zero stars. negative if I could. I've been waiting for months to get my paid in full agreement. The lawyer was late on getting me a prenup, then it turned to the postnup and I still dont have the document (over 4months and counting). The balance was paid in full at the beginning. My follow up emails go unanswered. This has been an awful experience and has now made me vulnerable which is exactly what I wanted to prevent. And now I am receiving notices of for payment when I have not been given what I already paid in full for. Absurd. Unprofessional. Scam artist.

I have had several meetings with Donna over the last 7 years. I have always found the staff to be friendly and professional. My emails were adjudicated quickly and phone calls for follow up handled in a very timely manner. Aside from the expert legal advice, I found Donna to have great wisdom from her years of experience and she gave me guidance which helped me in the long run. I am in an excellent position financially (and emotionally) because I followed her advice. I always felt she had my best interest in mind and I am so thankful she was there to help me.

Don’t go here. They like to act like they care about you but then don’t really listen to your problems. They cut you off and go off what they believe and not what you truly want. Don’t believe them on the billing because it will change I’m already in debt as is don’t go here because they will charge for anything without telling you. And your bill they send isn’t the amount they tell you in the end. Save your time and money don’t go here it’s a scam.

My case took way longer than it should have. I waited for months with no response. Was told that the 5000$ retainer would cover the case then received another invoice 2 years later that I owed an additional 4200$. For a divorce? Non contested. DO NOT USE HER! THEY ROPE YOU IN WITH LIES AND THEN CHARGE YOU MORE THAN YOU CAN AFFORD. THEY NEVER RESPOND YOH HAVE TO CALL MULTIPLE TIMES AND THEN THEY CHARGE YOU FOR NOTHING.

Please be. Careful and take heed Do not give your money to just anybody ! Do your research ! Do not take referrals from people you barely know ! This lady took our money and didn’t think twice about it . She knew they type of charges brought against our son and she looked us right in the eyes and said she was experienced in criminal matters such as our sons . We put our trust in her The persuasive words she used and all ! We were so emotional At this time and distressed that we rushed as they all make you feel you have to be in a hurry to hire attorneys so that they collect your money . She Haney done one thing in 5 months to help our child and we are out of $5k she will not refund and informed us that she is filing a motion To withdraw because her and I do not get along ! Wow look who we have to depend on for representation for the justice systems !!!!

Caring, understanding, straight to the point. I had lost custody of my son on Jun 24, 2010 to my son's father. My old attorney did not tell us anything. All he wanted was more money. My husband and I met Ms. Edwards when I was a basket case. She was concern about me. She explained all our options. Rather then charging us a large amount of money she took a really small retainer and let us pay her out in 2 payments. She filed an appeal and a request for a new trial. On Sep 1, 2010, I won my son back. This was all due to Ms. Conswella and her hard work for my husband and myself.

I found John to be an excellent attorney who represented my interests and provided superior legal advice after trying another firm who did not. John moved the process along swiftly, cost consciously, and with the expertise that was representative of his years of experience. His compassionate staff was very responsive and we quickly had matters settled. John helped me to fight for what was right and not chase after those things that in the end, weren't worth it, or didn't matter. While my children were older, he still covered my interests in being a part of their lives. He protected decades of assets that I had worked for, independently of my marriage. I would strongly recommend John as a great family law attorney based on the handling of my case and the professionalism that he and his staff exhibited.

I was seeking legal advice on filing custody for my child. In doing so, I was naturally looking for when and how the best time to pursue this would be. In contacting this firm, I was only allowed to talk to a paralegal who is the front person for the firm. All of my questions were filtered through the paralegal and I did not get any time with one of the attorneys in the firm before actually filing, though I asked for it. After filing and upon my first encounter with Mr Clark, his responses contradicted all of the answers and points given to me by the paralegal in my consultation before I filed. I would not have filed this case if I had been given these same answers during my legal consultation. My contention is that an attorney should give a potential client first hand answers and an assessment of their chances on winning a suit before the client files it. Most attorneys do this. During the suit, Mr. Clark and the opposing council and court agreed upon non attorney mediation between the parties. I was not instructed or advised on how to proceed or handle myself during the mediation. The mediation yielded an agreement between my child's mother and myself that had given me signifigantly more time with my child. I needed to check on some dates before signing the agreement making it final and legal. But since I left the mediation before I signed the agreement, her attorney negated it. Mr Clark did not advise me on this fact or how the mediation worked so I lost signifigant time with my son and settled for just an upgrade of my parental rights to the current statutes. My contention here is that it is definitely an attorney's duty and obligation to understand and advise his client on how to proceed with any court appointed legal processes that he agrees to submit his client to or the client may suffer losses from it.

Do not use her for family law. She did work with me on payments after a $1500 down payment. She appeared in court twice a total of 3 hours and didn't want to talk to me at all after I lost my first motion. Ignored my emails to appeal then responds 6 weeks later after I had been found in contempt asking for more money to move forward. She talked more about her personal life then mine. In my opinion this attorney ripped me off and did not give me fair due process per her legal oath.

I hired Mrs Stevens in June 2013 for a divorce/custody/child support case. It was always difficult to get in touch with her. Her office door was always locked and I never saw staff. She knew I suffered from heart failure and had a disabled son, I confided my fears in divorcing my husband, fears in my son losing his dad, and explained I wanted to keep things as stress free as possible. During initial consultation, I felt as though something wasn't right with this office but I needed help with my divorce. I went to court on my own to get a hearing on legal fees due to my situation and was granted no legal fees charged to me. During Mediation, Mrs Stevens had attitude and seemed to be feeling bad for my soon to be ex husband. I always wondered if she was texting my ex during Mediation because she was always on her phone. After mediation, we began having issues with visitation. This Attorney always ignored my calls. When I received my temporary divorce papers, she actually had a different name in the Change Name field, no where close to my name! When I did finally reach her and ask about this, she said "Oh it's ok this is temporary. The divorce decree will have your correct name". But this temporary order with the wrong name was FILED in court! Not long after, Mrs Stevens claimed she no longer handled Family Law and released me as a client. Imagine my surprise when a few days later I looked up family law attorneys and found her again, still practicing Family Law. This caused extreme stress. I felt as though I wasn't taken seriously, and it caused severe depression. Frantically searching for a Divorce Attorney for a fast approaching court date, I found an amazing law firm. Then I realized, Mrs Stevens didn't take her job seriously and seemed to only want easy cases. I wish I knew back then that I could bring charges against her. I'm glad to see she has been disciplined and I hope the clients she has now don't go through what I went through.

Complete waste of money. I hired her for what I thought was a simple case regarding separation of property/ child support/visitation. Here I am 9 months later paying another lawyer $2500 to do exactly what I hired Ms. Stevens for. On top of that, Ms Stevens showed up late to court.. so we had to find another judge to view my case. Ms Stevens did not do so much as apologize for being late. After the court date I tried contacting Ms Stevens multiple times with questions regarding my case.. she simply told me that she had done what I hired her to do and I could hire her again if necessary.

He did not represent my child. He considered my child's abuse a joke. He talked down to me like I was a nobody and literally took sides with the abusive ex during the cps investigations, court hearings, did not listen to the findings of the interviews with son's counselor and family court social workers. I finally won my case but even when ex decided to sign an agreement due to overwhelming evidence, Jim Cobb still tried to talk him out. He "represented" me, has failed to return multiple phone calls or emails. When or IF he did return the emails it was one or a partial sentence if that. He only agreed to what the other attorney asked for, didn't stand up, deal, NOTHING. I could have done that on my own for free. The divorce ended up costing me thousands, dragged for almost 2 years, and a monthly child and spouse support of $2200, I make $50k per year.

This lady is the worst communicator. You have to squeeze every ounce of information from her. Even your court date! She can’t let you know unless you ask her. She is stubborn and very rude. Customer service is not a term she is familiar with. I hired her for a devorce case and was thoroughly disappointed in her. She wouldn’t do anything until I pushed her. She would not pass any information along. Not even the court date. When I asked her she said “ I don’t know what you would do with that info”. That was after waiting for a whole month for updates on the case. She misspelled names on my case but still refused to take responsility. She removes you from the picture like you don’t matter in your own case. Please look elsewhere for representation. Don’t waste your $$. I was so tempted to fire her so many times but because of the scarcity of resources I put up with her. Thankfully she completed the case albeit the pathetic, menial outcomes. I sometimes thinks I would do a better job representing myself.

Hired her to represent me in my Divorce. The communication with her was not great at all. She received an temporary court order and did not notify me to attend court nor did she provide me a copy of the signed temporary order. Which resulted in a motion for contempt. She came to court on the motion totally not prepared which resulted in my ex not being held accountable for his contempt charge. I however received the shorter end of the stick due to the lack or representation. She then decided to remove herself from my Divorce case 16 days before trial. The paralegal are oblivious to what is going on as well Total waiste of money.

I hired her to be a voice for my daughter in a custody case. Big mistake, she bullied and manipulated my daughter and did the same with me. She clearly expresses favoritism and lacks the ability to present facts in a case. She accuses people of doing things that are inappropriate inwriting but when confronted she denies or hangs up on you. I had to continually request for a year and a half for a copy of her itemized statement of her time on case, she would respond that she doesn't have to provide that to me. She is unprofessional and her demeanor has left my child and I afraid of her due to manipulative attacks and lack of knowledge in the court system. We have filed a formal complaint and can only pray that action is taken before she can ruin another person's life and case.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
