Keith is a competent and considerate attorney who made my child support/custody case so much easier! I’m thankful for his understanding of the system and those involved as well. He knew what to say and what not to say. Enabled me to take care of what needed to be taken care of. = )

Mr. Griffin seemed to be a very knowledgable attorney, however I would never know because nothing ever really got done with my case. My ex was pro-se and Mr. Griffin still let the case drag on for months, all the while ramping up the bill. I ended up having to get another attorney to get the job done.

She puts her need for Political Power over the best interests of children. If you want to win your case, hire the attorney who is generous towards her campaign contributions, or one that has served as DA at the Collin County Courthouse. Your child's best interests are irrelevant in her court.

Let's review her now as a Judge..Even the Attorney handling our case said we have to watch what we say in court because she is a very complicated thinking person. She was more attentive to looking at her computer during the whole trial than listening to our case. It was obvious she knew how she was going to rule before our court hearing even started. She is Political Gain over protecting children.

Mr. Pennington encouraged me to mediate which is the worst decision I made in my divorce process. I got almost nothing and didn't even have the decency of having state standards. I got custody of my kids, but I'm a woman so it was pretty much a given anyway in Texas. 8 months went by and I was still not divorced. Ended up finding a different lawyer to represent me and I will now have to spend years and thousands of dollars undoing this mistake.

My daughter was in a car accident a while ago. The car was totaled and the child was in pain. I was very confused and didn't know what to do. At that time, I contacted the office of Attorney Won-young Kim through an introduction. The office manager was very kind and reassured me with his definite words and actions, and he is still helping me in a friendly manner. Now I can leave everything to them and continue my daily life.

THE BEST LAWYER HANDS DOWN,amanda was recommended by a great friend of mine we had gone to a couple of lawyers before her and everyone said I had to serve jail time I was charged with a felony drug case 100,000$ bond because I skipped out on probation and had been on the run we went to Amanda just so we could get and estimate on what or how we could resolve this 2 days later i went to see her at the court, 10 minutes later my case was dismissed I was in total disbelief and I didn't even have to see the judge!!! SHE IS A KICKASS LAWYER! She has been a blessing to me and my family! Today I am a FREE WOMAN because of her! and I don't think there's ever enough thank you's in the world I can tell her for giving me my life back!!

Amanda Murphy went above and beyond for me. July 4 2015 i was arrested for: DWI 3rd, Fire arm by felon, and manufacturing and delivery of a controlled substance (1 ounce of methamphetamine). I went to prison 2 weeks later on another DWI. Dallas never filed charges until i was released on parole. Being that was the 2nd time i have been to prison, i was really worried about getting a lengthy prison sentence. Amanda walked me thru every step of the legal process. She found holes in my cases that every other high profile lawyer missed. ( Not going to name them). She told me to be patient and would get me the best deal. She got me 4 years probation. Every other lawyer told me I was going back to prison. You can trust her with her legal knowledge or you can get suckered by all these other lawyers who only want your money. My family and I CAN NOT thank Amanda enough for what she did for me. I would recommend her to anyone who is going through the system. She will walk you through every step and keep you informed of what is going on. Thanks again Amanda, you gave me a second chance at life.

The lack of knowledge and lack of interest in my case when I consulted her had lead me to a legal roller coaster that could have been avoided if she had been more proactive and caring about my situation or just simply she could have just said that she couldn't take my case.

Sally Pretorius had the audacity to altered a Final Decreed of Divorce, by deleting information behind the opposing party that was already agreed and signed by the parties. She did it in a very subtle way thinking it was going to be un-noticed. All her information on google about her passion of helping other women are all BS. blah! blah! blah! Just words no actions. I had a very difficult and unexpected case filed against me and reached out to a family member who referred me to Keith M. Nelson, Esq., Partner at ONDA.  I was nervous and stressed because, although no one ever likes to be in a law suite, life was at an all time high of events and life changes.  Mr Nelson and his team of lawyers were extremely professional and comforting with their knowledge and diligence to protect my interest and legal rights.  His legal team treated me so well throughout the entire process; they helped me to remain calm during this very stressful event.  Mr. Nelson and Paul Hewitt were extremely supportive and provided a beacon of hope when my options appeared limited and the resolution seemed near to impossible to obtain. Me and my husband were concerned about the residual effects of a law suite during this time in our life, but ONDA was able to defend us from an unjust outcome, both Mr. Nelson and Mr Hewitt’s calm and empathetic demeanor offered emotional support to me during this very difficult time. As a woman of faith I believe God placed me in the “Best Hands” He had for me! I am truly grateful for Keith Nelson and Paul Hewitt, they not only provided legal counsel but most important personal care and concern that I needed and will never forget. I would highly recommend Keith M. Nelson and his law firm ONDA to anyone dealing with a family law dispute.  I am thankful to this very fine man, Mr Keith M. Nelson.

Keith Nelson is a skilled talker... His greatest interest is his financial gain from his CLIENTS! Lookout for TONS of BOGUS FEES!!! At $525 an hour, I got nothing more than a decree that is so jacked that I'm having to hire a new firm to fix all the contradictions and go back to court. Meanwhile, my life was butchered in the process!!!

I hired Atty Holland to handle a personal legal issue. She did an excellent job understanding the information I gave her. I just recommended her to a friend of mine and will continue to recommend to all that needs a great attorney. Kevin

I would have given Gaylynn 5 stars had she not completely taken my money and now I haven't heard from her since March 31st. I have emailed, called, and texted and have not gotten one response. We are now in August and I paid for something to be done last year and nothing has been done. Gaylynn has worked with me several times and has always been slow to respond but this time to get completely ripped off by her I am just confused as to why someone would take money from a single mom and not care of how this effects my kids.

I heard about Mr. Carlock and did my research on him on Super Lawyers as well. I set up a meeting and went to speak with him and the first meeting went very well. I was very impressed with his pitch, what he said he could do and how he could help me get custody back for my kids. When we were preparing for court, I had sent him over 70 messages and exchanges illustrating abuse and harassment from my kid’s father including pictures. When the time came for trial, Mr. Carlock was unprepared and did not use any of the evidence I had sent him while the Father’s attorney used their evidence. This resulted in the father getting more time with the kids over the summer and made me and my case look very weak in front the judge. When I asked him after the case why he didn’t use any of the evidence he said “Oh, I wasn’t aware of it.” While his assistants said that they didn’t think it would matter in court. On top of that, I had a credit for a retainer while he refuses to give me back. Even worse, he is saying I owe him money and that the cost for the transcript of the case is more than is left on the retainer. He is essentially saying that he will not give me the transcript until I pay him even more money. Mr. Carlock is a great salesman, but I urge anyone thinking of using him to do their research and do not buy the snakes oil that he is selling. He uses very inexperienced associates to prepare his cases which puts his clients in poor situations. I regret ever going to him and I am worse off now than I was before I went to Mr. Carlock. He’s a very nice guy, talks a great game but unfortunately the results are left to be desired.

Lady that runs the library pretty much always grumpy and generally unfriendly BUT it’s run efficiently, stays clean, rest of the staff is pretty helpful and knowledgeable on where to point you. They are not lawyers and can NOT give legal advise. Dealing with general public can be a handful, especially people constantly on their phones and being loud- it is a library people! Great resources with blank forms for pro se, law books and computer research on Westlaw one hour per day. ALWAYS bring cash for copies, yes they have copy machine. And please be nice to them and stay off your phone while in there. 😀

This is a poor excuse for a man let alone an attorney. he works for the Attorney Generals Office in Dallas County because he cant cut it as a real attorney. he came into my custody case with my sociopaths ex wife and sat on her side of the table cutting up and joking with my ex and her attorney. without knowing anything about the case and the fact that my ex was using the usual tactic of false abuse, he got up in the middle of court and said "NOW THE BAGS WIDE OPEN". he wasn't even a part of the temporary hearing nor had no say so of what was going on. he was there to make sure the child support orders were taken care of. This imbecile came in not knowing anything about my case and effected the outcome of my case. never mind all the thousands of dollars that me and my fiancé have invested in this and that I was the one taking my ex to court for custody of my children because she is a terrible mother. I am filing a complaint with the Attorney General and also the Bar on this Bastard. I would represent myself before I would let this guy represent me.

I last spoke with her on April 28 and it is July 7th and she has not returned any of my calls (I call weekly) and has not returned any of my 16 emails. I have received no explanation, her receptionists say they just saw her a few days ago, and she's never expressed any doubts in taking the case. Hired attorney Karen Burns on October 23,2018. The firm is called Burns Iwuji, PLLC. I was searching for an attorney and found them on, Fathers Rights in Texas website. My mother first spoke with attorney Burns on September 2018, which was I’m assuming the free consultation. My mother met with attorney Iwuji and was charged a consultation fee which was odd because my mother clearly stated she was there to hire them. I did google the firm before we met and at that time they had great reviews. However, both of this attorney will charge for possibly everything they can. Even the air you breath if possible. Attorney Iwuji mentioned that a portal was going to be set up. This was the way of us communicating with the firm and keeping up with charges incurred. The portal was set up a month after we hired them. I never received and invoice from them until June 2019 asking for more money because we had no more funds. First court date was scheduled for Dec; 2018 it was rescheduled. Second court date 2/26/2019, judge gave the mother more time to hire and atty. I was before the judge no more than 5 minutes yet I was charged 2 hrs. Third court date 3/14/2019 we were there maybe 45 minutes I was charged for another 2 hrs. Attorney Burns, constantly wanted to meet to go over our case. Every time we met with her we were charged for 2 hrs. Now, keep in mind we didn’t know about the charges because up until the last time we met we hadn’t received and invoice. I would send atty Burns emails over and over again with no response. If I called the office because she wouldn’t reply and spoke them for like literally 2-3 minutes I was charged $30. I have plenty of proof to show how incompetent this attorney was. Absolutely nothing was accomplished. My daughter is still in an abuse home. I lost money and time form work. I believed and trusted attorney Burns. Now, I truly believe this firm was a RIP off. Unfortunately, I can’t say to do your research before hiring anyone because I did. I lost thousands of dollars and I’ve also lost hope in the justice system. I pray to God every day that he keeps my daughter safe. *We hired them to have a court ordered already in place be modified. (atty made an agreement w/the mother for extended time from March –June 2019) *I have several police reports on mother for not showing up to pick up my daughter. *I have police reports and videos of mother showing up an hour late to drop off or to pick up my daughter. *I have pictures of the physical abuse *Mother was ordered to change last name on my daughter it’s been 3 years and it hasn’t been done yet. *Mother has long history with CPS. *And the list goes on and on. Nice person, believed in me and my story but couldn’t do much. If I asked him anything he generally would say I can’t help with that . I got charged close to 20k but not a single result . He also continues to charge for even one e-mail even if it does not result in anything being filed . I wouldn’t recommend him.

I was referred to Mr. Lamorgese to review a potential appeal of a high-conflict and voluminous child custody case. Before the initial consultation, Brad was able to reach out to the attorneys on file and review the case, so the actual time was spent very effectively, not reviewing the case but discussing the possible solutions. All the notes and suggestions received during the consultation were spot on, and of a great assistance. After we found that the cost of representation is out of my price range, Mr. Lamorgese went far and beyond referring me to more affordable yet still superb firms. I highly recommend Mr. Lamorgese as a knowledgeable professional with great attitude towards his clients.

I paid $250 to consult with this attorney. The zoom call lasted 15 minutes when I was assured the appointment would last for an hour. He was very dismissive and told me that I would have no success in my case after skimming my materials. I then asked if he may be able to send me similar cases he worked on that have been publicly posted ( most lawyers do so you can reference their work) and he said he would have to be retained to do this. I did not get a proper consult and he should have refunded the consult fee as it only lasted 15 minutes.

Did not show up to court. Lost all our paperwork and emailed copies 3 times. Resending not a big deal but annoying. Communication through out the whole process was horrible. Now we lost the case and it's very hard to over turn. He has promised to return our money in payments. First check was denied by the bank. And now he says I forgot. I have the emails to prove it.

Cynthia Allen is the worst nightmare I've ever experienced. She represented herself as being knowledgeable of the law and a top attorney in her field. Only later to find she’s incompetent, misconstrues facts, and has limited ability to enunciate words and use them correctly. She was never prepared for trial, and such a joke that opposing counsel and my ex could be seen laughing at her. During trial, opposing counsel had to inform her what a "De Novo" trial was, as she clearly didn't understand the purpose of why we were there. She incorrectly called my daughter at least 10 different names and after being informed, said she didn't care. She called her a boy who was 8 years old when she was 12. She cross examined my ex with inaccurate information that if prepared; she could've correctly presented. There were times she’d ask during court if she’d done certain due diligence on him. Isn't she the attorney, I didn't know? My ex laughed as she cross examined him. To make matters worse, Kim Cooks, judge on my case was clueless about known public facts, despite trying to appear as if she was. Shockingly, Kim asked why I wanted my child to attend the most expensive private school in Dallas. My child has always attended private school, and if I did, which I didn’t, where’s the relevance? I’d hope Kim wants the BEST for her child too as any mom would. She made one ruling having no clue about tuition at top private schools in Dallas. Kim’s child has never attended ESD, or EDS as Cynthia calls it, but constantly argued ESD is the most expensive school in Dallas. Facts prove it's NOT. I paid tuition so rightfully I'd know. Kim, with her sad egregious ways, reduced tuition from being an equally shared expense, and ordered me to pay the majority, relieving my ex of paying any after this school year. Although Cynthia was aware of facts, she refused to speak up, as Kim is her very good friend as she states. During trial when I informed Cynthia of lies she had proof of I’d previously provided, she got angry, packed up her unorganized belongings, and left me to defend myself without court being adjourned. Cynthia is so disturbingly unorganized that in a trial to recuse the judge, she had the unmitigated gall to accuse me of lying saying I never sent an email expressing my concerns regarding the judge on my case initially. How odd I received a reply from her Paralegal acknowledging receipt of it in Nov. I produced the email in trial proving the date and time sent. She said she had no correspondence from me since Oct. How ironic since my first joke of a trial with she and Kim, who's equally embarrassing, was in Jan. I fired Cynthia in March 20'. So from Oct 19' to Mar 20' she has no correspondence from me? Hmmm, that’s perplexing because she’s billed me as if she has. It would take beyond eternity to detail the horrible and unprofessional service I received. Before I conclude, due to Cynthia’s lack of work on my case, billing for unanswered emails, and work not done, I didn’t remit payment for my final bill. She neglected to perform duties I hired her for as again, she walked out on me during an active court proceeding leaving me to defend myself. She's the epitome of laziness, and the poster child for sloppiness in the way she carries and presents herself. I admit, I fell for her charades for a while, afraid, not knowing the legal system or what to expect from proceedings. Thankfully God and his wisdom allowed me to see through her. It should be noted if she’s the world class attorney she claims to be, she’d know when she speaks to discuss her "Motion to Sever (sev-er)", and NOT "Motion to Server (Serv-er)", as she confidently and INCORRECTLY pronounces it, she'd be able to articulate judicial terms accurately. Save yourself time, your sanity in dealing with her delusion, and most importantly your money as you'd be better off representing yourself. It’s true she could care less about you, and only bills to collect from you, and not deliver for you.

This will be a detailed review so if you need a short one, do not hire Holly to represent you. If I had not checked and had my attorney partner to proof read, she would have ruined my finances and given one of my cars to my ex-wife. My attorney partner and her attorney father were appalled at what I went through here. I ended up correcting the entire petition myself with the help of my partner after I was still finding material (not just grammatical) errors after the 5th version. First: Mishandling of material information The most severe failure here was—despite me having provided material information twice, the second time in writing and organized so it was copy and paste-able—Holly still made severe errors. She assigned one of my brokerage accounts to my ex-wife that belonged to me. She put one of my cars’ VIN numbers as the VIN number for my ex wife’s car I was giving her. She wrote the same account number twice but as if it was different account types. Had this gone to court, it would have financially harmful or caused more delays and costs having to get it corrected. It was an agreed divorce and this could have caused my ex-wife to think I was trying to pull something over on her, which would have ruined the delicate peace we have. I had to ask Holly 5-6 times to correct something else each time I reviewed another draft. I finally just ended up doing the key points myself, which defeats the purpose of paying someone two thousand dollars to do it. It took about 6 editions ultimately to get an acceptable decree because there were so many mistakes made inputting the very clear information I provided to Holly. Secondly: Failure to protect non public information. In the first draft of the final decree, Holly had left in information of her other clients in it instead of mine. This included their phone number, address, employer name and address, and partial social security number and drivers license number. There are laws about attorneys needing to protect and secure such information. Now I will worry forever about Holly doing the same to me with my information. Third: Grammatical Errors. Holly makes regular grammatical errors even in what was intended to be a final draft sent to a judge. From spelling my name as Wants, to putting my child’s initials as EAM when it’s AEW, missing periods, punctuation marks, missing or misspelled words. This is all in the first draft of the final decree she mailed me and was in the some 5th draft she wrote before I decided to correct it myself. Lastly, When it came time to file Holly said we could e-sign the decree, it was filed and rejected because it was e-signed. Holly ranted and raved rather unprofessionally about the Judge. This cost me another $40 in printing and more hours wasted syncing up with my ex-wife an hour away in Fort Worth to get it signed. For an attorney who claims to do all this electronically I’m surprised by her claims she didn’t know. I got her the signed paperwork two days later, and had to send three emails following up nearly a week afterwards to get her to confirm it was filed. Then another email a week later for her to bother uploading the signed decree. I had paid Holly her fees in full as she does flat rate before we started on the decree (which is reasonable of her I might add) however had I not already paid in full, I would have fired her and hired another attorney. I didn’t only because I had already paid in full and it wasn’t until then all the severe stuff came up.

Holly worked with me on a particularly difficult litigation with my ex-husband. By the time we got to trial, Holly knew my case even better than I did. She was thorough and relentless in trying to resolve issues outside of court. Unlike with other lawyers I've used, I never felt that Holly suggested a course of action just to increase her billable hours. In fact, she did just the opposite and refused to engage in letter wars instigated by opposing counsel. I highly recommend her as a family lawyer and, in fact, have.

I don't think I have ever had anything good to say about a lawyer, especially after the 2 years of Hell that I was dragged through in a divorce not of my choosing. Facing a biased judge, an opposing attorney who would stop at nothing, I had gone through 2 attorneys (just hiring my third) in a small town where I did not live. I called the Frankel firm looking for a bankruptcy lawyer, thinking that was my only option to get out of this unfair mess. The receptionist referred me to Mr. Stillman and I left a message on his voice mail, fully expecting that he would never call me. He did call, within a couple of hours. I was able to talk to him and he listened..then he gave me the most cogent and honest advice I have ever received from an attorney, not just on bankruptcy, but on the divorce proceeding. I tried to pay him but he would not let me! Unbelievable for a lawyer! The advice he gave me helped me advise my new divorce attorney and ended up with a re-consideration hearing in the divorce where the judge reversed his previous onerous judgment! I did not have to take bankruptcy. Thank you Ken Stillman!

My critique is precipitated by a significant lack of professionalism I have observed in his practice, both in terms of his interactions with clients and his approach to legal tasks. The efficiency with which Attorney Schorsch handles legal tasks leaves much to be desired. A proposal that should ideally have taken a week to draft has spanned over six weeks under his direction, and it has yet to be completed. When queried about the progress and expected completion date, he tends only to offer excuses instead of concrete timelines. On a notable occasion, a provided deadline was missed without any reasonable explanation or subsequent revision of the timeline. This disregard for efficiency and punctuality is of grave concern, as it portrays a lack of respect for clients' time and the professional standards of the legal field. Moreover, I spent an inordinate amount of time - ten hours, to be precise - in Attorney Schorsch's office, during which he exhibited a propensity for excessive, non-constructive conversation. His conduct in this situation leads me to question the value and appropriateness of his time usage, especially considering the charges associated with such meetings. In the interest of full disclosure, I must note that I am not a client of Attorney Schorsch. Instead, my interaction with him came in the capacity of opposing counsel. While this might raise questions about bias, I believe the need for professionalism and efficiency in the legal profession transcends any personal affiliations, and this critique is grounded in that perspective.

My case was a child custody case. Being a Father in Texas and trying to get custody of your children seemed to be an almost impossible task. The Texas court system is NOT too favorable to giving Father's custody, even when the children want to live with their Father. Ashley was highly recommended and turned out to be the attorney we needed to help us successfully navigate our difficult, if not impossible, court system. She is very knowledgeable, professional and courteous. She was confident, comfortable and performed exceptionally well in court. I consulted with this attorney and decided not to hire him. Two things that turned me off. First, he kept pressing me to come in to the office and engage with him and his firm. He didn’t seem interested in my questions or in earning my trust that would lead me to come in on my own without his pressure. Secondly, I mistakenly shared with him the name of another attorney I was considering and he did nothing but bad mouth her and criticize her and her practice. Both of those were a huge turn off from someone who espouses his faith as mush as he does. Wolf in sheep’s clothing…..

He made it clear about the things I had rights to and did't have rights to. He didn't sugar coat anything. When I would call in or had questions he would either answer right then, or call me back that day to answer any questions I had. He was very understanding about my situation and a pleasure to work with. When we closed the case, he did in fact get me everything he had promised and more. What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
