The legal fees for filing a protective or restraining order typically range from $500 to $2,500, depending on whether the case requires a hearing.
  • Criminal defense: If you’re defending against domestic violence charges, legal fees may range from $2,500 to $15,000 or more, depending on whether the case goes to trial and the severity of the charges.
  • Family law issues: Legal fees for divorce, child custody, and other family law issues related to domestic violence can range from $3,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case.
  • Hourly rates: Domestic violence lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour for their services, with more experienced lawyers charging higher rates.

Always ask for a detailed cost estimate during your consultation to understand the total cost of legal services.

Top Questions to Ask a Domestic Violence Lawyer

Before hiring a domestic violence lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the right experience and approach for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with domestic violence cases?
Ensure that the lawyer has handled domestic violence cases similar to yours, whether you’re a victim or the accused.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, flat fees, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed cost estimate.
  3. What is the likely outcome of my case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Domestic violence cases vary in length, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what might cause delays.
  5. Will I need to appear in court?
Ask if your participation in court is required, and how the lawyer plans to represent you during hearings or trials.
  6. What steps should I take to protect myself or my rights?
Whether you’re a victim seeking protection or defending against allegations, ask the lawyer how they will help you navigate the situation.

How to Check the Credibility of a Domestic Violence Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable domestic violence lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for domestic violence experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in domestic violence cases and have successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients say about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have been involved in domestic violence cases.
  • Check for memberships in relevant organizations: Look for certifications or memberships in family law or domestic violence advocacy groups, such as the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV).

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a domestic violence lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • For Victims:
    • Details of the abuse: Prepare a detailed account of the abuse, including dates, locations, and descriptions of any injuries or threats.
    • Police reports and medical records: Bring copies of any police reports, medical records, or photographs that document the abuse.
    • Legal filings: If you have already filed for a restraining order or been involved in any legal proceedings, bring copies of those documents.
    • Questions about your safety and legal options: Be ready to ask about the best steps to protect yourself and your family, as well as what legal actions you should pursue.
  • For the Accused:
    • Details of the allegations: Prepare a detailed account of the incident or allegations against you, including any evidence or witnesses that support your defense.
    • Legal documents: Bring any legal documents you have received, such as a restraining order, criminal charges, or child custody filings.
    • Questions about your defense: Prepare questions about the legal process, possible penalties, and how the lawyer plans to defend your case.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation and provide the best possible legal advice.
