If I wasn't forced to give him 1 star I would choice to give him negative 5 as he surely didn't deserve any points as he handled my sons case awful a 2 yr old could have performed better. He should seek a better education or a different career.

UNPROFESSIONAL, RUDE & WRONGFULLY ADVISE CLIENTS. I am working on mediating agreements w/my spouse. They are rude & putting FALSE IDEAS into my spouse's head!!! Telling her I am going to manipulate her!! How DARE THEY?! They won't even speak to me as pro se. My souse has been wrongly advised also to: 1) SLANDER ME 2) GET AN EVICTION ON MY RECORD 3) Allow my spouse to steal my driver license, CCS, money & remove 20K in credit from my name and MORE!

Will Miller worked tiredness with me over several months, through the flu and a severe case of bronchitis, with a side of pneumonia. We had started the process and he checked on my often and after rescheduling, he did a fabulous job of redoing my will and health care power. He takes all the time you need to fully understand every part of each page, while a bright smile on his face and no judgment, most likely a laugh, as laughed a ton at my ignorance, yet he never allowed me to feel that way for very long! Knowing he is also criminal attorney, I was thrilled, just in case...haha He & his staff are all amazing and truly deserve 10 stars!

’ve had very highly complex cases with my ex that has spanned over 14 years. Bill was always one step ahead of him. I briefly hired another attorney closer to my home when I moved out of Charlotte and they did not compare to Bill. I had to fire that attorney and go back to Bill to feel comfortable my case was getting handled from all aspects. Bill was referred to me by a DSS (child protective) social worker and said if I need an attorney that will not leave a stone unturned, you need bill whittaker. I am so thankful I found him. Being married to the type of person I was married to, I have dealt with many attorneys in several states….I know a good one!!!!

Vicki is the best attorney I have ever worked with. I would give her 100 stars if that were an option. She treats her cases with the most care and concern that any client could hope for. I currently have full custody of my son because of her tremendous work and professional dedication. She is beyond fair on what she charges which is another added bonus. I very seldom leave reviews but hiring her has been life changing for my family. I feel so blessed that I picked up the phone and called her. If you want the best of everything, she is the Attorney you will want representing you.

Heidi Stewart promised to help with an issue with my dad. It was time sensitive. She saw him once and talked to him one other time. On Friday she said she would see him Saturday. On Saturday she said she couldn’t see him because she needed to spend time with her family. She agreed to see him Sunday morning at 11:00 and then texted my wife (in another state) an hour before the appointment saying she couldn’t come and to call her next week. Today, Monday, she sent an e-mail saying her schedule would not allow her to see him and to find someone else. This is NOT the way to conduct business, especially with a lot on the line. I would never recommend someone with such a poor business ethic. I had paid her for the time she invested and was more than willing to pay for the rest had she done so

Terrible experience. The firm over billed and under delivered. Attempted to resolve the repeated issues with them multiple times but they could careless. They are more focused on over billing than they are on their "clients." In all fairness, I only worked with a few of their attorneys before I cut ties. This law firm is inhumane, heartless and deplorable. I called them a week and a half ago. The answering service says they will call back in 48 hours. No one responded. I called back to see if I could get 3 more days until I was paid to clear a balance because I HAD TO HELP BURY MY GRANDDAUGHTER and it took all of my money previous to this date ($5000 contribution ). I had mailed them payments which they did receive. I was told no. I could have provided proof if asked. Death comes to all of us at some point or another; I guess they are exempt. I feel my reason was valid for a little grace; I only asked for 3 days. Non the less I hope they never experience the loss I did. I will add that just within an hour of my first phone call the above post I received a phone call from the firm. I spoke with a young lady name C.J. She went over my account with me. She was professional, and very empathetic. In summary positive results!! Thank you so much for representing the firm in a more positive light. C.J definitely earned them 5 stars.

I hired Mr. Frank’s firm to assist me with a parent’s estate. Firm claimed I had no authorization to become POA, and that I’d need to find a Gurdian for the estate. Firm went on to tell me the court would not deem me an appropriate fit to be the Guardian of the estate for my own parent, and claimed we would have to have Mr. Frank become Guardian of the estate for a yearly fee. I went to a different attorney who quickly saw that I did in fact have the needed paperwork to become POA. Mr. Frank’s firm then refused to release my own paperwork back to me for three weeks and transferred all my calls directly to voicemail (unless I called from a different number they didn’t have on file), and failed to return calls.

I liked the attorney, so I hate it didn't work out. I sought representation for an estate/Medicaid issue for my mom. He seemed knowledgeable and offered several suggestions. He gave me an Employment Agreement, which I took with me with the intent to sign and return. I emailed the next day and he didn't respond. I tried several more times, and he finally replied. I told him I wanted to move forward with one of the options. He stated his spouse was a realtor and she could assist. She called the next day and we spoke and all seemed ok. They have since dropped off the radar. I emailed numerous times to 3 different email addresses I found for them, and called and left messages. I even stated that if they didn't want to continue, please let me know. This was a time-sensitive issue. They wasted about 3 months of my time. My time has run out, and now my mom may lose her Medicaid.

Mr. Schrum's expertise - navigating the legal and financial complexities caused by Disability, Special Needs, Alzheimer's, and Long Term Care - turned out not to be the exact area of my needs. Mr. Schrum readily and graciously took time out of his busy day, looked up an attorney who is a Certified Elder Law Attorney and shared that attorney's name and contact information with me. I cannot thank Mr. Schrum enough for the care he showed me during our consultation, by helping determine the specifics of my needs in order to refer someone. I was referred to Lisa by another attorney, so I was remiss in doing my normal research before calling her office. To say that I was disappointed in the lack of follow-through, preparation and skill of our case is a sore understatement. During the initial meeting with Lisa, she advised that she would pull a copy of the paperwork later that morning when she went to the courthouse. 4 days later, in the courtroom. AFTER the case had started, I found out that Lisa had not even read the case notes, knew nothing about what she was going to say to the judge and was bordering on the edge of incompetence in our case. I will never recommend or use her services again. Lesson learned on due diligence when so much is at stake.

My husband And I Hired Keith to assist with a child custody case. From the beginning I was NOT very confident in his services. But he assured both my husband and I that this was a “slam dunk” case. He was very inconsistent. He never called and updated us with progress along the case. We had to continue to call him. Everytime we would call he would say “I was just about to call you!” There would be months in between communication. We tried to be understanding with COVID since he told us that the courts were backed up during that time but something didn’t seem right since were getting other legal issues taken care of so we called the courts about this case ourselves. He had never sent the courts information regarding the other parent being filed THEY WERE NEVER FILED, in fact the case had been closed! Then when he was confronted about it he blames the sheriffs office. He also stated that he “THOUGHT” she was filed but he was looking at the incorrect information on the sheriffs website. Even if it was an error on their part - he never checked in on this case. He allowed this case to sit and sit and they closed it! He lied about everything. 1000.00 of our money that he refuses to refund. We waited a year and my husband still has no contact with his son. We have secured another attorney but guys just want you all to be careful with this one.

I'm shocked to see a one star review. I've used Atty. Crosswhite to handle the affairs of both my parents -- finances, VA Aid & Attendance, Medicaid planning, banking, etc. -- and found him to be nothing less than empathetic and caring. I should add that, at the request of a geographically (and emotionally distant) brother, I've since consulted with another estate planning attorney, one that gave me nothing more than boilerplate advise at a very high price. Atty. Crosswhite, in contrast, cut to the chase and gave me both the advice I needed and a map with which to proceed. So why the 'prep work' in the title of this review? Because you really need to take some responsibility and get your affairs in order BEFORE a consultation: finances, bank statements, insurance...all of it. The more you collect ahead of time, the more productive will be your interaction.

I wish I could give zero stars. I was waiting outside Mr. Rossi's office for my fiance to join us for a meeting. This man came barreling over, knocked into me, and then blamed me for it even though he spilled his coffee all over me. He told me that he was a powerful lawyer and that I shouldn't cross him. I was shaken by how completely mean he was. My fiance arrived a bit later and helped me clean up. Then we went up to meet Mr. Rossi -- turns out he was the mean man! My fiancé received a speeding ticket while driving through Alamance county. I contacted multiple attorneys inquiring about costs for representation. Mr. Rossi's office was the last of 5 attorneys. My first impression was a lasting one. Being able to speak to him directly made the experience personable. Additionally, he is relatable and a great communicator. His price was not only affordable, but it was the best quote that I'd received, especially considering my initial contact was a week prior to the court date. He responded swiftly to emails and voice messages. He was very detailed and explained everything thoroughly. I received an email from him regarding the outcome of the case as soon as he left court. We saved money hiring him. Additionally, he fought for our best interest getting the ticket reduced to a faulty speedometer violation. No insurance or license points!!! Just court costs. I highly recommend his services!!!

I would not recommend you use this law office unless they are offering to do the work for free, and even then I would carefully consider them. They did work for me in September of 2022 for a refinance. Almost 2 years later on Monday August 26th, 2024 I received a phone call stating they had a check for me for over $1400. When I asked what it was for they told me when they did the refi they took out for insurance but then found out it had already been paid out of escrow so they needed to refund me the money. Two years later they realized lol. Wow. They wanted to confirm my address which they did. I live about 3 miles from their office so one week later when I still didn’t have the money they were mailing I called and left a message. The check was still there lol. I guess they figured that 2 years was not enough and I needed to wait longer. When I picked up the check I asked what is going on down there, why did this take so long? I got a deer in the headlights look from the nice lady at the front who said she would pass along my dissatisfaction. Since no one can give me a reason for this I am going to go out on a limb and call it incompetence. That is something you don’t want from someone representing your interests in any legal matters. So do yourself a favor. Do not use this incompetent law firm. I am lucky they ever figured it out at all and that I ever got the money back.

In line with the other comments, I hired Mrs. Phillips a few years ago and was very uncomfortable with her representation. It felt as though she was not fighting for me but for the other side. I would recommend hiring anyone other than David Silver to handle an estate/probate. Apparently, this is his specialty, but we found him to be non-responsive, insulting and incompetent. After many frustrating months of dealing with him (two weeks while he was on vacation), we have had to extend probable for another 3 months because of his lack of follow-up for the notice of death in the newspaper. The important items that we actually needed him to take care of were never done and the things that he did do were grossly overcharged. Now, at the time when we actually needed him to work and close out the estate, he has "fired" us and left us without an attorney. During this difficult time, we were hoping for someone we could rely on and handle things for us, and instead we have been left frustrated, angry and disappointed and in a worse position than we were in nearly 5 month ago.

My spouse and I were recommend to Margaret and so did not shopping in advance. We met with her to discuss our estate planning needs. We payed a substantial retainer, far more than what her page here indicates. Then, we waited, and waited, and waited. There were interim e-mail exchanges but the more we had the more it seemed she had forgotten what we spoke about. We eventually pressed to get drafts of our documents and they were filled with glaring errors, things we had never asked for in the disbursement of our estates. These came with a request for more funds. We severed the relationship at that point, but found ourselves pressed to pay more fees. We countered that any more requests would result in our pursuing full refund of the money we had already paid.

Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience with this attorney, despite my being as gracious as a person can be with another person. I would not recommend due to extremely poor follow-through and an air of entitlement, in my opinion. Was made to feel like I was constantly chasing her down. Made a stressful situation only more stressful and wasted my valuable time. I guess she thinks hers is so much more important.

What an Elder Law Lawyer Can Do for You

An elder law lawyer specializes in legal issues that affect older adults, their families, and caregivers. These lawyers handle a broad range of topics, including estate planning, Medicaid and Medicare, long-term care planning, guardianship, elder abuse, and retirement planning. The goal of an elder law lawyer is to protect the rights, finances, and well-being of elderly individuals and to help them plan for future healthcare and financial security.

If you or a loved one is aging and facing challenges related to healthcare, finances, or legal matters, an elder law lawyer can provide essential guidance to protect your rights and interests as you age.

When Should I Hire an Elder Law Lawyer?

Hiring an elder law lawyer can be beneficial in many situations where older adults need help with legal, financial, or healthcare-related decisions. Common reasons to hire an elder law lawyer include:

  • Estate planning: If you want to create or update a will, set up trusts, or ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes, an elder law lawyer can help with comprehensive estate planning.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: If you need help qualifying for Medicaid to cover long-term care or need advice on navigating Medicare benefits, a lawyer can guide you through the application process and protect your assets.
  • Long-term care planning: If you’re concerned about paying for nursing home care or assisted living, a lawyer can help you create a financial plan and explore options for government assistance.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If a family member is unable to make decisions due to age-related cognitive issues, an elder law lawyer can assist in setting up legal guardianship or conservatorship to ensure their care.
  • Elder abuse and exploitation: If you or a loved one is experiencing physical, emotional, or financial abuse, an elder law lawyer can help you take legal action to stop the abuse and recover damages.
  • Retirement planning: Elder law lawyers can assist with planning for retirement, including managing pensions, Social Security, and other retirement income.
  • Special needs planning: If you have a disabled family member who requires special care, an elder law lawyer can help create trusts or other legal arrangements to ensure their long-term financial and healthcare needs are met.

What Does an Elder Law Lawyer Do?

An elder law lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help older adults and their families navigate the complexities of aging, healthcare, and estate planning. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Drafting wills and trusts: Creating legal documents that outline how an individual’s assets will be distributed after death, ensuring that their wishes are honored.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: Helping clients protect their assets while qualifying for government benefits to cover healthcare and long-term care costs.
  • Establishing guardianships: Assisting families in setting up guardianship or conservatorship for loved ones who are unable to make decisions due to mental or physical incapacity.
  • Protecting against elder abuse: Investigating claims of elder abuse or financial exploitation and representing the victim in legal actions to stop the abuse and seek compensation.
  • Planning for long-term care: Developing strategies to cover the costs of nursing homes, assisted living, and other long-term care options without exhausting the elder’s financial resources.
  • Managing probate and estate administration: Guiding families through the probate process to ensure that the decedent’s assets are distributed according to the law and their wishes.
  • Setting up advance directives: Helping clients establish healthcare directives and powers of attorney to ensure their medical and financial decisions are carried out if they become incapacitated.

How Are Elder Law Lawyers Paid?

Elder law lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many elder law lawyers charge by the hour, especially for tasks such as drafting documents, handling legal disputes, or providing ongoing legal advice. Hourly rates typically range from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as drafting a will or setting up a trust, some lawyers charge a flat fee. This can range from $500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the estate plan.
  • Retainer: For long-term legal representation, such as managing a trust or handling guardianship matters, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal work.
  • Contingency fee: In some elder abuse or financial exploitation cases, a lawyer may work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they recover compensation for the client. This fee is typically a percentage of the settlement or damages awarded.

Be sure to discuss fees with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how you will be billed and what the total cost of services might be.

How Much Does an Elder Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an elder law lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estate planning: Drafting basic documents, such as a will or power of attorney, may cost between $500 and $2,000, depending on the complexity of the client’s assets and wishes.
  • Complex estate planning: Setting up more advanced estate plans, such as revocable or irrevocable trusts, Medicaid planning, or special needs trusts, can range from $2,000 to $10,000 or more.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: Legal fees for setting up guardianship or conservatorship often range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and whether disputes arise.
  • Medicaid planning: Legal fees for Medicaid planning can range from $1,500 to $10,000, depending on the level of asset protection needed and the complexity of the individual’s financial situation.

Always ask for an estimate of fees during your initial consultation to ensure you understand how much the legal services will cost.

Top Questions to Ask an Elder Law Lawyer

Before hiring an elder law lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise needed to handle your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with elder law cases?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's estate planning, Medicaid applications, or elder abuse claims.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the best approach for my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your situation and what legal strategies the lawyer recommends.
  4. How long will the process take?
Whether it’s drafting an estate plan or setting up a guardianship, ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to take.
  5. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of the case. Make sure you know who will be working on your case directly.
  6. What documents should I bring to the consultation?
Ask the lawyer what documentation or information you should prepare for your consultation, such as medical records, financial statements, or prior legal documents.

How to Check the Credibility of an Elder Law Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable elder law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for elder law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in elder law and have experience with cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on elder law issues.
  • Check for certifications: Look for certifications or affiliations with organizations such as the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), which can indicate the lawyer’s dedication to elder law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with an elder law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Existing estate planning documents: If you have a will, trust, or power of attorney in place, bring copies for the lawyer to review.
  • Financial records: Provide details of your assets, including bank accounts, investments, real estate, and retirement accounts, as well as any debts.
  • Medical information: If the case involves guardianship or Medicaid planning, bring relevant medical records that detail the individual's health condition and care needs.
  • Insurance policies: Bring information about health insurance, long-term care insurance, and any other relevant policies.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about your legal needs, the process, and the lawyer’s fees.
  • List of family members or beneficiaries: Prepare a list of the individuals you want to include in your estate plan or who will be affected by the legal process.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and receive the best legal advice tailored to your needs.
