I hired Tim Ballard for a child custody case during a sensitive period following the loss of our daughter to cancer. While Tim seemed personable, the service and value I received were unsatisfactory. My experience with Mr. Ballard was costly and inefficient compared to previous attorneys. Over $8000 and nearly a year later, the only significant progress was one hour of mediation. The costs seemed excessive: $2000 for mediation prep and almost $100 for a brief email. Additionally, I questioned the 5.5 hours billed (Tim does his own billing and invoicing. One month I received several months billing all of a sudden) for mediation prep half billed on a day when Tim was handling another case. Several months I’m still waiting on discovery questions, child support worksheet, and some bills of my ex spouse to be paid. All of which are “in the works” Communication issues were persistent. I often had to rebrief him on basic case details, yet was billed for these updates. Despite being promised legal aid assistance, this help materialized late, failing to restore my confidence in the firm. The process was drawn out, with mediation dates constantly delayed from May to July to November. I felt my case wasn't advocated for effectively, particularly in dealings with the opposing attorney. Now in the process of switching lawyers, I'm disheartened by the substantial financial and time investment with minimal progress. I'm open to sharing more details with those considering this firm. A major concern was the inefficient communication costing over half the total fees. I preferred meetings over emails for efficiency, but this approach wasn't adopted. There were also missed opportunities, like enrolling my daughter in a new school, and periods where Tim was difficult to contact, though active on social media liking the opposing attorneys instagram posts. In summary, I expected more empathy and proactivity in handling my case. This experience felt like a financial and emotional drain during an already difficult time.

Meghan Bodie was very compassionate, professional and made my divorce process smoother than I could have ever imagined. She took time to answer any questions I had and helped me every step of the way. I moved during the process, and she was able to complete my filing and finish everything across the distance. I highly recommend - couldn't have done it without her!

I am a single mother of 2 children, father showed very little interest in our children and had many addictions . After father tested positive for drugs and proof of how mentally unstable dad was she made an agreement to allow our children to be supervised by grandpa who left them alone with father while he was intoxicated. Ms. Bodie, gave me terrible advise and put my infant and toddler in harm's way. She did not show up for court and sent her paralegal who told the judge " I dont know the case well enough to answer that question" even the judge responded "then why are you here" I was also wondering the same thing. I was still charged for that day also. Many emails of not being responded to. Ms. Bodie has no idea what she is doing and charged me for a bunch of paperwork that she never showed or had signed by a judge so therefore, I could not use a single document in future court situations. She was not bold, she had very little knowledge of what my rights were, and did not fight for me or my children. Honestly, this lady is heartless and money hungry. Shame on you for taking advantage of me and my children knowing our situation Meghan... After almost 4,000 dollars later, she did not help me further my case but actually set me back almost a year and a half and STILL have not established child support and father is still playing games and not responsible for following anything court or lawyers requested. It seemed like Meghan was not for me but for the father. I also know another family that she screwed over big time and put their foster child in harm's way when they wanted to adopt and give this child a better life. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HER OR HER LAW FIRM. I'm surprised that she had positive reviews.

Jef represented my daughter and throughout the duration of the case, he was always there. There wasn’t a moment we felt that we were just a number or overlooked. The outcome was better than we ever hoped for, and that is solely due to Jeff’s hard work and great reputation. Tim, his partner was also incredible and helpful. Not a better firm in the world.

Non responsive , irresponsible time management , etc. hired this gentleman and paid $1,000 before ever meeting him. After being rescheduled 3 times due to him “ being busy /sick/ out of the office I knew then and there he wouldn’t be able to properly represent me. While waiting in the waiting room , On our well awaited first meeting , I was groped on by another client of his whom was around the age of 60-70. I didn’t press charges since the other ladies in office were so sweet about removing me from the area he was in. Properly settled and appreciated. I wish I could say the same for my experience with the attorney I hired. I was rushed in my first meeting. I believe it lasted 3 mins before being abruptly told “ to reschedule since he was busy for another court date “ after that any phone calls in regard to my case and or emails were never answered and I never saw him again. My case was dropped by him about 8 days prior to my docket call ...If you’re looking for an attorney that is on top of his game , responsive , there for you , and has great time management , then he’s not going to be the right person for you. I had a simple harassment case and now have another attorney. If I had seen these reviews prior to hiring I would’ve went with someone else. Mr. Clemmons was very responsible in picking up his pieces in dropping my case last minute and offered wonderful alternative routes as well as was responsive in a very timely manner. If you need to hire anyone from this firm I’d suggest clemmons , sensing , but not grimes. I just don’t think I got what I wished which was to be represented wonderfully.

Attorney Fair-Miller helped me with my case when I was in a very difficult situation and about to lose my home. She worked diligently and quickly to help me. I’ve had to contact her several times over the past few years and she has always responded promptly to help me resolve my issues. Recently I needed to purchase a vehicle while under my Chapter 13 and called her to help me through the process. Within a few weeks we were in court with approval granted for me to purchase a vehicle. Attorney Fair-Miller is very knowledgeable of the law and highly effective in getting the job done. I hired Veronica Fair-Miller to handle a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. I thought everything was going well until my discharge. She assured me the accounts I wanted to reaffirm (keep) were being reaffirmed. She LIED!! She discharged ALL my accounts including my home and my car! So now, I have ZERO accounts to rebuild my credit on even though I am paying these two major accounts (my mortgage and my car) every month. I have nothing to show for making these on time payments and I have had my mortgage for almost 14 years and my car for almost 3 years. I contacted her immediately via text message, phone calls, & email once I found out she neglected to do the paperwork with both creditors to reaffirm these loans before the discharge. She NEVER returned any of my messages! She is a coward and a liar. She is lazy. She took my money and did the minimal amount of work required to make sure I got a Bankruptcy. She didn't even have the guts to respond back to my messages or try to repair her mistakes prior to the discharge before it was too late. She should have her license to practice law taken away. If you're smart, you will not hire this attorney for any reason. She will not provide satisfactory service. Spend your money wisely and go with someone with great reviews. Take it from someone who has experienced her service first hand.

I would like to respond to Mr. Jonathan's comments. First, I mailed him a contact letter. He never responded. After 3 weeks I called him. He stated that he was out of the country but would be returning in a couple of weeks. I told him to contact me when he came back to the USA, so that we could meet and discuss his case. He DID NOT contact me. I further waited almost 3 months with no contact. I filed a motion to withdraw from his case. The other attorneys have set the case for trial. Mr. Jonathan then called me approximately 2 weeks prior to the trial date. I'm sorry I cannot represent a client who will not contact me until 2 weeks prior to trial. Further, Mr. Jonathan did not hire me. I am appointed by the court.

There are not words for what a great job Gwynn has does in my Granddaughter's custody case. You do not know a great Lawyer until you have experienced a bad one. We have been in an over a year battle with no support from a team of not one but two Lawyer's until a neighbor recommended Gwynn. Thank God because we were at our wits end but she has truly saved the day so to speak. Gwynn has followed through, kept in touch, worked long hours, and spoke loudly for my Granddaughter's safety. I had a team of 2 lawyers for a custody case that had been going on in DeKalb County for over a year, after moving back to Sumner County, Gywnn was referred to me by my neighbor. Gywnn promptly got all the documents and transferred the case to Sumner County where I reside. In comparison, she has been very proactive and done more work than my team of two previous attorneys did together in a much shorter time. We have been to court several times now, and Gywnn has always succeeded in getting me the proper orders I needed to keep my daughter and I safe. Her staff is very professional, and her office is a pleasant atmosphere located within walking distance to the court house. She has always promptly returned my phone calls and e-mails, and has always kept me up to speed on what is happening. I will continue to use her for any further legal actions now or in future I may have. I highly recommend her to anyone with legal issues.

My response was I definitely would not receive if it’s not asked for. My hopefully soon to be ex husband was physically, emotionally abusive. I sent Megan pictures of bruises, a black eye and a picture of my dog bleeding from my husband breaking a wood bar stool on his head. I sent her recordings of him threatening to kill me and wishing me to die. There was an instant that he showed up knocking and looking thru the windows where I am staying. I asked her for an order of protection. Several times. She did not attempt to even consider it. Extremely disappointed.

Attorney Jake Old did a terrible job on my case against Capitiol One Bank. Mr. Old sent the notice to Capitol One to the wrong address in Utah even after I provided him with Capitol One's address in Illinois. Mr Olds letter to Capitol One stated that he would sue Capitol One for triple damages and attorney fees if they didn't remove a $250.00 transaction fee when I paid off my account. On 7-18-24 I received a letter from Attorney Jake Old stating Capitol One did not respond to his letter and he didn't have the time or money to continue my case. He had the case for 3 months and his incompetence allowed Capitol One to add late fees and interest to my account. If Mr Old wasn't willing to do what he said he would do if Capitol One did correct their mistake he should have never accepted my case. I would have been better off dealing with Capitol One on my own. I will be filing a formal complaint against Mr. Old with the Tennessee Bar Association in the near future. He would not call me back. Twice I went to his office for a meeting he scheduled and he did not come out and get me, he would just apologize and say he would call me and then I would not hear back from him. Me and my ex have not been together in 12 years so we owned no property or anything together and it took him over a year to get the divorce done for somebody that has had very limited contact with the other party . My recommendation is do not use him find someone else.

Attorney was unable to resolve my case.. attorney Clinton did not attempt to resolve my legal manner as I requested... the case I was involved in was a family matter and centered on land partition. Unfortunately when we went to our first court hearing, my atty and the other defendant and plaintiff (s) attorney along with the judge decided in a back room meeting to have the land sold and no attempt to partition the land.. my main goal was for my father’s land to be saved. Not until later was I was not told by two different attorneys working this case that she did not work on my behalf to resolve the case as I requested. I was very dissatisfied with the resolution and how the events were hidden from me by my paid attorney. I will not use her again or recommend her to anyone.. I would recommend if your case is important to you and your not looking to simply settle then use a large law firm that has staff working in your favor.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
