I have nothing but great things to say about them. My mom, Tyra, has been with them for years. She will not seek out another law office because they are the best and, I agree, so kind and thorough; you can see that although yes, you hired them and they have to do a job, you can tell it’s genuine and they really desire to bring you justice in whatever the case is.

My wife and I had been putting off getting a will for many years. We envisioned stuffy formal offices manned with gruff, cigar comping, self important lawyers in Italian suits and Rolexes! We were also worried if we could afford it. My wife read about an Elder Law office in our town and was impressed with their commitment to family legal matters. We decided to make an appointment. From the minute we walked into Estate Planning & Elder Law Center of Brevard we felt welcome. The surroundings were cozy and professional. We were immediately greeted and offered coffee and water. Our initial consultation was informative, thorough, and congenial. The attorneys Robin and Roger are exemplary executives, and along with Erica, Jennifer, and Danielle, Elder Law Center is in excellent, capable hands. We now have a gorgeous binder complete with our will, living trust, and all the trimmings. In many ways we feel this is one of the best investments we've ever made.We extend our praise and deep thanks to Elder Law Center of Brevard. Highly Recommended! My mother went in to make a few amendments to the existing documents Elder Law Center had drawn up a few years ago. Robin Petersen Esq. was efficient and detail oriented. My mom was supposed to come back a few weeks later to sign the documents. Two days later the office informed her that her documents were ready for review. The office staff was able to make time for her to come in immediately to sign. This was a huge relief to have everything done so quickly. Erica and the rest of the office staff were so incredibly sweet to my mother. Erica made sure to go over everything carefully so that my mother understood everything. Erica even spoke to my mother in Spanish to make the process even easier for her to understand. I would 100% recommend their services to anyone in need of estate planning.

As has always been the case, Randy Bryan handled our estate needs professionally and to the highest standards. He makes the legal jargon clear and easy to understand and does this with kindness and empathy. This is our second visit to this office and we will always count on them to handle any needs we have in the future. Thank you, Randy.

Last year my neighbor and friend, recently deceased, based upon my recommendation hired Peggy Hoyt to create a Pet Trust to provide her 24+- horse located in Wisconsin, dog and 4 cats (located in Florida) care after she died, as part of her will. I was thrilled that my neighbor took my advice and hired Peggy Hoyt. This pet trust assures that funds from her estate have been set aside to provide feed and other needs for her animals. Additionally, my neighbor and friend, as part of a life estate agreement was verbally guaranteed her horses could remain on the property until they died. At this time, all horses have care and are fat and happy grazing every day, on the land they were promised for life. I am confident, my friend and neighbor made the right decision when she hired Peggy and now that the Probate for her estate has been approved and after legal issues soon to be resolved, plans for the lifetime care of the horses will be finalized.

I am currently having to work with this firm with my late grandmother's trust. The only thing I can say is RUN. The billable is around 500 a hour, and the paperwork will be riddled with mistakes. I have personally delivered important information to their office directly, and it was still wrong on the final draft. Hire this firm if you like talking to paralegals and receptionists just to have your "lawyer" skim it and send it. Take your money to someone who cares, not these people.

Whether you have a need in real estate, probate, estate planning, or business matter that requires an attorney, I always highly recommend Reed, Mawhinney & Link. Of course they are professional and they're also caring and compassionate. They have been such a great resource for me and I appreciate all they do. Not to mention how involved they are in the community! Again, if you need an attorney for business matters, real estate, estate planning, or probate, look no further than RML!

This is got to be the most crooked, dishonest,, person walking on this earth says he’s an attorney he’s not he’s just out for whatever he can get from his clients. I literally watched him try to take a man’s home that was fighting for his home. That’s messed up is at not and this man had to pay $5000 just to take his case, and then he quit on him the day he was supposed to appear before the judge., he wanted more money when he hadn’t done anything so far so this person said no and they ended up in court against each other and my friend one Mr. Steve Hartman did not

Geoffrey just did A-Z estate planning for my family and we were very pleased with his firm. They met with us at our convenience and got everything squared away for us in a timely manner and before we left the country on vacation. Needless to say; we were able to relax even more on our vacation knowing that our family affairs are in order should anything happen. We absolutely recommend the Family First Firm to our friends, family, and anyone needing to plan for their families future. They made this experience about as easy and enjoyable as it can be.

When my Father, a 90-year-old WWII veteran, indicated that, he was no longer able to manage his affairs I had to act quickly. I had never been privy to my Father’s finances or affairs until he asked for help. Furthermore, I live out of state. I was stressed handling this matter from afar. Luckily, Attorney Geoff Hoatson was recommended by my father’s longtime attorney as a specialist in Estate Planning. From the beginning, Geoff and his staff were clear, efficient, professional, and caring. Geoff and his staff worked quickly and offered solutions to issues I did not even know we had. He and his staff accommodated my schedule to ensure all matters were well attended. They are attentive to detail and responsive. I highly recommend Attorney Geoffrey Hoatson and The Family First Firm!

My father set up a trust with Chris Vorbeck in the early 2000's. When Dad passed, the movement of everything to Mother could not have been smoother. When Mother passed 5 years later, Chris took care of everything moving assets smoothly to me. My wife and I set up our own trust with his help and it always felt like we were his only clients. I have had very little experience with attorneys in my lifetime, but I can not imagine it being any easier that Chris Vorbeck made the process. He felt like a member of the family.

Hired to handle a summary administration for my mother. There was only a single asset— a house— so I expected a fairly quick resolution. The sale of the house was delayed when this office failed to file a death certificate. Delays caused at several other points by taking several weeks to file simple paperwork. Doesn’t seem given the fee structure where you pay up front that they have any incentive to work in a timely manner.

I wholeheartedly recommend Mr. Brandon A. Steel, Esq. to any veteran struggling with the VA disability system. As a veteran myself, I attempted to navigate the complex process of claiming compensation for my disabilities on my own but met with little success. That's when I turned to Mr. Steel and I'm so grateful that I did. From the moment I reached out to him, he treated me with the respect, compassion, and understanding that can be hard to find when you're feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. He took the time to personally answer all my questions, no matter how small they seemed, and made me feel like I had a true advocate in my corner. Mr. Steele has a deep understanding of the VA system and knew exactly how to present my case to secure the compensation I deserved. He took immediate action on my behalf, cutting through the red tape and bureaucratic hurdles that had held me back for so many years. Thanks to Mr. Brandon Steele I finally received the disability benefits I had been fighting for. His expertise, dedication, and unwavering support made all the difference. If you're a veteran struggling to get the assistance you need, don't hesitate to reach out to Mr. Steele, who will be your champion every step of the way.

Wendi is not only professional, but also personable and empathetically sensitive to your emotional state of mind. This is very important when you have never experienced a divorce in your past before contracting with her. My first conversations with her gave me a feeling of confidence that she was going to be a very good choice for me. Throughout the brief proceedings, she provided the guidance that I needed and was always open to suggestions from me, as well as consistently providing helpful answers to my questions. Between us, and her counseling, we devised an agreeable strategy that became a satisfying success in its outcome. And, as it turns out, seemingly for both sides, because it ended without any perceived animosities. It would be a severe understatement just to only say that Wendi has what it takes to provide the best divorce advocate a person could expect because she excels at what she does and provides more certainty. This is my way of giving back some of what she provided for me during a very important and stressful period of my life.

My father and I worked with Mr. Hemness from another state assisting us with a guardianship case. We all knew that it would have its bumps, but his extensive knowledge of both Florida law and laws in other states, ease in navigating the system, and gentle calming manner brought this process to a conclusion before other lawyers in the area would even give us an appointment for a consultant. He is extremely responsive to both email and telephone calls. I simply could not have asked for anything more. Gerald Hemness' education and experience by themselves are an impressive package. He is a well-seasoned attorney in guardianship law. Gerald can assess your case and give clear, thorough guidance for every step of the way. His patience is unsurpassed, and he promptly answers every question respectfully. He prepares you for success in and out of the courtroom. We would highly recommend Gerald to anyone who finds themselves at any stage of this process. We were in an urgent situation, and Mr. Hemness went out of his way to take our case. He was like a kind, older brother leading us through every step. His advice was straightforward, and his charges were reasonable – he's everything you would hope for when utilizing the services of an attorney for this type of case. Guardianship is a necessary but oftentimes unpleasant step that is required to chart a safe path for a loved one's future, and it can bring up so many emotions. Mr. Hemness successfully helped us gain the custody we sought of our family member.

I have never met Ms. Pittman, but my grandfather who passed in January, hired her to do all of his estate planning. I was designated as his Power of Attorney the last 2 years of his life and am also the executor of his Will, as laid out in his will by Ms. Pittman. My grandfather had said she did a pretty good job, and when he passed I was able to take care of everything from the will and paperwork that her office provided. Well, just this last week, I received a phone call from another attorney who said he had received my phone number from Amy regarding his client wanting to get something from the estate. This was a surprise to me as I hadn't given her office permission to give out my personal information. And the client of this attorney was someone that we did not want to be involved with and there was nothing to give out from the estate that hadn't already been provided to the named beneficiaries. I called Amy's office to find out if she had given out my phone number and talk to her about what I should do. She would not talk to me at all, so I had to talk to her assistant. Her assistant to me that Amy told her that she had given the other attorney information that I was the executor of the estate which should be public information. I asked her if she could tell me what specific information she gave the other Attorney, but she wouldn't say. She said that if I wanted to talk to Amy directly she would schedule an hour, and I would have to pay her hourly fee. This to me seems ridiculous as she was hired by my Grandfather who died only recently that she won't even talk to me at all without me paying her. I am upset that she would give out my personal information, which is not public info to anyone, much less this lawyer. This does not seem to be professional behavior and as the hired lawyer for my grandfather, I would think that she could complete her work regarding any open matters to me as the executor and prior Power of Attorney for my grandfather, especially if her office is giving out my information to people without my approval.

As a recent widow, I was looking for an attorney that I felt comfortable with on a personal as well as professional level. I had met with a couple of other people prior to meeting with Amy, but after our first meeting, I knew I had met the person I wanted to handle my legal affairs. She explained exactly what I would need and how much it would cost. After discussing my family and my finances, she recommended a Trust package, including living will and rollover will. After a year, I have been back once, to amend my Trust, and will continue to check it regularly and return to Amy's office for help and advice, if needed.

After years of multiple hip surgeries it was a stroke in April 2023 that ended up putting my wife Tyra into long term care. She did come home from Sea Pines afterwards but it was clear that I could not provide the care she now needed. I made calls and toured several assisted living, rehab, and long term care facilities. The more I investigated, the more confused I got. A social worker from one of the in home PT providers suggested I may need an attorney. I checked many lawyer reviews from all over Central Florida before I called Rhodes Law. My first contact with Rhodes Law was by phone with Jackie McManus. I told her what was going on and she made me an appointment to see her right away. Tyra had to be admitted to Viera Del Mar within 30 days of being discharged from Sea Pines for Medicare coverage reasons. Talking to their admissions office left me with unanswered questions. With me in her office Jackie called Viera Del Mar. Jackie knew the people in admissions on a first name basis. Tyra was admitted on June 9th within a few days of the Medicare deadline. Next Jackie explained what was needed to protect Tyra's care and our estate if anything happened to either one of us. She laid out a timeline and a list of documents for Rhodes Law to do both of our Wills, Powers of Attorney, Living Wills, Healthcare Surrogate and Hippa Release Authorizations, Declarations for Naming Pre-Need Guardians, and a Revocable Trust! Jackie kept me up to speed on what she still might need from me with the looming August 31st, papers, assets and bank accounts sorted, deadline approaching. On September 1st everything was in place so Tyra's care was covered and everything that we had worked for was protected. This review turned out to be a lot longer than I expected it would be. It shows how unprepared my wife and I were. We had POAs and Wills from a "state specific" legal forms website. For years I had been her caregiver. Before retiring Tyra had had her full charge bookkeeping business. We thought that we knew what we were doing. We figured we were in good shape in case anything were to happen. The work that Rhodes Law provided showed how unprepared we had been. Tyra passed peacefully on October 6th surrounded by 7 of her 8 children, 7 of her 10 grand kids, and her great granddaughter. A month or so after Tyra's death Jackie got in touch to let me know paperwork Rhodes Law prepared to reapply for our homestead exemption was ready to be picked up. It had to be done before a March 2024 deadline or we would lose the exemption for the year. I had no clue this was necessary. Thank God I called Rhodes Law in May 2023.

My case was extremely complicated. The family dynamics were difficult at best. My family wanted to take away my mothers decision to have me be her POA. I felt ambushed by the family and previous illegal/unethical activities that had taken place prior to my arrival at Rhodes Law Firm. I was trying my best to take care of my elderly mother who has recently passed. Upon retaining Rhodes Law Firm the team, led by Attorney Rhodes, the firm quickly dismantled and corrected errors in accusations by family and helped right the wrongs done to my elderly mother. We even had to go to trial twice for false allegations and one was an emergency hearing. Attorney Rhodes helped me win both cases and genuinely cared about the welfare of my mother and myself I always felt that Attorney Rhodes took a personal interest in my case. She worked long hours over holidays to prepare for trial. She literally worked the entire weekend of the New Year. She has tirelessly worked weekends to make sure that everything was kept in the order that my mother would have liked. No matter what situation arises I know that I can reach out to Attorney Rhodes and her Law Firm for guidance and direction in a timely manner. Although she is usually three steps ahead of me and sees actions that need addressing before myself, including interfacing with other types of attorneys to protect my mother’s estate. Her guidance here has been invaluable. I often reached out to attorney Rhodes after hours and usually received an immediate response back. She was not just an attorney for me, she became a confidant, a friend, and advisor. I trusted her with my mothers welfare and she did not fail me. I can’t thank her and her staff enough nor imagine having to go through what I went through without the support of Attorney Rhodes and her firm. Many many thanks to all of you.

I hired Mrs. Chapman for a highly contested enforcement matter. I thought I had no options to make my Ex comply with our Final Judgment, with her help, understanding, and patience, I was able to enforce my judgment and receive the relief I was entitled too!!! I would highly recommend her to any person needing the help of a lawyer. She spent the time I needed to prepare not only the case but myself for each hearing.

The entire staff at Max Factor were always very welcoming and made me feel comfortable from the very first time I visited their office. Mr. Factor explained everything and ensured I was aware of what to expect every step of the way. I don’t believe I could find another lawyer who is more level headed, logical, and able to be my champion through the divorce I was unfortunate enough to go through. If you want an honest, trustworthy, and well connected lawyer to represent you in a divorce, look no further than Max Factor Law.

I wish I could adequately articulate how grateful I am that Ryan was recommended to my husband and me. From the very first consultation, he very patiently listened to understand and then asked clarifying questions to make sure he understood. Then, after giving us the legal information we needed, he asked us questions to make sure we understood. When we came back to sign papers, he again spent time with us that had not been on his schedule. He truly puts his clients first. We still have more to do, but I will only go to Ryan to have the work done. One thing that was so important was that he warned us that after filing our document we might get "official" looking mail indicating that there were more fees to be paid. This indeed happened and we could comfortably shred them and throw them away. If he had not done this, we could have been scammed into paying money we did not need to pay. I am so grateful that he made sure to warn us. I have such respect, trust, and high regard for Ryan Doddridge and recommend him without reservations.

What an Elder Law Lawyer Can Do for You

An elder law lawyer specializes in legal issues that affect older adults, their families, and caregivers. These lawyers handle a broad range of topics, including estate planning, Medicaid and Medicare, long-term care planning, guardianship, elder abuse, and retirement planning. The goal of an elder law lawyer is to protect the rights, finances, and well-being of elderly individuals and to help them plan for future healthcare and financial security.

If you or a loved one is aging and facing challenges related to healthcare, finances, or legal matters, an elder law lawyer can provide essential guidance to protect your rights and interests as you age.

When Should I Hire an Elder Law Lawyer?

Hiring an elder law lawyer can be beneficial in many situations where older adults need help with legal, financial, or healthcare-related decisions. Common reasons to hire an elder law lawyer include:

  • Estate planning: If you want to create or update a will, set up trusts, or ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes, an elder law lawyer can help with comprehensive estate planning.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: If you need help qualifying for Medicaid to cover long-term care or need advice on navigating Medicare benefits, a lawyer can guide you through the application process and protect your assets.
  • Long-term care planning: If you’re concerned about paying for nursing home care or assisted living, a lawyer can help you create a financial plan and explore options for government assistance.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If a family member is unable to make decisions due to age-related cognitive issues, an elder law lawyer can assist in setting up legal guardianship or conservatorship to ensure their care.
  • Elder abuse and exploitation: If you or a loved one is experiencing physical, emotional, or financial abuse, an elder law lawyer can help you take legal action to stop the abuse and recover damages.
  • Retirement planning: Elder law lawyers can assist with planning for retirement, including managing pensions, Social Security, and other retirement income.
  • Special needs planning: If you have a disabled family member who requires special care, an elder law lawyer can help create trusts or other legal arrangements to ensure their long-term financial and healthcare needs are met.

What Does an Elder Law Lawyer Do?

An elder law lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help older adults and their families navigate the complexities of aging, healthcare, and estate planning. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Drafting wills and trusts: Creating legal documents that outline how an individual’s assets will be distributed after death, ensuring that their wishes are honored.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: Helping clients protect their assets while qualifying for government benefits to cover healthcare and long-term care costs.
  • Establishing guardianships: Assisting families in setting up guardianship or conservatorship for loved ones who are unable to make decisions due to mental or physical incapacity.
  • Protecting against elder abuse: Investigating claims of elder abuse or financial exploitation and representing the victim in legal actions to stop the abuse and seek compensation.
  • Planning for long-term care: Developing strategies to cover the costs of nursing homes, assisted living, and other long-term care options without exhausting the elder’s financial resources.
  • Managing probate and estate administration: Guiding families through the probate process to ensure that the decedent’s assets are distributed according to the law and their wishes.
  • Setting up advance directives: Helping clients establish healthcare directives and powers of attorney to ensure their medical and financial decisions are carried out if they become incapacitated.

How Are Elder Law Lawyers Paid?

Elder law lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many elder law lawyers charge by the hour, especially for tasks such as drafting documents, handling legal disputes, or providing ongoing legal advice. Hourly rates typically range from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as drafting a will or setting up a trust, some lawyers charge a flat fee. This can range from $500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the estate plan.
  • Retainer: For long-term legal representation, such as managing a trust or handling guardianship matters, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal work.
  • Contingency fee: In some elder abuse or financial exploitation cases, a lawyer may work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they recover compensation for the client. This fee is typically a percentage of the settlement or damages awarded.

Be sure to discuss fees with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how you will be billed and what the total cost of services might be.

How Much Does an Elder Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an elder law lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estate planning: Drafting basic documents, such as a will or power of attorney, may cost between $500 and $2,000, depending on the complexity of the client’s assets and wishes.
  • Complex estate planning: Setting up more advanced estate plans, such as revocable or irrevocable trusts, Medicaid planning, or special needs trusts, can range from $2,000 to $10,000 or more.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: Legal fees for setting up guardianship or conservatorship often range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and whether disputes arise.
  • Medicaid planning: Legal fees for Medicaid planning can range from $1,500 to $10,000, depending on the level of asset protection needed and the complexity of the individual’s financial situation.

Always ask for an estimate of fees during your initial consultation to ensure you understand how much the legal services will cost.

Top Questions to Ask an Elder Law Lawyer

Before hiring an elder law lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise needed to handle your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with elder law cases?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's estate planning, Medicaid applications, or elder abuse claims.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the best approach for my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your situation and what legal strategies the lawyer recommends.
  4. How long will the process take?
Whether it’s drafting an estate plan or setting up a guardianship, ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to take.
  5. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of the case. Make sure you know who will be working on your case directly.
  6. What documents should I bring to the consultation?
Ask the lawyer what documentation or information you should prepare for your consultation, such as medical records, financial statements, or prior legal documents.

How to Check the Credibility of an Elder Law Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable elder law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for elder law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in elder law and have experience with cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on elder law issues.
  • Check for certifications: Look for certifications or affiliations with organizations such as the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), which can indicate the lawyer’s dedication to elder law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with an elder law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Existing estate planning documents: If you have a will, trust, or power of attorney in place, bring copies for the lawyer to review.
  • Financial records: Provide details of your assets, including bank accounts, investments, real estate, and retirement accounts, as well as any debts.
  • Medical information: If the case involves guardianship or Medicaid planning, bring relevant medical records that detail the individual's health condition and care needs.
  • Insurance policies: Bring information about health insurance, long-term care insurance, and any other relevant policies.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about your legal needs, the process, and the lawyer’s fees.
  • List of family members or beneficiaries: Prepare a list of the individuals you want to include in your estate plan or who will be affected by the legal process.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and receive the best legal advice tailored to your needs.
