Took CASH as the retainer. He said to give him more as it lessens the amount potentially available to the ex wife. Give back the excess at the end. Well, once he had the cash it was all gone!!! Padded the expenses. Took 20K and did nothing for it. Then asked for another 5k to finish....... Are you kidding me, a thief amongst lawyers. Tried to get in touch with him when the ex came to try and empty the house I just bought again.... he was no where to be found!!! Terrible job, thief and really classless. I guess CASH taints even lawyers who are supposed to be protecting you.

Family Court is a dynamic all its own. You never know what you are going to get. Divorce is an emotional roller coaster. I have never met a more empathetic person who really understood what I was going through. Facing these issues is stressful enough When you have an attorney who actually has your back you feel like you can get through it. He is accessible 24 hours a day and his staff are very courteous and respectful. He always returns my emails calls and texts, even on the weekend. When the divorce was finalized, I felt like I was very well represented by Sangiovanni.

Rob Mcneilis especially but Terry as well both are so caring and thorough with their work, I have had quite a crazy couple of years and without Rob and Terry I don't know what I would have done they are affordable, reasonable and I'd say even under charge for what they do for people. Sal their assistant also goes above and beyond to make sure everything is done right and timely. Just truly impressed by this office and I would recommend if you're looking for great affordable work pick these guys, they truly go ABOVE AND BEYOND.

Another attorney in this office was recommended. Unfortunately, he was not taking new clients. I settled for Damian Nash. It proved to be a terrible decision. The hallmark of an effective attorney is excellent communication skills between the attorney, his staff, and his clients. An attorney should keep clients updated on all developments, and thoroughly explain legal terms and the processes to ensure they are understood. Equally important is having competent, responsible, and dependable office staff who will forward all forms of communication to the attorney. All of these were blatantly lacking. Important emails were overlooked and not sent to the attorney. The attorney met my inquiry regarding these issues with anger and a defensive attitude. Damian Nash was unresponsive, uncommunicative, and displayed an unprofessional response to my concerns. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND HIM TO ANYONE. I am a businesswoman who treats clients with the respect they deserve. He needs to do the same!!!

My wife and I were referred to this attorney to mediate our case, which was very contentious. We could not agree to anything, especially issues about our kids. We did not think anything could make us agree and we were facing an expensive legal fight in court. Susan was a great listener. She understood both of our positions on all of the issues and one by one got us to somehow agree on all of them. We are both very satisfied with the agreement we reached. There was some give and take but both of us agreed that the outcome was fair. Susan did a great job. She was knowledgeable and made both of us comfortable.

Writing this review from my experience with her from a few years ago. Very rude, her attitude is horrible as mentioned in previous review, very pushy. Told her I'd check with a few other lawyers for my case, and she did not seem to take too kindly to that. Maybe she is an effective lawyer, but that is not how you should treat your potential clients. Glad I never went with her. Highly recommend using someone else.

I am a family law attorney. However, I had a family law issue and I didn't believe it was prudent to represent myself so I engaged Attorney Octeau. She was very knowledgeable and was able to handle four major issues with my ex-wife so that we did not have to force the matter into court. People can easily be put off by her rough exterior and tell it like it is attitude but that is precisely what made her an excellent lawyer to handle my family matter. If I had to do it again I wouldn't choose another attorney. She is a gem in this field but is not known for it and often overlooked. People who find her are lucky. She will keep you informed and she will be upfront and honest about your case. Don't be put off by whether she has recognition in her field. After 24 years I have used her in a number of capacities besides family law and she's a damn good lawyer.

He was unable to obtain medical records for months on my case. I got them on my own in 1 week. His legal assistant, Shawna, was just as bad. After getting the records, I went to another lawyer and already have a demand in to the defendant. Greg said he couldn't get any damages. Stay away and find a competent lawyer!

After I explained my specific situation and need for a criminal lawyer, Mr. Surdut listened patiently and expressed compassion and genuine concern. I called court to verify my case was filed, to find out he had only just filed one day pervious, 7 months after I paid him.. 6 months after he told me he filed to 1st time! 3rd lie was the Constable, I called her directly to verify, of course, she’d never heard of me or my case!! Long story short hired this attorney for a divorce. If you want to do most of the leg work yourself and more than once because somehow he needs things again and again, if you want to make repeated calls to try to get him to call you back, if you want to show up In court after making arrangements to be out of work to find out your case has been postponed and he didn’t tell you but somehow your soon to be ex husband knew about it, if you want this divorce case to take forever because of all of his short comings and if you want to end up getting screwed over in the end, go ahead, give him a call. Promises the moon to get you to hire him then basically disappears and has you do what you are paying him for.. the only positive is I finally got my divorce and he reduced his fee because he knew he screwed up.

Neil Philbin is in our opinion after dealing with the man, an arrogant, sarcastic, and condescending jerk. We are filing a complaint with the Rhode Island Bar Association and will also hit the man with the biggest Malpractice Lawsuit he has ever seen. The man does not keep you informed and sneaks his way into large cases, how, we are still researching this, but he is like a little weasel praying on the uninformed and using other law firms and lawyers to weasel his way into being part of a lawsuit without the party's knowledge. After he is in and you find out about him, it becomes to late to do anything about it and he then will try and take your lawsuit apart and tell you your case is worthless. After he tells you the case is worthless and rips apart your injuries. When we are done with him, he will be standing in the unemployment lines in Rhode Island. The man should be disbarred. He is just another weasel attorney in the State of Rhode Island. DO NOT EVER HIRE HIM..! YOU WILL WISH YOU NEVER EVEN LOOKED AT THE MAN.!

I originally hired Christine Borzilleri (now Stowell) in March of 2013 to help me adopt my son. She told me the process wasn’t complicated and it should take about six months. I was unemployed and didn’t have unlimited resources so the price was very reasonable but I guess it’s true...you get what you pay for. My adoption case became final Nov. 12, 2014. Seems that the only way I could get Christine to respond to my emails was to threaten her with calling the Bar Association or something. I could never just get a timely response. One of the documents I had to provide for the court was my son’s original birth certificate. That had to come from the Philippines and it was not easy to procure. I gave it to Ms. Borzilleri and the court says they personally handed it back to her the day my son’s adoption was final. Now, she can’t find it. I requested all my documents before the final hearing and Ms. Borzelleri said she would bring them all to me. The day of the adoption she did not. When I asked her what happened to my files she replied that she keeps them for many years. Then I found out that I’m actually entitled to have my files. Ms. Borzilleri didn’t respond to my subsequent requests for them (as well as my son’s birth certificate) until I’d informed her that I’d called Mr. Ken Luke at the MA Board of Bar Overseers. As I write this today, Feb. 6, 2015, I still don’t have my files but Ms. Borzilleri says they’re “in the mail”. She still says that she can’t find my son’s birth certificate and that’s pretty much the end of that, she’s done. My option here is to hire another lawyer to sue her to pay for my expenses in procuring yet another birth certificate. I’m so tired of this process but now, if I want my son’s birth certificate I have to go to court again? Agggggh. Buyer beware. If you hire Christine Borzilleri (Stowell) it will take you twice as long to resolve your case and get minimal response (if any) to your inquiries. Plus she may lose your original, important paperwork. I just don't want someone else to have to go through what I experienced with this lawyer.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
