They did the bare minimum for our case. They avoided filing blatant contempt against the opposing party. Amber Bighorse and her employees did not fight for us. When we finally decided to get a different attorney, her Paralegal claimed that they couldn't share our file through DropBox because it was too large. Two weeks later, it somehow magically worked. Finally. Lots of excuses, unanswered emails, contempt filings not being filed. I strongly advise you to find a better firm to handle your case.

He represented me in my divorce and was very responsive and helpful throughout the process, that is until I paid him. I received a portion of my settlement and he held $1000 in trust in case any issues came up. Since then, I have not gotten my settlement in it’s entirety, and have made several attempts to contact Joel because he has my money in trust. I have explained the issue via email, and in my many voicemails, all of which are documented. He recently (FINALLY) responded after several months asking what the issue was. Are you kidding me? And then he charged me for that response never acknowledging my actual issue. I am incredibly disappointed and am at a loss as to what to do. I will be going to the BBB with my documtation and going to the courthouse.

Mr. Flores represented my son in a difficult modification of parenting plan, in which he was trying to get custody of his little boy. Mr. Flores helped my son succeed in changing the custody. He kept us focused on legally how we should proceed in the case, but at the same time was very involved and caring about what my son and his little boy were going through. I would highly recommend Mr. Flores. He is a wonderful attorney!

Joel was hired by us in 2013 for child custody case. He got everything we were asking for granted and didn't cut corners. Joel has been available for any questions we had regarding any case we have. My mother-in-law works with Joel and he is an outstanding boss. I am very humbled to have him be apart of life journeys. He cares about the best interest of my step children and has never given us bad advice. I highly recommend Joel as an attorney.

Mr. Lombino represented me in what should have been a simple divorce. He dragged it out, to the tune of over $21,000 and ultimately was asleep at the wheel during the Settlement Hearing. My ex told me he and his attorney laughed at how stupid he was, giving up my pension and more than they had originally offered not to fight for!

Joe handled my divorce a few years ago, which dragged on because of my ex. It was the most devastating experience of my life, but Joe was a rock for me. My ex was a bully and gaslighter, and Joe was able to arrange things in a way that helped me feel safe. Joe is a great listener and is very attentive. He is also incredibly supportive. He was available basically 24/7 for me. He was also honest about what I might expect - he didn't just tell me what I wanted to hear. Attorney fees can be expensive - I knew that going in, but I paid a third of what my ex paid his attorney. A good friend referred me to Joe, and I am incredibly grateful.

I recently went through a very difficult divorce and I am very pleased that Mr.Lombino represented me in this matter. Mr. Lombino and his stalff are very proffessional and were on point with every detail along the way to getting the divorce completed. There are a lot of emotions one goes through during a divorce and Mr.Lombino was very attentive and answered every question that I had during the process. I would not hesitate to refer anyone to Mr. Lombino for any legal assistance and if I am ever in the need for council he will be the person I contact.

Tarah was assigned to me for a contempt motion but I ended up hiring her to fight an unethical opposing lawyer. Without her I would have been railroaded by opposing council from a big name firm. Tarah knew all the laywer's tricks and fought for me and my kids. It's taken almost 2 years but there's an end in sight and Tarah has been worth EVERY penny!!

I have been around some bad people throughout my lifetime, but Tara Wagner is the most atrocious human we have ever associated with. She treated my wife like a dog and made her feel awful about herself. She would yell at her and degrade her for asking simple questions. It reminded my wife of the abusive relationship she was in prior to me with her daughters father. Tara has major anger issues and extreme bouts of rage when she doesn't get her way or you annoy her. I am not surprised at all by her negative reviews on here stating that she is a narcissist and that she is being investigated. I do find it astonishing that she has not had her license revoked yet, but I have no doubt in my mind especially with all of these horrendous reviews that she will. Narcissistic people make great attorneys. The one review states that she is a "master of deception". That's exactly why narcissists make great attorney's. Do yourself and your mental health a big favor by avoiding this very horrible human.

My case was mishandled due to Barbara Jo's awful demeanor in court with opposing counsel and the Judge. To be specific, Judge Arend. I heard that she was a "go-getter", but she overcharged me, rarely, if ever, returned emails/phone calls, and her aggressive style in court was repeatedly rude and unsuccessful. This was on a custody case in 2010-2011 and I would never use her again.

Robert represented me in a divorce case. I agreed to the QDRO after it was explained in laymens terms. What I was told was that after a period of 60 months my contributions to an annuity would be terminated. Also payments would be terminated upon my ex spouses remarriage. Both totally untrue. I had another attorney review documents recently due to the fact the 60 month period is about to expire. BE CAREFUL, have another attorney review documents!

Dolores WILL NOT protect your children. My experience with her was one of the worst situations because she refused to research extensively and my children, who were being abused by a family member, were re-victimized by them because she failed to protect them. I had a very similar experience to some of the other reviewers who were traumatized by Dolores and I wish she was never allowed to practise law again or be involved with family law.

If this woman is assigned to your case......RUN! Her and her mouthy secretary, Michelle, were absolutely horrible to deal with. There is no communication at all. It would seem as if Ms. Sarandos is more interested in "padding her income" all the while having Ms. Nicks do the majority of the work. It does not matter how you try to contact, there will never be a response. The only time I received responses is when I went into a court and talked to a judge. Then like magic there was a response.

If you get this woman assigned to your case run like H. Both her and her mouthy secretary were absolutely horrible to deal with. The only thing that she had to do was to request a psychological evaluation for my ex son in law whose family was molested my granddaughter while my ex son in law watched. The results from his psychological evaluation would have put him in supervised visitations and kept my granddaughter safe. Instead Dolores allowed the family that was molested her to have visitations with her where they molested her again. She told the court that this was just a family feud even when there were several third party professionals willing to go to court for my granddaughter. She had the power to make a difference but she basically said that she had already written her review and wasn't going to do anything else about it. Several people called her to let her know what they had heard out of my granddaughters mouth but she never called them back. I sent her an eight page email begging for help for my granddaughter but she actually complained about that in court. Just say NO, NO and No if you are ever forced to use her. She did an extremely bad job and never protected my granddaughter like a guardian at litem is supposed to do. I certainly hope nothing ever happens to one of her grand children.

Maybe it was because it was just a lowly state child support case where she wasnt getting private money but this person is completely unprofessional, argumentative, deceitful, and abusive. My first interaction she tried informing me they wouldnt collect for a few months because they didnt have receipts in a timely manner which I tried to explain as to why but she started yelling over me and I ended up disconnecting the call It was a very simple issue.. current support did not include additional care that had started so it needed an amendment. Childcare is an ongoing regular cost. I did not think it would be this difficult to figure out. Just prior to the phone hearing, she wanted to get combative again and tried to lie about contacting me about paperwork that was inadmissible (she never contacted me during the 2 week window between submission and court date). She referred to my proof of payment for childcare as paltry but never contacted me to advise that it was somehow inadequate and that she needed more. If she just does it for the government, not much can be done but if shes practicing in private, go elsewhwre.

In 2020 I was wrongfully arrested by an officer in training with his FTO at his side after calling for assistance for a verbal dispute with my spouse in Thurston County. After she attempted to force unwanted contact, I instinctively picked up the phone and called 911. That was a mistake. 14 months later, after a NCO was developed from the false arrest, I was persuaded by Eric Schuler as my public defense to take a plea or I would go to jail, even though he understood I was innocent. He had plenty of photos, audio, transcripts, interviews, etc to show I was violated. I would have went to jail and lost everything all over again if I stood up for myself according to him. This is because there were accusations of me violating the NCO and emails standing up for my son that was about to turn 5 as the government was promoting these harmful vaccinations for that age group and telling my ex to pay the house that almost went under foreclosure due to her neglect. We're also both Navy veterans and in truth, I have no criminal background. The comradery and brotherhood is a lie. If you want to be let down, you're in the right spot.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
