We hired Teresa after paying another attorney a lot of money in a probate matter. Teresa immediately took charge, won the case and got us a great result. I wish we would have went to her first, we would have saved a lot of aggreviation and money.

Mark has done great work for a reasonable price for many people I have referred to him. I would not hesitate to refer my friends, family and clients to Mark. If you have a Will or Living Trust done by someone else, have Mark review your documents to make sure everything is up to date and done correctly.

I have hired Mark three separate times; once to assist me in a complex Conservatorship with several Court appearances, and in a separate instance when I served as Trustee. In addition, he is doing my personal Trust. Mark is not only extremely skilled, smart and experienced, he is a compassionate and decent person; easy to communicate with and respectful. A very rare combination in attorneys! His creativity and resourcefulness are unmatched, as is his integrity. Also an incisive writer, I couldn't recommend anyone more highly than Mark Boykin. I'm very grateful to him.

We have worked with Citron & Deutsch for over 10 years. Of all firms in Los Angeles they really get what it is like to be an entrepreneur. They have helped me form many companies, gather investment in three companies, and sell two companies. Rick was a key part in our strategy, brining other people to the team, and helping me protect my personal estate in this process. Best Part: They believe in simplicity. They keep agreements and transactions as simple as possible with covering key parts. This keeps cost low and close rates high.

I can't tell you how grateful I am to Mindi Reid/Attorney. I provided her with an outline of what I needed. Thank goodness for her brilliant research skills, and knowledge of the law. She was able to turn my Homemade Will & Trust into a Legal Binding Document. I met with Mindi on three occasions and by the end of my third appointment -I was walking out the door with everything I needed in place. Fees were very respectable and appropriate. Mindi is trustworthy, honest and well informed. If anyone needs Estate Planning, a Will or a Trust- I would recommend an appointment with Mindi Reid. You'll go away with Pure Peace of Mind....

First I wanted to say "Thank You" to Mr. Nevins and also to Attorney Jennifer Jones, for being so professional and patient with us. I must say that Mr. Nevins is Excellent! My daughter and I had a meeting with him last week for a FREE consultation on a Probate matter. He was very knowledgeable and responsive to our needs. He listened to our issues and took the time to explain all of our options to us, in a manner that we could understand. I would highly recommend this Law Firm to anyone who needs legal assistance of this type. Thanks again.

Typically don't choose the low bid, but in hiring Loren this worked out very well for me. I was prepared, so during our first meeting Loren collected most all the info needed to ascertain what I needed and to complete the job. He understood that I wanted an Estate Plan that is robust and simple. After the initial meeting there were a couple emails and phone calls. At our second meeting, all the documents were completed accurately and signed. Loren took the time to listen and make sure I understood my options. I would easily recommend him for estate planning.

Michele is a great lawyer that will protect her client fiercely in court, she love to share her knowledge of the law with her clients but more importantly she is a caring lawyer. Michele is the type of lawyer that does not shy away from a challenge. I know this first hand because of what we went through with one of our eviction case. 2 days before a trial our lawyer bailed out on us due to fee disputes and common direction of the case, this lawyer was from the top law firm in San Diego. We had two days to find a replacement lawyer and was in panic mode facing a well known opposition. We talked to Michele and she took on the challenge, went to trial defending us with very limited information because the previous lawyer did not send back the complete case work on time. Michele argued and defended us zealously throughout the trial and when it was finally over, she was still in protection mode and making sure our interest is looked after. I can't speak highly enough about Michele as a lawyer and after many unfortunate lawyer experiences we will retain her service indefinitely as long as she continue to practice law.

Steven Wood has served as my legal counsel for nearly 20 years. First engaged as private counsel for plaintiff in civil litigation, and later as family counsel in estate planning and elder care issues, I have been impressed with his dedication and service in every realm. Mr. Wood allows and encourages client participation, assuring my voice is heard and concerns voiced through his. With integrity and a genuine passion for the law, Mr. Wood successfully represented me through depositions, mediation, and trial. He is adept in assembling legal teams, expert witnesses, and appearance in multiple counties across the state. At a time in my life when trust was difficult to extend, Mr. Wood proved himself steady by every measure, and in this continues. Thank you Steven!

There are times when an experienced lawyer needs the help of another experienced lawyer, and this is what led me to Bob French. A valued business client had a problem in northern California, and I found Bob through reviews and references. The tricky legal situation called for excellent communication and strategic skills, and Bob delivered a great result for us. His client communication was excellent and very responsive, and the matter was resolved within weeks by Bob to everyone's complete satisfaction. I would encourage anyone looking for legal representation in California to consider Bob French. My clients and I recommend him enthusiastically. I am looking for ways to work again with Bob on other California matters as they may occur.

We were about to give up hope of finding an attorney to take our case before the statute of limitation ran out. So, in a last-ditch effort to find an attorney Diane sent out a plea to a number of attorneys to take our case on contigency. At the 11th hour, Michael took our case because he really believed our group was not treated equitably with other employees. Michael is a very ethical and professional attorney as well as thorough in his pleadings. He travels over 100 miles one way to appear in our court. Whenever we have questions or concerns, he is very patient and takes the time to make sure we understand what is happening and what to expect. Our case will be decided the end of January. Michael has worked so hard on our case and we will probably feel worse for Michael not getting paid if we lose than we will for ourselves. We feel he has gone above and beyond what is required in our behalf. We would definitely recommend his services.

I am a retired English teacher on a pension. Accordingly, I was also an estate document do-it-yourselfer. I thought that after spending many hours carefully researching and writing my documents, that it would be an easy matter to find an estate attorney to vet them and pay a consult fee for this service. I was mistaken. The first attorney I spoke to, one with superior ratings, said that if I paid $1.00, he risked liability. Attorney after attorney, likewise, did not offer assistance, essentially ignoring my do-it-yourselfer status and, instead, offering exorbitant services. Needless to say, being made to feel like a pariah was not the expected outcome for my self-reliance! After attorney number eight, in steps Attorney O'Kane, the first person sympathetic to my predicament. She confirmed that, in general, attorneys would be reluctant to take my case “as is” because the practice of estate law is rife with malpractice lawsuits. Yet, she was concerned and agreed to help me. We made an appointment for a consult, free of charge. She made sure I understood that she would examine my documents but that she would not warrant them. She would then offer a price for re-doing my documents according to California law and that I could accept or reject that price without obligation. She spent at least one hour carefully reading, taking notes and asking questions. The price she offered was more than reasonable. Through the process, we communicated easily via email. Her office staff were very helpful. I am now finished with my bona fide documents, the time I spent as a do-it-yourselfer was not wasted, and I'm very happy. Attorney O'Kane is to be commended not only for her astuteness and workmanship but, moreover, for her warmth, caring and integrity. She therefore receives five stars.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
