Devra represented me in my recent divorce, with my ex-wife being very uncooperative. Even still, she was able to get the process pushed forward and settled within a short time frame (about 120 days) with a reasonable settlement. She was very diligent - and made sure that the case was taken care of.

When he handled a case in which I was the victim, Jbili showed up with no investigator’s notes and no idea what, if anything, the county’s investigators had discovered. Ironically, the accused was readily available and easily located had Jbili only done his job. Due to his lack of professionalism the guilty party walked. Maybe he’s mended his ways but my experience is that once a lawyer is a slacker he’ll always be a slacker.

Mr. Jbili, is an in competent attorney. Takes your money and you get a plea deal. Mr. Jbili is not in it to fight for you he’s in it to make a quick 5,000.00. Then he forces you to take a plea. That’s why he’s cheaper than other well know. Attorneys because he is not willing to fight for you. And everything you ask him is always bad news. Never anything positive from this man. He is not an honest attorney and he was conversating with the so called victim, who set me up. Please if you care about your family member do not retain this man. He’s not worth it. He lies also. Who wants an attorney like this? No one. BEWARE OF KHALID JBILI. Don’t waste your time or money.

Well not sure about other reviews about him. Told me a protection from abuse order was able to be "NOT CRIMINALY INFORECABLE" and told me to shut up (I'm the husband as I hired him for my wife) Judgeected him and informed him that yes it was! Second well he was supposed to fight child support but when he submitted the documents to the court he stated we did not contest anything! So now on top of 1600 to hire him to contest child support (which he didn't and went against our wishes I mean for crying out loud that's why we hired you Kyle!) We now have to fight yet again because he went against our wishes and did as he pleased a second time... Shame on us now. INCOMPETENT and has been reported to apporiate agencies. If I had it to do over I'd have hired someone else.

My husband and I honestly believe people work for people and we were very blessed to have found Susan Eggart and her team. Susan and her team were extremely ethical and patient during what became a very lengthy and emotional adoption case of my niece after my sisters passing. Susan was always 100% committed to our case and fighting for our family. Susan consistently went above and beyond , always focused on the larger picture, respectful in the court room, and outside of the court room. Susan's calm and empathetic demeanor offered emotional succor to myself and my family. There are no words to adequately express our gratitude to Susan and her team for all of their hard work during the course of our adoption case. We highly recommend Susan Eggart!

Good lawyer but unethical, she got me my kids but didnt fight to get me any child support to help raise them. Be sure to read your paperwork very carefully and expect to be charged for her or her staffs mistakes and double her original quote. What should have been an easy case turned into a year long process and cost over 10,000.00 after being told it could be taken care of for 4,000.00, i paid her on time the first 8,000 then she sued me for not paying the last 1,700.00 within 4 months of her finishing my case and charged me an extra 1,000 to sue me. No contact from her was just waiting for my loan and was served. Greedy and not caring at all will stretch out her work to maximize her bill.

PLEASE DO NOT HIRE THIS ATTORNEY!!! This attorney was/is unable to live up to their end of agreements and has no sense of want or urgency to respond to clients. I was in an unfinished consult and had left numerous messages through both phone AND email. I'd waited almost 2 MONTHS before I realized that she had forgotten about my case and situation. When confronting her on what had (technically hadn't) happened with not responding to me in my requests on how to proceed with getting her this important information, she'd had no idea that I'd even called and left email messages. She had to review her phone log from the previous month and found her "notes" that I'd called and left a message on how to proceed. She'd also had to review her email messages to see that I had INDEED reached out to her again. Based on this, she'd never had the intent of calling me back and had totally forgotten about me as a client and a person. I understand if you have things you may need to take care of, but communication with a client should be a number one priority for any lawyer. She agreed that she was unable to live up to her end of our agreement. She'd offered, now that I'd called and asked for my original papers back, to finish helping me almost 2 MONTHS AFTER our original meeting. I told her after not hearing back from her and seeing how she had to review her notes to even see that I'd called and left a message, I was forced to handle my situation on my own. She was definitely non-caring in her final responses to what had happened and also my entire situation. When I'd asked for a refund, she'd said she believed I was not entitled to one. I'd presented my facts on her non ability to even respond to my many requests for progression on my matter. I was given the option to partially be refunded IF I'D SIGNED A NON DISPARAGEMENT AGREEMENT. I choose not to sign this agreement that would keep me from expressing my feelings and opinions on what has transpired. She'd said , in a response to me not wanting to sign this, she would NOT refund me anything and felt she was being bullied. Being bullied and not wanting a true review of your services are two separate things. I can accept the fact that she had kept my money. I can NOT accept the fact that she thinks she handled this entire situation correctly. I chose to speak my feelings and opinions on her, the firm she represents and her ability to do what us, as clients, should expect. PLEASE DO NOT HIRE THIS ATTORNEY!!! SAVE YOUR MONEY AND LOOK ELSEWHERE! YOU'LL BE HAPPY YOU DID. -PM

I had been going through a terribly contentious divorce where my ex was totally uncooperative with the orders of the court and left me in a very difficult position. She was ordered to participate in the division of marital property including dividing the home equity, and bank accounts, savings bonds and mutual funds. My ex did her best to block nearly everything that was ordered by the court and after some good work from my original lawyer after some time this lawyer just gave up. I then hired David Gibans and it was one of the best moves I ever made. David stepped into the breach picking up the pieces and worked to get a Promissory Note created for half the equity in my former marital home as ordered by the court. David Gibans actually had to go to the court and have the court create the Promissory Note since my ex would not do what was required. We then proceeded to get a number of retirement mutual funds divided as was ordered by the court. Again, the ex was totally uncooperative and only with great persistence were we able to get the assets divided by the very hard work from David Gibans. After several years of legal fighting, we were finally able to get done what was ordered by the court. Only recently did we finally complete the divorce settlement with the forced sale of the marital home and the division of the home equity. Again, my ex was totally uncooperative, and we had to take her to court via a contempt action. This was only accomplished only by the incredibly hard work provided by a lawyer the likes of which you would be hard pressed to find anywhere. I cannot make a higher recommendation for a lawyer who will sit down with you and understand you needs and will work tirelessly to get justice you deserve. David will sit down and really listen to you and his knowledge of the law and the courts would be very hard to top. David is a true professional and is a great attorney. I would be in a very difficult situation without David’s hard work and I cannot thank him enough.

I had finally come to the realization that my ugly marriage of 15 years was no longer working out and that it was simply time to move on. The normal worries continued to creep up. Would I be able to see my kids as much as i wanted? How much would i lose in the divorce? I was referred to David by a friend and could not have been happier with the results, from the initial conciliation, to the final outcome. David was professional, honest, and above all else i felt that he truly cared instead of many lawyers who just see you as a case number. He kept me up to date throughout the process and was incredibly prepared for trial. I ended up with a result that my friends told me was not possible, but he his continued resilience and full-on attitude got me majority custody, with less loss capital than i anticipated. I would truly recommend David to anyone in need of a lawyer who does not want to be overcharged or go through the big corporations.

David Gibans was totally inept in the courtroom and his preparation work before trial turned out to be equally bad. I can't know the reason why, but he could NOT complete a thought or follow his own line of questioning in court. He would ask the first question of a witness and then lose his focus and ask no further questions. He started questioning my ex by handing her the wrong document to read. He would take notes as if he had the next question ready, but then just stare at that piece of paper and never think of the question I thought he had prepared. (This was when the judge would tell him he seemed to be intentionally slowing the trial.) I fired him mid-trial after the judge accused him three times of intentionally slowing the trial and my uncle, who came from Maryland to watch the trial, told me at the first break that, "Your lawyer is inept!" Before trial, Gibans had me send him the same documents two, three, or more times when he could not remember them from other times--and, of course, he charged me for each time. He had me prepare document packets to show proof of my ex's lies. I created 20 of these packets, and he told me they were just what he wanted, but he submitted NONE of them to the court!!! When I told him I wanted a refund, he refused and threatened that if I pursued things with my charge card companies to stop payment of just some of the legal fees, he threatened to put a lien on my house--which is now being forced sold because of his ineptness. Trustworthy? NO WAY!!!!! My case involved 3 mental illnesses on the part of my partner and "gay issues," and I tried to tell him many times that it was NOT going to be the simple contract issue he thought. He would not listen to me. He didn't bother to even research the issues of this trial, so his knowledge base was very limited. He was horrid at keeping me informed about anything. When I would ask him how he was going to use those packets or what his plan was for trial, I consistently got "I don't know yet" and/or "I haven't decided yet." David Gibans is NEITHER a capable mediator nor litigator. We got one shot a mediation and I had assumed he would lead the way. He did nothing but stop me from presenting the 5 packets about lies that I had prepared at that point, saying, "Not now." I assumed he had other plans for them. WRONG! I paid him $40,000 to be totally inept! Avoid this lawyer at all costs--literally!!! I would also suggest that you always stick with a lawyer in the same town. I was in Colorado Springs and the judge had no clue who Gibans was and seemed to have that bias about "out-of-town" lawyers--not to mention the extra legal fees in driving time for every hearing and court date.

My partner & I signed up with Robert E Wells in December 2022 on what we thought would be an easy case, contractor got paid but did not do the work. He missed 2 deadlines to the court in February, we had to pay for the time extension. When he was required to respond to the lawsuit in June, he was on vacation, and missed the response resulting in the court dismissed the lawsuit with prejudice. I advise to not waste your money.

Talking with my probation officer prompted me to write this as she informed me how unprofessional his actions were during the case. He completely misinformed me during the court process on several matters. He frequently had to be reminded of the case, even in court I had to correct him. He was more interested in getting paid than properly representing his client. His first impression was forceful but that quickly turned to an aura of laziness, dragging the case out much longer than it needed to be. He had to be reminded consistently to follow through on actions, often doing so the day of or before the next court appearance. I made a poor mistake hiring this highly unprofessional lawyer to represent me.

Julia refused to read the “narrative” statement she asked both parties to complete - which provides the case history and impact on the child. Her report to the mediator/arbitrator misquoted court documents that were provided, had dates that were wrong, and omitted key facts supporting her “reasoning.” The CFI did nothing to resolve court involvement, or improve outcomes for the child involved. I have written evidence supporting all claims made in this review.

Very biased! I wish I would’ve read other reviews before I hired Julia. I was told by my lawyer Julia favors a 50/50 schedule. She was also the more expensive option, over $3000. She only added one day to my every other weekend schedule. And all the lies my ex wife said to her, she took for truth, regardless of the police reports and text messages I provided. They weren’t even included in her final report. Very biased and very unprofessional, she hadn’t even opened the emails I sent to her til the follow up call just before the final report was due! Saddest part is my kids are the ones who suffer from her unprofessional behavior. Good luck to all you men out there fighting the good fight! Don’t give up!! And don’t go with Julia if you get the chance to pick your CFI like I did. $1675 in her pocket, while my kids go without their father.

Like other reviewers I wish I would have read her reviews before allowing her to be added to the list of CFI's that my lawyer's office suggested. Julia is a robot with no expression or thought given to the true well being of the child involved. I was told in court that she questioned my credibility as I had "too many" allegations against my son's father because I told the truth of a history of abuse, drug use and selling. It does not benefit to tell the truth about the other parent. I would have been much better off if I lied to her about what I was dealing with. She even asked him to pull his own police report about a domestic violence charge on his record rather than doing the research herself. When he claimed he couldn't get it she let him explain it away. We were able to obtain the report which spoke of him choking a woman unconscious. She also failed to speak to the girlfriend after me who also experienced domestic violence to the point that she was too afraid to speak in court. If you are a victim of domestic violence DO NOT USE this woman. You will be re-traumatized and be accused of making up allegations. Despite the fact that his father averaged giving away 1 day month out of his 8 she noted that he did not give away a significant amount of time and failed to mention that he has never scheduled/taken my son to one doctor, eye, or dental appointment. My child's father also had a babysitter we knew nothing about and that she never mentioned to me in her "investigation', despite the fact that child care was to be mutually agreed upon. Julia conducted two phone interviews for her "investigation" and took the word of my son's father's witnesses and left out information from my witnesses entirely in her report. My three year old will now be split between households 50/50 even though he has never been with his father that much in his life. She is a disgrace to her profession. DO NOT USE!

He's not even worth the one star. I'm super disappointed and cheated out of thousands of dollars. He refused to talk to me on the phone, so attention to my case only happened by email which then ended up costing me more and more money. Every email he reads or responds to is timed and billed for but with no result. He seems confused about details and even charged me hundreds of dollars to give me answers with paperwork I had already sent him to begin with. His paralegal is no better as she is not at all helpful and downright rude once she has your retainer. Save your money and don't make the same mistake I did.

I hired Patierno and she did not fight to get what was fair nor did she take the time to explain information that I continually asked her about and was confused. In the end, my ex-husband got a large portion of my pension and I got absolutely nothing from him. Since I have a defined benefit pension plan I am not eligible to receive my ex-spouse's social security retirement. When asking how this was fair, I remember her saying "what's the problem?" you get to keep your 401 (k) and he keeps his (401K). I continually pointed out the inequity with the pension plans which she ignored. At the time of my divorce , my ex-husband was a drug addict and was facing jail time for leaving my daughter outside in -12 degree weather. My biggest concern was regarding custody of her to keep her safe, but now over a decade later I realize how she didn't fight for my future. I am now retiring from teaching and sadly facing reduced benefits from my pension and giving it to my ex-husband who currently does not work and is a drug addict. I wished I chose an attorney who could have fought for my rights and future earnings.

My personal opinion is that Ashley Opfer and this firm were incompetent in our case. Ms. Opfer is barely two years out of law school but is supposedly the owner of this practice. Was told that we had a very favorable case in family law jurisdictional issue after I paid them specifically for due diligence on the law. They botched it so badly the judge called the case "groundless" and awarded attorneys fees to the other side. When I complained and asked for our fees back, they dropped the case and woukd not meet with me to resolve. I have since filed ethics complaints with the Colorado Supreme Court. I highly recommend avoiding this firm.

I went to Stowell PC for an initial consultation and was painted a very pretty picture, I was told my case was open and shut and that it should be easy. I asked what a ballpark figure would be for the cost of my child support modification to be done it, I was told around 1800 dollars but that it could be more. I understood this however when the time came for another retainer to be paid I was only given minimal notice to come up with $2,300. If not paid in this short time frame they would drop me as a client. Also all the things I wanted and was told should be easy to get I did not get. There was a slight increase in the amount of child support I received but by the time I graduate college and go through another child support modification I will have just barely broke even with what the increase was and what I had to pay in legal fees. Also I constantly felt like they were on my ex's side instead of mine. Saying "don't you want the father in her life more?", no i don't, that's part of the reason I'm here! And for the record and just so you know since the modification he is still missing days with her and also has not followed through with the agreement of first refusal, he lies to me often. But now I am completely broke and there is nothing I can do about it.

She worked very quickly in her research of all my questions and concerns and was able to put my mind at ease. Ashley was very proficient in vetting all the available options before any decisions were made and was able to clearly articulate to the opposing party what our position was. Ashley always was able to make room at the last minute if I had something urgent that needed to be accomplished. I wished to save money, and not file unnecessary paperwork, etc. Initially, Mr. Goldstein hesitantly worked with me, however we ultimately had a difference of opinion when I did not feel certain motions needed to be filed out of "an abundance of caution" in his words. I have been through the process previously, and have friends who are attorneys. Therefore, due to the fact that things were very amicable, I did not feel "an abundance of caution" was necessary. The response I received was incredibly unprofessional and condescending. I could not believe that someone in his position, who deals with individuals in delicate, emotional situations daily, would speak to a client in such a manner. He browbeat me with motions passed as to how he had the right to proceed in my case how he wished, without informing me or discussing it with me. Essentially, how he had the right to spend my money how he chose, and then ask for more of course. He may be the attorney for someone with deep pockets, who doesn't mind being insulted during a sensitive time, but not for me.

If you are in the need of the professional services of an attorney. The key to finding the right legal representation, it seems to me, is finding a person that is both expertly qualified in the field of law that is the core of your legal issue, and that you can connect with personally. A person you are going to feel comfortable with at not just from a legal perspective, but also comfortable at a interpersonal level of communication as well. In my case after years of fighting with my HOA, I have finally gotten the full support of the local sheriff department. If this sounds at all like the kind of legal help that you are looking for, then. I most highly recommend Peter B. Goldstein Esq. Sincerely, Allan L. P Client

I have had the opportunity to work with Lisa, Don and Brian on various matters. There are only two law firms in the Four Corners I would consider working when it comes to family, custody, criminal or other matters and The Ward Law Firm is one of them. My first experience was working with Brian. Mr Imel is incredibly knowledgeable, highly detailed with his communication and very well respected. He is no nonsense and takes matters very, very seriously. Brian tells you how it is and does an incredible job advocating fact and truth few know how. The results speak volumes. I have consulted and worked with Lisa and Don on many matters including premarital agreements, time sharing and some unfortunate emergency matters. Between the both of them, I think it might be fair to say they possess over 75 years of family law, civil, federal and criminal experience. They are no strangers to extremely challenging litigation where high conflict is inevitable. Though the litigation might be challenging, never once have I seen any attorney from their firm engage the unnecessary toxicity other lawyers try to create. Don and Lisa stay focused, take the high road and maintain the focus on where it needs to be - the client and family. While the firm is not " cheap" to work with, you get what you pay for. If you are in need of a firm who is not afraid to aggressively represent you, one that has credibility and one that can achieve the results you and your family need...Work with them. If it had not been for Brian, Lisa and Don , my family today as it is might be very different. I highly recommend them and issue this review noting that I have tremendous respect for these three professionals.

I would give zero stars if I could. I was supposed to be served with court papers and he emailed me an attachment with an unfinished report without the case number and no court room. It said if you can not make it to court you can attend through WebEx. He sent me to the wrong court room on the wrong county. I still have not been served papers probably. They will not return my calls or texts.

Attorney (I feel embarrassed even calling him that) Rechard Tegtmeier frequently made excuses and exhibited a lack of diligence in handling my case. Throughout the duration of my interactions with Tegtmeier, I found his behavior to be extremely inappropriate and disrespectful. I had to tell him to withdraw and had a different attorney represent me. He consistently came across as rude and displayed a clear disdain towards individuals of color, including myself. Despite my attempts to maintain professionalism and cooperation, I could sense an underlying prejudice in his demeanor towards me. It became evident to me, and subsequently to others in similar situations, that his representation was marred by discrimination against minority groups. I have since learned that I am not the only individual who has felt marginalized and mistreated by Tegtmeier's actions.

I recently went through a company called Marble Law. They assigned Tammy and her team as my representation. At first, they seemed very helpful and interested in helping with my case. After providing them all the information within minutes of their requests and receiving no notice of the information being received, I noticed they were not taking my case seriously. I would call for updates regularly. I would be given updates and timelines that never were met. Maybe it was just poor communication in her firm or maybe it was her team really had no idea what to tell me, so stories were made up to keep me hoping something was going to move forward. When I did call to confront them about what was going on and that the level of communication and unprofessionalism was unacceptable, she immediately sent me an email stating "I understand that you are not pleased with the services you have received from this office. I apologize for the delay and believe it may be best to set you up with another counsel from Marble. You should hear from them soon to arrange for a different counsel to assist you." No explanation on why there was a month-long delay for a simple motion for Contempt of Court to be drawn up and sent for my review, just a sorry and basically I'll pawn you off to Marble and let them deal with it. I strongly do not recommend this attorney or team if you are looking for a responsive and motivated group in any case.

Bonnie Saltzman was the first PCDM I had to work with after my divorce. She did absolutely nothing to help my situation, or that of my children. If anything, she made the divide worse between my ex-husband and our co-parenting, which moved to parallel parenting during her appointment. Bonnie’s actions and decisions were detrimental to my family’s relationship, and I would never recommend her services to anyone.

Make sure you look up reviews from all other sites!!!! This one is very clearly paid off as is Bonnie. She is paid off by whoever offers more money, she openly admits to weed use, misses important court dates. Does not care about the well being of the kids. the kids are now telling us about the abuse they suffered. So sad. She intimidates and lies about the truth. Not sure how she is still licensed but someone needs to be able to be paid off in order to guarantee a win.

Great reviews don’t show up anonymously. All her other sites have less than 2 star rating for a reason. She missed every court date. Literally every one, pushing the dates back even further. Spent hours at one house and only 5 minutes at the other, she had already made her mind up when money is involved, no reason to waste her time. Admitted certain things she likes to do on her own time, which makes sense of all the missed court dates, lied and cheated. Money talks.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
