Jan Baililes assisted me with an estate family case about 3 yrs ago. She handled the closing of my familys homestead by helping me with all matters which occasionally deterred from the main issues with patience, understanding and detailed final accounting. She is by far a genuine, kind, concerned attorney with no doubt at all will finish her job with you leaving you more than satisfied. I continue to use Mrs. BAILILES in all my legal issues that may arise. I wholeheartedly recommend her work to anyone that is in need of the services she provide without any reservations. I wish her well will long success.

I contacted Jim Hart about trademarking my business name after seeing an excellent video that he'd posted on YouTube on that subject. I was impressed by his communication style about the process, and the way he honestly managed my expectations on timing and potential obstacles. He and his staff kept me informed at each step. I'd wholeheartedly recommend working with this firm for trademarking and business law matters.

Let me start by saying…I know all lawyers lie. John Green and his legal team LIE directly TO THEIR CLIENTS about the very thing they said they were going to do and what they WERE PAID to do. We expected them to do their (simple) job and they failed miserably. We spoke to John Green 3 days after our incident occurred. We made it clear in the meeting that we wanted to subpoena video surveillance footage from the establishment at which the incident occurred. John said he could do that, wrote it down in his intake notes, and named his price. He was paid the next day, with us knowing surveillance footage has a time limit and we needed it ASAP. Big mistake. Over the next 3 months we dealt with POOR COMMUNICATION. And I mean POOR. We are from out of state and phone was obviously our whole means of communication. John was never available to talk. If you enjoy calling someone (that you hired) multiple times a day, multiple days in a row without getting a phone call back, then this firm is for you. TERRIBLE. We were LIED TO on several occasions. “The subpoena was sent and hopefully we’ll have the footage in a few days”. The subpoena was never sent and we continued to be LIED TO. Fast forward to January (original date was in the beginning of November). After multiple continuances in court (because we were expecting John to do the job he was paid to do and to actually obtain the footage we requested) the DA stated they also wanted to see the footage. Only then did John Green and his team make an effort to drive down the street to the establishment and serve them. By this point the establishment said the footage erases and they could not produce. Now, if John had done what he said he was going to do in the beginning, and in a timely fashion this would not be the case. A complete LACK OF EFFORT from John Green and quite honestly the entire thing felt like a set up as he kept saying “I don’t think it’s going to change anything in your case”. I don’t care what you think…do what you were paid to do. There is no excuse for the LACK OF EFFORT John Green and his legal team put into this case. 0 out of 10. ABSOLUTELY WOULD NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE to trust these RATS with your legal issues. Spend your money elsewhere on a lawyer who actually cares.

I had my will and trust redone in 2021 with Chris Craig. This experience was adequate. But when I wanted to make some fairly basic changes (changing beneficiaries) to the will/trust this year in 2024, Chris wanted to charge me more than the initial set up of my will and trust (thousands of dollars to make edits to the will and trust that would have taken me an hour if only it was legal for me to edit the documents in Word). When I questioned such exorbitant charges for such simple revisions he fired me as a client. Now I'm stuck with a will/trust that does not reflect my wishes. I'm shopping for a new attorney who I can trust not to extort me for simple changes.

Unfortunately I did not get to meet Chris…I was to have a meeting via zoom with an elderly friend that was in dire need of a Will. We were to meet Chris to discuss our needs. However, the form I had been emailed was asking for intense info that would have taken me several days to obtain. To paraphrase, I obviously was not refunded 250.00 but didn’t get to have consultation either. Most definitely was not impressed with Paralegal…very defensive attitude!

One of Greensboro's best attorneys! Eric took the time to thoroughly explain every aspect of the process, ensuring that I was confident and well-informed every step of the way. His attention to detail and ability to anticipate potential challenges gave me peace of mind. What truly sets Eric apart is his caring demeanor. He goes above and beyond to make his clients feel valued and understood. It’s rare to find someone so skilled who is also incredibly approachable and compassionate. If you’re looking for a knowledgeable, professional, and caring attorney, Eric Richardson is the one you want in your corner. Highly recommended!

Patterson Harkavy LLP claims to handle employment matters for employees, but my experience was completely the opposite. They turned me away without even bothering to do an intake to review my claim. When I tried to follow up by phone, no one ever answered. If you're dealing with legal issues, I wouldn't recommend reaching out to them—they're unresponsive, and it's clear that employment matters are not their priority. Very disappointing.

Attorney Richardson is frank, direct and goes straight to business. Something that I respect is just that. When his words to me is “What do you want to do?” That was my first sign to me he means business. Here I was thinking I’m going to meet his paralegal. Absolutely was not the case. I found myself in a room sitting in front of the attorney himself. After offering us coffee (my wife and I) the attorney went right into my case. He listens, processes all that you tell him about your case and then executes what is best for you. After our first meeting (same day) it didn’t take an hour before he had us sitting once again in his office gathering more information about my case. PHENOMENAL experience and exactly what I need. Someone who actually cares and has a personal relationship with his client.

This law office is completely unequipped to handle modern employment law cases. The attorney was shockingly uneducated on clear-cut workplace retaliation, ADA violations, HIPAA privacy breaches, and discrimination law. Instead of recognizing textbook legal violations, he was dismissive, condescending, and gaslighting—forcing me to explain basic legal concepts, only to victim shame me for staying in a job where I was financially and medically trapped. Rather than advocating for employee rights, he made me justify my own case, despite having prepared over 500 pages of documentation and proof of clear violations, retaliation, and systemic discrimination—questioning clear ADA noncompliance and disability discrimination. I even had to explicitly explain how multiple diagnoses and conditions are legally protected, and he still failed to recognize obvious retaliation. He clearly does not understand modern workplace environments or employment law beyond the most basic level. On top of that, I was financially and physically displaced due to a Hurricane Helene, another concept that didn’t warrant even the slightest bit of compassion or understanding from him. I came in for a consultation prepared to pay $400 for solid legal advice but ended up wasting my time repeating myself, trying to explain the nature of modern remote work environments, cloud computing, and corporate tech consulting. He should have paid me for educating him on these concepts—even though I doubt he remembered anything that was discussed after I left the room. If you are looking for a lawyer who is compassionate, understands nuance, and is actually familiar with employment law from this century, look elsewhere. You should not have to repeat yourself multiple times, be further gaslit, or feel more exhausted after a legal consultation than you did before it. The lack of competence extends beyond legal matters. If you expect a law office that at least knows how to update their own Google business listing, provide clear office directions, or even put up a sign so clients can find them, you’ll be disappointed there too. If they can’t even manage basic business operations, how can they be trusted with a complex legal case? Do not waste your time.

Very poor communication. I am the trustee of my parents’ estate and my emails routinely go unanswered, even when I specifically state that the issue is time sensitive. My siblings and all live out of state. We hired Mr. McIntyre and it has been a nightmare. When we asked questions he refused to answer. He would not tell us what the estate was paying for anything. When we asked he would say he would tell us when the estate was settled. Mr. McIntyre had an auction and sold antique clocks that an appraiser had appraised for over $20,000 for less than half of the appraised value. Charged his 5% on not just the value of the estate , but on the disbursements also - adding $10,000 to what he was paid. Guard your family and avoid this office.

Nice person. However, fails to respond to emails, calls to the hired office service are frequently unanswered, fails to advise of any updates in case. (Appears to lack appropriate office support staff). Due to multiple informational mistakes, it has been necessary to preview her work prior to documents being forwarded. According to the contract I signed with her, I have never received even one invoice as promised. I do not feel confident given her disorganization, high fees, or her lack of accomplishment/interest with my case. I regret hiring her and do not recommend this attorney.

I retained the services of Jim Siemens for my divorce and was elated when I discovered his associate Ana M. Prendergast specializes in Geriatric Law and Estate Planning. Geriatric Attorneys are inordinately difficult to find. Ana eased the exhaustion and frustration I was experiencing in being the Healthcare and Durable POA for an overwhelming, elderly parent. Ana improved the quality of my life and my elderly parent’s life by synthesizing empathy, critical thinking and uncanny listening skills with efficiency, resulting in both short and long-term actionable results. Ana M. Prendergast is also my Estate Attorney and conducts this with expediency. Often during divorce we are unable to focus on “next steps” and Ana helped me realize the importance of estate planning, especially as a single mother. I referred her to other friends who were equally satisfied with her gift in channeling family needs into well-conceived, solid estate planning. A quantitative assessment of 5 stars does not do Ana justice; numerically rating her professional and personal qualities is impossible for me because she exceeded and continues to exceed my expectations. Without reservation, I recommend Ana M. Prendergast and The Siemen’s Family Law Group for any family law related legal needs you may have. They are unquestionably the best family law practice in Asheville. Caroline Asheville, North Carolina

We consulted Mr. Alexander on the matter of a Special Needs Trust for adult son as well as all matters involved in planning our estate. Our initial conversation, because of COVID restrictions, took place over ZOOM. In spite of the "impersonal" nature of interaction, we felt very comfortable with Mr. Alexander's recommendations, explanations and advice. Our situation is not extraordinary; many middle-aged parents have adult children who require a Special Needs Trust. Mr. Alexander and his staff made us feel that our situation was deserving of personal attention. Through every step of the process, we have felt that our needs, input and our son's situation were being taken into consideration by every staff member we encountered. In circumstances such as ours, our son's interests are a priority. It is always a concern, when meeting someone new, whether he will feel comfortable and relaxed, especially if there will be a prolonged interaction. Mr. Alexander and his staff provided us with a very easy atmosphere in which, in spite of the importance of the proceedings, there was no tension that could cause our son any discomfort. The demeanor of everyone in the office is professional and kind, respectful and welcoming. The documents prepared for us were very thorough and, in spite of the legal language required, were easy to understand because Mr. Alexander and Ms. Truelove made sure that every question we might raise was answered clearly and concisely. We are very, very happy with our experience. We highly recommend W.G. Alexander and Associates. They made what had seemed a rather ponderous item from our "task list" so very easy! We are very grateful for the wonderful service and excellent guidance we received, and for the fantastic environment in which we conducted our business because it helped our son greatly to be surrounded by kind, compassionate, knowledgeable professionals who work with accuracy and expediency to make things easier for all of us. Kudos!

Bill and his staff not only helped my mom get approved for Medicaid, but also helped us handle her Will and set up a Trust for my disabled brother. Extremely professional and thorough attention to every possible detail. We couldn't have made a wiser choice, and highly recommend him to everyone we know.

I can highly recommend Attorney Alexander. He prepared my mother’s estate planning and health care documents and explained effect of each. Little did we know that she would pass two years later. He handled death and trust related filings and made it easy during a very difficult time of grief . We also used him to create our own trusts and wills etc and family trust . His fees are reasonable and service complete. Digital and hard copies and binder with instructions are also provided. I have made several referrals to friends and neighbors who too have been very satisfied.

I was recommended to James Hogan to help settle an estate. He refused to do his job and basically had given up when he didn’t get a response from a company. Didn’t bother contacting me for a year, even though I contacted him multiple times. He’s lazy, arrogant, and not worth you’re time or money.

We have worked with Mr. Price almost three years on one issue. The excuses we have received from being overwelmed with estate planning to handling dispositions on other cases. After he has been paid the customer is no longer needed. All we requested is communication since we live eight hours away. In the almost three years only twice has Mr. Price reached out to us. Once because he claimed he could not find a deed and the other when he wanted to advise us that the house would be auctioned in the upcoming months. Mutiple times he has not returned phone calls and he said it was because we were trying to change the course of action that we agreed upon. I teuly believe that he either have up mixed up with another client or is over his head with our case. Three years is a long time and he has been forgetful on a lot of issues. When he made the choice to drop us as clients for asking to many question I asked for our records to be returned. His response was I will make them available for pickup. Knowing we dont live near jos office Im positive he has not done enoug work with our case that there should be enough money to allow him to mail these files.

They let you believe that you have a case until they get you into the office and take your $200 counsel fee, then they basically try to extort you even further, just to get them to even attempt to do the right thing. They knew they weren’t going to help me from the very beginning, but that didn’t stop them from taking my money and wasting my time. They would have taken more, and wasted even more of my time, had I let them. Justice isn’t real and these lawyers aren’t here to help you, or to bring light to any truth. They will protect the liars, criminals and the system for their wrong doings.

I was referred to Mr. Bland from a local attorney to represent me in a civil action against a government official and municipality. Mr. Bland reviewed all of my documentation and provided the options regarding that action. He took the case and began to craft the suit accordingly. After putting the future plaintiffs on notice, the municipality took immediate action against the official. After evaluating the swift response from the municipality, I decided not to pursue further redress of grievance. If you are looking for a no-nonsense attorney, that knows the law through and through Mr. Bland is your guy. He was thorough, thoughtful, prompt, stern, and produced immediate results. This is why I am able to highly recommend him!!

What an Elder Law Lawyer Can Do for You

An elder law lawyer specializes in legal issues that affect older adults, their families, and caregivers. These lawyers handle a broad range of topics, including estate planning, Medicaid and Medicare, long-term care planning, guardianship, elder abuse, and retirement planning. The goal of an elder law lawyer is to protect the rights, finances, and well-being of elderly individuals and to help them plan for future healthcare and financial security.

If you or a loved one is aging and facing challenges related to healthcare, finances, or legal matters, an elder law lawyer can provide essential guidance to protect your rights and interests as you age.

When Should I Hire an Elder Law Lawyer?

Hiring an elder law lawyer can be beneficial in many situations where older adults need help with legal, financial, or healthcare-related decisions. Common reasons to hire an elder law lawyer include:

  • Estate planning: If you want to create or update a will, set up trusts, or ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes, an elder law lawyer can help with comprehensive estate planning.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: If you need help qualifying for Medicaid to cover long-term care or need advice on navigating Medicare benefits, a lawyer can guide you through the application process and protect your assets.
  • Long-term care planning: If you’re concerned about paying for nursing home care or assisted living, a lawyer can help you create a financial plan and explore options for government assistance.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If a family member is unable to make decisions due to age-related cognitive issues, an elder law lawyer can assist in setting up legal guardianship or conservatorship to ensure their care.
  • Elder abuse and exploitation: If you or a loved one is experiencing physical, emotional, or financial abuse, an elder law lawyer can help you take legal action to stop the abuse and recover damages.
  • Retirement planning: Elder law lawyers can assist with planning for retirement, including managing pensions, Social Security, and other retirement income.
  • Special needs planning: If you have a disabled family member who requires special care, an elder law lawyer can help create trusts or other legal arrangements to ensure their long-term financial and healthcare needs are met.

What Does an Elder Law Lawyer Do?

An elder law lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help older adults and their families navigate the complexities of aging, healthcare, and estate planning. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Drafting wills and trusts: Creating legal documents that outline how an individual’s assets will be distributed after death, ensuring that their wishes are honored.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: Helping clients protect their assets while qualifying for government benefits to cover healthcare and long-term care costs.
  • Establishing guardianships: Assisting families in setting up guardianship or conservatorship for loved ones who are unable to make decisions due to mental or physical incapacity.
  • Protecting against elder abuse: Investigating claims of elder abuse or financial exploitation and representing the victim in legal actions to stop the abuse and seek compensation.
  • Planning for long-term care: Developing strategies to cover the costs of nursing homes, assisted living, and other long-term care options without exhausting the elder’s financial resources.
  • Managing probate and estate administration: Guiding families through the probate process to ensure that the decedent’s assets are distributed according to the law and their wishes.
  • Setting up advance directives: Helping clients establish healthcare directives and powers of attorney to ensure their medical and financial decisions are carried out if they become incapacitated.

How Are Elder Law Lawyers Paid?

Elder law lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many elder law lawyers charge by the hour, especially for tasks such as drafting documents, handling legal disputes, or providing ongoing legal advice. Hourly rates typically range from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as drafting a will or setting up a trust, some lawyers charge a flat fee. This can range from $500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the estate plan.
  • Retainer: For long-term legal representation, such as managing a trust or handling guardianship matters, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal work.
  • Contingency fee: In some elder abuse or financial exploitation cases, a lawyer may work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they recover compensation for the client. This fee is typically a percentage of the settlement or damages awarded.

Be sure to discuss fees with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how you will be billed and what the total cost of services might be.

How Much Does an Elder Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an elder law lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estate planning: Drafting basic documents, such as a will or power of attorney, may cost between $500 and $2,000, depending on the complexity of the client’s assets and wishes.
  • Complex estate planning: Setting up more advanced estate plans, such as revocable or irrevocable trusts, Medicaid planning, or special needs trusts, can range from $2,000 to $10,000 or more.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: Legal fees for setting up guardianship or conservatorship often range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and whether disputes arise.
  • Medicaid planning: Legal fees for Medicaid planning can range from $1,500 to $10,000, depending on the level of asset protection needed and the complexity of the individual’s financial situation.

Always ask for an estimate of fees during your initial consultation to ensure you understand how much the legal services will cost.

Top Questions to Ask an Elder Law Lawyer

Before hiring an elder law lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise needed to handle your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with elder law cases?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's estate planning, Medicaid applications, or elder abuse claims.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the best approach for my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your situation and what legal strategies the lawyer recommends.
  4. How long will the process take?
Whether it’s drafting an estate plan or setting up a guardianship, ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to take.
  5. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of the case. Make sure you know who will be working on your case directly.
  6. What documents should I bring to the consultation?
Ask the lawyer what documentation or information you should prepare for your consultation, such as medical records, financial statements, or prior legal documents.

How to Check the Credibility of an Elder Law Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable elder law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for elder law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in elder law and have experience with cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on elder law issues.
  • Check for certifications: Look for certifications or affiliations with organizations such as the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), which can indicate the lawyer’s dedication to elder law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with an elder law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Existing estate planning documents: If you have a will, trust, or power of attorney in place, bring copies for the lawyer to review.
  • Financial records: Provide details of your assets, including bank accounts, investments, real estate, and retirement accounts, as well as any debts.
  • Medical information: If the case involves guardianship or Medicaid planning, bring relevant medical records that detail the individual's health condition and care needs.
  • Insurance policies: Bring information about health insurance, long-term care insurance, and any other relevant policies.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about your legal needs, the process, and the lawyer’s fees.
  • List of family members or beneficiaries: Prepare a list of the individuals you want to include in your estate plan or who will be affected by the legal process.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and receive the best legal advice tailored to your needs.
