Lori was great! She was highly recommended by a long time client/friend when my wife files for divorce . Detail oriented , always available to chat with and always gives the right advice and actually cares . I had 2 prior attorneys (law offices of Leon Bennett and Law Office of Teresa McNamara) both terrible . Lori is the real deal. Don’t get me wrong they all charge but would you rather have someone that charges and doesn’t do the work or have Lori on your side ? Thank you Lori

My Jessner was incredibly professional, asstute and effective as an attorney for my ex-husband. I saw the review my ex wrote and think it's only fair that I respond also. My ex trashes people whom he does not want to pay, he's a bully and please do not judge Mr. Jessner on the 2 star review; at the time he was representing my ex, I'd wished Mr. Jessner were MY attorney. I hope this site takes down the review by my ex, Mr Jessner in no way deserves anything but praise, I know what's it's like to be trashed for no reason, there was NO reason for that review.

Incredibly smart, patient, and hard working. Helped me immensely through a very difficult time. Very good in court and in pleadings. A strong advocate but doesn't fight just for the sake of fighting.

Greg is a good person who was used as a mop by opposing counsel. He had a hard time handing my lying ex's lying attorney and froze in court and in communication with opposing counsel. He does not have the ability to negotiate a settlement with difficult, high conflict divorce. He also missed court deadlines and wanted us to go easy on the ex because she was female - even though she and her attorney pulled every dirty trick possible. He was in over his head, had no idea what to do and did not take the legal recourse needed to get important information. I found another attorney who led well and was able to handle the ex and her counsel well.

My husband used Nancy during his divorce with his ex. Nancy did a great job keeping costs as minimal as possible (still high but she tried to be reasonable). She communicated to his satisfaction and gave him very logical advice. She explained his options with detail and explained the differences in cost per option. Although his ex got quite a bit, Nancy made sure that the ex didn't "rip him a new one" like she was trying.

Sheila is the attorney i should have retained first while going through my divorce. She is very knowledgeable about family law and was able to explain things to me in a 30 minute call that my previous attorney could not make clear to me in a year! She is responsive and helps me understand what my options are and the impact of each option.

Clarissa was fantastic to work with and was able to delve straight into the matter of the case, which dealt with a restraining order. She was very thorough in contacting and working with the people I gave her who were able to provide testimony in my defense. The paperwork she prepared was persuasive and strong. She helped me and my witnesses prepare for court and was a strong presence in the courtroom. My only criticism was she sometimes missed small details, like typos in paperwork, or forgot to ask the judge to order the plaintiff to pay legal fees (I reminded her). In the end, the plaintiff lost the case and is now in debt to Trope & Decarolis, the law firm Clarissa Lopez works for. Would work with again.

Bogus billings, terrrible desk side manner and zero attention to your case. When you ask questions, he doesn’t have an answer about your case. Probably because he has no idea what’s going on. When you point errors out to him, he berates you. And after you’ve paid him half your savings, he tells you that if you’re not happy with him, you can go somewhere else. Glad I did.

I’m writing this post in case it could save someone from having a similar experience that I had as a former employee. In 2018 I worked for Michael Whitmarsh as a legal assistant, and it was the worst work experience I have ever had in my life. Working under Michael Whitmarsh made me realize the importance of working in a respectful, communicative and healthy environment for my quality of life. The sheer disrespect and aggression that Michael Whitmarsh displayed towards me on the regular deeply affected me during my time there and thereafter. I have always had positive relationships with my employers and peers, and to this day, Michael Whitmarsh is the only employer I’ve ever had that left me with almost exclusively negative memories. I’m grateful that I mustered the courage to quit when I did and the lesson I learned to never let anyone treat me like that again.

Horrible service. Felt like he was on my husbands side the whole time. Wasted $5000 on nothing. I had to keep calling to see what was happening with my case. Could not confine in him. Charged me for ridiculous work, calls and emails. I ended up going back with my husband and stopped the divorce/case. I suggest a real lawyer. My husbands, Gille Kaye Law Group, PC . Pasadena CA. Great people nice and actually wanna do the work and help. They even gave back my husband his half deposit back $2,700. Unlike these people rip off, there only in it for the money.

I was referred to Michael in 2014 by my business lawyer when my wife of six years filed for divorce, demanded half of my business and an incredible amount of spousal support. I did not have a prenup. My divorce wrapped up at the end of 2015, and Michael recently circled back to ask for a review of my experience working with him. I told him that I would be happy to because of how much he helped me. The best part about hiring Michael to do my divorce was that he accurately predicted how long the entire process would take, how much I would end up having to pay my ex in spousal support, and how much the whole divorce would cost. I didn't want to hear it, but I'm glad that he told me straight. I am a small business owner. I have 5 employees who I've had for years, and Michael knew an incredible amount about business bookkeeping and accounting that saved me a lot of grief. Most of all, he calmed me down when my ex-spouse threatened my business or made unreasonable demands. If it had not been for Michael, I'm not sure that my business would have survived the divorce. Thanks again, Michael.

I went in and out of the courts all by myself with no luck for 2 years. Served her several times and even though the mother never showed up, things didn’t change. They FINALLY helped me get custody but by the time I got it, it was too late. Mother took my daughter who knows where. Detectives are still looking for them. It’s been over 14 years since I have seen her. The family court system is broken, you really DO need someone by your side with experience navigating it. I only wish I knew about them and called earlier. Maybe I could have gotten custody before she disappeared. And they did it all for free.

As if it wasn't hard already being a victim of domestic violence, there Levitt & Quinn is to make it an even more grueling process. I applied for help over a month prior to my final court hearing. After jumping through many hoops: 1) traveling to and applying directly at the office 2) submitting additional paperwork that took much effort to collect detail behind 3) several delays in correspondence from L&Q and 4) needing to spend money on requested documentation, I wasn't able to even land a consultation. They were misleading with hope throughout the process. They could've told me "we are unable to help at this time," which would've sufficed instead of wasting the time and energy of someone who is already suffering.

I wanted to write this review to show my gratitude for Mr. Land and the Land Legal Group that helped me with my DCFS case. I was in a very sticky situation and DCFS was not on my side. I was calling around for a dependency lawyer and was referred to LLG. From the moment of the first consultation, (Mr. Land was my third consultation) I knew this was the dependency lawyer that I needed on my team to fight this case. After explaining my situation, Mr. Land already knew what I was going to need to have a chance at prevailing. Mr. Land immediately made feel like I was going to have a fighting chance to be heard in court. If you have ever had to fight with DCFS, or heard the horror stories, you know that it will not be a fair fight. As the case was progressing one charge/allegation after another kept getting dropped until they were all eventually dropped. I know that if I didn’t have Mr. Land and LLG on my side that many of those allegations would have stuck and I would be in a totally different situation today. I know that I’ve read this on one of Mr. Lands previous reviews. “If you can afford him, he’s the guy you want stand next to you in court room.” That always stuck with me, and I hope it does the same for you.

I can only speak for Burton Mitchell, as I have not utilized the firm for other matters. Having gone through a few estate firms, Mr. Mitchell is the foremost expert and legal scholar in estate planning in So Calif. A prior firm not to be mentioned interviewed for a full page spread in the NYTs botched so much. Fame doesn’t equal knowledge. I switched and am forever grateful. Knowing Mr Mitchell’s character, he would NOT associate with other attorneys unless they are of similar aptitude. Legal matters, always tortuous. Judges or jurors decide whimsically especially in California. Any disgruntled matter should be directed to the TRIAR OF FACT, not councils regardless of firm, that has to deal with oftentimes a disinterested jury pool. That is a variable no one has control over. My overall observation, reasonably priced TOP NOTCH FIRM. From one high level professional to another, different fields but astute observer. Thank you for taking the time to read my snapshot

Do not hire this firm. They turn my divorce into a blood bath. They lied and fabricated at evidence and made my ex wife’s life and misery for no reason. They caused me to go broke and my ex-wife as well. All they care about is profits profits profits. They don’t care about what’s in the best interest of the family. They don’t care about what’s in the best interest of the children. All they care about is profits profits profits. SIMPLY THE BEST FAMILY LAW FIRM!!! I have worked with Trabolsi Levy Gabbard LLP, in particular Avi Levy, from the very beginning of one of the worst times in my life-divorce. Avi was not only an advisor in my legal matter but a shoulder to lean on and provided me with the most accurate information as it relates to my legal matter. He was honest, upfront, appropriately aggressive when necessary, hard working, available when needed, quickly responds, treated me as more than a client, comforting, expert in knowing and understanding the law, very highly regarded by his colleagues, and goes above and beyond the “call of duty.” His knowledge and confidence put my mind at ease at a time when it was very needed. Avi’s reputation in and around the family law community is unsurpassed. From the time i entered this period of my life, I realized that when i made my first court appearance and speaking to other family law attorneys that Avi was at the “top of his game.” Furthermore, Mr. Levy, holds many accolades within his expertise and has proven in front of his colleagues, judges, etc to lead the way in his line of work. In addition to the aforementioned, he leads California in legislating on Family law issues, which proves to me as a client that he is highly recommended by people in the family law community. The term that is used is,”He is a lawyer’s lawyer!!” Avi demonstrated professionalism in dealing with the various judges, attorneys, and other parties involved in my case. It is clear to me that he is highly respected by ALL individuals whether it be forensic accountants, judges, opposing counsel, appraisers, etc. It is apparent that when other people in different lines of work comment positively about your attorney, you realize the person you hired!! Lastly, Mr. Levy’s partners and associates have also provided the same service and level of confidence Avi has provided. Larisa, Jaimee, Nathan, Yael, and the entire staff at Trabolsi Levy Gabbard earned and proved that they are SIMPLY THE BEST FAMILY LAW FIRM in Los Angeles!!! I will continue to spread the word about this firm and continue to refer them business should someone i know who is looking for an EXEMPLARY family law firm.

24 years ago I was referred to Karen Lane law office by my new doctor that informed me I was 6 months pregnant sending me home with prenatal vitamins and a refund for an abortion. I never wanted children, never felt qualified to be a mother but there I was 6 months pregnant... Adoption was my only option and the only right option for this baby to be able to thrive. With Karen Lane representation, expertise and guidance, I was able in less than 3 months find the best parents I could ever have hoped for. Karen Lane worked her magic and delivered a miracle. Now 24 years later, I am amazed to discover this beautiful amazing young woman I gave up for adoption professionally handled by Karen Lane to this wonderful loving and caring couple that gave her everything I never would have been able to provide. None of this would have been possible without Karen Lane dedication and commitment. Thank you.

My husband and I were referred by our doctor to Karen Lane. I later learned that Karen has an excellent reputation in the field and now understand why. She made the process as fast and painless as possible. Only four months after hiring Karen, a birth mother responded to an ad she placed for us. Karen arranged for her to relocate to California for the birth. Karen eased all of our concerns about meeting the birth mother and working with her through the delivery of our baby and our adoption. The birth mother frequently told us how kind Karen was to her, and Karen was certainly patient with us. We wanted to maintain communication with the birth mother even after the adoption. We therefore appreciate the fact that Karen has been willing to keep in contact with us and the birth mother and has exchanged photos and medical updates for us. I work with many attorneys in my field, but none have the professionalism, expertise, and compassion that I have seen with Karen. Thank you, Karen, for helping us complete our family.

WARNING: My experience with Santa Monica Adoption Attorney, Karen R. Lane, was absolutely horrendous. Let me preface by stating that I am writing this review to save other adoptive parents the pain and suffering that I went through with this lawyer. This is not a vengeful review; it is a factual review. Simply put, she collected approximately $6,000. from me then immediately disappeared on a vacation for two weeks. Karen Lane made promises that she did not keep, she showed no interest in answering my questions and, straight out, requested that I not call her. Her conduct was unprofessional, dishonest and condescending. I have since connected with others, adoption professionals as well as adoptive parents, who have had similar (and much worse) experiences with Karen R. Lane. After terminating the relationship a few weeks in, Karen R. Lane refused to refund any of my money. I suspect that more people are not speaking out because or this lawyer's intimidating persona, not to mention the length of time she has spent in this profession and her connections within the adoption community. Steer clear, is my advise.

Didn’t even bother to look up my father’s case we literally paid him 1000 for him to see my father in person and demand more money. He did not look up his case or offer any type of consultation on how we can help my father. BEWARE of this awful unethical attorney that’s ok with scamming families out of their hard earned money.

Joel assisted me with my divorce and my violent ex trying to get his rights back. When Joel decided to take on my case it was based of an extensive consultation. This man is not looking to represent anybody just for the compensation. He is selective and genuinely invested once he decides to represent you. He made this painstaking process easier and I felt supported legally and as a mother protecting her children. Time went by (about a year) and he checked in on me and my kids. Passing the bar is one thing but having a heart and a passion for what you do is another.

However, he makes too many mistakes: 1. doesn't understand the case in details although explained. 2. turn on his cellphone while talking to the immigration officer 3. lose the case. I ended up replacing her because of my anxiety and wanted to be kept in the loop. After 5 months, It did not seem to be progressing so I decided to find someone more aggressive. It's now 2015, I ended up in Pro Per, I ran out of money but went to Trial and got decent results being that my X is an attorney. Now, in retrospect I wish I would have stayed with her, and here's why: The Clerk for the Judge at my Trial helped me, he was so kind and also, during the Trial won the Award for the Employee of the Year for the State of California. His first comment to me was, "Oh, your attorney was Ms. Murawski, she's my favorite attorney!". I told him that I had changed because I did not think she was doing enough; his comment "Less is sometimes more". I now have all the work from both of my former attorney's and just did a little discovery myself. The questions that Ms. Murawski were asking were spot on, my second attorney did not even go down the right path, not that she wasn't very capable but, Ms. Murawoski had a 6th sense that I now know was spot on. She does not insult, hit anyone over the head, is kind even to unkind people, a much better way to defuse a terrible situation. she seems low key but don't mistake that for a lack of intelligence, she is smarter than anyone I know. Divorce is risky, even if you're in the right you don't always win but, if you must, I'd go back to her in a split second. I have to say ,the endorsement from someone who has seen it all was about as good as it gets. She's lovely, my only issues were not enough hand holding and explanations. The hand holding, leave for your therapist, I don't know how to get the communication piece. And seeing both Attorney's product in retrospect made me wish I hadn't been so needy!

This attorney was fine providing updates and with the paperwork. At the hearings, she was in over her head so I had to replace her with someone more skillfull and was successful with my case. Atttorney provided good suggestions and would be a good behind the scenes person, just would not recommend to do anything involved in a Court setting.

Mr. Acevedo representEd me in 2 cases, 1 in Riverside and 1 in San Bernardino County. Me. Acevedo went above and beyond. At first it took him some time to get the ball rolling but once it started rolling, he was on top of it. I had previously enquired with other Attorneys and their fee was around &10k to $15k per case with half down. I am not rich so I couldn't afford it. I noticed Mr. Acevedo handles the cases himself. He went to Riverside Court about 4 times until my case was resolved and 5 times to San Bernardino County. He was patient and consistent. I will Referal Mr. Acevedo to all my family and friends that need his services because I know he will get things happen. Thank you Mr. Acevedo

Very unprofessional and he only looks at you as if you were a dollar sign. Jermey Kline, told me to get a restraining order against my live in partner (for no reason) just so I can and allow her back into the house only if she signed an affidavit which we prepared and that it would protect us. I thought it was a great idea and agreed. it worked only until the judge found out that Mr. Kline prepared the affidavit which she had to sign, himself, instead of allowing her attorney to do it, so the afidavit was deemed invalid, the restraining order and the entire case turned against me. I lost the case plus my pockets were emptied by Mr. Kline himself..

Jeremy did absolutely nothing for me except drag my case on for years, run up billable hours with no end in sight and despite me doing the accounting forensics to show blatant fraud by a former partner. He cost me more than I was claiming was my rightful share. Perhaps the very 1st call I received from the senior partner Mr Mendel asking what I was worth should have been the warning sign of the culture of this firm where I suspect the goal was to get a good portion of my net worth.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
