In December 2021, I found myself in a dire situation. I was a trusting wife whose husband had sole control over our finances, investments, business, and estate.  After a 20-year marriage, where I believed that my spouse was a trustworthy, hard-working partner, I discovered that he had engaged in a pattern of illegally siphoning money from our properties through deceptive means and had hidden these assets from me. Our marriage was ending, and I had little to no funds to pursue legal representation.   I found Elyse Margolin through a referral from a trusted friend. From the first consultation to the day I met with Elyse to sign my final divorce documents, she became my guardian angel, confidant and trusted friend. Elyse demonstrated such compassion, humanity and professionalism which saved me and my son during a frightening and traumatic period in our lives. This was not as easy divorce case. Assets had been concealed in such a devious and complex manner it required the assistance of a forensic accountant to uncover. Elyse and her staff were tenacious in tracking down every account, every hidden debt (including massive tax liabilities), and uncovering every deception. Her dedication to her clients and legal expertise ensured that I could remain in my home and provide for my own future and that of my son. Elyse is a crusader for her clients. She believes in justice and doing what is right. I was the underdog in a case that could have easily left me destitute and homeless. But for the dedication and support of Elyse and her amazing staff, I would have lost everything. What happened to me is a cautionary tale of what can happen in a marriage when a spouse is entrusted to have total control of all the marital finances without oversight. I made this mistake and Elyse was there to counsel me about the importance of taking control, finding my power, and becoming the master of my destiny. If you see yourself in anything I have shared, please call Elyse Margolin and know that she will be your counselor and savior just as she was mine.

The   Law Offices of Levin & Margolin   by far is truly exceptional. I can't emphasize enough how highly I recommend Attorney Elyse Margolin. Once you experience her services, you won't need to look anywhere else. Elise is incredibly responsive, highly knowledgeable, and a person you can trust implicitly. Her entire team is dedicated to safeguarding your best interests throughout the process. I can confidently assure you that no other attorney will put in as much effort as she does. In my case, the legal matters were quite intricate, but having Elise and her team by my side filled me with empowerment and confidence. When it was time to step into the courtroom, I felt invincible because she was representing me. I can't stress this enough; Elise is a formidable force in the courtroom, and I truly pity any opposing team that goes up against her. Should I ever require legal assistance in the future, there's no doubt I'll be reaching out to this Law Firm. If, for any reason, they are unable to take on my case, I know I can trust Elise to refer me to someone equally exceptional. I have unwavering faith in Elise, and my trust extends to her entire team, who are not only highly professional but also genuinely compassionate. A million thanks Elyse and Nicole.

Not only did I feel like I entered another world when I first met Elyse Margolin - I did enter another world. This firm was radically different. Elyse was my 3rd attorney in a very complicated contentious divorce. She completely understood the issues immediately, had no problem grasping the twists and turns and contortions that had been going on. She was kind, warm and supportive, quick, smart, effective. She and her staff jumped in full steam and were personally invested, determined not to let any of the many balls drop. That was 12 years ago. I am forever grateful to have her as my attorney. My friends are always in awe when they hear how much she has done for me. Recently I contacted her to help me with defaulted support payments. Again, she quickly responded and worked tirelessly to find a solution to a very complex and unusual set of issues. As a client, I felt cared for, listened to, understood. I appreciated that she was very clear, straightforward and honest about what we had to deal with. She had an unique ability to handle many things thrown at her at once and also to meticulously focus on very complicated aspects of legal procedures. She researched, strategized and represented me with finesse and with a remarkable memory of the numerous details. She adjusted her fierce defense of my case according to different circumstances/people. She could calmly resolve issues, but when necessary, you never saw anyone fight harder. She kept an eye on the ball and was prepared to close down any red herrings opposing counsel threw our way. She also has connections to very competent, personable, outside professionals to assist when needed. Over the years, I witnessed her behave with respect and integrity toward many lawyers, judges, court staff, baristas, including the homeless who greeted her outside the courthouse. I was always proud to have her as my counsel. It was an enormous relief for me to receive the level of expertise along with genuine concern for me and my children during the most stressful time of my life. Elyse, along with Shana, Tess, NIcole and her dedicated staff truly kept my ship steady. If you are looking for traditional legal counsel, where every moment is calculated and you dare not send off yet another reminder email, for the cost of it— then I do not recommend this firm. This firm is radically different. Elyse is simply cut from a different cloth. You won’t be disappointed.

Saddie Johns sympathy feels put on and not genuine. We met at different times and it seems she cannot handle stress very well. Johns may be good with simple divorce proceedings, however when it comes to complex situations I would recommend going with someone else. She is good for filing excessive paperwork, but that comes with a hefty price tag. Overall, it was more talk and backdoor dealings with the opposing counsel. Good luck to anybody choosing her.

I highly and strongly recommend Ms. Johns to handle legal cases based on my experience of her super professionalism and unbelievable personal touch in handling my brother's divorce case. She always sat on client's spot and understood the emotional hardship of going through divorce process. She would leave no mosses unturned to get to the fact and build a fair case. Who needs a giant law firm that charge a huge overhead? Ms. Johns and her assistance are always very responsive to address our questions. Without her help, I could not start to imagine how my brother's case would head to, probably, still miserable and unhealthy for the rest of his life. I truly believed that Ms. Johns is an angel sent to answer my call for help especially when my brother needed help the most.

Deborah was an absolute disaster to work with. She was busy on two trials and said as much and apologized when I told her that I could never get a hold of her and she never responded to calls. She charged me $14,000 for one month of horrible work product. She has line items like text message .75 hours. She said she was giving me a discounted rate which should’ve been a red flag but then just was merciless on that hourly. More importantly, when she was preparing my response, I would tell her the details, and she would write it up with blatant lies that I could never defend in court. I had to rewrite everything she did. I am in shock. As I was calling around to replace her numerous lawyers had things to say about her that I wish I knew before I hired her. Buyer beware.

I can honestly say that my experience with John Chason has been amazing since the first call. It was a call I didn't want to make but John goes above and beyond to take care of his clients with integrity, respect and kindness. When I approached him I felt lost, blindsided and scared. Now I feel clear, empowered and protected. With over two decades of solid experience, you're in the good hands of a genuine expert and it shows immediately. I felt like I could speak freely as if talking to a friend and trusted his counsel 110%. John provided me with the realities of my specific situation and came up with a strategy to make my dissolution as painless as possible. He looked out for ME and was prepared to fight for my interests from the second I contacted him. He is a true professional. If you're looking for an attorney who's going to have your best interests at heart and make an unfortunate situation less confusing and overwhelming, then contact John Chason right away. Seriously...stop looking. You found your guy.

I was seated next to attorney Chasen in court today as I waited for my case to be heard in family court. Although he's not my lawyer, he seemed very knowledgeable, gave good insight on the cases we saw, friendly and helpful and dressed very professionally, and had the best presence/communication with the judge from all the lawyers in the courtroom from a professional standpoint (his client's case was called before mine so I got to watch). I thought it was worth posting a review as I would consider him if I needed to hire a lawyer. He even helped with my phone setting.

Jennifer was terrific at representing me in Los Angeles County. My divorce case originated in Hawaii, with my ex-wife fighting over visitation with my 2 daughters and demanding large alimony and refusing to settle. It took 5 years, but it is finally over and I am free of alimony in CA. Jennifer wrote successfully and researched past case law to make a successful argument and get my ex-wife to settle. I thought my divorce would never be over, and finally it was. I would certainly recommend Skolnick Family Law.

My story is probably nothing new and will sound very familiar. Phil and I met and married in Dallas. I worked during our marriage and my husband was the primary source of income with consideration to our lifestyle. I also helped with his financial problems early in our relationship, before and after marriage. I had more in savings, a steady job, and an A rating credit report. After three years of marriage he wanted to move back to Los Angeles, where he was working in the entertainment field, and restart his career that collapsed due to a substance abuse problem. With reluctance, I quit job and career path and moved from Dallas to Los Angeles for my husband’s career, which increased his income substantially. My career however faltered in Los Angeles and I had to start over again in a different field and work my way up. After 12 years of marriage we divorced. Two years after the divorce was final, my ex came back requesting to stop support claiming health issues was causing him to work less. I contacted my original attorney and he could not take the case due to his workload and traveling and he sent me several referrals. After contacting all of them I felt confident with Jennifer Skolnick. She returned my calls, was communicative of the process and gave me realistic expectations of possible outcomes. She didn’t sugar coat the realities of court proceedings which I appreciated. Part of the legal process required financial disclosure on both parties, and this is what scared me most. I was diligent about saving my money for the future and I thought a judge would side with my ex-husband and say that I didn’t need his support any longer. With a fine-tooth comb, Jennifer reviewed my financials and my ex-husband’s and determined that there were no significant changes in either of our income’s and he did not work less or make less since his visits to his doctor. But still noted that a judge will make the final decision. She then reviewed his medical reports and tests and found a statement buried in the reports that Phil admitted that he did not believe that his health was affecting his work and was able to work full time-even though he claimed his health was the reason he was requesting to stop spousal support. I believe it was Ms. Skolnick’s diligence in reviewing years of financials and medical reports that helped our case for spousal support to continue. In writing my declarations and memos of opposition Jennifer wrote with a logical and concise flow, had facts to back up statements of Phil’s financial stability, my contribution to my marriage, giving up my career for his, and his ability to continue to work and that his health improved with medication. There was no comparison with Ms. Skolnick’s declarations and memos of opposition and my ex’s attorney’s. My documents were factual and well written whereas his attorney had no facts to back up any of their grievances. Ms. Skolnick’s attention to detail was valuable. She asked several questions about my marriage, asking about subjects and details I never thought would make a difference in defending my case. Her questions made me think about what I did for my husband financially before and during our marriage, where he was in his life before we met and when we met, our lifestyle habits, his spending habits and mine, and the responsibility of taking care of our home. It was an emotional 5 months of gathering documents and remembering the beginning, middle, and ending of a relationship but Ms. Skolnick was able to help and keep me on track with her “to do lists” for me that helped me get through this process. Ms. Skolnick is an exemplary attorney and I would strongly recommend her.

I hired Jennifer Skolnick as my attorney for a divorce case in Los Angeles County, and she did a fantastic job and I would highly recommend her. My goal was to settle out-of-court, and Jennifer is very good creative suggestions to reach an out-of-court settlement. Jennifer writes beautifully, both brief and clear for the Judge: I could tell that the Judge had read and understood Jennifer's well written court documents submittals, and I believe that it clearly helped the ruling, especially in getting visitation with my daughter. She also never, ever over-billed on my case. I can certainly highly recommend Jennifer as an excellent Family Law attorney.

I reached out to Dr Kramer due to a google search for helping with Malpractice from Kaiser. While Dr Kramer did come across short and rough over the phone, and requested a 5-figure up front retainer, I wanted to vouch for him since I saw so many people complain about his initial phone call. He is rough and direct. But that is what you want in an attorney. He’s also uniquely qualified since he has both an M.D. as well as a J.D. He got his law degree from Stanford. I called on Memorial Day, a holiday where most firms only let me leave a voicemail and never actually returned the call, and DR. Kramer answered the phone personally. I was requesting an ex parte motion be filed asap and despite the short notice, he was willing to get it done in less than two days filed with the court. He may not be the cheapest attorney, but he’s direct and answers the phone or messages you back quickly. This is a rare thing in the legal industry. Most attorneys will likely give you a lot of lip service. I actually prefer the direct to the point nature that Dr. Kramer gives. He doesn’t waste time. So if you are very sensitive and need someone to be gentle with you over the phone for an initial meeting, he likely isn’t the person for you. If you want an aggressive, hard working attorney who is overqualified for his role and still willing to take smaller cases, then he is your man. As an experience finance expert who graduated from Harvard University, I can genuinely tell you that this is a rare trait to have from an attorney. Anyone would be lucky to have him represent their case.

I have required the services years ago to get custody of my young son at that time and recently for a divorce. I cannot recommend Alexandra Leichter and her offices more highly. Everyone in the office is great and did great work on my matter. Besides Ms. Leichter, her son Ariel Leichter-Maroko and her associates Jenna Charlotte Spatz and Preston Green all do fabulous work and as a client, you are privileged to be represented by any or all. In my case, Jenna really did a ton of work specifically on my behalf to be certain I was properly protected along with Ms Leichter herself.Their knowledge of the law and attention to detail are excellent. I might add, that Ms. Leichter helped me get custody of my son at a young agenda was truly outstanding as a trial lawyer. Feel free to contact me if you need more information. She sees the big picture and addresses minute details at ALL times — and she literally thinks 100 steps ahead. Her team works like a well oiled machine. I felt safe and protected during the most vulnerable time of my life, when life as I knew it was crumbling. Having been married for 25+ years, my divorce involved complex legal issues and included extensive tracing of funds, the sale of multiple properties and assets, spousal support, stock options, and retirement plans. The office advocated and protected my interests in and out of court. I am sooo grateful she took my case.

Don't go here unless you've got a pile of cash to blow through and don't care what it costs, and want it to take forever and be overly complicated. I'd give zero stars if I could. I was (unfortunately) recommended this firm by my UCLA law school Family Law professor (I was in law school at the time; I'm now an attorney), to help me file for divorce. My ex and I split amicably and didn't have any assets or kids, so it should have been easy. This firm waaaaay overcomplicated things and charged me thousands of dollars. I ended up retaining a different firm who got it done in less than 2 hours of attorney time, and for way way way less. On top of that, this firm tried to charge me for work they did for a completely different client, and then even tried charging me interest on that work. I kept requesting a copy of my invoice, which they ignored and were rude about - only to finally notice the erroneous charges way later. It's been a nightmare dealing with them and I wish I'd never been recommended. Go somewhere--anywhere--else.

Nearly 18 months into my case, a judge told him that he was shocked as to how he had mismanaged my case. He made mistakes on several different RFOs which he filed. In my opinion, he made agreements throughout the case that turned out to be not to my benefit. He made a major blunder in my final settlement agreement. Nearly 18 months into my case, he admitted that he never read my "Pre-nup Agreement". In my opinion, based on his negotiations, I'm pretty sure he also never read my "House Agreement". He tried to blame his mismanagement on everyone else but himself. One day, he even tried to blame me until his associate shut him down. In my opinion, due to his mismanagement, mistakes and inability to get the important things accomplished, I lost a tremendous amount of money in addition to the tremendous amount of fees he billed me. I got rid of him and had another firm finish my case. In my opinion he is the worst attorney I have ever worked with.

I wish I could give more stars. I would have suffered great losses without this firm. Mr. Friedman and his staff have dealt on my behalf without waiver, dealing with multiple frivolous and egregious filings from a malicious party and his disreputable representation. He not only protected my interests, he has obtained favorable decisions and even sanctions against the attorneys. Mr. Friedman is an attorney who fought hard for me and I have complete confidence in this firm.

If you’re facing a divorce with someone you believe may go to any lengths to unjustly destroy you in court, take everything from you, and/or do you feel the cards are stacked against you for any reason? Then Danielle Salice is who you want going to war for you, because she will give everything, she has into protecting you and getting you justice. When I first met Ms. Salice, I was terrified, I felt so alone, afraid of what the future was going to hold. I was in a bad marriage, had recently been diagnosed with a health condition, and was in the beginning phases of my divorce. Without sharing too much detail, I shared a bit of my story with an online platform of a group of moms seeking advice. Ms. Salice was one of the fellow moms who reached out to me to offer support, but in no way did she appear to be seeking a client, but rather, she was simply being kind and compassionate. The mere fact that she was a Family Law Attorney didn’t even come into play until much later. When it became clear that I needed a lawyer, I didn’t even know she could represent me in my county, but on one of the scariest days of my life, I reached out to Ms. Salice in a panic unsure of what to do. I cried telling her how much I wish she was able to represent me in my county, and that was the moment I she notified me that she could. From that point on, Ms. Salice immediately went to battle for me, and continues to fight to protect me, and my child. At the beginning of the process, I was so scared that I would lose everything, including my child all because my ex has money, and I was left with nothing, and no way to work with my health. Not only has Ms. Salice fought every battle for me as if she were fighting it for herself and her own family, but she also held my hand through the whole process. She calmed me down and let me cry night after night as I would be falling to pieces over the pain caused by my divorce. I thought I stood no chance until Ms. Salice came into the picture. Since she has joined my case, not only has she secured custody for me, but she has blocked my ex and his lawyer’s every attempt to take advantage of me, push me around, or bully me into submission. I have cried several times in gratitude thanking Ms. Salice for all the work that she has done and continues to do. Thank you, Danielle, for fighting so hard for me, for protecting me, for making sure I don’t get taken advantage of just because I am scared, or don’t have as much as my ex does. Thank you, Danielle, for stopping them from taking my baby for unjust reasons just to get out of paying child support. Thank you for not letting them use the system to exert power and control over me, and thank you for always being there to support me emotionally through this process as well!

I see what everyone is talking about! Danielle is a breath of fresh air, all it took was 30 minutes for her to break down what needed to be done with my child support case. I got emotional when I was explaining things to her and she understood. She even allowed my sister to call her so she could also explain to my sister what needed to be done. I hope you get all the blessing in life, Danielle...thank you!

This lawyer took our case and held on to it for 11 months. He NEVER followed up with us and every time we called to check on the case. He'd say he was working on it, It's on his desk... Every excuse in the book. Always asking rhetorical questions when I'd call. He'd alway end the call with I'll update you in a week. BS lawyer. He did NOTHING with our case. I went to another lawyer and in less then 6 months the case was done. One would think all BH lawyers are trust worthy. Think again! Please Stay away for Michael Kosloff!!

Michael Kosloff didn't file any paper work on my case for over a year, didn't keep me updated, didn't return my phone calls. The guy was a disaster. After I fried him, another attorney finished my divorce in less than two months. Never, ever use this guy. He'll drag your case out. I suspect he just wants to increase the billable hours.

My experience with Anthony wasn’t favorable from the start. The case was a simple one at best and somehow he felt he needed to go beast mode attack on me with levying labels on me before even knowing the facts…lacks professionalism and skill..I wouldn’t recommend him…

I'll start with the good because there's less of it, and I always like to start my reviews with something positive. Tony dresses well and acts very professional in a courtroom. He stays calm under pressure, and he doesn't let his emotions rule him. Now the bad. He hears, but he doesn't listen. On multiple occasions, I asked him specifically to do certain things and to not do certain things... and not only did he blatantly disregard my polite requests, he made my case worse. He threw me under the bus because he felt it was in my best interest. Instead of fighting for me, he went on the defensive immediately because he already had judged me guilty. I had plenty of evidence that would have helped our case, but his hubris was so great that he felt it wasn't necessary. I trusted him with my reputation and the well-being of my daughter... and he failed me so badly that I needed to hire two more lawyers after him in an attempt to clean up the spectacular debacle he had caused. And even then, he tried to make my life a living hell. Instead of accepting his responsibility and making the transition to my new lawyer easy and orderly, he fought me every step of the way and claimed he was being professional by doing so. He claimed he knew what he was doing, but he charged me for two hours of research that if he was what he purported himself to be, he would have already known. Juvenile dependency court is not for the untrained or unprepared... and when I retained Stolar & Associates and was assigned him, I expected that I would be taken care of. Instead, he nickeled and dimed me for so many things on my bill that I was afraid of calling him... and one should *never* be afraid of calling one's own lawyer. His tone and his affect when talking with me was so antiseptic and wooden that I seriously thought he had Asperger's, or some deep-seated psychological trauma that left him unable to convey normal human emotions. But I think the worst part in all of my dealings with him were the half truths that he told me. He withheld key facts and information from me that he shared with the opposing counsel, and I found out about it afterwards when I was finally able to see my own file after I fired him. He's an intelligent man, and I genuinely think that he could be good at whatever he sets his mind to. I also believe that he thinks he's a good man, and that he believes he's fighting the good fight. But the road to Hell is paved with good intentions, and there are some things that when done are very hard (if not impossible) to fix. If you hire this man to be your lawyer, keep him on a short leash. Tell him exactly what you need him to do, and listen to his advice if he gives it to you... but take it with a pound of salt and get a second opinion. Also, make sure he BCC's you on *all* of his email correspondence regarding your case, especially negotiations with opposing counsel.

Mr. Abramowitz completely overlooked several critical case details. He excused himself from my case, claiming "irreconcilable differences". He is an ineffective communicator. When he had the opportunity to show that my ex was unwilling to comply with court ordered mediation, he did absolutely nothing. I had enough money to get out of town and stay with a friend. Every other attorney I have hired has left me with the sense that I received more than I paid for. Their results were beyond what I ever believed would be possible. Mr. Abramowitz was a decision I wish I had never made.

Hire someone else. He gave me incorrect legal advice. He made multiple mistakes, such as serving my ex with the wrong court date on documents, which he then charged me to fix. He billed 8 hours for a 2 hour trial – scheduled from 2pm-4pm. He was completely clueless in the courtroom. He charged me 6 times what a specialist with 20 years quoted me at. He tacked on an additional 12 hours ($4,200) of supposed research just two days before the trial, which he had confirmed the week prior that he had already completed and was done preparing. Overall, he was incompetent and his research consisted of him admittedly “Asking around the office.” Make sure you research him; there are other negative reviews from other clients on other websites – which I discovered later. I do not recommend this attorney. In the end I lost everything because of him. When all was said and done he blamed the judge, the county, and then later me.

I hired Ms. Myle August/September 2020, I was going through a horrible divorce, DVRO, child custody cases. I have paid her around $11K, she is not good in court, she seemed more on my ex’s side than mine when we were at the hearings. She was going with whatever the opposing lawyer was saying, which is crazy. She is super sweet and more like a friend than a lawyer. She would get back to me either by text or email right away when I had questions or concerns. It was my first time ever having a lawyer so I didn’t know she was charging me hundreds of dollars when she would reply to my texts or emails. At the end of the day, I hired a different lawyer and ended up paying thousands of dollars to Ms. Myle for wasting my time and for being a follower of the opposing side than doing the right thing for me and my kids since I was paying her and not the opposing side.

Please do a internet search on this attorney. He used a strategy of fighting every little motion or detail in family court, which leads to a long litigation and family law case which results in over billing and unnecessary attorney bills. He failed me in my family law case in many ways despite trusting that he was doing things in my best interest against my former spouse. Do yourself a favor and find another family law attorney.

The Firm is only looking out for their own best interest $$$$. Complaining of the work they are being paid to do. Unable to meet deadlines, numerous errors, bad discovery, no depositions, late filing, missed deadlines. These failures ultimately were the firms need to withdraw from my case after three years and after receiving over $100,000 of my hard earned money. Their unexplained, inconsistent, excessive and unreasonable billing was the excuse used to abandon my case and place blame on their client for non-payment....yes after they already billed and were paid over $100,000....my money and time wasted. You are only $$ in their eyes. Don't make the same mistake I did....they will only succeed in making your situation worse, leaving you to pick up the pieces with no remorse!!

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
