I have found Brian Hanlin at Wick & Trautwein to be extremely professional, helpful, and knowledgeable. He is helping me navigate the confusing claims process of a class action case that has been in progress for many years. He participated in a conference call with me and the class action attorneys and has given me the confidence that my claim with get processed correctly. He is also extremely detail oriented and I feel has the capacity and skill set to handle this type of case and would highly recommend him for your legal needs.

Dealing with Wick Law…best to heed their negative reviews. They seem more “Wick”-ed than helpful as burn through a retainer. We met with them to discuss case only to be told at the END of the meeting we were being charged for it. They said we should be glad they were only charging for one lawyer during the consult since they decided to bring in two lawyers to sit in. Two for the price of one they said laughing at the end. I was not aware in slightest we were paying to tell them our case! Then took thousands in retainer (not realizing money was drawn monthly even though they were not actively working our case) which continued until just a few hundred left while we were wait on insurance to resolve our claim. Worst part is when we were trying to move ahead and re-engage (and actually have them pursue action) they sounded interested- then just ignored us - 2 months no reply even after multiple attempts from us to hear back from them. A professional should at least tell you if they were not wanting to take action further. We would have appreciated that before they drained us of several thousand in retainer draws!

I was referred to Kevin Havelda at Wick & Trautwein by a highly reputable top-tier law firm and I quickly retained him to handle a substantial and complex case involving employment matters and commercial litigation. Kevin’s quick response, meticulous attention to detail and innovative strategies delivered the results I needed. His advocacy guided me through one of the most challenging and stressful times in my life. I have utmost trust in his counsel and would highly recommend Kevin Havelda and the Wick & Trautwein team to anyone experiencing complex legal issues!

Michael Palmer came highly recommended to me by a very well- respected lawyer in Grand County, where I live and filed. His name is Frank Parker. Frank spoked very eloquently about Mr. Palmer. Frank Parker has also recommended countless clients to Mr. Palmer with great satisfaction and successful results. Mr. Palmer provided a complimentary zoom session with me for a consultation, he was very patient with his time and answered all my questions thoughtfully, and he was very thorough! What I like most about Mr. Palmer is how patient and compassionate he is. Because I have never engaged a lawyer, the task felt very daunting. After the consultation, I decided to hire Mr. Palmer and Palmer Family Law. Throughout the whole process, he never lost sight of my needs, and always give me "sound advice"! I highly recommend Michael Palmer and Palmer family Law!

Richard Lane provided an amazing experience for me when resolving my insurance case after I was hit by a drunk driver. Mr Lane overcame my reluctance to deal with an attorney by being forthright and patiently explaining the insurance process and how he could get it resolved. After not getting anywhere with the insurance agents for months, Mr Long was able to get everything settled very quickly so I could receive the settlement. He was very reasonable on the percentage that he accepted as payment and I would confidently recommend Richard Long for anyone who needs a lawyer for dealing with the nightmare of insurance. Thank you Richard!

The senior associate Katherine Karstetter allows her clients to violate laws and encourages them to file false government reports saying they have a right. Falsifying reports to the FBI, police, making calls to anyone who knows me and scouting USA is not okay trying to get me fired, and trying to stop my advocacy, training and support of disabled, low income, and children is not okay. Shame on you. Glad you defend people who have no defense. It is okay for your client to have my information my family's information our addresses, phone numbers, license plate numbers on sticky notes in her possession. You defend and believe pathological liers who report false felony accusations, who has a personality disorders when you know they are mentally ill. Shame on you. Abusing and neglecting your child is not okay, and continuing to affect children's and others mental health, and physical health with inappropriate interactions is not okay. Your law firm should be about facts and the truth not defending blatant liers and allowing them to stalk and abuse people. But yes you are a shoulder to cry on that obviously does not have the mental capacity or morals to distinguish right from wrong. Shame on you.... You said I court anyone has a right to file complaints so here it is. You are a guardian ad lidium Shame on you, you do not protect anyone.

I would give zero stars if I could. I was supposed to be served with court papers and he emailed me an attachment with an unfinished report without the case number and no court room. It said if you can not make it to court you can attend through WebEx. He sent me to the wrong court room on the wrong county. I still have not been served papers probably. They will not return my calls or texts.

Chris Radeff and her team are conscientious, caring, and dedicated representatives for their clients. I know I got incredibly fortunate to find such fantastic legal counsel, and their dedication to doing what is right is incredible. They can't control the outcome (no one can or they would be called miracle workers, not lawyers), but they will do everything they can to help people obtain freedom and present the realities of the court system that clients are entering. I have always felt as though I were truly getting "counsel" from Ms. Radeff and her colleagues, and then I was able to make the decision about which move to make, and that they understand what is happening in my situation rather than seeing me as simply a source of income. If all law firms operated on the same principles as Radeff & Hart the world would be a much better place and lawyers generally would have a better reputation.

I made an appointment to talk to Eric Wollard about a family law issue and he was extremely unpleasant the entire conversation. He was hostile, impatient and condescending without even really knowing any of the details of what I needed. I’ve talked to many lawyers about our family law issue and every single one told us it was more than doable and were very understanding, informative and pleasant. But not This guy. Without even trying to ask for more real details He tried to inform me what we need to do isn’t possible, which I find hard to believe considering a least 6 other lawyers have told me otherwise. This man repeatedly questioned decisions we’ve already made regarding the past and acted as though we were stupid for it. At one point I didn’t fully understand what he said to me and I asked “I’m sorry could you say that again?” And he raised his voice to me just under what I would consider a yell. The call only lasted 7 minutes because of how rude he was I had to tell him I could already tell It wouldn’t work out and would not be proceeding with him. In a very unpleasant tone he said “great. Have a nice day.” The only reason I’m still calling around for lawyers is to make the best informed decision and find the right fit. Based off how rude and horrible this man was on our phone call I would never recommend him. I’ll definitely be going to one of the previous lawyers I’ve talked to.

Warning. Do not use this lawyer. She does not seem like she knows what she is doing. My sister used her for her family law case. In which she was a winner going in. She exhausted the entire retainer with emails, ignored all of my sister request and was not looking out for best interests of my sister and then walked away from her case a week before new trial with no warning, after she continued it out for her own personal issues. This lawyer seems un educated and incapable. My sister had a slam dunk family law case with a protection order. Once she hired Lisa her abuser continued to harass her and this lawyer did nothing but waste my sisters money then walk away when she needed her the most. She can't handle women who are abused or being abused. I will be warning all of my friends family and huge network of individuals stay away from this lawyer and firm. They did one over on my sister and now she left her in a lurch after she gave her all this money. This is one of those shady lawyers you stay away from warning. I will be telling my huge network. Save your money, hire someone else.

I hired Ms. Stout for a personal injury case. She made multiple promises but did not fulfill one promise. She finally responded to my emails and phone calls a few days before my case had to be filed. Then when it got down to filing the case she had me do that but it was a waist of my time. The way she explained why I had to file was because the fees to file a case had gotten so expensive. I then started receiving documents from the court that I did not understand. She would respond on how to do the documents from the court but I am not an attorney and did not understand most of what she told me to do. I have a traumatic brain injury - I do not read very well and my thought process has problems. Her stock answer was another attorney can jump in at anytime once the case is filed. I only received minimal advise on what to do once I filed my case with the court. Ms. Stout had no intention of being my attorney. I still do not understand why she took my case if she was going to do nothing. I said some nasty things to Ms. Stout about her and then she dropped me. In my opinion she just wanted an excuse to get rid of my case. I contacted her muliple times and probably heard back from her less than 10% of the time. She was always busy with anoter client. Possibly my case was to difficult for her or not enough money. She is a do nothing attorney. Think twice before you hire her.

Any DA who would allow Vincent fraker to work in their office has zero trust. The man happily broke a man’s neck, paralyzed him, and then continued to drag him around ensuring the victim could never walk again. The man never resisted and yet they handcuffed both arms and legs to the hospital bed. Then the police attempted to hide the body camera’s footage. Absolutely disgusting. And the police, DA’s and government wonder why so many have went from distrusting the police to actively disliking them.

Leading up to my permanent protection order hearing, I offered over and over if we needed witnesses or documents submitted. There was the woman who had met me at the hospital. The officer who made the arrest and others who had been involved. Cullen was dismissive and said it wasn't needed. She also never informed me of my rights as a victim of a violent crime. My assailant mocked me as I shakily gathered my belongings after going through security. When Cullen arrived for my hearing, she failed to even bring my file. She was disheveled and had nothing prepared. She asked if she could borrow my personal file. She told me to call my 19 year old daughter, who was watching her younger siblings and ask her to come testify. She scrambled to find a sitter and get there asap. A DV advocate who had worked with me was there for another hearing and on the spot, Cullen asked her to testify. It was completely haphazard. The judge even commented that Cullen was unprepared and offered to extend the protection order but stated that there had not been enough evidence presented by Cullen to justify a permanent order. I paid this woman a substantial amount and she failed to even show up with my file. It was an awful experience.

The very first conversation I had with this lady not just showed me a flicker of hope but also that I'm not as invisible as I feel. She has shown me that someone will listen and someone will hear you. I have no doubts in my mind that this lady will represent me to the capitol letter of her name as long as I show that I am worth fighting for. That 1 star review I read comes from anonymous... Seems like you were a coward afraid to fight for yourself or even let your name be known. I hope you learn and grow from this and make better decisions in the future.

Horrible representation used her for my divorce and she had her own agenda did not listen when I explained safety concerns regarding my ex and our child. Stated that I was not able to get back child support which was wrong. Did not advocate at all or give rebuttal arguements. Do not use her you would be better off representing yourself and saving money .

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.

  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
