Helena Pesa is a pleasure to deal with and yet stands up for her clients. She's knowledgeable, spent a lot of extra time with me and always followed up. I've found that a lot of attorneys don't communicate, which is very important to me and that's why I really liked Helena Pesa - she kept me informed of what was going on. I give her my highest recommendation.

When faced with a family crisis, I consulted Donna Drumm, because she is compassionate, understanding, and without hesitation, went that extra mile for my family and I, which in this day and age, means a lot. knowlegable, sweet, and so understanding of my family situation with a solid foundation in the law, really put my mind at ease. I can't thank her enough. All lawyers should take example from her, because besides the law, she's a human first, and puts others before herself.

Caroline was recommended to me after a bad car accident by an attorney who is a personal friend. She promptly visited us at our home and spent the morning getting details about not only the incident, but about us and our lives. She was kind and friendly. Her questions showed that she was an expert in these cases, and we hired her to represent us. From that point forward, she was unfailingly responsive to every issue that came up, especially medical bills and dealing with a difficult insurance bureaucracy. She handled all of the paperwork and reporting that was related to the accident. She always kept in touch and always responded promptly to us. We were impressed with and pleased by her work and by the settlement she obtained for us. We would absolutely hire her again if we needed legal representation.

I met Mr. Chanin by chance. My Attorney could not appear in court with me and sent Mr. Chanin to represent her in stead. Mr. Chanin is very knowledgeable, experienced and patient. He explained how the law works and what to expect. He handled people well including the Judge. He got the point across in just a few words. I am amazed with his achievements in such short period of time in court. I strongly recommand him.

Jeff has been my lawyer in a drawn-out contentious divorce proceeding. Four years after meeting, he's still helping me handle details from the divorce. Through it all, he has been focused, calm, and a tremendous advocate for me. He's helped me understand the state law, as well as what makes for an appropriate negotiating position (and what doesn't!). I appreciate his sense of humor, fair rates, and responsiveness. He also has a great executive assistant who is professional and helpful. I strongly recommend Jeff as a divorce attorney.

Mike Saglimben handled my divorce case. Was awarded permanent alimony, $80,000 life insurance policy, house to live in, and assets divided up. Mike fought hard to take care of my needs like it was his own mother. It can be a very emotional process to go through and understand. The way the court system functions is confusing and stressful. Mike was there every step of the way trying to help me understand this process. Picking a divorce lawyer can be hard and choosing the wrong one can send your life down a rough road. I always believe in reading reviews on a company’s to help find the real story. I hope I can help someone make their choice in picking Mike. He will fight hard to get what you deserve. My fears about being able to pay her bills and enjoy her retirement are over because of Mike. Thank you!

Scott represented me on a custody case after being chosen as my assigned counsel by the Family Court. Although, I ultimately chose not to pursue my preferred custody arrangements by having my case proceed to a trial, instead settling the case for the time being, from beginning to end, Scott’s presence in my case made a dramatically positive difference both in and out of the court room. Prior to Scott being assigned as my attorney, I was represented by three other paid attorney’s who over-charged, underperformed, and actually contributed to influencing the stressful nature of a custody proceeding by their inability to empathize with the stress- inducing circumstances of the case, exercise patience, or consider my wishes above what they thought was best for my case. In contrast, with Scott as your attorney, you will be paying for (or in my case assigned at no cost) an attorney who is of unwavering integrity, exhibits steadfast patience, and always willing to place himself in your shoes when times get tough in your case. Uncomfortable, intense, and enduring emotions are central to the majority of Family Court Proceedings. Litigating a custody case is an experience than requires far more than an attorney with years of experience in a court room or an inflated ego. It requires an Attorney who is able to relate to the human element of the case, and be a source of wise and compassionate support while simultaneously contending with the legal component of the case with talent, skill, and ability to negotiate. Scott embodies this balance of empathy, knowledge, and expertise. I say with confidence that anyone who decides to retain Scott as their attorney will be stronger and more properly prepared to both fight and tolerate the litigating of their legal case. Considering this attorney was my assigned counsel, he was ‘underpaid yet over-delivered.’

David Warren, partner at Montalbano, Condon & Frank, PC, in New City, NY, is an excellent litigator who successfully defended me when my ex-husband sought to have my child support obligation to him re-calculated based on his request that my imputed income be increased 250% to nearly $100,000.00. A former stay-at-home mom for over 14 years, I received excellent representation from Mr. Warren who thoroughly prepared me for cross-examination in Court and deftly handled my case with up-to-the-minute knowledge of relevant case law. David Warren knew specifically what information to look for and knew exactly what questions to ask my ex-husband during cross-examination. Mr. Warren was eloquent, efficient, and comprehensive, with complete command of the facts. An excellent communicator, he succinctly and effectively laid out the facts of the case to the judge. Through David's efforts, the case was wrapped up in an extremely timely manner, with an excellent outcome. Should new post-judgment matters arise in the future, I will definitely retain David Warren again.

I had the good fortune to meet Mrs. Levitan when she and my mother, Dr. Jeanne Pizzo, were working with the New Democratic Coalition. A few years later an "Rx Drug Abuse Issue" led to my own brush with the criminal justice system and Mrs. Levitan and her associates handed it brilliantly. I did what I was mandated to do and, consequently, I do not have ANY criminal record at all. I learned from my mistakes and am now a successful career English educator, complete with a PhD from Mrs. Levitan's alma mater, NYU. I recall observing her in Court. Now that I've been honored by my colleagues as a "Master Teacher" and "Teacher of the Year" several times, I KNOW what peer recognition feels like — and that's what I felt when Mrs. Levitan was arguing a case. She negotiated with the DA's office and then negotiated some more and achieved a plea bargain (Disorderly Person) that was a galaxy away from the original charges, provided I did what I was mandated to do. I did and I can honestly say that without this outstanding attorney, I would have had a Felony record and forever have been ineligible to obtain teaching or administrative credentials. Inspired by her example, I've always out my students or the teachers and administrators I supervise first, ahead of the political miasma the DOE and it's inept Chancellors prefer. Mrs. Levitan taught me me to stand up for children as she does for her clients. I did counseling internship at Covenant House and used the research and reporting skills learned as a Journalism major and a reporter on one of the "top 10" circulating dailies to work around the system. I'm proud of my work in counseling, teacher education and the teaching of English. None of his would have been possiblewithout Mrs. Levitna;s intervention

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
