Linda was able to attend a very important meeting with less than 3 days notice. Had an out of the box suggestion to offer in our negotiation during the meeting that everyone loved and I'm sure helped our case. Continues to offer support but not waste our retainer as things are going well and additional work isn't currently necessary. I am so grateful she was able to jump in and guide us through this mess!

Neil Sussman has diligently handled my tax returns and provided me with sage, financial advice for over 30 years. He is an excellent critical thinker, is highly organized, listens well, is consistently responsive in all his communications, takes the time to understand and accommodate my needs as his client, and always delivers a top-notch work product and high-quality legal advice. Over the years, he continues to look out for my best interests in our professional relationship—done with grace and poise. Neil is an outstanding lawyer, a consummate professional and someone I would highly recommend. His accumulated knowledge and wisdom—over the course of his career as a lawyer—is obviously an invaluable asset to those that engage him for his services.

I am writing to recommend most strongly Neil Sussman, Esq. He has been my attorney for over 27 years and I consider him as one of the top international entertainment attorney and accountant on the market. He is an anchor in my businesses never holding back from the realities at hand. He is of outstanding character: disciplined, hardworking (24/7), trustworthy, loyal, and responsible. He holds a high standard to the longevity of his clients that's why he steadily and undramatically lays down the law. He is an intercal part in the foundation of our companies history. His tutelage has enabled us to successfully book and rebook internationally world-renowned headliners from Mary J. Blige, James Brown, Natalie Cole, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Edgar Winter, Rick Derringer, Run DMC, Bootsy Collins, Tuck & Patti, House of Pain, Babyface, Cameo, Biz Markie, Me'Chell Ndege'Ocello, Patra, Mad Cobra, Shabba Ranks, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, George Clinton & P-Funk All Stars, Jody Watly, Onxy, Johnny Gill, Stylistics, Gap Band, Expose', Adeva, Ghost & Culture, Boogie Down Productions, Super Cat, Organized Konfusion, Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers, Pharcyde, Cypress Hill, De La Soul, Black Street & Teddy Riley, Mark Farne', Ohio Players, Barbara Weathers, Delfonics, Kenny Garrett, Mary Davis, and more. Now, he is also my daughter's attorney assisting her on media, commercial, university tours, governmental State Department tours and more. He has truly protected my daughter's creative rights, images and more from all the charlatans thereby creating a sustainable foundation for decades to come. We are very fortunate to have you on our side. Again, I commend him to you most highly and without any reservations whatsoever.

I have used Neil's services for taxes and representating my bands since the 90s. He has saved my ass from all sorts of music business manipulation and done my taxes with integrity. Anyone who gives him a bad review is giving bad info and obviously not revealing true information. I highly recommend Neil for your taxes, business and music. He's also fair and affordable.

I have been using Bracepoint's services for (goes to check email history...) 8 years! I run a marketing and communications agency. Mark and his team are especially attuned to creative work, entrepreneurs and small business owners, and can scale up for larger corporate projects. He is well-versed in IP and excels at contract language. He has an easygoing attitude that is crucial when discussing stressful situations. I consider Mark and Bracepoint an extension of my team, my oceanside advisory board.

We used Mark Jordan to draft a revised Partnership to our business. We then came back to him to make some further modifications only to find his office had no record of our previous agreement that had been signed and enacted and had apparently lost everything. We would have to start entirely new with a brand new agreement which would cost thousands to develop. Mark was happy to charge us $600 for the Zoom call and his time to verify his office had lost everything. He even reached out when we weren’t paying him quick enough to complain about non prompt payment. I would encourage you to use someone else.

I recently consulted with Damien regarding a severance agreement I had already signed after being laid off by my employer. A section in the non-compete clause had been keeping me up at night—it made no sense, even after running it through numerous analyses. Damien returned my call quickly, and I was immediately impressed by his responsiveness and dedication. You can tell he works long, hard hours and is genuinely passionate about employee rights. He was generous with his time, actively listened to my concerns, and provided clear guidance to help me better understand the clause in question. Damien even pointed me toward additional resources to further unpack my concerns. What stood out the most was his thoughtful and reassuring approach—there was absolutely no "hard sell." I left our conversation feeling like he truly cares about his clients and the people seeking his advice. I highly recommend Damien for anyone needing clarity and support during such a stressful time.

Amsale Aberra law PLLC is one of the best law firm in Seattle . In 2019 I had a very tough immigration case and I hired another law firm and it didn’t go well, I spend more than 3k and finally my case got denied due to the lawyer’s irresponsible action. A few months later a friends of mine suggested to contact Amsale’s law firm. She was very kind, positive , thoughtful and a good listener. She listened the entire issue with the previous law firm, and what surprised me was her focus to resolve the problem instead of nailing down. After a brief discussion and consultation, I hired her to represent me the same case which I got denied previously. It took her shorter time comparing with the previous lawyer and successfully won my case. Not only that, through the entire process of my case with Amsale I was getting an update based on the information timeframe of each steps from immigration office. The best part of her consultation, if she thinks your case doesn’t worse to continue, she doesn’t wanna waste your money! This is how she does business ! I will always refer to Amsale law firm for friend and family because she is trustworthy!

I’ve referred a number of people to the Marshall Defense Firm over the years and, without exception, their feedback concerning the firm’s service has been exceptional. The terms I hear consistently are expert, professional, intelligent, sensitive and caring. Honestly, it’s a combination of traits which I see rarely see in law firms I deal with. What a huge compliment to the firm’s legal and life philosophy.

Almost a year ago I found my business in a position that threatened our financial viability due to the actions of a third party. I began the search for a new business lawyer and interviewed half a dozen firms without feeling as though they would be the right fit. Two minutes into my conversation with David Betz, I knew he was the perfect lawyer to represent our interests. Since then, Mr. Betz has become an integral part of our business operations. Not only was he successful in negotiating the original matter we brought him on for, but he has remained a close legal advisor and wealth of knowledge and advice. Mr. Betz communicates thoroughly, acts promptly, and approaches all matters with professionalism and expertise. Christopher Young Owner

Was referred to this firm by multiple people/ lawyers. I shouldn't have even wasted my time. Got more of a story about how they sympathize for my situation but basically because I'm a federal employee I'm not entitled to the same rights of protection as the general public, according to them. This is even with a judgment from the county court in my favor in regards to the matter. They just simply couldn't help with the employment matter. I suggest looking elsewhere for legal help.

I have been Gary's client for less than a year and I am not exaggerating when I say Gary has been a Godsend. My business was unexpectedly caught between a rock and a hard place with not one but two of our biggest project clients at the same time, with one of them potentially cutting my company's revenues we depended on for staying afloat and potentially canceling the project, and the other trying to renege on a big final annual payment we were expecting. Compared to other lawyers who were suggesting "going on full battle mode" upfront, which would have very likely incurred significant ongoing costs and little success against these large companies all while also costing us our established relationships, Gary's seasoned, diplomatic soft-approach (while showing a hint of a stick) tactic helped us get what we wanted in both cases without ever letting things get ugly or out of control, in a relatively quick and easy manner. At the end of the day we made the most minimal of concessions, and walked away winners in both cases, all thanks to Gary's experience, guidance and patient handholding throughout. I would recommend Gary wholeheartedly to all fellow small business owners. I could not have have done this alone or with the well-meaning yet disjointed advice from family and friends etc; having Gary on our side quite literally helped save my business, while maintaining even strengthening our relationships with our clients.

He's always done a great advising me, particularly in making sure that any contract that I might enter into was fair to me. His billing is transparent and reasonable, and he is very responsive in his communications. I certainly expect to use his services again in the future.

I contacted Zuanich Law about 22 months ago to get my gun rights back. We covered all the pertinent information they needed to start the case. I paid the retainer and left them to do what they needed to do without my interruptions. After several months I hadn’t heard anything, I was worried so I contacted them to see what the progress was. They filed a motion in my county, it was review and denied as there was a law change prior to their filing. Brian Zuanich talked to me in depth about refiling in Pierce County as that is where my initial felony was signed. Again I left them alone to file the motions and hoping this would happen. Again several months later, I was thinking this was a lost cause then I received an email from their office telling me that the Courts signed the motion to restore the right to own and possess a firearm in Washington State. Yeah!! I was really surprised and happy. It took longer than I thought it would but they stayed the course. There were other options I could have taken if this motion was denied as well but Brian Zuanich knew what he needed to do and how to move forward. That’s the important thing with you hire an attorney, make sure they know the system for the type of law you need to have help with. Yes, I am very satisfied with their office and will recommend them everytime!

Mister Brian Zuanich and his paralegal Kristy were an integral part of my civil rights restoration. Without sharing too many personal details of my case, I can say I had a rather unique complication with my process involving a move between Washington and Oregon that the Zuanich team were able to help me navigate and understand. Legalities between states and documents from one state to another are not always equal. For myself, and most others I'd wager, these are complicated matters and were something that I personally wasn't too knowledgeable of. The Zuanich law team, however, clearly laid out what options I could take and, after choosing what to do, along the way ensured to keep me informed and give me a clear understanding of what needed to be done, as well as what parts I could do to make things smoother in the process. Their know-how in what needed to be done got the matter resolved. I would recommend their services to anyone attempting to restore their civil / firearm rights in Washington or Oregon.

What an Entertainment Lawyer Can Do for You

An entertainment lawyer specializes in legal matters related to the entertainment industry, including film, television, music, publishing, sports, and digital media. They assist artists, creators, producers, and companies with contract negotiations, intellectual property protection, licensing deals, royalties, and disputes. Entertainment lawyers also help clients navigate complex industry regulations and ensure their creative rights are protected.

Whether you're an actor, musician, producer, writer, or influencer, an entertainment lawyer can help safeguard your rights and ensure that your business deals are legally sound.

When Should I Hire an Entertainment Lawyer?

You should consider hiring an entertainment lawyer in a variety of situations, including:

  • Contract negotiations: If you're signing a contract for a film role, recording deal, or publishing agreement, an entertainment lawyer can review the terms and negotiate on your behalf to ensure your interests are protected.
  • Intellectual property protection: If you're a creator (musician, writer, filmmaker), an entertainment lawyer can help secure copyrights, trademarks, and licensing agreements to protect your work from unauthorized use.
  • Disputes or litigation: If you’re involved in a legal dispute, such as breach of contract, copyright infringement, or defamation, an entertainment lawyer can represent you in negotiations or court.
  • Representation agreements: If you’re hiring or entering into a contract with a manager, agent, or publicist, a lawyer can ensure that the terms of representation are fair and comply with industry standards.
  • Royalties and licensing: If you're licensing your work for use in film, TV, or digital platforms, a lawyer can negotiate royalty agreements to ensure you receive proper compensation.
  • Talent contracts: Whether you are hiring talent for a project or negotiating your own appearance or performance fees, an entertainment lawyer can ensure the terms are legally binding and beneficial.
  • Film and television production: If you're producing a film, TV show, or other media project, a lawyer can handle contracts with crew, talent, and distributors, and ensure that all legal aspects of the production are covered.

Hiring a lawyer early in your entertainment career or project can prevent costly legal mistakes and protect your creative and financial interests.

What Does an Entertainment Lawyer Do?

An entertainment lawyer provides a range of legal services to professionals in the entertainment industry. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Reviewing and drafting contracts: Entertainment lawyers review, draft, and negotiate contracts for talent, production, licensing, distribution, and endorsements. This ensures that the terms are fair and protect their client's interests.
  • Securing intellectual property rights: They help clients obtain copyrights, trademarks, and patents for their creative works, and assist with licensing those rights to third parties.
  • Negotiating deals: Whether it's a film deal, music contract, publishing agreement, or endorsement, an entertainment lawyer ensures that their client gets favorable terms and is protected from potential legal pitfalls.
  • Handling disputes and litigation: In cases where contract terms are violated, intellectual property is infringed, or other legal issues arise, an entertainment lawyer can represent clients in negotiations, arbitration, or court.
  • Advising on industry regulations: Entertainment lawyers help clients navigate industry-specific laws, such as union regulations, labor laws, or FCC rules for broadcasting.
  • Managing royalties and residuals: They assist in tracking and collecting royalties or residuals for music, film, television, and digital content to ensure clients receive the compensation they are owed.
  • Talent agreements and representation: Entertainment lawyers often work with talent agents and managers, ensuring that their clients' representation agreements are legally sound and financially beneficial.

How Are Entertainment Lawyers Paid?

Entertainment lawyers may be paid in various ways, depending on the type of service provided. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many entertainment lawyers charge by the hour, with rates typically ranging from $250 to $1,000 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fee: For specific legal services, such as drafting a contract or filing a trademark, some lawyers offer flat fees. Flat fees are common in simpler or one-time transactions.
  • Contingency fee: In some cases, especially when working with talent, entertainment lawyers may charge a contingency fee, meaning they take a percentage (usually 5% to 10%) of the client's earnings from a particular project.
  • Retainer: For ongoing legal services, such as managing contracts and royalties over a long period, a lawyer may require a retainer fee. This is an upfront payment that covers future legal services, and the lawyer bills against the retainer as they work on the case.

It’s important to discuss fee structures with your lawyer at the outset to ensure you understand the total cost of legal services.

How Much Does an Entertainment Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an entertainment lawyer depends on the complexity of your legal needs, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of fee arrangement. General cost estimates include:

  • Hourly rates: Entertainment lawyers typically charge between $250 and $1,000 per hour. More experienced lawyers with extensive connections in the entertainment industry may charge higher rates.
  • Flat fees: For simpler services like drafting a basic contract, flat fees can range from $500 to $5,000, depending on the complexity of the agreement.
  • Contingency fees: Lawyers working on a contingency basis typically charge between 5% and 10% of the earnings from a project or deal. For example, if a lawyer helps you secure a $100,000 film contract, their fee might be $5,000 to $10,000.
  • Retainers: For ongoing legal representation, retainers can range from $2,500 to $50,000 or more, depending on the scope of the legal services and the length of the engagement.

Always discuss the costs and fee structure during your initial consultation to ensure that the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Entertainment Lawyer

Before hiring an entertainment lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they are the right fit for your career or project. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have in entertainment law?
Ensure the lawyer has experience in your specific area of the entertainment industry, whether it's film, music, television, or digital media.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, flat fee, or contingency fee, and ask for a detailed cost estimate.
  3. Do you have industry connections?
Ask about the lawyer’s experience and connections in the entertainment industry, which can be valuable for contract negotiations and deal-making.
  4. What contracts or legal issues should I be aware of?
Ask the lawyer to identify potential legal pitfalls in your specific project or career and how they would help you avoid them.
  5. What intellectual property protections do I need?
If you’re a creator, ask how the lawyer will help protect your intellectual property rights and prevent others from using your work without permission.
  6. How will you negotiate deals on my behalf?
Ask about the lawyer’s approach to negotiating contracts, ensuring they focus on getting favorable terms while maintaining strong industry relationships.
  7. What happens if there is a dispute?
Ask the lawyer how they handle disputes, including whether they aim for negotiation or litigation and how they would protect your interests.

How to Check the Credibility of an Entertainment Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable entertainment lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for entertainment law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in entertainment law and have successfully handled cases or negotiations relevant to your industry.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients say about their experience with the lawyer, especially in terms of contract negotiations and industry knowledge.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on entertainment-related matters.
  • Check for industry memberships: Membership in entertainment law organizations, such as the Beverly Hills Bar Association Entertainment Law Section, can indicate a lawyer’s dedication to staying up-to-date on industry trends and regulations.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with an entertainment lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Current contracts or agreements: Bring any contracts you have already signed or are considering, such as talent agreements, recording contracts, publishing deals, or management contracts.
  • Intellectual property portfolio: Provide details about any copyrights, trademarks, or other intellectual property you own or are seeking to protect.
  • Project details: If you’re working on a specific project (e.g., film, album, book), provide a summary of the project, your role, and any legal needs, such as contract negotiations or copyright protection.
  • List of collaborators or stakeholders: Provide information about other parties involved in your project, such as agents, managers, producers, or distributors, and any contracts related to them.
  • Questions about your legal needs: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, potential issues, and how the lawyer can help you protect your interests.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your legal needs effectively and provide the best possible advice tailored to your entertainment career or project.
