I retained Annelisa Smith in 2016 after I found out DSHS was investigation my sons mother and her husband. We went to court days later and I won sole legal custody at an immediate danger hearing. Since then my son has been with me 365 days a year. Over the last 8 years I have been to trial with Annelisa 3 times all with favorable outcomes, and the last time in court was one sided in my favor. It seems she always know the best strategy for each situation. She fought hard to give my son the life he deserves.

I cannot say enough good things about McKeanSmith. From the moment I reached out, they were very responsive, provided exceptional guidance, clear communication and a genuine sense of care for my situation. I worked directly with Mary and Stephan, both of their expertise and professionalism were evident at every step, making a complex and stressful situation feel manageable. Jacob and other support staff were very helpful as well. What truly stood out was their commitment to understanding my needs and advocating for my best interests. They were always available to answer my questions and provided detailed explanations, ensuring I was informed and comfortable with the legal process. I am pleased with the outcome of my case and I am deeply grateful for their hard work and dedication. If you're looking for a knowledgeable, trustworthy, and compassionate attorney, I wholeheartedly recommend McKeanSmith, and in particular Mary and Stephan.

If you are considering hiring C.J. Graves as your lawyer, I’d like to share my troubling experience working with him on a parenting plan modification which would result in a child support modification. Now, keep in mind, I have sole legal custody of my son. Unfortunately, C.J. satisfied all of the opposing party's requests for the provisions in the new supplemental judgement. Nothing we discussed and initially agreed between parties when we “settled” out of court was included in the judgement, except for the 50/50 that I agreed to. The opposing party submitted the judgement that they drafted as final. C.J. submitted the response which was disregarded by Judge Bailey and he signed the opposing parties draft as final. This did not include ANY of the agreed upon/revised provisions that we discussed. C.J. found out about this, called me and emailed me and said he wasn’t happy with the new judgment. However, he signed it without my knowledge and approval. From there, he was not able to discuss the damaging and inaccurate statements with opposing counsel. Not only did the child support modification not include the private health insurance I pay for my son, he also allowed the opposing party to include close to $800 in health care related expenses. He flat out told me he would get this fixed. That never happened. He didn’t even get the other party to agree to edit the start date that the new parenting plan started. This resulted in a 3-month retro for the other party- which was a lie. Either C.J. lacks knowledge of basic information on how to modify a child support payment and/or the ability to properly represent a client. How are basic, fundamental, and true facts not incorporated in a new judgement when you have a lawyer representing you and these were specific things I had to ask him to change? It appears that C.J. was very helpful in allowing the other party to achieve what they wanted. So, in essence, C.J. did not negotiate ANYTHING on my behalf. He did not do the work that I paid him for (negotiating and representing me) because the judgement says it all. This resulted in an inaccurate monthly child support payment, and C.J. knew it. There are additional factors that are influencing my rating and decision which I prefer to leave outside of this review. However, one of the most outstanding is his response time. I would not hear from him for 2 weeks, if not more. Part of his communications said that we shouldn’t “push it” or “upset them in any way,” if we wanted them to agree to consider changing anything (to the true information). This was concerning to me because C.J. constantly told me that the opposing counsel didn’t call him back or reply to his emails. His inability to communicate with opposing counsel set me back and put me in a very compromised position. C.J. was hired to negotiate and represent me. Unfortunately, I lost more than what rights I went in with, and he is very aware of this. At minimum to have the health care expense I pay for my son included in the child support calculator. I have always maintained health insurance for my son. Uninterrupted medical coverage. The lack of timely communication left me wondering for weeks if anything was happening and or going to change. He also made deceiving promises about outcomes that were valid and realistic. I walked out losing and 100% unsatisfied. This was a clear-cut case, and C.J. did not do his job. I truly felt neglected and that my case was not a priority for C.J. He was not able to achieve anything for me and the final judgement contained clauses that were never agreed upon. He was not able to negotiate anything for me. He even stated that in his conversations with opposing counsel, “We simply could not reach a resolution as to the issues”. Simply put, the other party was able to create a judgement that included everything they wanted (that was not agreed upon) and C.J. had no power to negotiate it.

C.J. Graves and Jaqueline Swanson-Graves are hands down the most thorough and highly educated team. They hold the bar of ethics extremely high and treated me with the upmost care and respect. I have 110% trust for the way they handled my case. C.J. Graves took my case on a Thursday, studied it over the weekend and won for me that next Tuesday. I described him as an angel with blazing swords. One could also call him a peaceful warrior, for every action, decision and advice he gave me was in the theme of being peaceful and winning without throwing mud. I am forever grateful that I had the honor of being represented by C.J. Graves.

When it came time to call around for divorce attorneys, they all had a relatively common refrain: essentially, "abandon all hope and resign yourself to eternal suffering--you're ****ed." With the notable exception of Jessy from Hotley Law! When Jessy returned my call, she came PREPARED. Wanted all the details, listened extremely attentively, and laid out what the legal strategy, costs, benefits, etc were in proceeding. I can't thank Jessy and Solveig from Hotley Law enough. They handled all my questions, took care of the paperwork and any potential loose ends, and turned, well, let's be honest, a not-so-great experience into a 5-star one! For reals, thank you to Jessy, Solveig, and the team at Hotley Law from me and my kid for helping us get past this chapter and onto to the rest of our lives.

Andy Newsom and Jessy Morris have helped tremendously with a very complex high stake, high emotion divorce and appeal case. They have been extremely kind, patient, thorough and realistic. They are both very knowledgeable and personable. They are also easy to understand and have offered me a great deal of help, hope and peace of mind. I would absolutely recommend both of them to anyone seeking legal advise/ counsel. They are honest genuine and upfront, which can be extremely hard to find when seeking legal counsel. Every person I have ever spoken to in their office has always been a positive interaction. I have worked with several different attorneys and law firms over the years and these guys are by far the best I have dealt with!

Erin O’Riley is an outstanding and very professional attorney. She was really patient throughout my whole divorce process and always protected my rights as a legal immigrant and permanent resident. In addition, she came up with elaborated strategies and after the final stretch, we ended up with a fair and positive outcome. I would recommend Erin and Gevurtz-Menashe 100 % without hesitating. I recently worked with Lee Ann Donaldson at the Nichols Law Group and I would recommend her to anyone needing this type of legal representation. She will aggressively pursue your claim to its fullest, while also treating you with great care and compassion. I honestly hope you never need her services, but if you do, call her right away. My only regret is that I waited a couple of weeks after my vehicle crash before contacting a lawyer. In hindsight I should have called & hired her immediately after. When you are injured and dealing with doctor appointment after appointment, the last thing you want to be doing is talking to any insurance reps. Just hire a professional right away. Lee Ann is the consummate professional in her field.

William took a $75 dollar consult fee from me and barely reviewed my case. Didn't ask any questions and then said it wasn't a strong case. I was seeing a dentist in Longview wa for a span of 5 years. They failed to treat. Failed to diagnose two cavities (Both in erupted wisdom teeth). WE ALL KNOWthat leaving cavities in your mouth for extended periods of time CAUSES infection, gum disease and loss of healthy teeth. This violates the standard level of care of a dentist in WA state under RCW 18.32.020. It is a dentists duty to diagnose and treat your issues BEFORE the infection, pulling of crowns and not being able to FEEL the left side of my face since I was their patient. A 5 year span with a dentist shouldn't result in your situation worsening!!! Not a very in the KNOW how on medical issues if you don't know this... maybe he needs to find a diff practice area.

Facing a lawsuit from a debt collector was incredibly stressful, but contacting Chris Mertens was the best decision I made! Chris took on my case with great professionalism, compassion and provided invaluable support throughout the process. He not only alleviated my concerns but also counter sued on my behalf. As a result, the debt was dismissed, removed from my report and I will be receiving compensation for my distress, which will cover his fees as well. I want to start by saying I didn't hire this attorney. I could not make it to that point because she kept cutting me off and was in a hurry. I realize people are busy and do not want to give their time for free but you cannot hire an attorney if they are not willing to know what you're calling about. Its apparently all about money with this person and not helping you through your legal issue.

Now Brad Miller is questioning my mental health because I posted what my paralegal Nicole told me about how this firm runs. Because I posted an honest review Brad Miller is trying to retaliate in my current custody battle. If you really want to stick it to your ex and you want that feeling that you beat them, this is the firm for you. This firm is effective! They will bend the truth for you in court and in numerous superfluous memos. They will bully your ex and drag out the process to ensure that your ex suffers. In fact, they copied me on an internal communication which showed that they will even lie to each other within their own firm. Now, when you come out of the divorce, they will have taken everything from you financially, but who cares when you succeeded in making your ex suffer and that their tactics make thing so toxic that you will hardly be able to co-parent with your ex in the future. To ensure this process drags out as long as possible, they will neglect to let you know that your ex has made offers to settle. For over two years, SKH will make no offers settle with your ex and they will encourage you to not accept any offers because why do that when they can make more money taking this to court. They have so many cases going to court that the judge rebuked SKH for delaying court for 4 months because they had so many court cases booked, but the judge can’t actually do anything to stop these grey area tactics, so it gives you more time to bully your ex! This firm will back you up and encourage you to take your ex for everything. And while this won’t let you move on with your life, who cares as long as you get to falsely believe that your ex is suffering more because of it. Thanks SKH! I don’t have anything left to pay you with anymore, but at least I can feel like my ex suffered.

I am a retired businessman. Robert Scherzer is the worst employee ever. Robert Scherzer heads my list, as the most horrible person I can imagine hiring, to represent me in a legal matter. Early on, in my custody hearing, Robert complained that he doesn't sleep well at night. I figured out his problem. He doesn't sleep well at night because he sleeps all day in court. I also asked him if he would take my direction and ask the questions that I wanted him to ask. He agreed, but failed miserably. Despite his encouragement, that I had a 75 to 85% chance of victory, he lost. Then, he informed me that WE may have left ourselves open to some opposition attorney fees. I am thankful that I fired him and represented myself, in the attorney fee hearing. I think I was infinitely more convincing than he would have been and was able to limit my losses. After this debacle, I asked my 90 year old mother to describe Robert Scherzer's performance. Her one word response was "PANIC". I completely agree. I also sincerely accuse him of excessive billing, for his ridiculously poor services. No stars! Refund owed! Richard

Robert is the best attorney you could possibly hire. He is compassionate, empathetic, a great listener, and very calm. My case was very complicated and there was only one case in the entire country that paralleled that of mine. He researched and consulted with many attorneys as well as constantly keeping me abroad of our circumstances. He is kind and knowledgeable and fought for me every single minute of every single day. I would not wish divorce on anyone, but if you find yourself in that situation, Robert is the one you want to go to. He is very well respected By his colleagues and even fellow divorce attorneys. And his assistant, Kelli is as equally kind and compassionate. If Robert were not my attorney, he would be my friend. Well, I will actually consider him my friend. Because he helped me turn the worst situation of my life into something I can cope with.

I retained Robert in January 2016 to help me win custody and as much parenting time possible of my young son. We've been working together over a year now, and I can't imagine having any other attorney on my team. From the start Robert encouraged me to take the high road against my ex-husband. Our legal strategy focused on how I had always been and would continue to be the primary parent, and not on debasing my ex-husband. This felt good to me because it honored my ex-husband's role in my son's life and was consistent with my personal values. We stayed the course over 12 months, through hearings and a deposition and finally 3 days of trial. Robert's calm and thoughtful legal advice never wavered from our initial strategy, and it was clear to me from the judge's response and verdict that it was the right strategy. We did win everything we asked for, and I am eternally grateful that Robert was my attorney in this case. I still call him to talk through challenging situations with my ex-husband, and always feel better after I do.

Very happy to have used Gregory Gudger for my recent divorce. These things are tough for everyone, and Greg stayed focused and was extremely helpful in helping me craft a fair, equitable, and compassionate settlement...for both parties. I know that my ex-spouse would also agree with this assessment. Even though it was a non-contested proceeding, there were still a lot of moving parts that had to be dealt with, and I wanted someone who would help me make the outcome fair for us both. My ex and I are still great friends, our new lives as seperate people are working out great, and I owe Gregory's sage advice a great deal of the credit for making this happen. Side note: My will also had to be re-written after the divorce, which I was able to sail through with Gregory's help. Done and done. I highly recommend Mr Gudger, if you're looking for a committed, fair, knowledgeable attorney who will listen generously and advise honestly!

Our family has relied on Mr. Gudger for most of our legal needs, from fighting housing related issues to creditor lawsuits. Mr. Gudger took on an old creditor that tried to take everything we own. He found a loophole had the lawsuit dismissed, saving us $100,000. The investment we made with Mr. Gudger was worth it. And, over the years, he has advised us with positive results. No lawyers are perfect, though some might think they are. Sometimes you have to pay to find out there's nothing you can really do. But, even that advise is valuable. I refer Mr. Gudger whenever I can and have recently sent two friends to consult with him. He's accessible, down to earth and is a fighter. I'll go into court with Mr. Gudger any day.

In the eleven month period of Mr. Gudger as my attorney I'm in the same place as I was at the beginning of my child custody case. Mr. Gudger was at first, for a couple of months in seemingly helpful, yet there were things that just didn't seem accurate that he was telling me around my case. He didn't seem to know my case, or my name even, until I was beginning to show frustration from me leaving voice mails when he was not in and it would take days to finally reach him. He did not provide me with monthly invoices for services rendered, instead it was a telephone call requesting more funds but to no explanation of what for. I personally felt no reassurance for the last six months of mr. Gudger as my attorney. He failed to provide, a note of leaving my case of any kind yet he insisted he was no longer my attorney. I came to him in hopes of some justice to my case . I am still scheduled in court in January with him as my attorney but to my surprise he let me go with not so much as a phone call, email or written statement. I also paid a deposit for a court session to mr. Gudger for a court appearance that never happened which he just kept, and now he doesn't respond to my phone calls or emails.

Jon worked on multiple cases for me and my family over the course of three years and he consistently delivered top notch results and service. He was thorough, knowledgeable, responsive, trustworthy, and compassionate. In my first experience with Jon’s expertise he crafted a 16 page memorandum for a hearing. The document deftly and accurately combined facts of the case with a solid argument supported by law, and helped to establish the successful trajectory of the custody case into the future. Over time Jon proved himself to be very knowledgeable about family law and highly resourceful. On numerous occasions he identified weaknesses in the work of other attorneys. He knows the law. Jon always responded quickly to phone calls and emails. His responsiveness and unwavering attention were reassuring and supportive. His impeccable attention to detail was a result of sincere compassion. I can say with 100% certainty that he truly cared about me and my family. At times he even provided information, resources, and advice on how to handle some matters on my own in order to save money. With his help I was able to handle many aspects of making changes to child support. I cannot overstate how grateful I will always be to Jon for his dedication and his work. Time after time Jon proved himself to be not only a highly effective and dependable attorney, but also an advocate for me and my family’s best interests. I would not hesitate to hire Jon again in the future and I highly recommend him.

Jon went above and beyond to answer our questions and empower us to do our own research. He was receptive to the evidence we put forward in our very emotionally trying case. He reassured us through some very difficult experiences, always with a balanced approach and considering the safety of our daughter. Given the high cost of our case, he utilized his assistant as much as possible for a lessor hourly fee and was careful to not charge for any errors on his part or short email responses. We won and protected our child. He made good choices that lead to our success and legal protection.

David provided me with the knowledge and advice I needed to successfully navigate my divorce. His assistant Tarrah was fantastic to work with as well. I was charged a reasonable fee to prepare, edit and file all of the documentation. Meetings via Zoom were set up in a timely fashion and my questions and concerns were answered promptly. Although this was a difficult experience, I believe David helped to make it as smooth as possible for me. I would highly recommend hiring David if the need arises.

David I Bean has helped me with renewing my Restraining Order against my aggressive and dishonest ex during COVID-19. David takes my case seriously. He approached me and try to sort out my issues although he could ask his assistant to do intake on behalf of him and let me have a longer wait. However he didn't. David let me have time and space so that I can bring the most useful resources related to the issues. He listens very well. David can react to a new situation and transition it smoothly. We went to the Court for a in-person hearing, but it turned out to be a phone hearing. David was able to fast response how to deliver certain tasks to proper person/Judge to get things going seamlessly. David cares about community. He donates his time and knowledge and help me to become a better person. In a word, David is a lawyer with good heart. It was a great experience to learn from this excellent human being, Lawyer David I Bean.

I faced a difficult situation with tenants who refused to leave after legal notices were sent. After months of working to resolve the situation, it was apparent legal assistance was required to evict. This attorney was initially recommended by the Oregon State Bar. He worked with compassion for the tenants as requested, and excellent knowledge of the laws and procedures required. As a result, the case was resolved timely. Questions were answered with patience. Billing was clear, and was reasonable cost compared to others. No hidden charges or surprises. Highly recommend.

I found Tanzosh Family Law after multiple calls to other attorney's in the area. Brenna was personable, answered my questions, and was very sympathetic and understanding during my consultation (divorce - mostly amicable). Her billing was accurate in time devoted to my case and I never felt she 'added on or made things longer' than they needed to be. Very fair in price and represented me very well. I would highly recommend them to anyone needing assistance in Family Law. Side note: She also decided to hire an assistant during the time I was utilizing Brenna's services. Brenna & Michael took my case a couple of years ago and it was complicated, and at the time very emotional with the circumstances and challenges. They got me in the right mental frame of mind with their support. Then we meticulously went through our options, and devised a plan. We reached a settlement that was fair and equitable for both sides which is all I could have asked. It didn’t get messy because Brenna & Michael were empathetic to the factors in our case. I’m forever grateful for the outcome. They are top shelf professionals that know the law and the reality. I highly recommend them to the serious person that desires a fair shake, and is willing to put in the time to get there. Sincerely, Jeff Johnson

Zero stars would be great to post, however, by now most people expect that 1 star means the same thing as zero or less. Beware. I am moving forward with the ethics complaint with the State Bar Association and I will be posting an honest review of this company with every message board, blog and review I can find. This firm was hired to do a job they had agreed was the best course of action. After they got my money, they try to force a different course of action that would only yield further litigation costs and injury to my child and myself. Sarah Bain was assigned to my case. She had admitted that she had not dealt with an out of state custody issue but reassured me that the Senior partners had and would be overseeing the case. After payment was received by the firm, and Sarah was appointed the case, She called to gather information. She had suggested a different course of action as did the first person there that I consulted with, and also agreed that the actions they were retained for was the best way to go. At the conclusion of this phone call, Sarah stated that she would begin drafting the papers and would send me a copy to review within the next few days. After 10 days without hearing from them, I called to check the status of the papers she was supposedly drafting. By the time she returned my call, I was on the road. Cellular service was poor and communications then moved to emails. From this point on is where I get reminded that anytime you are dealing with an attorney, email should be your only method of communication and kept in writing (especially with your own attorney). Everything in writing is the only way you can prove what they told you and then didn't do. The multiple emails that followed over the course of a few weeks each started with Sarah pushing her agenda of this different course of action. Each one ended with me requesting they move forward with the course they were retained for. It then escalated to Sarah emailing one of the Senior Partners William Jones and CC the email conversations to me where she is asking them if she is not being clear enough of the course of action she has continued to take in spite of my very clear wishes she do what they were retained to do. During all of this, Sarah had made multiple misrepresentations of what the proceedings are and waiting periods in order to push her course of action as the correct one. Apparently William Jones believes that all his firms clients haven't any knowledge of any legal issues, practices or remedies and legal definitions. HIs emails consisted of legal analogies that basically equate to comparing an apple to an orange as though you wouldn't know the difference and just take his word for it. I may not be a lawyer, but I have been through this with my EX for over 10 years now having had to represent myself in much of it. All the information you need to handle any legal issue is available to you for free through your states websites. You hire an attorney because they should be proficient with the law, and its a little complicated to navigate the court system. On top of that, the courts hate you for representing yourself. But you should always research the laws, court proceedings and family code to ensure what your attorney tells you is the truth. Most of the papers you will receive from an attorney that was filed with the court is verbatim from these codes. The end result was this firm charged me $4,000 to push me to do something other than what they were hired to do. $4,000 yielded zero attorney work product, a delay in court proceedings and further injury to my child and myself.

I was using William Jones' services for my divorce case with child involved. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about William. He made a challenging process much easier for me! He is very intelligent and well versed in law practice and always has an answer for you, and even makes it simple to understand. He is extremely professional and polite! The best part is that William is very honest with his fees, he will tell you right away what he will charge and his bill explains in detail what he used his services for, so there is no misunderstanding. He responded to my calls, voicemails very fast, most of the time within few hours, sometimes within 24 hours. What made me chose him as my lawyer, is that he was the only one that was willing to give me a free hour consultation with very professional advice. It is very challenging to find a good lawyer, so it is important to interview them before you hire them, unfortunately not many lawyer give free consultation. I highly recommend William!!! If I ever need a family lawyer again , I will definitely use his services again :)

Quite simply, I must say this: Will is a great attorney. When I was dealing with a difficult alimony issue, I moved my case from another attorney, which was the best move I could have made. Will did a detailed analysis of the complicated financial issues in my case, looked at every angle and made sure everything was handled before the case was heard. When we went to court, I felt that I was well represented. Using his thorough research, Will presented all of his terrific analyses in court – and, as a result, I wholly prevailed in my case. With Will’s great efforts, I felt that I finally found a piece of justice in a difficult divorce situation.

The firm was cold, the employees frequently chose not to reply to emails, and while I won my arbitration, this attorney wrote the award in a way that I still lost money trying to protect my rights. They entirely missed the initial protocol to begin arbitration and I had to call them out.. They were late on filings, but sent emails saying they filed on time (do you not know these things are timestamped?).. A general improvement in professionalism and regard for those receiving paid services is greatly needed. They seem to not understand or care about the difficulties of civilians navigating a system that is not weighted in their favor. I would not recommend, find an attorney that is genuinely interested in your protecting equity in your rights over receiving your money.

It is a miracle that I found Mr. Ragland when I did. Andy prevented my daughter from being moved out of state after my divorce, a situation that was terrifying and confusing, and a challenge that he accepted with immediacy. He brought a lifelong career's worth of experience as well as the empathy of being a father and grandfather into this case and we fought back fiercely and won. This child relocation case was a high stakes, lengthy, and emotional journey for me as a father, and Mr. Ragland brought empathy, humor, and clarity of mind to an otherwise harrowing experience, and for such a sustained amount of time. To be frank, Andrew Ragland is my personal hero. He kept me grounded and focused and it's impossible for me to imagine how I could have gone through that case with any one else. A rare and wonderful human, and an immensely skilled, wise, and consummate attorney - I recommend Mr. Ragland immensely.

Be aware of not honest people, who will lie to you from the start. If you looking to be represented by a honest attorney this isn’t the one. Especially George MCcoy who lied to me about my case until I run out of money.

Horrible work ethic, poor follow though. Played mind games to prolong a custody battle. Has his own agenda. My ex and I settled own custody battle after ditching Valent and were much better for it. Not after spending thousands for nothing. He is a peice of work

I was referred to Bill by a criminal law attorney and a trust attorney who both had worked with Bill and had been impressed by his fair business practices and willingness to listen and apply the facts of case. In my case Bill gave fair and sound council resulting and accurately predicted the judges findings. I found him to be extremely experienced and respected by the judicial community. He clearly knows his business. I would highly recommend this good man to anyone in need of a truly smart attorney.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
