Ladies, if you are getting divorced, this is the place you want to go, specifically Bart Johnson's team. Bart in particular will comfort and console you and even take you to his home in the avenues and sleep with you. Pictures of him and his clients have been taken exiting and kissing outside of his home, he prefers women of authority, like a doctor or a principal at a school as examples. If you want them to win a case for you however, that is where they lack. They file a lot, but don't succeed in much other than waste your money but at least you get screwed in more ways than one.

I engaged John Snow to represent me in March of 2023 with the only request being to remove a Trustee who had embezzled millions of dollars from a family Trust. The issue with it was that it implicates Kirton McConkie in the fraud so I made certain Parsons Behle had no problem going after “The Lords Lawyers” to which John responded “of course not” On April 14th 2013 he issued a letter to KMC law requesting answers to various questions but in the end has nothing to do with removing the Trustee. KMC Law refused to respond and John brought in Angus Edwards and Mindy Kids to assist. On June 7th or almost two months later Mr Edwards sent the exact letter knowing there would be no response.. August 9th 2023 the three attorneys filed an unrelated derivative claim against my siblings but did confirm the KMC fraud within the body; but just refused to add KMC as a defendant in this $100M estate case. August 18th The attorneys filed amended complaint forgetting to add the summons. They refiled three weeks later on Sept 12th but forgot to verify the complaint. Oct 3rd; I complained to John Snow via emails to which he responded “I do not have the time to read or respond to your questions and we are “done”! I paid approx $75k in fees and accruals to have a trustee removed and instead I was dropped the day before the hearing in which I was forced to go pro se against KMC who Judge Faust let off with a false Jurisdiction issue. He wasted 7 months of my life; took all of my money; and left me with no representation to face the law firm who refuses to account for my parents $100m estate which has been embezzled by my sister and Craig McCullough through “The Old Switcheroo”… Please review case# 230905835 wherein John Snow states Mr McCullough KMC Law has a Professional Conflict of interest and everything the law firm did should be “void” When asked why he refused to go after KMC Law and stand behind his words; he responded “just because I said it does not mean it is true”. All that Parsons and the three attorneys needed to say last March is “sorry; we have a conflict of interest”. But chose instead to breach their fiduciary duty to me and my daughters in favor of apparently keeping their fiduciary duty to the most prestigious religiously affiliated law firm in Utah.. I’m speechless as to how cold hearted and ruthless these attorneys are I’ve been dealing with for four years while being prohibited to see my own dad who is still alive and abandoned by KMC Law who he paid hundreds of thousands in fees to have them protect him; and not my sister Lisa Stephens and her husband Bryan.. After interviewing several lawyers I decided to retain Kelly Ann Booth. I was impressed by how aggressive she was--though the retainer fee was steeper than other lawyers. I liked her personality and felt she would represent me well. That faded over time as she showed up late to my initial hearing. She never contacted me or kept me apprised of what was happening. I didn't feel like she was representing me very well so I found another lawyer. It was an expensive lesson--as I lost my entire retainer and didn't really have anything to show for it. I think she could be a very capable lawyer, but I wouldn't hire her or recommend her.

I was very impressed with Kelly Ann Booth and her partner Rudy Bautista. They are very aggressive defense attorneys. We fought my case to trial and after a 2 hour deliberation the jury came back not guilty. Such a gratifying moment. Kelly Ann and Rudy worked hard on my case from start to finish.

We had the honor of having Kelly Ann represent us recently for a criminal matter related to my spouse. Not only did Kelly Ann get us the best outcome possible and do an amazing job fighting on our behalf, she also helped us get through the whole expungement process as well to get the arrest taken off his record. If you find yourself or a loved one in trouble with the law, you can’t go wrong with Kelly Ann.

Based on my consultations with them, Jaclyn and JR Law Group have some serious issues. Before you ever consider retaining this firm, take your time to read their draconian (excessively severe) fee agreement. The retainer and fee agreement for this firm is the worst retainer and fee agreement I’ve ever seen. It speaks to the kind of one-sided relationship a client would need to engage in with Jaclyn and her firm. I’m happy to share a few details, but when I very respectfully called to discuss what I found to be a one-sided agreement, Jaclyn called me back in a very aggressive, rude, condescending way, and told me if I had questions about her fee agreement that I basically needed to go away. That’s how she’ll handle conflicts with you. It’s her way or the highway, without consideration for you. By way of contrast, when I spoke with a very seasoned attorney, with extremely high reviews, about two concerns re: their contract, he was calm, kind, listened, offered their reasoning and we came to a mutual agreement. That’s how it’s supposed to be done Jaclyn and Elenia!! So here are a few details from the agreement: They require an extremely high retainer for the work considered. Theirs was more than twice as high as anyone else’s and 3X higher than Elenia said the main part of the case would cost. Unlike every law firm I’ve ever heard of or encountered, their fee agreement states that their “billing rates serve only as a BENCHMARK, and not the sole determinant of the value of the firms services for the client for billing purposes” and the primary attorney, at her sole discretion, can decide the value of the services. What that means is you don’t pay their hourly rate — you pay what they demand. That’s absurd and abusive!! There is no provision in the agreement for the client to review bills and let the firm know if they do not believe that the bill is accurate or if they have a question in the bill. Nothing. Rather than a fair provision to review your bill, it says that outstanding balances are “due UPON RECEIPT of the invoice” and provides the firm the right to auto debit the client’s credit card whatever amount they deem appropriate. They bill every two weeks. Imagine that you get a bill every two weeks and you have no time to review it and it is due the moment that you get it and they can auto charge your credit card whatever they decide you owe. Again, excessive. They have the right to quit your case, “at any time” according to their fee agreement, but specifically if you don’t forfeit your right to take time to review your bill because then you wouldn’t be paying immediately. If you had a billing or other issue and Jaclyn or Elenia were unreasonable in resolving it and your only option was to go to court (which is hopefully unlikely but it exists in the realm of possibility) they say that you must pay them while it’s being litigated and you grant them the right to lien your funds or property. It’s paragraph 9. Read that again: While you’re protecting your rights, they can lien your funds or property. In my interaction with Jaclyn, it’s clear she is a very high conflict person. So your chances of resolving a disagreement with her or her firm (Elenia hides behind her) are likely slim. Her contract leaves you with ZERO power in the dynamic. I believe that’s how she wants it. I’ve spent two decades mentoring tens of thousands of women and empowering them. This firm is not for you if you want to stand in your power and have a fair, trustworthy, equitable relationship with your lawyer.

Honestly, I could not have asked for a better attorney. First, I never hoped to ever need an attorney for my divorce, but secondly, I always heard about how horrible attorney's are for returning their client's phone calls. Never have I been more wrong. Who would have thought my attorney would be so quick to answer all of my questions whether it be through email, phone, or sometimes even for a last minute in-office visit? Unfortunately, divorce is becoming more and more common. If anyone needs a divorce, this is the guy to go to!

Attorney Karra Porter said she would send a gramma request to get a 911 call and other police records for our family. After a month or two I called back to follow up and her paralegal stated that they had forgot to do it due to a family emergency but that they would definitely still do it. After another month or so I called back to see if there were any updates and was not called back. Over a period of close to 4-6 months they have not returned my phone calls or voicemails. At one point the receptionist told me that Karra would call me back the next day and she did not. If they were not interested or willing to look into this I would have found another attorney. But both Karra and her paralegal said they would do this for me and they did not; or if they have done it they have not given me any updates. Due to this delay we have now passed the 1 year mark of my family member’s passing and may not be able to hold the city accountable if there was in fact any neglect of duty. I believed that Karra was sincere in her willingness to help out my family but due to either her failure to act or failure to inform us of any actions taken, she has done our family more harm than if she would have simply declined.

Mark Wiser, might talk the talk and making you believe that he will defend you and will on a few “written” responses, leading you to believe he has your back, but when it comes down to it and when you need him the most. He CAVES like a WET NOODLE. NOT the man you want to take to a gun fight or war because he is cahoots with the enemy and $$ He is unorganized,, scatter, and can’t keep his cases straight let alone be on top of yours. His best quality is making sure his invoice and billing are sent out on time.

If you are looking for a law firm that will represent you with high integrity, professionalism, and transparency, I highly recommend Wiser & Wiser. I used a different firm before switching to Wiser and Wiser. I am extremely grateful I made the switch. Not only do they have an extraordinary level of legal knowledge and detail, the Wisers also have a keen understanding of the analytical, strategic, and political landscape of legalese. I have also been impressed with their team approach and how they work concurrently to ensure there are no gaps in casework. I cannot sufficiently express my gratitude for this law firm that has restored my confidence in the legal system. I met with Mr. Hanks seeking assistance in obtaining alimony that my ex-husband had not paid for several months. His counsel to me was to write a letter requesting the behind payments, when I received no reply he also sent a letter of request, again no reply. This was my first insight into Mr. Hanks ethics and moral code....while he represented me in this case, he treated all involved with dignity....offering the opportunity for my ex to bring the balance due before going into court. I again was impressed with the due diligence that Mr. Hanks and his assistant performed in representing my request, at the same time conferring with my ex-husband to give him the opportunity to resolve the payment issue before going before the judge. In all of my conversations with Mr. Hanks, I felt a genuine sense of respect , a confidence in his abilities and knowledge of my matter, and a integrity of character that is far too often missing. I would recommend James B. Hanks without any hesitation!!

This was the worst experience of my life. He was over priced, having his paralegal do the majority of the work which was mostly reading over what I wrote and putting into a template (i.e. had no value). He would call me up randomly and discuss things unrelated to the case and bill me for it. He did not seem to care or put effort into my case and reviewed it on the way to court with little to say at court. If anything, he seemed to give fuel and power to the other attorney and reiterated what was already written. I was ill advised and seemed worse off having hired him.

Utah law does allow for an annulment, but it is very challenging and very rarely granted. They are complex cases and the rules are very precise on what is allowed for annulment. I had a complex issue that I strongly believed constituted an annulment vs a divorce. Justin Ashworth conferred with me directly on multiple occasions and advised at the onset of the case that this would be a challenge and that there is no guarantee the Judge would grant an annulment and possibley make me choke down a divorce. I was worried as the Judge advised on preliminary hearing that he had never granted an annulment and wondered why a divorce would not apply., Justin Ashworth did his research in case law, conferred with me in person to obtaini exhibits and listen to my story. He developed a game plan on how to proceed throughout the process. Practiced with me and put together the case. Justin Ashworth was able to eloquently answer that question the Judge had asked why an annulment and not divorce. I was granted my annulment. This was indeed a challenging case and I am very pleased will the patience, professionalism work that Justin Ashworth provided. I hope I never have to use him again but if I had another family law issue, I definitely would not hesitate to use him again.

I paid him $2500 initially to look into any appeals available to concerning a DCFS support decision affecting my daughter. Decision was made by an "administrative law judge" without a notice or opportunity to appear. There is a reason this clown doesn't have an office or a way to contact him - he doesn't want to be found. When I attempt to fire him for doing virtually nothing my certified mail to his website address was returned as non-deliverable. I filed a complaint with the Utah State Bar and he made false statements and submitted bogus billing charges mostly for "internet searches" at $225 an hour. Lazy and incompetent!

I didn't even comprehend before I had Sarah represent me that an attorney could be so terrible. She does way more harm than good. I was completely transparent with her, went into detail about everything. She listens and nods, as if it's all sinking in. She had my case for months and right before we are scheduled to talk to the judge she told me I didn't have a case. My ex is a diagnosed sociopath. She had no clue about parental alienation and she's a family law attorney. IMO she shouldn't even have a law license.

Sarah advised me many times to do things that ended up causing more harm than good and just cost more money. She was not able to handle the stress of my case and had a hard time “winning” on any level. When I confronted her with my concerns, she was rude, condescending and belittling. I would not reccomend her to anyone.

Was in a lengthy custody battle and just in general with my sons mother we were never married. Throughout Sarah and her assistant were there every step of the way even at one point I was granted full temporary custody as a man in Utah that happens very little. She's a truly caring person that will give you your money's worth. Utah needs to be better about enforcing law and about realizing sex is just that and has no bearing on who is better for a child. In reality both are best separate or not cause at times one or the other may not be the better parent. For a situation so complex Sarah is a good person to have to help you through it.

This firm is absolutely incompetent, in particular Mark Swan who has made multiple excuses as to why the work we hired him to do a year ago hasn't been completed. I would strongly recommend anyone considering hiring this firm to look elsewhere.

Mr Johnson is a terrible person, let alone attorney. I have been fighting for my rights of visitation with my children, and due to false allegations made by my ex husband, allegations i can prove are false, Mr Johnson treated me like i was a liar. He did not help my case in any way. Not worth the time or money.

I was hit with a false child abuse allegation at the commencement of my divorce and thought my life was over. Things were a total disaster. DCFS had substantiated the false abuse, a TRO prevented me from having any contact with my kids and they were being badly alienated with the help of a biased therapist. Eric fought hard for me and we accomplished the impossible. I now enjoy regular visitation and all that drama is behind me. Eric is an excellent attorney for someone who is up against the ropes. I highly recommend him.

During a custody case, I needed him to help me file paperwork and get things going. He was terrible at communication, I had to call every day multiple times a day just to get a response. I had to call the court on numerous occasions to figure out what was going on in my case. After one phone call with the court, I found out that he made a mistake on the paperwork and had to refile but he never did. This was back in February it is now May and still hasn't been filed. I was told that they would be closing the case shortly if there was no action done by the attorney. I am severely disappointed as I had to pay the fees upfront and now I am essentially ghosted. I am a struggling single mom and I am not happy with him at all. He should just stick to estates and not do family law at all.

I hired him in November 2018 To get some clarity on some divorce decree issues. He bid the case at under $2500 and estimated it would take 2 or 3 months. 15 months later and after nearly $10K I fired him. Thru this process he was was unable or unwilling to have things happen that he promised. His billing was random in timing. I handled the case pro se and had it settled in 6-7 months. I would never hire him again. Complete waste of money and would not recommend him to anyone. Completely dissatisfied client

Used his firm for an adoption case and it was a nightmare. From the beginning he was horrible at sticking to timetables and keeping us updated. With it being a family law case and one that was highly sensitive anyway, there was not a lot of understanding on his part for that. He never bothered to even remember the children's names, or my last name for that matter. There was always misspellings, mistakes, etc. My biggest problem with was him keeping his word, filing correct documents and keeping us informed. We had better luck getting updates from the court house and eventually went with another firm that did the job he swore wasn't possible.

One star is too many, zero should be an option. The amount of damage Tamara did to my case is unforgivable. She made glaring errors, completely forgot to file orders, would ignore emails/calls/texts for months and months on end, and gave advice that has harmed the lives of many, including children. She made no efforts to take accountability for what she did or try and fix the damage done, withdrawing when the full scope of her mistakes became apparent. It will take years to attempt to undo what she did, and more money than I can imagine. Tamara should not be a licensed attorney. She has been reported to the office of professional misconduct with hundreds of pages of documented evidence. I will take all necessary steps to hold her accountable for her actions so she cannot do this to another unsuspecting client. Do not consider her in your search for an attorney if you are looking for competency and professionalism, or even just an attorney you’d like to be able to get a hold of within a month two. There are bad attorneys, then there are attorneys who will ruin your life. Tamara is the latter.

I can never thank her enough for all that she has done for me and my family.

Mr Mcconkie represented the other party in long and messy divorce case —which never should have been been long or messy. Several of his colleagues have confirmed that Mr Mcconkie’s work persona had shifted im recent years, and he often gets caught up “pleasing” clients (including incredibly unstable and abusive ones), rather than looking for smart ways to shorten the case & reduce the cost + trauma of family court. If you’re looking for a trusted attorney who is actively finding ways to mediate quickly, save time and costs, and not invoice you for years while he gladly feeds the drama, keep looking.

Cassie was not professional nor prepared for my custody case. During the hearing she was on her laptop doing other work, she would not meet with me for the hearing until an hour before, and when I asked to meet with her to prepare for further proceedings she dumped me. When I needed help with my divorce, Sallie Benedict not only gave me solid legal advice, she also showed great compassion and understanding for what my family and I were going through. I hired Sallie Benedict of Alder & Robb, P.C. The service I received was very poor at best. I spent a substantial amount of money for time supposedly spent on my case which resulted in the court nearly dismissing the case twice because of inactivity. The only reason the case was not dismissed, and costing me even more money, was due to opposing counsel asking the court to keep the case open. Neither Sallie Benedict nor Alder & Robb, P.C notified the court that they were representing me; therefore the court assumed I was representing myself. I strongly suggest you look elsewhere if you need good legal representation!

I worked with McKenzie for several months. She is nice and helpful, but i was disappointed in her grasp or recall of the details of my case. I should have recognized the signs. I corrected the details in the case many times, in fact each document sent to me for approval needed corrections. At my hearing, while the opposing counsel was dressed professionally, spoke confidently and knew all his facts, McKenzie did not meet those same standards of professionalism. In her presentation of my case she often looked up and to the right, a sign that she was trying to remember or trying to formulate what to say. She even stated some facts of the case incorrectly in front of the judge. Part of our request was allowed to go to trial (which my ex wanted completely dismissed) and part of the opposing party's request was granted. The outcome wasn't all bad, but I was disappointed in the way she represented me. I spent a lot of extra money correcting the documents over and over.

Trevor Fugate took over my divorce case after my previous lawyer, whom I'd only worked with for a couple weeks, left the practice for another firm. He caught up quickly with the particulars of my case, was great at responding to my emails, and explained everything going on clearly. He was also quite personable and easy to chat with for the five to six hours we were together in mediation. And last but not least, when my soon-to-be-ex-husband's lawyer kept (repeatedly) dropping the ball and stalling progress on the case, Trevor took it upon himself to do the other lawyer's job for him, pro bono, and push my divorce through the court. Great guy all around.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
