Ms. Hobbs is worth every cent I spent! From the initial call to the final paperwork, she and her staff were there for me, even when I floundered about. They were very understanding, but still got the job done, my paperwork was in on time, and I am very pleased with the outcome. Their professionalism is stellar.

I was oh so thankful that a friend referred me. Danyese was a god sent when I met her. Allowing me to make 2 payments for the 2500.00 retainer. However, was adamant that I file against my ex before he did me. She assured me it would be done. A month later I contacted her about a hearing I had in lex co from my ex vs. me (which still stands). I questioned her & not only did she not answer my question...blew me off as it was "no big deal"?!? Thankfully, the judge awarded me a discovery of my exes income. I am not aggressive (which has hurt me in the end) ...but am naive that my atty has me covered?? I asked her to meet me 15mins before the hearing b/c I did not know what to expect (my 1st rodeo w/ a lot of anxiety since I never hear from her). She questioned me "I can, but what do you want to talk about?". Did not hear from her after the discovery was awarded, I inquired before the hearing (after giving her all the subpoenas questioned). She emailed me back that she never heard anything back from the subpoenas requested (2 wks before my hearing as I contacted her). She said she would need more money since they didn't respond??? My new atty says they have no choice to respond?????

Hired Derrick for divorce. You can’t get hold of her unless she wants to talk to you and if she can’t get in touch with you she will drop you. I have yet to receive any type of statement or invoice of hours charged for my case and I asked several times with no solution and no answer as to why? Ms. Derrick was more help to my exes case than mine. She has a problem with client confidentiality. I do not recommend Julaan Derrick as a lawyer.

This lady, who has a small child herself, had me thrown in jail for my sperm donors attorney fees. She sentenced me too 30 days,I could get out when I paid my ex's attorney fees of $2300. I am an unemployed, single parent who home schools her son. Kimmons did not give me a chance to pay the money back over time, did not let me make arrangements for my child or his school work, she found me guilty of almost all the accusations, strictly on hear say and did not let my witnesses speak to prove these were lies. My son is 9 years old,his sperm donor wanted nothing to do with him and did not even meet him until he was 7 years old,he drinks and drives with my child in the vehicle but she didn't care about any of that. She was rude, nasty, biased and did NOT have the best interest of my child in mind.

Hired Parker to settle a construction dispute. She gave hourly fee and retainer if it went to court. After a initial contact with the contractor’s lawyer, she promptly disappeared from contact. Calls and emails went unanswered and office contacts with receptionist resulted in no information or contact. After 7-10 days, she contacted us, said she had taken a fall and injured herself. We made an offer to settle the case though her to the contactor. After an email several days later saying the contractor did not accept, we asked if she was willing to go to court. No response. Days latter, we tried to contact again with same question. Next response that came two days later was she would be willing to refer us to another lawyer as she had hoped it could be settled without litigation. Why tell us retainer fee for court if she was not going to court over the case?

Mr. Barker is a fantastic attorney! I cannot imagine having a better experience with my unpleasant divorce. He is confident, assertive, and has a strong presence in the courtroom (and it doesn't hurt that he is always in a well-fitting suit and has crazy good posture). My divorce was final about nine months ago and I still do not understand how I walked away in good shape! I was absolutely terrified of my husband and of the divorce process--I am fairly young, in school full-time, and my ex is not kind to say the least--but Mr. Barker walked me through the entire thing with compassion and wisdom. I genuinely felt that he listened to everything I said and fought for what I wanted and what was best for me. He was quick to return my calls if I had to leave a voicemail and always answered all of my questions (even those that were probably irrational). Bonus: I never ever felt like he was talking down to me or over my head. My ex-husband is nasty and spiteful, and Mr. Barker advocated for me in such a way that my ex actually played relatively nice AND he got me a good deal of money when I was expecting absolutely nothing! I know he got me more than what I should have gotten, and I am certain that this only happened because Mr. Barker was dedicated to my case and fought hard for me. His solutions were creative and realistic, and seriously he was so incredibly kind to me throughout the entire process!

I was charged with a DUI. Normally, I would have just used any attorney but unfortunately due to my employment any type of blemish on my driving record would have meant immediate termination. I did my research and consulted with three attorneys in the area that specialized in this area of law. I really did not want just any lawyer representing me. I did find that many lawyers were willing to take the case but really did not do a lot of DUI cases. I was quite apprehensive about being in a situation with an attorney who normally does not do a lot of DUI work. After consulting with Steve I found him to be candid and straightforward. He early on told me the positive points and negative points in my case. A close friend of mine had referred me to his office. I decided to retain him upon consultation. Steve and his office staff definitely went to "bat" for me and my case. In the end, I attained a dismissal due to various circumstances surrounding my case. I have never been in a situation like this before in my whole life. I felt much more confident knowing I had Steve and his office by my side. While I do not intend to have any more problems in the future I would always be a client if the need arises. When it is important and a lot is at stake, I would highly recommend anyone to use him as their lawyer.

I am writing this review as a warning to others so they will not have to go through what I went through with Jim Tucker and his firm. Divorce is already hard enough and drawn out, if you hire Mr. Tucker it will only bring you more stress and a guarantee that it will be drawn out for far longer then it needs to be. I hired Jim in July of 2016. He took on my case and assured me it would be an "easy case". After he took my money I didn't hear back from Jim for over 3 months. After countless emails and phone calls I reported the money spent to my credit card agency to try and get a refund. After getting this notification he apologized and seem interested in taking on my case again with a significant discount. Finally over a year later we still haven't even made it to mediation. Separation paperwork wasn't filed till end of October and my spouse didn't get served until January of 2016. I still to date have never seen my spouses response to the separation claim. 6 MONTHS after it was filed with the courts!!! It was like pulling teeth to get a response. The guy didn't seem to have a care in the world about my urgency and it seemed my case was the least important to him. I had to fire him and hire another attorney because it got to the point where I couldn't take it anymore. He was never prepared for meetings. Lost emails and paper work I had sent in countless times. Would NEVER respond to my emails or phone calls in a timely manor. Literally months would go by and I would maybe get an email from his paralegal that didn't even address all the questions I had. The divorce has gotten no where and it has been a year and a half sense I moved out and began living separately. Do yourself a favor and hire another Attorney. Lindsey Dasher is great and it has been night and day working with her compared to Jim Tucker.

Mr. Tucker and his associate where outstanding with the help they gave me securing my granddaughter and bringing her back home. I live in NC and my granddaughter was taken to SC by her mother at a supervised visitation. Mr. Tucker was very knowledgeable on the state to state laws and within a day we where able to find my granddaughter and bring her back home. The care they put into this was unbelievable. They made me truly feel that they cared as if this was their own family member. Going through a circumstance like this is no fun but Mr. Tucker took a lot of the worry away. Highly recommend him and the law firm.

My almost simple divorce case took almost a year. In almost every communication of a legal nature from his office there were typos, incorrect addresses and other errors which delayed things profusely. I don't know who is working in the office with him but they were messing up addresses and all other things on the documents and it was a constant battle to proofread and make sure everything was in order. In addition he had me pay 15 hours {over $2500> up front for what he described as a simple divorce "that you could almost just file yourself". He said it should be pretty much cut and dry and the only reason that it would be great to have a lawyer is to make sure that everything was filed properly with the clerk, and so forth. That being said it took almost a full year from the day I hired him to actually get this to court and get the divorce finalized even though the separation requirements for the state were fulfilled. Slow to respond and usually only by email unless it was no chick matter for him. He also said that at the end if it was as easy as he thought it would be that there would probably be some hours left over and those will be refunded to me but of course miraculously, and true lawyer fashion it was exactly the amount of hours that I paid for upfront. The only reason those extra hours would have even been spent will because of their mistakes anyway. Three stars for the outcome because of his knowledge, professionalism and experience, and it did get done the way I wanted it to turn out. I'd give it one star for overall value and the time it took was horrible Only recommend upfront if you understand it will take a while watch your paperwork and it's not going to be cheap. And don't expect a refund no matter what they tell you which I kind of knew but I was hoping for better

This women is terrible. If I could give zero stars I would. When my parents when through a divorce my mother came to her because she was trying to get me and my sister out of an abusive situation. She accused my mother of lying and made her cry in her office. She did not care and she only cares about money. She completely disregarded what my mom wanted and continued to accuse her of lying about being abused. My parents are now thankfully divorced and justice has been serviced for my mom by another lawyer who was decent enough to obviously know she wasn’t lying about being in an abusive relationship. I recently had to use Mr Welborn for a case and his manners are terrible and so his his secretary's. He will tell you he can gurantee he can get you off and its no problem. He doesn't know how to keep in contact with you and updated on your case. After a month went by without hearing from him I had to call him and ask for an update from his secretary and then it was late the next day before he called me back. He talks down to you and makes you feel like how you feel is stupid. I had a lot riding on this case and I felt he was ill prepared for it throughout the whole case. Then he didn't even show up for my court date. I called to ask what was going on and his secretary rudely stated that she had tried to call but couldn't get an answer on a Friday at 4:30 after I talked to her a 3:30 with no mention about no having to show up. When asked if she called the number given to call if no answer she stated she had not called it. Then she had ample amount of time to call the morning of the hearing and did not. The day of the trial the Judge and Solicitors office wanted to know why he didn't show up and that I had to represent myself. I received a rude letter needing my information after I had given it to him on several different occasions on how to reach me after he wasn't able to contact me on one occasion. It seemed like he just wasnt concerned about my case what so ever. He acted as if he was the greatest lawyer ever if he did anything concerning my case. I wanted a jury trial and he never pushed it.

Robert Butcher is a knowledgeable and caring attorney. He may be somewhat overwhelmed at times because I think he tries to help everyone and is in a small firm, but he was very very good at what he did. He has a lot of knowledge and is quick on his feet, he is very smart and capeable and never let us down. He made many successful court appearances and assisted to help us get an almost unheard of victory in our case! It is still ongoing but I am confident that he is going to see us through it all! I think he is a great person, as is his wife and I do recommend him/them and the Camden Law Firm!

From the beginning of the process, to the end of the process, Robert Butcher stumbled, bumbled, and mumbled his way through the process. He failed to notify me of my court date, causing me to miss it. As a result, my wife received a large amount of child support ($770 per month, for 1 child, 1 visitation per month... and I only make $32k per year!). Not only was he incompetent, he failed to return phone calls and answer vital questions relating to child support payment procedures and status updates. In addition, my wife was allowed to take all of my belongings, including personal belongings that I had prior to the marriage. She also destroyed my brand new home without repercussion. I have not seen my daughter now for 4 months and 6 days. He's also refused to refund the retainer and I'm now forced to seek legal action against him to recoup my losses. You are better off representing yourself.

Became very clear early on in our case that extreme partiality went towards the person with more money. We were dealing with a man that had a long history of abuse, stalking, and a known sexual predator that also had a history of pushing drugs on women and selling them. Yet very little investigation was done on this man. Many requests of well checks on child were completely ignored. Best interest of a child will not be taken seriously.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
