I attempted to retain Mr. Tepper's services, and after a brief conversation, he said he would call me back the same day after reviewing the file. He never called back...ever. I tried to call him numerous times thereafter, and he never returned my call. In my opinion, this shows an extreme lack of character and professionalism. With so many attorneys available, why would you choose someone who truly doesn't care.

Jerome Tepper represented me in a divorce case and a follow-up for child support reduction due to change in employment circumstances (non-W2 to W2). I found him reliable and very patient, considering I am not. Jerome handled my case professionally. Contrary to his own financial interests, he always encouraged me to "work things out" with my ex-spouse and seek an agreement to avoid unnecessary legal hassles and fees. While this proved difficult, it was definitely worth the effort pursued, and Jerome's encouragement of this approach says much for his personal character! I also found Jerome to be accurate and (yet sometimes) intentionally vague in his explanations of how family law is suppose to work. Jerome would rarely state with certainty how a judge would (or should) rule for my case. I'm not sure if Jerome was simply being cautious or if judge rulings are inherently unpredictable in family law cases. This uncertainty was unsettling to me during my divorce, yet Jerome maintained his professionalism by providing me with the accurate information he could and not speculating on outcomes he couldn't guarantee!

Al helped me get through a very difficult time in my life. Through my divorce he reassured me, took my children into consideration, and always had my best interest in mind. I had the opportunity to work with Al Hoff in an opposing roll for a Family Case. Mr. Hoff not only acted unethically throughout each hearing but he also does not follow up with writing orders and taking notes after the hearings. On many occasions Mr. Hoff would completely disregard Judge's orders and try and ram things through the system without consulting opposing counsel. Additionally, Mr. Hoff will unethically attack attorneys and their clients. My advice would be to save your money and go with someone who will not take you for everything you have and mislead you in court so that the process never ends. He has also been taken to court by a client and has had to reimburse them for services that he charged for but never rendered. If you want results do not hire him.

I read the one review and was worried because she was so super nice when we talked to her, but WOW was she tough in court! We knew she would tell it like it is to us and not waste our money but she totally fought like crazy in court but was so helpful the whole way. Answered all our questions and we never felt rushed, and we knew exactly what to expect once we were in trial. So happy we found her!

My only experience is with Chris. I hired him paid a retainer ($5k if I remember correctly) for a small business matter. It was over a customer trying to personally Sue me. I had zero personal involvement in his contract or pricing, and our contract was between the company and the customer, as well as having a very strong arbitration clause. Rather than fight them and make them abide by the contract, Chris almost strong armed me into settling. I paid the customer a portion (shame on me I guess) then Chris and the law firm sued me for addition “fees”. I personally think these people are fraidulant in there practices and violate their commitment to their clients. They charged me around $10-15k for a paper push. Go elsewhere!

I spoke with Lisa for 12min while on a break at work. Dad and I had same routine for 13yrs. Dad is prejudice and my fiancé is African American, I’m now considered a N lover and dad since hired an attorney. This is what dad does his entire life hires attorneys when he is mad or to get out of trouble, he has 3 DWI’s. My fiancé is a substitute teacher and supervisor at a very large company. Dad does not work has an unsafe home. No bathroom sink, showers don’t work, a junk yard, literally. Dad never enrolled any of our kids in school or sports. Never showed up at school or sporting events. Well after a 12min talk with Lisa she decided I sleep by my fiancé every night, he lives 18hrs away for the last 2yrs. I never missed a day of work in 2yrs so u tell me how that’s possible. Dad convinced our son he’d get the child support money. Well since I’ve seen my son dressed poorly, enrolled himself in school, was not at dads all summer long, out running around with friends. Been in trouble that normally he wouldn’t have. Called me several times to pick him up cause dad didn’t show up, has no friends sleep over, well he’s embarrassed of the “house”. Lisa herself said my son was influenced by dad. Well why let a drunk and a 13yr old convince her it’s ok for dad to have custody when I clearly had all evidence that dad never enrolled in school, sports, took shopping and drank a ton all day and night. I’m sitting watching my son suffer. I told everyone I did not have money to fight but figured I had all this evidence why it would not be good for our son. Physical proof. Thus is so so so sad. Heartbreaking. From a 12min conversation are u kidding me. Even if my fiancé was in this state i was home and never missed a beat with my kids. Not a beat. Horrible that it’s about money and letting a 13yr old convince you cause dad pressured him. Well my son I can promise is now regretting this just like I told the courts he would. Now what? I can’t hire an attorney??? My son now suffers. What a shame do not I repeat do not let Lisa represent your child. She put mine in an unsafe and horrible situation. Heartbroken!

I'm still trying to make sense of this attorney and my experience. He requires a $3000 non-refundable retainer and then does nothing. When I say we "worked" together for 5 months and he took no action I'm not exaggerating. His communication is arrogant and spotty to say the least as he refuses to answer his clients questions. When I received no response to my emails he blamed his server, his secretary, and others collaborating with him. He can't remember basic instructions and took NO action except spending my money. When I asked about what I was being charged for he would not respond. My experience with Daniel Murray left me feeling he is somehow impaired and the key to his ability to continue to support his practice lies in his non-refundable retainer policy. I would not recommend hiring and please do your homework reading what is available on the internet regarding his performance. This was an unpleasant experience and waste of time and money.

We hired Imhoff & Associates that contracts with Mr Kerner in SE Wisconsin. The retainer we had to pay is 3 times higher than other attorney's we interviewed. We had very little contact as he barely returned emails or phone calls. Under his care the charges against me mounted up as he didn't speak with DA, as our new attorney has. Where other attorney contracts stipulate that $ will be refunded for hours not used, there is a vague clause in his contracts that says they will not refund any $ we paid. If you need action, you should find another attorney.

If you mess up, you are going to be punished- accept that fact. Kerner didn't comfort me or give me that warm, fuzzy feeling- & I understand that lawyers are busy & don't return every call. But when I really needed him to perform, he did,,, and then some. He told me what I needed to do, and he did what he needed to do. Without his expertise, I would have been locked up for a long time. He was able to reach a compromise where both sides were happy. When someone is speaking to a judge on your behalf, you better have a good lawyer. Kerner was very professional & knowledgeable, and his years of experience show when it counts.

Hiring Mr. D'Angelo was a mistake and a waste of my time and money. I could never get a hold of him and he did not keep me informed at all. Two friends of mine had received the same exact charges as mine and had went to court without hiring a lawyer and received a better deal than me. Although this might not be Mr. D'Angelo's fault, he went ahead and met with the district attorney again charging me a very large sum for it claiming that his paralegal had said I requested it. There was too much miscommunication between him and his paralegal since he does not care to deal with his clients directly. He kept adding to the bill and finding ridiculous things to charge me for without ever getting the ok from me. He takes advantage of his clients and tries to squeeze as much money out of them as possible. Dealing with him has been one long headache, and I would never recommend him to anyone.

Priya Barnes took on a very complicated case that involved a significant amount of "unchartered territory" legally. Out of state law was involved, and this attorney was incredibly resourceful for us. Finding the attorneys we would eventually need on the outside of WI but first getting answers through her own research. She prepared us for court proceedings here and out of state. There were times it seemed we shouldn't even "be in the game" but Priya found the ways-the laws that protected our family and kept us in step with our ultimate goals for our proceedings. We had a very different kind of family case, other attorneys found it difficult to find footing, onlookers and even judges had never experienced a situation quite like it. As challenging as it presented, Priya Barnes did a great job representing us and getting us where we needed to be.

Me and my siblings hired Chris for a Probate case after our parents passed. I have a minor complaint that I felt rushed. He hired a real estate agent to sell the house, which seemed to be a good friend of his. That is ok, but I did not feel like the real estate agent was on our side, which reflected badly on Chris. That situation could have been avoided if we got our own real estate agent, but we put full trust into Chris. I gave Chris 5 stars because his patience was extraordinary. I know we tested his patience and I commend him for hanging in there for us. At times I felt like he went above and beyond for us.He was very professional, very organized, and very personable. I would absolutely not recommend this lawyer to represent you! When we were figuring out child support from my ex to me she let the other lawyer tell her what the dollar amount was going to be and it wasn't the right amount for the percentage that your spouse is required to pay for two kids. The whole time in court I was telling her that was wrong and she didn't say anything until we left the court room and then said that we could come back to that. While they were doing the calculations they never took into consideration ALL of my ex's income and my lawyer never stuck up for me telling my ex's lawyer that it wasn't right and that we didn't use ALL of his income, she let my ex and his lawyer walk all over me! At the end she never even looked at his assets to have them split with me so I got nothing, signed off on the house and I got nothing! I have never been through this before so I needed the help of an expert and she was by far NOT an expert! On top of the fact that it costed me $2,000 retainer fee and then when everything was said and done another $800.00 so all together $2800 and I ended with not a fair amount in child support and nothing else!! My divorce was finalized on Jan 5, 2015 and I didn't know that the "divorce decree" that I got sent to me from Teresa's office wasn't my finalized divorce decree until now, when I reached out to my lawyer to see if she could give me a copy, she didn't even one! She had to send an email to my ex's lawyer to send her a copy of it! Terrible, terrible! I would have expected that my lawyer would have been on top of getting all of this stuff for me considering I have no idea what I'm looking for and she did! Now, I am waiting on this divorce decree so I can provide it to my bank so I can get approved for a mortgage to better myself and my kids and I have to wait until it is convenient for my ex's lawyer to send it! Very Very Very Very disappointed

Which is ironic since i had a letter from her dated before these emails saying that she had my taxes. If she says anything different I can send proof. So if you want an attorney that is going to lie about you to other people in the court system then hire her. There is no free consultation. I hired her for a child custody case. My ex lied about her income she did nothing, my ex lied about where she lived at so that I had to drive a mile past where my daughter lived for the exchange. she did nothing. I am self employed and I was not allowed tax deductions she did nothing. I getting a temporary placement of 50/50 and I had to pay her over 30% of my income. I gave her the proof she said she didn't believe it was legal I had consulted two different attorneys and multiple online articles. The online article should have been plenty good because when I asked her question about a law she told me to google it. I told her about what I was told and found on the internet she promptly withdrew from the case. If you want someone to represent you based on her beliefs then hire her if you want to be represented on actual laws hire someone else. Or just google it and save a lot of money. She charged me over $2000 for one court appearance and a very little amount of paperwork. She is equal to flushing money down the toilet stay away. She is a one star lawyer because the website makes you give her a star. I personally wouldn't give her negative stars.

This lawyer is lazy and is part of the good old boys club! I hired this lawyer to handle a child custody and divorce case simultaneously. He often lost information that was given to him several times and came to court unprepared. He also mentioned details from other individuals cases which I thought was highly unethical, especially since they were people that I was familiar with. I wasted thousands of dollars on this attorney only to end up terminating him and going with another lawyer to get results. If you are looking for a stand up attorney who cares about his cases, look elsewhere. Don't waste your time!

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
