Josh Grube was my attorney on a 2nd OWI. He is caring, down to earth and not judgemental. He was able to negotiate a miracle on my behalf. I was also taking some proactive measures as well. I do have a felony background, and even with that Josh was able to negotiate my sentence to the minimum. He was always very available. I never had to wait days for a reply. I was blessed to have him as my attorney and hope you will consider him for your legal needs.

Greer Black with Schmidlkofer, Toth, Loeb and Drosen did exactly what we had hoped. He did an outstanding job resolving a contentious situation and was able to achieve the best possible outcome. We are very fortunate and thankful Greer took our case and the services he provided were worth every penny.

I was and is still very disappointed as Attorney Basil M Loeb wasn't able to collect or retrieve funds owed to me by the Online Training Academy in Wiscousin after I had won my case against them in an arbitration. It was over $10,000 the arbitration ordered Online Training Academy to refund to me and I never got a dime.

Called 9 months ago to get set up with a lawyer through LaRowe Gerlach. Just for standard business paperwork and whatnot. I was directed to Max and had a phone call with him, where he said he’d work with us. I sent over the documents he requested and then proceeded to wait for a reply. Over the next few months I called in several times, figuring he had simply been busy, but always spoke to a secretary who said he would call me. He never did. I eventually asked if he was not interested in having us as a client and was assured he was. Finally I called asking to get linked up with a different partner and the secretary refused to direct me to another partner. Saying Max would call me. It has been over 9 months and I have still only heard from max the one time. I wish I could speak on behalf of any other partner, but apparently the firm as a whole won’t let you switch once someone has dibs on you, even if they don’t actually intend on doing any work with you. Mostly frustrated that they wouldn’t just say “we are not interested” and instead proceeded to waste my time. Very unprofessional.

I contacted LaRowe Gerlach LLP regarding a legal matter that I wanted to ask them to represent me on. The operator transferred me to Mr. Joseph Hesler’s voicemail , as he would be the most qualified attorney at the firm in that matter. After I left him a detailed message, a few minutes later he calls me back and started treating me like I am some sort of a spam caller. He was very rude and asked me how did I get his number and why did I call him. After I briefly explained that I left him a voicemail and I had called the office to seek representation in a legal matter, he said that he no longer accepts new clients and hung up on me. Of course this surprised and shocked me at the same time to why an attorney would do that to a potential client. I called the office again to talk to the operator. After I told her what happened, her answer was: “Well, you might as well keep looking around.” So there is my experience with this firm. I’ve had contact with some other law firms and attorneys in the past, but nobody had treated me and talked to me like these guys did. So do yourself a favor and “keep looking around”. They are not worth your time or your money.

In 2014 I was arrested in racine for disorderly conduct or criminal damage to property or domestic abuse or fighting . I'm not sure cause it has changed depending on the situation. This after a mysterious phone call by a still unknown person that probably just was thrown out of my house for trying to plot against me for financial gain. See in 2014 I was the first geoge flyod I was assaulted in cuffs by 12 officers in racine County jail. Before even arriving to jail I didn't have any injury to my face shoulders back neck hips ...my shoes were on my feet not cut off. I was not being slammed on a wall ...lifted by my cuffed arms and legs facing down tearing both my shoulders and hips. A knee firmly planted in my neck while my legs were in the air and whn I gasped for air and struggled to breathe and told the officers I couldn't breathe ...the officer told me if I could talk I could breathe. After being offered water by a in house nurse, I was strapped to a chair and hooded much like you would see a pow after being captured and tortured. After several hours of agonizing pain I was carried limply to my cell where I remained unprocessed in due time as required by law for 3 days offered no medical assistance or a phone call. I was released on 300 dollars 4 days after the incident on what was supposedly disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property. At this point I'm unsure of what is damaged because the only thing happening whn the police arrived is me throwing out already damage property THAT BELONGS TO ME. I look to find an attorney after being not only wrongfully arrested but assaulted after. I found him at Henry law office in Kenosha for 5000 plus. After what I would call the quickest 30 mins ever to determine ones fate. I ended up pleading no contest and being charged with disorderly conduct with a domestic enhancement. I was told that because my girlfriend at the time was there even though not a single thing happened other than being shocked and having the house illegal searched and and her cornered and questioned and her going to court after still being confused as to why I was even arrested. Still was enough for a domestic enhancement according to Wisconsin and only the fact that the police showed up at all was enough for disorderly conduct. And that the jury would be constantly reminded that despite the facts of the case this is the law. And tht I should take the plea deal that I'm being given even though I have never got to make a statement the fact I was assaulted by 12 officers means nothing even though it sounds like those officers felt they were judge jury and executioner. The fact the the only property damage that occurred was to my already broken wardrobe and to property owned by me and broken by racine county police. I was in record for all of less then 30 mins throughout the months of deliberation that never changed. He insisted that he worked for racine and it would be this way and easier than a trial...however swiftly added that I should try to have it pardoned in the future because it is such a weak case. Personally racine da office called in a favor on him .....and did I mention no charges on me or the police for their action ...huh...not even mentioned one time in court either. Only a single sentence in the report indicating any action at all occupied between me and 13 officers that night. I have permanent damage from the night of Jan 18 2014. 2 torn shoulders 2 torn hips neck damage back damage face damage night terrors every night. Since thn I have had 2 disc's in my back fixed and one of 2 hips fixed and the fixed one is not doing well the police stretched out both Achilles one tore already the other could at any time. He did nothing but side with racine county and their lies and brutality towards me..he never assured me justice at all and it ultimately allowed for me to be assaulted again Nov 14 2017 ...by just as many officers in my garage under my truck .....no charges filed

I retained Tiffany on the advice that my estranged spouse had hired an attorney known to be difficult to negotiate with. Divorce is never easy, but she was able to help me navigate a settlement that I believe is very fair to me. She was proactive in her communication and I really appreciate the way she kept my expectations managed and she never over-promised along the way. For me the end was very fair to me and fair to my ex, neither of us were taken advantage of and that's all I ever wanted when I hired Tiffany.

I had a post divorce judgement case going on 3 years. Tiffany came in and gave me great advice and my case settled before trial. I would highly recommend her - she knows the law and my ex is an attorney and she didn’t back down to him or his lawyers. She was the third attorney I had hired on my case.

Tiffany was good to start with (about 3 months) but when my ex's lawyer got aggressive she backed down and led me to believe it was in my best interest to give him what he wanted. I ended up paying a huge amount of marital support AND child support. She also told me I had to pay support before I had orders. By the time I switched lawyers we were 1.5 years into the process and I had spent $10,000 for nothing. She was always on vacation and didn't return my calls near the end. Come to find out she was shopping for a new job. Once I got a new lawyer my case was done in a month and my bill was reduced by half because all she had done was print off my emails and save them in a binder. I recommend you get someone else!

Divorce creates a flurry of emotions, mixed with "advice" from friends and family who all have their "well this is what I did in my divorce...and you should do X, Y or Z...." Tiffany reduces this into logical thinking. She doesn't tell you what you want to hear, but tells you what it is based on law and experience. False promises and unreasonable expectations are checked at the door. A biggest fear that people will tell you is that the "attorney just wants to keep fighting to make more money" Each case is different, and you want someone who knows the law and is realistic and direct about your case. You want Tiffany on your side.

I live in Minnesota and my ex moved with my two kids in Wisconsin she does not want me to see my kids because of sexual misconduct charge she press on me for being innocent after probation of 7 years. The charged was dismissed and dropped leading to sponged my record but still Minnesota wouldn't give me permission to see my kids because my ex was making up stories against me . I took about 3 lawyer in Minnesota and they all failed for me to even have supervise visitation. My case was later transferred to Wisconsin because the kids are living in Wisconsin. I took this lawyer to take a last chance in my life trying to see my kids she was my 3rd lawyer . Tiffany is wonderful and very patient so much technique ,she does not panic in court room. i don't know how to describe her but she is very caring lawyer. we all know money pay our bill but among my lawyer she doesn't put money first meaning she is not on your neck for money before finishing your case and after taking a retainer fee . like that it make me pay her and happy to continue with her . after 7 years i will see my son because of Tiffany schramm wh won on my case after 7 yeas. she took 4 month to finish this case. Listening to her was the best. she is always ready to give you advice. I noticed from her when judge give her permission to talk ,every word coming from her mouth has some kind of explanation of why and how . She make sure she know your case before going to see the judge. GOD BLESSS you and have more case to free innocent people

Having never been in this position before, I felt very vulnerable and unsure. I wanted what was best for me, but I also didn’t want to break the bank in the process. Tiffany took away all the worry, broke down the big, scary jargon and put all the possibilities on the table. She told me what her goal was and she accomplished it, with the best outcome possible! She was very patient with me, always returned my countless emails and phone calls within hours or a day. She was a miracle worker and absorbed a lot of my stress. Organized, professional and compassionate are just a few words I’d use to describe Tiffany. I highly suggest her services for anyone trying to resolve misdemeanor matters.

We hired this lawyer to represent a member of our family. We feel that he did not do an adequate job in representing this person and did not even defend this person at all, but agreed with what the district attorney said, not even asking for a reduction in the sentence or other options so that this person did not have to sit in jail and be away from his/her family. Our impression was that, we thought the lawyer's job was to help whom he is representing. Plus the person's past record was brought up and James Finn did not even defend that either. Besides, the time was already served for the past cases and were irrelevant to the present case. When the lawyer was walking out of court, after the sentencing hearing, he turned to his person that he represented and said something to the effect of that after reading this person's record, he knew that he could not help this person. Now is that something that you should not say to your client? We paid him money to say this to his client? WOW!!! How unprofessional!!!! We were so taken aback when we heard this! He never should have said that at all! We would never want anyone to experience the humiliation as he did towards this person. We would not recommend him to anyone.

When searching for an attorney that can deal with a difficult situation with a difficult individual on other end, Attorney Crothers seemed to fit the bill. She spoke of being aggressive and said she can help. That unfortunately was not the case. I was paying for emails where she asked "what you think or this" rather than stating what the law is and how we should go about something. I was paying to lose time with my children even though if we went by law on wisconsin Stat. 767.41 it never should have happened. Not to mention completely addressing me by another individuals name in an email to the opposing counsel and GAL. It seemed as if it was only about the paycheck rather than helping. Putting me in a difficult position once I decided to start representing myself. Maybe its different when dealing with divorce but would not recommend otherwise.

He was so disappointing..he never acted like he cared abt my case, idk if it was bcuz I didn't have a lot of $ or he's getting old- who knows but basically I could have gotten more from my divorce aggreement..he would email me weeks after I had a question and be on a completely different subject..he walked past me in the hallway at court telling my husband at the time and his lawyer I wasn't there yet- so embarrassing..that shows me how invested he was..even had the nerve to send me $200 bill after it was all said and done - part of that bill broken down was for responding to emails that were on a completely different subject than I was talking abt..he was very disorganized- at least w me..once I even caught a financial discrepancy in my ex s financial disclosure- wasn't that his job? Don't waste your money please... I figured out he cost me $650 a month for the next 10 years- $ I was entitled to which he didn't catch..

Through my job I qualify for a free 30 minute consultation with a lawyer. I was referred to Michael Lim. Michael called me before he needed to go into court, and chose to talk to me over the phone for maybe 15 minutes. I'm new with talking to a lawyer so I wasn't sure where to begin. I didn't have a lot of time to go over much of what is going on with my situation, most of my questions or contact information for people involved. To make a long story short, Michael was very fast to dismiss me and gave me very little advice. I guess it is because it was a free consultation. Maybe if you have a lot of money and are not displaced from your home causing you to be behind on bills due to weekly motel fees, there might be potential that you will be treated as a person with feelings. Maybe if he is getting paid he would want to make time to help you instead of making you feel inadequate, stupid or like a burden. It is a shame that some people care more about money than what they can do to make a difference. Since Christmas night I have been struggling. None of the things going on are my fault. Thankfully I qualify to be referred to a new lawyer. I just hope this new one cares and is compassionate. I do not recommend Michael Lim to anyone, especially if you are poor.

Michael Lim helped us navigate a challenging case regarding a plaintiff against us. Michael was strategic in his deliberations that resulted in a successful outcome. He outlined his strategy with us in advance and met us to review the background and the pending court appearances. He outlined multiple levels of strategy that could be invoked depending on the developments in the trial. We felt very confident with his representation and would not hesitate to retain his services again if needed. He was professional in the court room environment and clearly expressed the legal parameters of the case. In summary, we could not have asked for a better legal representative for our case.

I allowed him to represent me 2 days into trial before relieving him of his dutys to represent myself. As an attorney he failed in the worst way , if not for my having a basic understanding of what an attorney is suppose to do I would be serving a forty year sentence. I am very late writing this review, as my divorce was a few years ago, but I wish I had never hired Ms. Arreazola. I was served with contempt papers because my spouse's lawyer had sent messages to the Arreazola office about things wanted out of the house belonging to spouse. I was NEVER notified. I found out after I fired her and picked up all correspondence pertaining to the proceedings. I called her very upset one day when my spouse was banging on the door and wouldn't leave and she never called me back. I was stuck with bills that should have been split between my spouse and me, but she never did anything with the paperwork I provided showing the amounts and what they were for and it was over $3,000 dollars. She did very little for the retainer paid, and I had to pay the same retainer to the next attorney. Would have saved me a lot to have chosen this attorney the first time instead of Patricia Arreazola.

This was the best thing I could have ever done by hiring such an excellent and compassionate attorney to deal with my ongoing divorce challenges. My initial attorney was not so good, to put it lightly. So I have had to go back and have adjustments made to do with contempt motions and child custody. I can’t say enough about the people at Arrezola Law. They took this on, corrected the issues I thought were completely hopeless in my divorce, and made the outcome for my children and myself much happier. They thoroughly explained everything to me and treated me with kindness and compassion throughout the whole process. I wish I had hired them at the beginning, because I feel these challenges would have never have come up. I can’t thank them enough. Well worth every penny!!!!

Best lawyer I’ve had! Represented me on a case where crooked police charged me with a gun I’ve never seen before. At our initial meeting she believed me! Which was a huge relief because my previous lawyer (Mark Pecora) suggested I take a plea!! Ann went to trial and fought for me like it was her freedom in the line! She shed tears, even almost got held in contempt! I had five police lying in me in court! Five! Four officers & a sergeant (all no longer officers, felons now) coming to court lying. Well she went in there and beat the case!! Very passionate about her work and will fight for her clients.

My family and I hired her for my son in 2016. She told me that because someone jumped on his case (that was in jail) and was going to testify against him. She (Anne Bowe) told me that if my son didn't take the D.A. offer of 15 years then she would drop him (my son) as a client and testify against him. So, I would advise anyone not to hire her at all.

Gricel was my lawyer for my divorce. I am so grateful to have had her help me, I had met with other lawyers but they didn't understand how to handle international divorce. Gricel had tons of experience with international clients and was very honest and effective in court. She explained everything to me, helped me to prioritize what I wanted in the divorce and understand what I could reasonably expect from the judge. We were able to come to an agreement on our home and other important items and Gricel fought to help me have full time with my children. She understood what I was going through, was sympathetic and very professional. Gricel went through all the questions she anticipated which made the actual court less intimidating. She was efficient and didn't waste a lot of lawyer time making a huge bill like my friends have had happen to them. I hope you do not have a divorce, but if you have one you should hire Gricel. I highly recommend her for any divorce or child support case especially if there are international issues.

Sarah was on top of everything. She is for your child's best interest no matter what. She was appointed to me by referral. I went into court with no lawyer for a custody hearing and whatever I forgot to ask she would ask whoever was on the stand. With her on my side my daughter is now safely in our home for 2 years now. I would never chose anyone else for this job. Great woman!

Larry is smarter than your average lawyer. His 40 years of experience picked up on things that other expensive younger attorneys never thought about in my case which wasn't easy. He isn't about just "winning" his case, rather he looks at the big picture. He has a good heart and my family's life would not be the same today without him! His assistant Linda is always kind and courteous as well. Don't go anywhere else.

Wouldn't answer emails or phone calls. Two to three weeks later we would finally get a callback from him and when we asked him questions about our case it was like he blow us off not caring about our concerns. Doesn't explain things well, you have to constantly remind him of things that you want done. We also had to basicly pull his teeth to get anything done for us if he would even do them at all.

I have worked one on one with Yadira helping a family member with a very bitter divorce. Yadira was EXTREMELY patient, kind, understanding, and very professional regarding everything with the divorce! She has always done her best to calm our nerves and take care of things immediately when they need to be addressed. She is very prompt at responding to calls and emails. Yadira is honest and compassionate and definitely the type of attorney that has her client's very best interest in mind. I would recommend Yadira to anyone looking to help ease the burden of divorce.

I had the privilege of working with Yadira while going through a very tough Divorce. I honestly cannot tell you how much she went out of her way to see that the outcome of my case was not only fair but was also in the best interest of me and my future needs. I would highly recommend her to family and friends who are in need of someone who can get the job done. Divorce isn't easy, and honestly, I don't know what I would have done without her. From the very first day I meet her she was honest, knowledgeable, professional and very compassionate in dealing with my situation.

Very unprofessional. Rarely answer phone calls or voicemail. She we do the opposite of what she says in many cases. If she says she will call you tomorrow it won't be until next week. When time came to the courtroom, she barely had any argument to the defendant's attorney. As a result, I am now in debt because I could not obtain the funds to pay off my medical bills for an accident that should have never happened. On top of that I still have to pay her. This was a real regret. If you are in a dire situation please don't go here.

My family and I are extremely unhappy with the representation that was provided. Olmr was blatantly rude, disrespectful, condescending, and did not work in our best interest. Dennis came highly recommended. After my initial meeting with him, I had a good feeling about him, however boy was I taken for it. He did not fight for me, made deals that I didn't agree to, etc. Unfortunately, I trusted him and he told me that was the way it was. After the issue was over, I talked with several other divorce attorneys who told me things that should have been done, that were not or how to handle things differently. This is not sour grapes. The man did nothing he said he was going to do in the initial meeting. When I asked him about it, he just threatened and said you are going to lose. The biggest waste of a lot of money and my child will now suffer the ramifications of his ineptitude

Dennis is an amazing attorney!!! He is honest, fair, and trustworthy. He gives it to you straight, does not get your hopes up, does not count his chickens before they are hatched, and is an all around good man. He does what's best for his clients. He gives amazing advice and thinks things through first. He always seems to be one step ahead. His secretary Joan is amazing and attentive as well. Both pay close attention to detail. I am very pleased and grateful to have found Dennis. He made an amazing impact on my life and helped me gain primary placement of my kids when all hope seemed lost. I am forever indebted and grateful to this man!

Attorney Klein handled my divorce case flawlessly! Although the person I was divorcing made every attempt to make it most difficult to get it done and get equal custody of my child, Attorney Klein and his staff gave me proper advice throughout the entire process. I now am sitting here enjoying the best outcome I could have hoped for. In the beginning I had MANY questions about how things work and the staff was very helpful and patient with me. Looking back to the beginning of the case I have to give them lots of credit for how they handled all my questions at a time when my emotions running high. I highly recommend attorney Klein to anyone looking for someone who will produce results

I hired Mr. Klein after my first attorney failed to prepare for a court hearing and left me to pick up the pieces of a decision so wrong it does not bear repeating. Attorney Klein was straightforward from day one. He did not pull punches. He told me, in exact detail, what I had to do and what he was going to do. He never sugar coated that we had an uphill battle, but not for one second did I doubt he was in the battle with me. I don't need my attorney to pat my head and tell me warm fuzzy stories and give me hugs, I have friends for that. I don't need to walk out of my attorney's office feeling like I just had lunch with my best friend. I need to know, without a doubt, the attorney I hired is on my side 100% and is going to fight with me and for me. I have that with Mr. Klein. His professional staff is prompt and courteous; I have never had to wait days/weeks for a returned call. I know they see this stuff every day, but I never have been made to feel it didn't matter. I have nothing, but respect for Mr. Klein and his staff and would readily suggest his practice to anyone. His professional staff is prompt and courteous, I have never had to wait days/weeks for a returned call. I know they see this stuff every day, but I never have been made to feel it didn't matter.

When I sought a lawyer for my case, I first spoke to a few highly accredited Ivy League lawyers from Madison, and while I was tempted to go with them, they suggested that it might be worth looking into someone local to make things easier on my end. As my family had used the services of Klein’s firm in the past, I decided to seek the counsel of Klein, who asked for a retainer that was twice the amount quoted by the aforementioned lawyers- with travel fees factored in. Now I do not know exactly what it was that he took issue with in me. If I am simply being sensitive, or if it was the details of my case, my age, my race, or just that he did not like the fact that I asked him questions and took notes at our meetings, but he clearly made an effort to be unprofessional in our dealings. Perhaps Klein’s representation can be summarized in a defining phone conversation we had AFTER I had paid him a retainer. I had never personally hired a lawyer before, so I understandably had a few questions about the financial aspects of my case, as well as wanting to go over a few details of my case with my lawyer. After I asked Klein a couple questions about the difference between out-of-pocket expenses and court-fees, he snapped. “What is this, twenty questions?” he yelled into the phone. “You’re wasting my time!” This was funny, coming from a man for whose time I was paying hundreds of dollars for even in this phone conversation alone. He seemed just barely able to restrain himself from cursing at me as he tried to convince me to drop him as a lawyer after I tried to explain that the retainer I paid for was a fair amount for me, and that I just wanted to make sure I understood both the case, and wanted to go over details on expenses: “If you think X dollars is a lot of money, then just come here, and I’ll cut you a… stinking check for X dollars! Stop wasting my time!” This was followed by a few snide remarks (nothing unexpected) directed at me. “I thought you went to college,” he yelled. “You should be grateful for what I did for you,” he yelled, referring to the deal made with the DA, as if this was some pro-bono case where he did this simply out of the goodness of his heart. I mean, it was not like he was paid for his legal work or anything…Of course, the condescension didn’t stop there. After he was finished with his tirade, I calmly asked why he was angry. His response was that he wasn’t angry, but that I should “Come here and I’ll cut you a check for your lousy X dollars, and you can go represent yourself. If it’s so much money to you, good luck!” This was all because I asked him if a court stenographer (which he recommended for my case) would be covered by the retainer. “No,” was all the answer I got. Wanting to know a bit more, I just asked “Isn’t that considered a legal fee?” He replied briskly: “No,” again offering no elaboration. Not left with too many options due to his monosyllable answers, I asked “Why not”. He simply said “It’s an out of pocket expense.” So I asked him what the difference was, setting him off, because apparently college graduates shouldn’t ask questions, as they should be grateful for overpaid, grumpy lawyers. I tried to politely explain to him that I was only asking him these questions as I simply wanted to clarify details about the use of finances, to which he replied “If a stenographer is so expensive to you, then get a job or something. If it’s a financial problem, then it’s your problem, not mine!” In what situation is it ever okay to be that condescending to a client, and to make implicit insults directed at their intelligence, education, or financial situation? And one final point. If you are looking for a lawyer that can return your emails (which some find crucial in this day and age), forget it. Klein does not respond to emails. In fact, Klein does not even have an email, and refuses to use one. At least that was what he said in our dealings.

Peggy Miller should not be a court commissioner. She knows nothing about how abuse works and is not qualified to be deciding people's lives. I told her how I was beaten up, attacked, threatened, abused. Her and the man who had an expensive lawyer made fun and laughed at me. She turned 8 years worth of abuse into a joke, and let him abuse me more than I could take. I told her I could not take any more, but she couldn't care less about a woman's life. I said I would pay for lie detector tests for the both of us. She said they wouldn't be admissable as evidence. I said no, but when I pass and he fails it will be a good indicator of who is telling the truth! Now there will be consequences to letting him take my life away.

I was going through a custody battle for my daughter. Before she was born I already knew court was the only way we were going to settle this. I was researching and talking to many people about who is the best family court attourney in wisconsin and multiple people told me Peggy Miller. I made the phone call aand talked to attourney Miller then we sat down and talked. She told me from the beginning exactly the approach we would take ans everything we could make happen. I was very confident in what she told me when i left her office and already had my mind made up she was the attourney for us. Long story short everything Peggy told me would happen the first day i met with her and she made it happen almost just as easy. I got everything i wanted out of this case and i now have my daughter! My ex girlfriend went through 2 attourneys with this case and Peggy handled them with no issues what so ever. Im glad to have her on my side. Working against Peggy would have been a nightmare! As far as communication goes shes second to none. Anytime of day i could email her and she would get back to me almost immediatly. It didnt matter if it was 8 oclock on a wednesday morning or 9 oclock on a friday night the response was almost instant. Peggy is hands down worth every dollar spend and I feel very fortunate to have her on our side! If your going through a family or custody battle she is the attorney for you! You wont be let down!

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
