I applied for the Human Resources Assistant position with Stinson, LLP in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in August 2024. I was called the next day after applying via their online job application on their website. My initial telephone interview was with Chelsea L. Clennan, Director of Human Resources for Stinson, LLP, who's located in their Wichita, Kansas office. Chelsea was immediately complimenting me, telling me that any employer would be lucky to have me, that my skillsets are perfect for the role, that they would move quick for me in the recruitment process, they would make same-day job offers if needed-- immediately raising red flags for me that she was not a genuine person. She immediately moved me on to the second and final stage of the hiring process: the final interview with the hiring manager, the HR manager of the Minneapolis office-- both of whom reported to Chelsea. My suspicions of Chelsea would prove correct when, all the sudden, after letting her know after my final interview on Friday afternoon that I did have another offer, which I'd received the day prior, Chelsea responded to my email quickly, letting me know her and her hiring team would meet on Monday. In her email to me, which I've attached, she even told me her team considered me a top candidate. Monday came and went-- nothing, crickets. Tuesday, I received the attached screen shot email, letting me know they'd meet later that day. I replied, thanked her for keeping me in the loop, even further expressing my gratitude for keeping in touch with me and making me feel respected and valued. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday -- absolute radio silence from Chelsea L. Clennan. I sent a polite follow up email Friday afternoon-- again, I had been ghosted. Not a single reply or word from Chelsea or her team ever since -- despite her shtick of "you're a top candidate" and "we move quickly." I shudder to think how Stinson, LLP employees -- whether in Minneapolis or Kansas -- are treated if Chelsea treated a job applicant -- me -- with what I felt like was pure garbage and disrespect. Personally, I do not recommend Stinson as a place to work based on my experience as a job candidate and how I feel I was treated. When people like the human resources director show you their true colors-- believe them.

I walked in alone to a hearing riddled with anxiety and uncertainty, with no legal representation. Not knowing what was going to be my outcome, especially over a situation that should not have even been brought to a level where court would have been involved, I requested a court appointed attorney. I have never lucked out so much in my entire life than I did that day. Stinson Law firm just so happened to be providing pro bono work that morning and took my case. The two attorneys I worked with not only helped me feel validated in my disbelief that I was even there, but also were the most knowledgeable powerhouse of representation I could have ever asked for. If I were to sum it all up in 3 reasons why I would recommend them to anyone, it would be: Top notch negotiation skills, an unmatched knowledge of the law surrounding my scenario, and for being the most personable, down to earth people, to have the pleasure of working with.

Patrick Burns helped me with my divorce. He kept me calm, and helped me understand everything that was going on. Even when I became very emotional, he was able to keep calm, and remember to focus on my child. His assistants and other attorneys in the office were very understanding and kept me informed as well. I would highly recommend Burns & Hansen for any legal issues. They are wonderful, and human!

I wanted to share a thank you for the genuine commitment to me as I went through my divorce. When someone, like yourself, makes sure to understand a situation and provide counsel, solutions, and comfort it makes all the difference. I needed confidence as I was pretty beat down at that point and you helped me have that. It was important for me to let you know that. Gratefully!

My experience with David runs counter to Laurie’s. I went through an amicable divorce recently and from the very first call with him I had concerns about keeping costs down. David kept a detailed log of time and never seemed to ramp up costs. In fact, he discounted a small amount of time because we were starting to exceed our higher cost estimates. David did a good job of balancing minimum required “lawyer stuff” with watching out for my rights and counseling me on protections I could take. If you don’t want to spend a lot on divorce lawyer fees, make an effort to get along with your soon-to-be ex... or better yet, don’t neglect your marriage in the first place and stay married.

I hired Jane Van Valkenburg at the end of my Custody Establishment case for the trial only. She asked for a $5000 retainer and because there was only about a month to prepare for trial she told me she would be asking for a continuance to allow for negotiations and preparation of possible trial. When the court denied the motion to continue the trial Jane told me she was going to ask the court to reconsider and then she was going to withdraw as my lawyer with hopes of preserving an appeal. She did withdraw 2 days before trial which left me completely in the dark and set to represent myself Pro Se in the trial of my life( establishing custody of my 2 1/2 year old). Jane withheld all of the paperwork and evidence submitted to her by the opposing attorney. I went into that trial alone with no idea how much of my $5000 retainer was to be returned and no evidence or information from the the opposing attorney. Jane actually called my phone leaving a message while I was in court fighting that trial Pro Se. I can’t believe this woman has a law practice. She was so unprofessional with no compassion or concern for her clients case.

I needed a divorce attorney, and someone recommended Mark Gray. After meeting with him, I knew he was who I needed. My divorce turned out to be more protracted than expected. We kept pushing for a settlement resolution, but we had no cooperation from the Petitioner. It turned out to be quite a battle. I don't remember how many Motions we had to file on various issues. Eventually we had a trial date set, and finally we got it settled on that day just before trial started. But we also had post decree motions later regarding custody, etc. The more protracted the battle is, the greater the legal fees. But Mark Gray did not overcharge me. I found out later that my ex-wife's legal fees were five times greater than my legal fees! I am so glad that I had Mark Gray to represent me, and help me understand the process. He was easy to work with, and he is a very smart guy.

Hired her for help with divorce/custody proceedings. Was very responsive and attentive in the begining. As the case progressed, she was less and less engaged in working on my case. The opposing counsel was quite aggressive and I suspect this had alot to do with her lack of engagement as the case progressed. I would do some calling around and research on child support information to help offset time and cost, but she didn't seem to care or want to do anything with the information I provided. The opportunities she did get engaged, she spent time playing phone tag with the opposing attorney/ legal aid, when I would have rather she got the child support case infront of the judge. At one court proceeding, I remember the judge addressed her and the opposing counsel and said that they should "stop wasting these clients money and wrap up this case." My funds were depleted long before I got completion on my case, even though she initially said it was so simple it could be wrapped up in 3 months. Ultimately she lost her zeal to represent me and dropped me 30 days before we had to go back to court. Had to hire 2nd attorney who not only had to file paperwork that she didn't do, but was able to get my divorce/child support proceedings completed in 3months, where I had been working with her for 9 months and had nothing to show for her services.

I hired Cory at the recommendation of another lawyer friend. After our initial meeting, we discussed our strategic options and he followed my direction to the letter. He always took the time to explain options and ensure that we were both on the same page when it came to the direction I wanted my case to go. Now that my divorce is final, I would without hesitation recommend Cory Gilmer to both men or women who are seeking legal representation at the end of their marriage.

I can only guess that the fact that Cory is in court generally twice daily and not able to personally call right back may have led to a less than A+ review. My experience has been lengthy and quite the opposite. He has gone so far beyond the call of duty that I do not think most would believe me and I know I am not an anomaly. We did not know each other I got him blindly out of a book during one of the storms of life. He told me our choices and helped me decide. He even told me when he thought I was letting emotions rule and every time between 10 years ago and now when I have talked to him and sometimes it has been hours. The bill must have been lost in mail. Find me another like him because I would take 10 if I could afford to. There are not many people I respect to the degree I do him at every level. Person, Profession, and do one of the hardest jobs and never taking it out on others He did not lie and fill me with expectations and it hurt. But so much less than the truth did coming from the courts. Cory tells it how it is and when you want an attorney if you prefer they tell you that was not dog poop you stepped it but rather an exotic mist then fine. Cory told how it was. I knew what my choices were I would recommend this man over any attorney bar none but he only does family law. Huge plus for that but I wish he did estates and stuff!! No relation. Not solicited. I just was shocked to see a somewhat negative review when he could have charged me twice what he did and he still didn't. I had now known him 10 years and respect him more now than ever.

Cory Gilmer appears to mean well, but his skills are mediocre at best. He is poor at returning calls/emails and does not seem to understand who the client is. He tends to be reactive rather than proactive and allows himself to be outmanuevered by opposing counsel. Also his lack of knowledge on financial matters is disturbing.

Ann was great to work with and I would highly recommend her for any family law matter. She is very intelligent, knows family law well and was always responsive to me if I had questions or needed advice. If I left her a message or emailed her, she would get back to me within a very reasonable time period. I knew she had court appearances, other clients, etc. and would respond as soon as she was able to do so. I was very impressed with her skills in dealing with the opposing attorney and the Judge. She was respectful of them, yet asserted herself if the need arose. It appeared that she was well respected in the legal community. I would highly recommend her to any one with a family law matter and definitely would use her again if I needed a family law attorney.

In my opinion, this lawyer is NOT trustworthy at all. We had agreed on a flat fee for paper works and requests. Now I know why this law firm has a 2.9 review. people, believe the reviews! Pro: Sarah, the Paralegal, was such a nice person, great conversation and timely response. Now lets get to Mr. Nate or Nathan Con: 1. he autocorrected my name to "peru"... okay, I can see that happening. 2. I painstakingly filled the form, got to the phone call and this is how it went He was talking about will, trust, power of attorney etc. (keep in mind he already knows my family's worth), and like educated people that we are, we had questions (plus, he was speaking fast too, so I had to halt him to repeat some things). Please ask me why after the 2nd question this "fragile ego entity" decided to tell me I was arguing with him and if I wanted to argue he can't be our lawyer. I was stunned (like where did this come from). And my husband was like :we are just asking questions because we are not the expert and wanted to understand. And he literally said (and I kid you not) I'm not used to people asking me questions right out of the gate ( "sigh in my ancestor's language). Anyway, I just told him, "if you already feel this way just after two questions, how would we be able to ask you questions in the future if we don't understand something. I don't think you are the best fit then". Needless to say, he was like "metlife will find you another lawyer". Dude, I spent hours going through lawyers, no one did the work. Anyway, whatever is wrong with this Nate, he needs to go get some "communication 101" course on his learning path.

Always taking "vacations" with your money. Stalls, does a lot of "busy work" and slick talking to make sure it looks like he's doing something. Commits perjury overall good lawyer if you are a deadbeat trying to make it look like you are not. So really 3 stars. but 1 star for honest parents.

Hello I'm a single father and the twin cities. My son's mother has made it very difficult for me to be in my son's life. I speak from experience. Travis is a true gladiator! When representing his clients he spares no expense when fighting for you to be in your child's life. It is an honor to recommend him at the highest levels of expectation. Fortunately for me I have Travis on my side who has years of practice in the justice system, and has the experience and not just family law, business law, and criminal defense law with a appellate court practice. Literally at One stop shop. He takes the time to explain best possible outcomes, as well as the realities of least possible outcomes. In addition to this his retainer and hourly rate are very reasonable. I strongly recommend his services and legal support to anyone in my network in need of the best representation in the legal market. Thank you for reading!

Sue Wilson duped me, simply put. She convinced me she was very caring, apparently only so that I'd hire her. She finalized my divorce refusing to correct errors she'd made in the decree, and handed away all of my rights while ignoring what I told her I needed. Do not hire her if you're a woman.

Kellen represented me in a very difficult divorce/custody battle. He was thorough in examining the evidence and although he has a calm demeanor, he was tenacious at trial. He was very compassionate with me. He was able to provide what I believe were the most favorable results in my case. I would recommend him and would use him again.

just wanted to drop in and say that I saw your response on someone asking about a vehicle forfeited from a 2nd DUI. you went in really hard and absolutely unprofessional saying how they have done it 100s of time and just got caught and how they need A 12 STEP PROGRAM. all this judgment from someone who gave you 1 paragraph of information. they didn't even say details of the charges, and you were just a total B (can you guess the last letters?) I have no idea why you are a criminal defense attorney with such awful 'bedside manner'. as a CDA you should know many people are WRONGFULLY being charged every day. It is a serious issue in Minnesota. You disgust me. And I really hope people see your response and don't go to you. THE JUDGEMENT like you're some queen looking down on those lowly people who 'commit crimes'. You absolutely should switch careers. Sincerely, someone WRONGFULLY charged with a DUI, I WAS SOBER. I will win my case i already have a lawyer with compassion. Anyway, your response is the first I've ever seen from a CDA that is so despicable and judgemental. Shame on you. How about you make a mistake and then see how you're judged. Anyway just wanted to drop a note to say you're a disappointment to the profession. Obviously, you can't get a good lick of clients since you're using this platform to get a little side cash by answering questions. Retire. Go find a new career. Shame on you. Dont bother responding.

I know maybe two or three dozen people -or more - who have had legal advice and help from Tricia Dwyer, for family law and criminal legal problems, and other sorts of messy legal problems, and we all can’t say enough good things about her. Go to Tricia’s website because I know she’ll post a few of the entirely unsolicited ‘Thank You’s!’ she’s gotten from her clients.

I was referred to this group for a special needs trust. They basically charged me over $450.00, didn't listen, made assumptions, and finally said they were "too expensive" but have to bill me for the first hour. Needless to say, I ended the engagement. I would not recommend this law firm to anyone unless you're interested in wasting money on expensive, inexperienced lawyers that don't take their time to review your request but still charge their high rate.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
