I will start off by saying our case did get resolved, but this was also an easy slam dunk case that shouldn’t have cost this much. We were trying to terminate the biological mother’s parental rights but she was charged with murder and plead to manslaughter and had been in prison for the last 2.5 years and looking at 8 more years and had not had contact with the 5 year old child for the last 3 years. I initially was told this could all be resolved for $5k retainer and that’s why we hired Spencer. However, at the docket call the other side wanted to proceed with jury trial which no one expected. They had to scramble to get the case together as they admitted they hadn’t really looked at the case over the last 6 months for trial on a Monday. We were told he needed another 10k to go to trial. Well they prepped for trial (mostly the paralegal) and last minute on Friday right before the trial, the mother signed over her parental rights. 3-4 days of prep and not going to trial blew through $7k of our retainer in addition to the initial $5k we gave them?? We expected something like $5k but $7k? How much more would we have had to pay if we had gone to trial which the they thought would last 2 days?? Definitely look at the prices and sign something in writing before you hire them The mother and her lawyer stalled and duped us and our lawyer into spending all this money and time for nothing and our lawyer did not anticipate any of this. The law firm also acted like they were very busy with other cases. They took a few days to a week and sometimes it took a second email for them to respond to anything. I would say not the worst but not the best law firm given our experience. If I could go back I think I would’ve gone with another firm honestly.

Spencer and his team is handling a strange case for me, my ex girlfriend is trying to take custody of son, even though we are not married just a ex girlfriend. Him and his team are on top of things at all times and it is going great. I would recommend him to anyone who needs a family law attorney. I will update next month when we go to court.

I was in a recent custody battle and needed an attorney for representation. I went on Google and found the Nilsson’s Legal Group. Had a conversation with Mr. Spencer Nilsson and he assured me of plan of action for my hearing. Here I am 6 months later with custody of my 2 children and child support free. I would recommend them to anyone who needs legal assistance in their child support hearings. Spencer did what he said he was going to do and he kept his word! Thanks again to The Nilsson Legal Group for all your help!

I was referred to Joseph Soto and I am still currently working with Mr.Soto in my case and he genuinely cares about my life. He understands that I have made mistakes in the past but puts my accomplishments and progress 1st for everyone to focus on. He has worked with me a lot and I appreciate his help. My child is on the line and he encourages me to keep doing what I am doing and each time we have gone to court, I have gained a step forward with him by my side. Not once have we taken a step back. He is an awesome lawyer and respects me as a human, mother and client. I have faith this case is going to end great, I put all my trust in him and I know he won't let me down. He gives me information straight forward, doesn't beat around the bush. Even if it hurts to hear, he tells the truth. Great lawyer. WIN MY CASE JOSEPH! (to win a case is 50% lawyer 50% client, YOU HAVE TO DO YOUR PART TOO!)

I’m very thankful for Lovelace Law. They took my case on during a difficult stage in litigation and when I had to move on from a previous attorney who was way overpriced and gave bunk legal advice (watch out for KR). I had a contentious and emotionally sensitive probate case, and they handled everything with the attention, legal expertise, and professionalism I thought I had been paying for from the beginning. They got me to the finish line and my only regret is not having hired them from the beginning. A special acknowledgement to Abby Butts who was especially strong during settlement negotiations.

One star because Cade looks like a less-handsome version of Quagmire from Family Guy. Excellent rate? I don't think $99 for full representation during the entire course of my divorce proceedings, however, did not live up to the Lovelace web site. My ex paid her attorney a one time fee of $20.00 and the divorce was a success. We are no longer married, so why did Lovelace charge me $99 for real? I was overcharged $79.00 by a shady divorce attorney. Don't pay extra like I did. Find the $20.00 divorce attorney and get the same result as this guy charging $99.00. Fifty used to be the going rate, but there are so many more divorces now. Lovelace has got to be kidding me charging $99.00 like it's something special. It's just a divorce! Same result wether you pay $50 or $20, but $99? Hell no.

Matt Davidson was referred to me by a friend, so I called him for a free consultation. Due to COVID-19, our consultation was over the phone which fit my needs perfectly. He was so easy to talk to. He ensured all my questions were answered, and I never felt like I was "on the clock" or rushed through our conversation. I hired him right away. His staff was easy to work with and efficient when it came to scheduling and rescheduling (my own fault) the appointment to meet in person. The fee was very reasonable too. I would recommend Matt's office for any estate planning needs.

Terrible experience with Sarah particularly. My coparent withheld my ability to see my infant on multiple occasions, Sarah charged me for documentation that didn’t improve or remedy the situation; the coparent was not held accountable whatsoever. The response I received from filing the expensive paperwork Sarah’s firm advised was my coparent filing a false police report saying their vehicle was broken into implicating me for which I had proofs were 100% false (the vehicle was NOT broken into or tampered with and I was nowhere remotely close to area it was located at the time in question). I was required to meet at police stations following that accusation - know what the coparent showed up in?? The undamaged vehicle in question on the DAY FOLLOWING the accusation. (For the record, it’s supposed to be a crime in Texas to file a false police report). Again, none of it mattered when we *never made it to court* — saddled with $25k worth of representation debt (when the standard for family court settlements is ~$11k to my understanding), a hefty child support amount, and ONE day more than a standard possession as a non-custodial parent. I wrote her an angry, frustrated “who do you work for here?” email to which she felt the need to call me personally at 3 am having me tell her I thought she was the perfect person to help me with my situation or she would be resigning my case. Should’ve dropped her then and there. I’m an honorably discharged veteran, a former federal employee, an Eagle Scout, etc. I was up against someone with a an assault record. Continuously told her firm I wanted a 50/50 coparenting agreement and wasn’t trying to skirt child support because I didn’t think it would help my case. Not what was presented at the 2-3 court days we were supposed to have, I took off work for and made special arrangements for but didn’t actually “take.” We never made it to court - ended up in mediation with a RETIRED judge who didn’t read or pay any attention to the facts of the case whatsoever as his blanketed opening statement at mediation was - “I don’t care what the facts are here, I’m not taking any child away from his mother short of something drug related” - a determination based solely based on gender/sex. I did 90% of the talking during mediation; Sarah and her assistant sat there and barely spoke. I’m not an attorney. I didn’t get paid $25k to represent someone. Had no idea what I was doing. Sarah worked with the coparent’s attorney and came up with a 30+ page document that provides more coverage for my co-parent than me and I was billed for it; co-parent walked away from the case on a pro-bono basis. If I mess up, jail time and fines. If the co-parent messes up, there would be hefty court fees for me to enforce anything and then next to 0 repercussions for them. My coparent has been so empowered by how easy it was to walk over me that she has continued to violate the agreement (never missed a day with my son, coparent’s missed a plethora; coparent doesn’t send written updates when our circumstances change, I’ve had to; coparent moved outside the agreed upon living area, repercussions are supposed to be me becoming custodial, NOPE; coparent filed 2 more false police reports since implicating but not naming me to avoid harassment charges, nothing stopping them). If you’re a single father out there for any reason and are looking for help, know upfront no one (courts, attorneys, etc) cares about the dad’s rights or involvement in a child’s life. Since the resolution, I’ve struggled to make ends meet between the debts and my obligations. Think when I’m struggling to this degree that I can afford or would even bother going back to court to have my coparent “held accountable” for the violations?? Steer clear of Sarah’s firm; felt massively overcharged for the minimal support or intervention I received from them.

I tried to do be my own lawyer. I went to court after waiting months for a hearing and was told by the judge that I did not have the right paperwork. The judge then told me to go find what I needed on the 2nd floor and to come back when I had what I needed. As I sit in that office, all kinds of thoughts were going through my head, then in walked crystal! I explained my situation to her and what the judge had asked me to do. She told me to sit in the lobby for a few minutes because she had a client. I sat in the lobby with my wife frustrated that we did not have the proper paperwork. Crystal returned after a few minutes and told us to follow her back to the judges court room. From that moment on she handled all the paperwork, court documents, custody and child support. I never stepped foot in court after I became Crystals client. Thank you so much Crystal for being such an amazing lawyer. You made a stressful morning turn into an easy fix and got the job done quickly and efficiently.

Crystal did my divorce in 2012 and I couldn't be happier. When we found out that my granddaughter was living with a convicted pedophile and her other grandmother refused to kick him out, Crystal got me custody of her. She had to deal with a father who was obstinate for no reason other than to be obstinate (he hasn't been a part my granddaughter's life before or since).

Crystal Sieber at Marx, Altman, & Johnson handled my divorce case this year (2015). Going through this for the first time was not easy. Crystal was sweet and considerate knowing that I was having a rough time of it. She looked after my best interest and gave me solid advice that I had not thought of when considering all my options. Other than MY emotional struggle, she made the experience as good as she possibly could by being supportive, getting everything done quickly, and going above/beyond fixing something for me when she didn’t have to....She just stepped in and did it....I can't express my gratitude enough. She is a very nice person and great to work with...for those of you considering divorce….I would absolutely recommend her to anyone. Very professional and caring. Side note: I did not have a lot of issues with the negotiation my divorce...but in any event the service at Marx, Altman & Johnson is easy in terms of the overall process and easy on the pocket book.

This is my third time to hire Ms. Adame. I will not seek the advice of another attorney after consistently working with Ms. Adame. She is knowledgeable, she articulates and communicates with her clients, and fights for her client's rights. She is truly an EXCEPTIONAL attorney. I would advise hiring Ms. Adame, and you will not have to look any further to obtain the legal services you want.

Excellent law firm and legal team. Trey Harris and his team were such a helped to me during such a difficult time in my life of my divorce and custody battle with my 3 kids. Our divorce started out pretty bitter and when Trey and his team took over, it was like a whole new ballgame. They were so friendly and helpful I couldn't have asked for better legal representation. Summer and Genevieve Barr were pleasure to work with. They were always there to answer any concerns I was having and allowed me some kind of peace throughout this process. They didn't disappoint. They were a God send! I am so thankful for Harris Law Firm! I recommend them to everybody I know that needs legal help.

I do not recommend this law firm. I was told when I started the probate for my mother's estate that it would cost anywhere from $5K to $6K. Months later I was told by Mr. Leonard that it would be closer to $8K. Now the price ends up being almost $11K!!! I was very clear about what the estate involved upfront so I don't understand why the price was so high. I was provided a 15 page bill when I questioned the charge. They have a portal to use as a way to communicate and upload documents. There were a few times I asked questions and I had to beg for an answer (or they just ignored me). Find another attorney unless you want to pay a crazy amount of money for minimal service.

I had a great experience with Bob Leonard and his knowledgable team--from Bob, himself, to his paralegal, as well as his office staff. Everyone is helpful and really cares about their clients. I also loved their online system that allowed me to interact with any of them 24/7 or to see what was going on with my case. I would definitely hire them again!

Hell no.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
