Even though he could have gotten more fees from me, Mr. Hartley explained that sometimes there are more, cheaper options available other than lawyers. For example, trusts are great, but in my situation, I could get the protection I needed from Umbrella Insurance at a tiny fraction of the price. Who knew it covered that stuff? I thought it was just for if you hit your limits on an accident, but it actually can sometimes cover personal liability. Oh, he and his people also helped me re-title my house, which apparently was done wrong by my previous preparer when I bought the place. I was surprised and frustrated but grateful that someone pointed out to me the error. They handled it quickly and efficiently and at an affordable price. Also, his support staff is amazing! I was trying to pay online using a credit card and couldn't figure it out and within about 2 minutes, I got a phone call from the front desk who offered to do it for me. I didn't even have to pick up the phone or find their number. Everyone is very professional and gives frank and helpful legal advice. I was very happy and surprised when they suggested low cost alternatives, and how quickly and easily everything went. The next house I buy, modification to a will I need, or if I'm ever sued, I know who I'm calling!

My husband and I purchased our first home this past winter. We could not be happier with our choice of attorneys. We had heard such horror stories about the homebuying process, but due to Mr. Will's level of skill, knowledge and professionalism and the services we received from a realtor and lender recommended by Mr. Will's paralegal, Dody, our experience was a wonderful experience, one that we will remember for a long, long time. Thanks, Mr. Will and Dody, for making the homebuying experience a pleasant one!

My wife had a speeding ticket that was over 85 mph so it was a reckless driving offense. After talking to several different lawyers who quoted prices, some over a $1000, and gave little information I called this office. I spoke to the Legal Assistant who spend twenty minutes explaining the law and what we could do. Their price by the way was hundreds of dollars cheaper than anyone else. Did I mention my wife also had two other speeding tickets in the past two years? Mr. Beales was able to get the fine reduced to regular speeding. We live in Georgia and never had to appear in court in VA. I can't tell you how glad we were to find him.

Jennifer was very thorough informational and drafting of my estate planning documents. She was very nice to work with and always has a smile on her face. Although I was sceptical because of her youth, she is extremely knowledgeable, even more so than older attorneys I've hired or fired. Would highly recommend. I look forward to going back and working with her to re-organize my business.

I have had Mr. Dolan do several things for my personal estate as well as my business including my contract portfolio. The service provided has been top notch every time and I highly recommend him. He has a way of explaining things that makes the average person better able to understand and evaluate the advice that he provides. He offers great service at a reasonable rate which is very hard to find in the legal world. I have also referred him to several of my clients, peers, and friends, all of whom have said their experience was just as positive as my own. If you are looking for a reliable, honest, and knowledgeable legal professional, then Mr. Dolan is a fantastic option.

He helped me with business litigation, my divorce in 05, General business and contract law. He knows the law very well, and knows how to apply it. Don’t let the his relaxed attitude fool you. In law the “devil is in the details” he knows the details. One of the best kept secrets in the area. A good lawyer with good rates. And he will actually return calls. I find that refreshing. And if you need him. He can be reached after hours. Much better service than the ambulance chancers you see on TV.

First of all, may I compliment on how awesome he is??? The most affordable lawyer I have ever seen for a case like this. So affordable I don't even want to post how little my fiancé (at the time) had to pay in case he changes his rate into the future. That's how affordable and fair he is. In all fairness, I did his filing for him. Haha If you have a lazy gold digger for a wife who wants to take your money bone dry he is definitely your man. I would say he is the best divorce lawyer in Hampton Roads. The best quality and price that I have ever seen. And he will end it! End it! End it!!!! He got her to agree to terms of my fiancé to sign...and this is a woman who initially wanted to murder him! I thought I was saving a life when we met. Anyway... I know he thinks he was always in email corrospondance with my fiancé but it was always me that emailed him, found him in the first place and made things looked like my fiancé had sent it. I did it out of love *sigh* at the time *sigh*. Only thing he ever did when it came to you was verbally speak. Never email. You were always speaking to yours truly. I'm just really good with writing things. Kinda my schtick. I wasn't impressed with any other 10 or so lawyers I checked out, some even in person...I thought he was screwed. Lol. Because my fiancé at the time had no money because he pays child support and apparently still doesn't understand responsibility until he has to get it court ordered. Which I think is ridiculous. Who likes court??? Mark is your man. He can handle it. He may be the only one that I could ever envision to be chipper in court. Probably because he knows he's going to win. Lol: So glad I found him because prior to him, he had another lawyer I literally fired. So when I found this website I remembered I forgot to rate the poor man! Mark! Here's a read so long it will make up the time it took for me to actually rate you. Finally, a message to Mark. You did such a wonderful name on my fiancé's case. I really really appreciate you more than you will ever know. I was raised around lawyers my entire life and you are such a JOY to be around! Most lawyers are such a snore or they're scary. You did a great job assuring a lost man, that you could turn his life around. I was in love with him. You did great! And for that, I forever thank you. But wasn't that the best filing job, you've ever seen??? I did that to save on cost and time. Best of luck to you and your family.

We were looking for the usual estate planning documents after handling our parent's estates. Luckily, they had great plans and we decided to follow their leads and prepare ours. After much research--several weeks--we settled on Ms. Schott Murray. She is the consummate professional who understood our concerns and requirements. After an in-depth interview, she presented options to craft our plan to meet our situation perfectly. Ms. Schott Murray and her staff were the best choice for our family. We have recommended her services to several friends, and they have remarked to us how pleased they were to engage her services. Finally, I don't think there is a better lawyer to handle estate planning issues. She has vast experience that is key to understanding a client's needs and I can recommend her without concern. Thanks!

Powell has been our personal attorney for at least 25 years. I am a financial planner and understand the need to keep legal plans up to date. When I need to reach him, I get a response from him or his legal assistant in a timely fashion. As our children grew and our situation became more complex, he kept our Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney and Medical Directives up to date. He has also done work for my adult children at my behest when they lived in North Carolina or Virginia. They have liked him and his work very much. Some of my clients have chosen to use his services and they have learned that Powell works well with their other advisors. He cares deeply about his clients and you cannot buy that attribute.

Mr. Scheid handled my nephew's brain-injury case in which he was at fault for drunk driving. This turned out to be a long, drawn out legal matter. Mr. Scheid was patient and thorough. He kept us abreast of developments at the many intervals of the case, and ultimately struck an equitable deal with the prosecution, which benefitted both the injured party and my nephew. For that, I am very grateful.

I am a Ph.D. candidate in the field of criminology, and I know what makes a good attorney. I give Mr. Walker my most sincere endorsement. He is honest, caring, knowledgeable, and an zealous advocate for his clients. He was truly worth every penny I paid him! On a more personal note, the family law case I went through was the most difficult experience of my life, and Mr. Walker went beyond the call of duty by being a friend, counselor, and comedian-who could always turn my frown upside down-in addition to being my advocate. I would recommend him-highly-to anyone going through any type of family law issue. He will give it to you straight on what you can expect, and he will let you know the potential outcomes and alternatives to any issue. He earns his keep. He is articulate and knowledgeable. Furthermore, he has a wonderful rapport with most of the judges and attorneys in this area. I can not say enough about how amazing he is. Look no further, you just found the best attorney around!!!!!!!!!

Elizabeth Ho is an excellent choice - Thorough and knowledgeable, and spends time to listen to your concerns and questions. I chose this lawyer after reviewing about 6 other lawyers in the Washington, DC area. Elizabeth Ho helped us process my marriage based green card application and wills. She responded to my very first phone inquiry by spending quite a bit of time answering my questions and describing the application process in detail. Right after, she followed up with lists of documents to gather prior to seeing her in person. Ms. Ho was very careful in reviewing my green card application and providing advice as to what happens next. In addition, she offered to write our wills, which I meant to do for a while. This was perfect timing, because wills serve a very strong evidence of bona fide relationship. Importantly, once our application was submitted, Elizabeth kept following up on our application status , letting us know every time she receives a notice from government offices. This was very helpful since at one point, my mail stopped coming and I was afraid to miss my OPT notices. This was also especially appreciated because our case was already completed, and Ms. Ho was providing these updates solely as a courtesy. I have already receive my green card. Excellent choice - I highly recommend this lawyer.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
