Chad helped me get thru my 4th degree DUI without jail time and was able to get me a plea agreement that was much less severe (driving with a BAC over .08). Chad carries and presents himself well and his vast experience as a former prosecutor was a huge asset for helping me get my case adjudicated. Thanks Chad!

After some research, I chose Chad Throndset to represent me and my children in a difficult divorce. After everything is said and done, I'm very happy I chose him. Mr. Throndset was prompt in getting back to me with any questions/ concerns I had via phone or email. He was trustworthy and helped me see the "big picture" in what I wanted from my divorce and outcome. He put my needs and the needs of my children first. I felt he was upfront and honest throughout the entire process. I always felt at ease in the courtroom with his presence, he was strong and knowledgable. Ultimately, I received what I wanted to accomplish from my divorce. I have and will continue to recommend Mr. Throndset to friends and family. He's outstanding!

He is not very talkative but is a very good attorney. Would like if he would respond to emails more as I live out of state and have him representing me. He definitely does what he says he is going to do. He also works hard to try to get the best results that he can get for you and your case.

This law firm is in desperate and has lost their best attorney in John C. Lillie, III. It's rare that a law firm will sue their clients who have spent 10"s of thousands of dollars with them after only a couple months, but this is who this firm is. The owner will try to bully you and tell you that you don't know what you are talking about, but the next stop for me is the board of ethics. This firm has hurt me and my case beyond all measure. My advice is don't go with a firm that is so hard up for cash that it's the first order of business is to charge you first and ask questions second. Stay away. You'be been warned.

Dear Reader, Choosing a lawyer in a divorce is a difficult decision, the outcome of my divorce effected 1) the custody of my two kids, and 2) my financial well being once the dust settles. Most lawyers I interviewed wanted a retainer "NOW!" I went into Lisa's office and I was an absolute mess, being on the side of not wanting a divorce but being forced to file for divorce was the most wretched thing I have ever had to do. I cried my eyes out in her office and explained what was going on, I honest to god was treated like a human and not a dollar sign. Lisa treated me as a friend and heard me out, keeping things very professional reminding me to take some of the unnecessary emotion out of the equation that could effect the outcome. How you handle yourself during this time is crucial in divorce, especially when your family custody and financial well being is on the line. In my divorce things started out civilly with my now Ex wife, then once money, and her "rich" aunt got involved the claws came out... Lisa was very attentive to the other lawyers antics and she had some excellent alternatives which I never considered when breaking things down and trying to ultimately compromise. They are not in the game of checkers, it is a game of chess. We ended up going to mediation and the mediator "Dolan Mediation" that's where Lisa found alternatives to me having to give my pension away, the mediator realizing that my medial benefit premiums were not my income (Difference of me paying 400 a month in spousal support vs 0) offering to pay for my children's hockey as a bargaining chip. I got 50/50 custody of my children (wish I had them 100% however I want what's best for the kids). We have all heard "You get what you pay for" and it holds true with Lisa, she is a very fair priced attorney. I have heard of people going with the cheapest lawyer the find and at the end of the day my children, finances were worth the insurance of having a experienced lawyer who is going to give you the best possible result. Nobody wins in divorce, its not a glamourous thing, nobody goes into marriage with the person they love the most looking to get divorced. Life happens and sometimes you are dealt a bad hand. The last year has been the worst year of my life times a million. I have started to rebuild and life has gotten substantially better. After compromising the financials, I didn't have extra money as most people don't after divorce. Lisa worked with me and gave me options of a payment plan as well as waiting until I refinance my house so that I could pay off most of my debts. I wrote this review because Lisa Elliot did a great job and the outcome that was most important to me came to fruition. That being said during the worst time of my life, I had someone who worked very hard for me and treated me with compassion and looked out for the best interest for my children and myself. I also want to let people who are faced divorce: With time you do heal, things get better. My best friend gave me a saying that helped me out and it is "The sun will rise tomorrow" meaning no matter what sh** you have faced and no matter how bad things get, the sun will rise tomorrow. Pray about it, make good decisions (don't bury yourself in the bottle), and try to take the high road... You will never regret taking the high road, things come back around on their own to people who lie, cheat, and are dishonest. I hope this review helps, I am sorry for what you're going through, remember "The sun will rise tomorrow" Thank you Lisa, Regards, Daniel H.

I ran into trouble a few months ago. Dealing with false allegations was anxiety-provoking to say the least. Not use to these kinds of situations I did not know who to call and where to start to defend myself to serious charges alleged against me. I shopped around and with a help of a cousin from a different state (a lawyer also), we decided to go with Ram Law and I am glad we did. Attorney John E. Roach was fantastic from start to finish in representing me in civil litigation. He himself called me the day after I reached out to him about my case. Always transparent and was always available through email and phone. John would always respond in a timely matter in regards to my case. He would always say after every contact with him to "call him if anything happens." It really made me feel less anxious and more confident in a very stressful situation. He is a gentlemen and has a way with words that is very precise and accurate as well as effective in court. He showed his class-act and skills when we had to go to trial 2 days in regards to my civil matter. He made the opposition look foolish in court. John always prepared me for the worst case scenario but in the end we won! Case dismissed!

We had the pleasure of working with Joseph Flanders. My husband recently has been diagnosed with PTSD. He had not worked in almost a year. We were trying to get me on my husbands IRA account so I could get money out of his IRA He was not able to answer simple security questions to take money out to pay off some bills. His Financial Institution said we needed to make me his guardian. Which he did not need. I reached out to Joe to see if he could help us. He agreed and we are so glad he did. He was very compassionate about our situation and bothered that they were not allowing this. He said a Judge would not sign off on a Conservertorship because my husband did not need one. He suggested making me his POA. That didnt work. He kept at them. He kept telling us I am not giving up! His hard work and determination paid off. Thanks to Joe we will not lose our house and are able to pay off bills that accumulated during this time. He actually cares about his clients. Thanks Joe!

Overbilled us. Heather did not seem very knowledgeable, and we were charged double for when she had to ask her "boss" Lyndsey for help. Heather didn't seem to know a lot of the evidence very well but charged us as if she'd been scouring it for days. She made us pay for her time for her to correct her own mistakes. And then, when it was all over and we got a small refund for our second retainer (she burned through the first one very quickly), the following month, even though the case was concluded and nothing else had transpired, she sent me an email claiming that we owed more money but that her boss decided to waive it. How magnanimous. When I asked her how we were still being charged for her time when we hadn't had any business with her since the refund was issued, she never responded. Definitely wouldn't use them again or recommend them.

Horrible quality and even worse value. I was out of town for a week and they sent me a "hurry up" email. They charged me $40 for sending that. I said yes, we should talk; when are you available. They charged me $40. They sent an email with 2 available times. They charged me $40. I chose one. They charged me $40. For no legal advice, it cost $160. The legal advice was worse. I switched to another attorney who caught several issues they had missed in just 1 hour.

Represented a family member of mine as opposition in a family court case and was not only unprofessional but made decisions and gave legal counsel that was detrimental to our family but mostly to my nephew, a child. She brought tactics into the courtroom that were in direct contradiction to what family law’s goal is, which is to put the child first. I found her to be unsuitable as an attorney, was crass, and frankly, pulled some ugly stunts that only made her look bad. Seeing as she was working pro-bono, her lack of professionalism and care for the child’s best interest, lined up. Not only would I not recommend using her as your attorney, I also hope you never have to deal with her as representation for opposition. Now we’re having to deal with her associate, Michael Ortner, in an appeal case that is completely unnecessary. Was, and still is, genuinely a drawn out and horrific experience because of Theresa Bofferding and her disregard for human beings.

Ms. Wolter treated us with respect and kindness. One can feel like they are caught in a maze when trying to sort out legal issues and when dealing with the court. Ms. Wolter smoothed our way for us and left us feeling well taken care of. To her, we were not a number or anonymous people. We were individuals with a problem that she promptly solved. Jim did not provide me with all of my options as his client. I was unaware of a Karon Waiver, I was the primary income earner, and I was never presented the option of having an "expert financial review" or "vocational evaluation" done on my Ex. I spoke to another Attorney who said I should have these two things done, and when I said that is what I wanted, my case was resolved very quickly and signed by the Judge about 3 weeks later. My case is many years old and an ugly, non-stop custody battle. Michelle his paralegel and Brian Sobel at McGrann & Shea have been wonderful to work with. Brian was and is, unflappable! Aggressive when necessary, and seeks the truth. He is kind and compassionate about the importance of the parent/child bond and will advocate for that. He has a BA in psychology and was on the Cornerstone board and brings that knowledge and experience to the case. Alienating tactics of parties will not be tolerated on his watch. My friend Carrie K. recommended Brian Sobel to me when my ex maneuvered through fabricated events "temporary custody." Brian Sobel is methodical in his approach. It takes a long time to move through the family court process but I can sit back now and relax. A highly skilled professional will argue the law and fight for me to see my kids. I highly recommend Brian Sobel for contentious custody cases especially when opposing counsel is outrageous.

Johanna Clyborne was called as an expert witness by the opposing counsel in my divorce trial. I was pro se (representing myself) and I am not a lawyer. She was supposed to opine on my military pension. She instead offered speculation on my security clearance and nature of separation. She is not an expert witness in either area. Opposing counsel and Johanna tried to pull a fast one. They violated the MN rules of civil procedure by not introducing a her expert witness report prior to trial. After more than an hour of testimony - which I objected to on the grounds of her lack of qualification, speculation, and failure to follow civil procedure - Johanna was dismissed from the stand and all her testimony was stricken from the record. The judge chastised opposing counsel for her lack of competency - which I thought was generous as it seemed very calculated to me rather than legal bumbling. This shameful performance should be cause for Johann's sanction and / or dismissal from the National Guard as she clearly is using her military position as an officer for profit. She is doing this unethically as there is no way she can establish herself as an expert in military pensions (which our judge agreed was true) and apparently pulls this sort of move on veterans as a form of character assassination regularly. @mnnationalguard you paying attention?

Dealing with custody matters are tough enough to go through, time is of the essence and you need your hired team to represent swiftly and aggressively so that life can move forward and you can rest with your family again. You add trusting and spending your hard earned money only to end up picking the wrong lawyer to represent this sensitive matter is a total setback for the children first as well as the parents. Katelyn was very unprofessional, lazy and very inexperienced in the compassion department to say the least. I simply asked her to get the ball rolling & keep us updated after we paid the retainer fees and submitted her requested paperwork because we hadn't heard back. She quickly responded with a few lame excuses followed by "We can just refund your deposit ". My gut feeling was not to work with her from the start it felt like we were just a number on the pile and that she was very green and not aggressive driven to help get the job done, turns out by her response above, I was correct. I'm not really a review type and don't waste time on it but thought this would help others when looking through the billions of lawyers in thier time of desperate need. - The Glass family

I came to Sharon for a legal help with my divorce case. It was supposed to be an easy process as we have no children and I was voluntarily waving all my marital rights in any marital property we had. The process turned into a shit show when we started listing all the marital assets. The counter part was not agreeing to list it all out even though he was getting awarded all the rights. He just didn’t want it on the paper. This caused lots of problems. Throughout the whole process I felt safe and secure thanks to Sharon’s expertise and her deep knowledge how to call out on a B.S. in such professional way that was leaving the counter attorney in ridicule. Which I loved! Sharon is not just an attorney, she educates you not only on the process but in detail walks you through all possible scenarios and outcomes. She is patiently holding your hand through tough times and helps you feel and know you are not alone. Sharon no words can express my gratitude to you for being there for me when I needed you the most! Thank you and best / warm wishes to you. Merry Christmas (soon to be) (smile face)

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
