I had the pleasure of having Lauren Iannelli represent me in a recent legal matter. Lauren is highly knowledgeable, and extremely kind and helpful. I highly recommend her to anyone who many need attorney representation, I can assure you that you will not be disappointed. If I could I would give Lauren 10 stars, from the bottom of my heart thank you Lauren!

Stefano V. Famiglietti has represented me two times for worker's comp cases and has been fantastic, he always made sure I was well informed as to what was going on with my case, answered all my questions making sure I fully understood, and fought to get me what I deserve. I will definitely recommend him to anyone that needs representation in the future and will absolutely use him again in the unfortunate case he is needed.

First off Chris was the second attorney I hired. I want to State this so you understand I did have a taste of a different Law Firm prior to interacting with Chris. Chris is a bulldog in court I say this without meaning he is outlandish or over the top. At some point Chris was going against three other attorneys and completely mopped the floor with them. He has a Stern but forthright approach to representing his clients and I wouldn't understand for a second anyone using anyone else his office staff is second to none I couldn't be happier with the direct line of communication I received from all parties if you are getting divorced in the state of Rhode Island he is the only choice that makes sense his fees were almost half of what the plaintiff's team charged her

My elderly mother wanted to update her last will and testament, as well as have a living will, medical power of attorney and general power of attorney drafted. Matthew Callaghan, who assisted us, was readily accessible throughout the whole process. My mother and I initially stopped by his office, intending to just make an appointment, but Mr. Callaghan was so accommodating that he stopped what he was doing and sat down with us to begin the process. He sent the documents for review, and he answered my questions in a manner that was easy for me to understand. Once a very minor revision was made, we visited the office a second time so my mother could sign the documents. Both my mother and I found Mr. Callaghan to be very professional and personable.

Attorney Susan Perkins was instrumental at achieving shared placement for my children at the conclusion of my divorce. This was an emotional and life-changing time for me, but Susan was extremely effective at helping me to understand the process, all the while being reassuring and patient with my questions and concerns. In trial, she was respectful to all parties but was effective in bringing the most poignant points to light, ultimately achieving our goal. She is a superb attorney, having the right combination of intelligence, compassion and expert knowledge of if the law to help me and my family move forward in the most positive direction. Susan was a beacon of light at a time when everything seemed so dark. It was important to me that I find an LGBTQ+ affirming lawyer to represent me, and her name kept surfacing as one of the best. She is professional, knowledgeable, compassionate, and when appropriate - tenacious. Whenever I had a question or concern, she was only a text message away. There were multiple times I was ready to concede just to be “done with it”. Susan quelled my nerves and helped guide me throughout, reassuring me at every step. In the end, she was able to give me exactly what I wanted and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome!

Just do it, pay the retainer, it’s worth it. You’ll always have the upper hand; the more reasonable proposals, the better articulated documentation, the more personal lawyer-to-client relationship, etc. If you’re overwhelmed and anxious and cut her off seventy-five times, she speaks calmly the seventy-sixth time, even though you don’t deserve it, because shes really there for you. She’s just the whole package, already in the court room before you or the other party get there, ready to carry you through the darkness. I wish I was kidding, but it’s actually that dramatic.

If you need a family lawyer to fight for you and provide the service you pay him for, then Adam is not your lawyer. I contracted Mr. Northrup recently to help me enforce my parenting visitation rights, as the mother of my daughter had prevented me from seeing her. And to make the court aware the mother of my child has prevented me from seeing her in the past. Therefore, another goal was to sue the mother of my child for blocking me to see my child whenever she feels like it and to not remove the restraining order I have against her. Long story short, Mr. Northrup ended up having the visitation rights as the top priority, ignored the reason why I had a restraining order despite explaining him multiple times it had to be there out of safety for myself. He did not even bring up the fact I had brought this case to court as a reoccurring issue. He then sided with the defendant's (mother) lawyer who at one point during a court hearing called him his "brother" and let him grill me during the court while Mr. Northrup stayed silent. On the other hand, when it comes social skills and professionalism he has none. For instance, on the day I paid him to work on my case, he said he will call me on a specific day to get his case going and he did not. It got to the point I had to call his lawyer partner to remind him he had to call me. Terrible service

She is unprepared or either that does not care. Very difficult to get in touch with. Huge lack of communication. Went to trial on a case that I wanted to fight because it was something that I did not do or have involvement with. She never showed me the report or anything until the day of and things were incorrect and also a false statement. She let me sit there and sink. The outcome I ended up paying a fine for a vehicle. The owner had claimed that I broke a window in which the person did not even have the car or not did it ever exist. Prior to trial I gave her plate numbers and an address to the oners house and car. She never followed up. There is so much more. Do not waste your time with her or money.

I hired Misty for a family court matter and she completely mishandled my case. She would show up to court late or not at all. She never read anything in my file and she kept asking me the same questions that made it apparent that she did not take my case seriously or my situation at all. She did not speak up for me in court nor did she represent my case in an appropriate manner. She took my money and did nothing for it. I found out a year later that she was fired from her job because of her negligent behavior. Best decision that firm ever made. I wouldn't let Misty represent me for free. She is that bad.

Never communicates with you, unless its a very last minute matter, he expects you to know the law and tell him what you'd like him to do, Instead of giving legal suggestions like a great lawyer would. He failed to get us the deed, which would have saved my house Oh and no llyod, you didn't tell us what we would have needed to get it,you told us the certificate of appointment was as good as a deed. It's not even freaking close. So you screwed us over.

The lack of communication is beyond unprofessional. Unanswered phone calls, unanswered emails, and a paralegal named Susan who says he's in court all the time and too busy to respond. This has been going on for months, to the point of me sending certified letters. I plan to report him to the RI bar for violating Rules of Professional and find another attorney. For context, I'm a landlord and Ed was given a judgment to collect upon and he is useless. Do NOT use this attorney for anything that matters. He neglects clients and I suspect he's incompetent.

Contacted this law firm as they claim they handle complex divorces. I did not know Jane had a daughter, I wanted Jane and got the daughter (Meredith). It started out ok, but I got the feeling Meredith wanted to just negotiate and make it go away. I was notified there was an offer from ex’s lawyer, after reviewing the offer, I told Meredith absolutely not, let’s go to trial. Online hearing scheduled for Nov 2021, I hear nothing from Meredith for months and no responses to my emails until day of the hearing. About 10 min before the hearing she finally contacts me with another proposal that was so one sided I think I could have negotiated better myself. I refuse. Hearing is about 5 min and trial scheduled. About one week later, Meredith emails me and sends me a proposal and tells me review it and Let’s put this to bed. The proposal is exactly the same one I said NO to twice!! I ask Meredith why did she send me this proposal again? She claims that it came from the ex and she’s bound by law to present all proposals. Her prior emails hinted that she created this proposal but now is claiming it came From the ex. As I am looking at the email chain I notice Meredith has been CCing someone from RI Monthly magazine and that person has been privy to a lot of our communication. I question Meredith via email as to who that person is and why are they on our email chain and additionally where did that proposal come from? I never received a response. I even CC’ed Jane Howlett on the emails and still never a response. After emailing the law firm for 2 and a half months with no response, I fired them in February 2022. Once I emailed Meredith her services were no longer wanted, she emailed me back with in minutes. Money is owed to me from my retainer, their office claims it’s $800 and change due to me, I believe it’s more but to date they refuse to send me any money back as of May 9th. I have contacted the RI Judiciary disciplinary board to file a complaint. I hired a new attorney and my case is now finished and I did very well. Absolutely do not hire Meredith Howlett. I can’t speak of Jane, however I made her aware of all this in emails and she never responded so I assume she condones this type of service and behavior

Another attorney in this office was recommended. Unfortunately, he was not taking new clients. I settled for Damian Nash. It proved to be a terrible decision. The hallmark of an effective attorney is excellent communication skills between the attorney, his staff, and his clients. An attorney should keep clients updated on all developments, and thoroughly explain legal terms and the processes to ensure they are understood. Equally important is having competent, responsible, and dependable office staff who will forward all forms of communication to the attorney. All of these were blatantly lacking. Important emails were overlooked and not sent to the attorney. The attorney met my inquiry regarding these issues with anger and a defensive attitude. Damian Nash was unresponsive, uncommunicative, and displayed an unprofessional response to my concerns. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND HIM TO ANYONE. I am a businesswoman who treats clients with the respect they deserve. He needs to do the same!!!

My husband and I had a DCYF case open against us and throughout the whole ordeal and without judgement Kevin was there. He was always available to take a phone call or to make a phone call on our behalf. He was always at court and never sent a proxy (NEVER!). You could tell he genuinely cared and it wasnt all for money which from my experience is a rare trait for a lawyer. He advocated for us and got our case closed almost 4 months early. He was our voice in a system where we really are not given one. He explained to the judge that we are hard working educated individuals, good parents and although we have our issues we were/are addressing them. I hope I never need another family attorney but if I do I will definitely be calling Kevin!

My name is Scott Coutu, I had Joel Chase as a lawyer and not only did he do very well for me he helped me change my life. The experience that he has made him a respected man with prosecutors as well as his clients all you have to do is look up his past and find out that he is the best lawyer in New England. And what I mean by being respected by the prosecutors is that they know he knows the law inside and out and will not sell you out like other lawyers in Rhode Island I could go on but I would be writing for days I can’t say enough good things about him . I’m gonna end this by saying that he is worth every dollar because he won’t take a deal he will always protect your wrights till the end.

Geri and her paralegal Kerrin are the BEST. 2 very caring, knowledgeable, and legally savvy gals. Anxiety and stress can wreak havoc on you mentally and physically when going through the family court system. Do not expect overnight results in a custody battle. What you can expect from them is good advice, good direction, and results. (and at a reasonable price) Kerrin ALWAYS answers the phone and takes time to listen during business hours. I’ve called and emailed Geri at all hours of the day and night and always received a response by the end of the day. Let me tell you something you may not know, but will soon learn once you have entered Rhode Island’s biggest failure to date: the Family Court system. You will soon learn how priceless it is to have a responsive attorney. I’ve had many attorneys in my day. NONE respond with answers as fast as Geri does. I highly recommend Geralyn Cook. And lastly, to any parent reading this. Love your children and put them before anything else in life.Never ever stop fighting for them. And most importantly, do not take any time you have with them for granted.

Mr. Keough is one of the most low energy attorneys I’ve ever seen and couldn’t have seemed for disinterested. I found myself doing work that they should have been doing.

I had reached out to this lawyer due to being a friend of the family she came on to my family court case and honestly couldnt afford her 2500 retainer explained this to her and she was willing to step in and be appointed by the state for me i was beyond appreciative of her doing so but from that moment on i was no longer a client i was a number to her from over 15 missed court dates talked one day about setting a motion the next day and never heard back from her for 6 plus months, 3 plus, 2 plus after that no responses to emails calls or texts i had to be rude in emails and calls to even get her on the phone (which any one who knows me would tell you for me to have to get that way means i had to try all other ways before getting me to that point as i was raised to be respectful always ) maybe the 3 or 4 times i was able to over the past year and a half it was super frustrating to try and represent myself time and time again when my family and my daughters life was at such high risks with sending my daughter 7 states away and to fight for her return when said placement was an awful fit and my child was being brutally hurt by children and staff, i was thankful for my case worker for moving as fast and doing what she could as quickly as possible but was told that if my lawyer was involved she could have sped up the process and she didnt and the awful thing about it, when im asked by other collegues of hers who represents me i state who she is and what i have been throught and EVERY single one of them say your not the first one to tell me this i hear it alot people arnt happy with her becauae she never showes up including other parents and social workers cant stand working with her as they can never seem to get intouch with her even when they cc her on documents and emails. I went to court yesterday knowing i was going to ask the judge to assign me another lawyer as she has failed me on neumerous occasions and i felt i wasnt being represtented at all let alone fairly and her actions were beyond unprofessional, before i could get most of my sentence out the judge looked at me and said your absolutly right you deserve better and i was thinking myself to reasign you today as it is not fair to you and your family ... A JUDGE!!!! .I was told this judge doesnt reasign cases often or at all but once she saw me always showing up with out representation time and time and time again she felt for me. If you are one to not worry about the case and dont like updates or calls or emails or be present at your court hearings and dates shes your girl!!!! but if you love your family and want whats right for them and common curtisy and a professional to be by your side SHE IS NOT IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM YOUR GIRL!!!!!!

I had an absolutely HORRIBLE experience with Meredith. If I could give her zero stars I would. She never kept me updated about the happenings of my case. She didn’t respond to calls, texts or emails in a timely fashion. She blamed me for delays in the case stating I didn’t return documents, when in fact she had never asked for said documents. She didn’t show up to court- she had someone show up in her place without notifying me prior. I even caught her in several lies regarding whom she had spoken to regarding my case. She refuses to return the $1300 of the “refundable” deposit that was unused at the time I fired her. Meredith will take your money and won’t do a single thing for you. She was my lawyer for almost a year and nothing got done. Save yourself the trouble, hire someone else.

Meredith was absolutely amazing in representing me in my case. She always kept constant communication with me on what was going on and what the process would be inside the court room. She is extremely professional in every aspect and I would highly recommend her for anyone looking for representation.

Very helpful law firm! Helped me with my car accident, although it took some time due to the other persons insurance being slow to get back to them. Mark (who dealt with the insurance part) gave me a very professional rundown on how accident claims work and what to expect in this situation. 10/10 would recommend.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
