In September 2023, my brother (25, from Arizona) got arrested (in San Francisco, California) after attempting to enter a conference within a community both of us grew up in and have been apart of since 2008. His car keys were knocked out of his suit pants during a tackle incident at the security clearance after he had trouble leaving when asked. According to my brother there was a misunderstanding of an email conflicting with him not being invited to the conference. After being tackled and handcuffed, he told the officers he had a concealed firearm in his vehicle, 5 minutes away, as he felt it was a danger for his keys to be off of his person. I was at this conference, and saw some of this happen live. My peers in our place of work were laughing, and making memes about this for months. There are many videos and pictures of the whole ordeal. They put 6 charges on him that night, including "possession of armor piercing ammunition" and "high capacity magazines" The SF media created a narrative off of the charges and the prosecution ran with it moving to deny bail within the first week, just as my family was even beginning to cope with this new reality. Public consensus of the incident caused a rift in the community between those who knew him for years prior and know he would never do what was being inferred by the media, and those who didn't know him and were led to believe it. Our family used this as fuel to ensure we stuck with this case mentally and financially, no matter how hard it felt and how much of an uphill battle it was at times. We went through two public defenders, and another private attorney before landing on Nechay Law in late March 2024. Nechay tried many angles of defense for this non violent gun storage charge. All previous charges except "having a concealed firearm in a vehicle" were wiped, and the remaining was moved to a misdemeanor which a change of plea got him out of jail after 1 year, 4 days. The prosecution was going for conviction on the felony level to get him 6 years, based upon the narrative they shaped up. Nechay (even after 7 months of other attorneys handling the case) was able to reverse and put to rest the previously life ruining, retribution hungry narrative. The best scenario out of all of this is he will be getting more familial attention and help to deal with previous traumas such as a car crash that totaled his very expensive car, two home break-ins, and his business faltering. Rebuilding for him will be a hard but rewarding journey, and Nechay has allowed that second chance of the sanctity of life to happen through her expertise. I cannot recommend enough. Our family is eternally grateful for Valery and her firm's service.

I can't recommend Valery Nechay enough as an attorney. Her knowledge in so many areas of the law is truly impressive. She went above and beyond to make sure every detail was covered, and I always felt supported and informed throughout the whole legal process. Even with her busy schedule, Valery always found time to answer my questions, no matter how small. She made me feel like I was in the hands of someone who genuinely cares and knows her stuff. Valery is not just knowledgeable and dedicated, but also incredibly compassionate. I'm so grateful for everything she did for me.

David provided phenomenal services throughout my custody proceedings. David was available, present, and responsive with every interaction. He kept me grounded and outlined possible outcomes to manage my expectations. David provided a plan and a path for navigating the court system, gathering valuable information, and preparation for hearings. He was cost-conscious during the entire process, understood and explained the legal process, and was sympathetic to the highly sensitive family issues we were experiencing. I highly recommend David and would certainly retain his services for any future needs!

Throughout my career in real estate and construction I have worked with numerous attorneys in business and with one other divorce attorney. As the executive that managed the lawsuits for my employers I have been in court for lawsuits and claims, and continuously worked with attorneys on contractual and personnel matters. I can say without reservation that David is one of the best lawyers with whom I have ever worked. So what makes David such a great attorney? First, most attorneys will tell you “what the Judge is going to say” (as if they are the judge). I learned early in my business career that attorneys have NO IDEA what the judge is going to say. David, while providing an opinion, did not pretend to know what the judge (or my ex-wife) was going to say and professionally presented my approach with the attitude of “try and let us see what happens,” which for me, had a good outcome. Secondly, David was able to polish and present my thoughts and writings into a understandable and professional document (with less emotion). This was very instrumental in obtaining a good outcome. My previous divorce attorney was incapable of doing this. Lastly, but not least, David is very efficient and considerate of billing and as a result his fees were reasonable for the service, which is always appreciated. Before engaging David, I talked with quite a few attorneys in the Bay Area and I am happy with my decision, grateful to David for his help, and he is the ONLY divorce attorney I would recommend in the Bay Area.

David is beyond amazing!! David's calm demeanor, prompt, straight-forward – no nonsense approach, intelligent, honest, and /experienced family law attorney does a wonderful job balancing delicate family needs and legal necessities. My complex case stalled for 1.5 years until I found David. He managed to resurrect my case and coached us through a settlement, avoiding Court with positive results in the best interest of my family; an impressive settlement that I didn't see coming. Divorce is a challenging time and David is poise and always prompt to navigate the changing tides seamlessly. When I received my final judgement, he reminded me to update my beneficiaries and ensure all loose ends were buttoned up. I have the utmost trust and confidence in David, and HIGHLY recommend David.

The first things I must say about Lindsay is that he is generous of heart and wise. He offered me direct and strong guidance, was open to listening to my concerns, but most importantly, expertly explained the legal ins and outs (and potential costs) of the situation should I take it further. Let me be more specific: I had a book agent who lied and misrepresented submissions to editors, hid pertinent information, then tried to damage my reputation when I caught her in falsehoods. Lindsay helped me understand the pieces of the situation which are actionable, and which ones I need to leave behind me. His advice is clear, well-thought-out, and founded upon a practical approach to the law. He absolutely helped me clarify what I can do versus what direction I really want to take. I recommend him highly and without reservation.

When a major client owed me several months worth of invoices and refused to pay, a friend referred me to Kyle. I was arrested for DUI in Alameda County. Marc was recommended to me by a family member. I did not know whether to hire him before the District Attorney would make a charging decision. Marc advised me to hire someone good to represent me asap because he said that based upon his former experience as a prosecutor, it was much better if I had a good lawyer plead my case before a charging decision was made. And also for the DMV hearing process. The DA decided to not file a DUI case against me!

Our eviction case pushed Curt & his co-counsel team to their limits in every way, & they pulled through w/ flying colors. Our case, while practically over in our favor, instead of being a normally 1 month long UD, still lingers on after ~8 months not because of Curt, but because our opponent was ruled to be one of the most mean/obstructive Landlord attorneys out there, w/ over 20 years experience, & have an endless dirty playbook they launch against tenants which puts them at the top of the list of infamous, notorious Landlord attorneys- they are also a high volume Landlord side firm w/ HUGE resources & they do everything possible to bury & overwhelm their opponent, to run up costs & force missed response deadlines. For the first 4 mo, just to keep up w/ them, Curt had to dedicate his complete resources to our case (virtually shutting down his legal practice). Curt was able to get each of their mean legal tactic stricken down, & then, icing on the cake, got the judge to slap them w/ one of the largest (if not the largest) sanctions (penalties, like contempt of court) ever for their mean/obstructive behavior. Judges almost never give much sanctions, so Curt (& team) winning us that monster one was no small feat. I was present at many of his most important court motion hearings in our case, and closely read through the endless court hearing and deposition transcripts, digesting his responses, counter arguments, & lines of questioning. I could go on endlessly about all the twists & turns that he had to overcome, but suffice it to say that given our case has pushed all the boundaries of UD law/process, he has demonstrated himself to me to be an extremely competent, legally knowledgeable, adept, tenacious, & caring lawyer (& person). He has great instincts w/ the SF civil Judges, depositions, and real-time litigation strategy. W/ Judges, he’s actually very respectful, takes allot of abuse, rides the line to stay on their good side and builds a solid history and rapport. In depos, he’s got amazing instincts. His instincts to discover criminal/foul play in physical evidence were also very impressive. I was also amazed at how he can dig into and own all the endless facts of our extremely complex case. Most all other attorneys would just gloss it over, and ignore/miss key (even hidden) evidence. He also great on client communications stuff, and is very open to client input & guidance when helpful, yet is always polite and frank when it is not. He is extremely respectful, and has almost zero ego/elitist trips of most lawyers. No games or angles… he’s a strait shooter! He knows his court procedure pretty well, and is a tenacious fighter. When it comes to fighting the most notorious landlord firms, he only takes clients that are willing (and able) to go all the way to jury trial, and we wanted a firm that had effectively scrapped w/ them before, and could handle jury trial. I had interviewed literally dozens of top notch attorneys (most billing $300 - $450/hr, and many were obvious rip offs, looking to take as much $ as possible, and don’t care about results), and even the most experienced in SF UD cases (e.g., 15-20+ yrs exp) had only gone to jury trial once, and the rest had no jury trial experience, just doing some bench trials, which is no good for the bogus nuisance UD case maliciously slapped on us. He has close co-counsel associates who fill in gaps where his is practice not as strong. In our case, he teamed up w/ Marc Branco to shore up UD law practice. So, that combined w/ his jury trial experience (and their hunger to kick their butt), is what sold me on their ‘dynamic duo’ to go up against them. His criminal law experience was very pertinent to our very (fact driven) nuisance UD case, and he’s adept at picking apart (hostile) witnesses an triangulating to converge on favorable facts to the case. So, in sum, I can vouch that Curt (& team) are very competent re UD legal practice, highly ethical, they get results.

I was recently in a difficult--and frankly, scary--dispute with my landlord, and initially felt completely intimidated and overwhelmed by the situation. I talked to a number of attorneys, including several of the more well-known tenant's rights firms in the Bay Area, many of whom gave me the run-around, or agreed to handle some aspects of the case but not others. I'm very grateful that I finally connected with Jason. He took on the entirety of the case, and developed an overall strategy to navigate the complexities of the situation. He handled the case with great skill and competence, and brought it to a very positive conclusion. He's a clear, strategic thinker, fair-minded, and not intimidated by the bullying tactics one encounters in these situations. And he really is just a good guy, and treats his clients very fairly and honorably. If you find yourself in this kind of situation, look him up!

Michael has represented our Irrigation District since the late 1980's. His representation has been superb. He has helped us navigate, quite literally, through much "troubled water" -such as the breach of the Truckee Canal at Fernley, Nevada in 2008. He possesses a rare command of the law in California and elsewhere. His areas of practice, exercised on our behalf, have included administrative law, environmental law, property law, and water law. He works hard and keeps his client informed. His is a great courtroom presence accompanied by unfailing respect for the judiciary and the practice of law. He is admired and respected by his peers.

In 2010, I experienced unbearable (and unlawful) workplace harassment and filed a Workers Comp claim which my employer promptly denied. I sought help from attorney Kenneth Sheppard to who I will be grateful for as long as I live. He was a terrific advocate and an absolute pleasure to work with. From my very first contact in 2010 through my most recent one today, Kenneth was and consistently remained kind, patient, effective, and efficient. He was either readily available to speak with me when I needed it or promptly returned my phone calls and emails. Kenneth did everything needed to get me excellent results. He is not only knowledgeable, skilled, level-headed, and realistic; he is also calm, reassuring, gracious, and generous. For example, after my Award was finalized, my employer took an unreasonable time paying my medical bills. Though Kenneth would not be specifically compensated for it, he filed a Motion with the WCAB and I eventually got paid. With Kenneth help, I was able to return to work with my dignity intact. Because I have some background in Workers Comp claims and understand the demands, I know Kenneth’s level of performance to be exceptional. Also, as a trained attorney who has met a few in my days, I can say without a doubt that Kenneth Sheppard is the finest among us.

Tamara was referred to me by a friend who was a partner at a huge national firm -- I was starting a new venture and needed some help with an acquisition deal, and, as a start-up/small business, I couldn't afford the services of my friend at big-ticket-law. He immediately thought of Tamara -- he'd worked on the other side of a matter with her and had been impressed with her skills, knowledge and business model (as an independent) and how well that worked for small cos, startups, etc. Tamara helped me prepare the acquisition contract, helping me understand the pros/cons of different approaches and the risks associated with specific language the other party wanted to use. She allowed me to do much of the drafting myself -- providing guardrails but also allowing me to save my scarce startup funds. Her advice proved invaluable later, when it was revealed that the seller presented false information in their disclosures, and I was able to avoid paying a big chunk of the acquisition cost. I have referred Tamara when I've had the opportunity and would happily work with her again if I had a similar legal need. Note, Tamara also does a lot of work in Europe -- apparently she's spending much of her time there now -- and I haven't had the opportunity to take advantage of her international expertise. But, I can only assume she approaches that aspect of her business with the diligence and professionalism she brought to my (relatively small) matter. Also worth noting that Tamara is super-friendly and down-to-earth, and you never once get the feeling she might over-charge you (the opposite, in fact). My only minor complaint is that she was so in-demand, it was sometimes slightly hard to reach her (although never when it really counted).

When you work with Audrey you will be working with the best. I have found Audrey to be more knowledgeable than attorneys who have practiced law their entire lives. Sometimes she can be curt/blunt - don’t be put off by that. She’s just trying to tell you what’s going. If you need a softer approach let her know and she will adjust. One day in my mail I found a letter from my landlords attorney telling me my landlord had filed a petition with the San Francisco Rent Board to raise our rent. My roommate and I immediately went to the Tenants Union for counseling. We met Jason Wolford who told us we had a good case, but should hire an attorney to represent us at the hearing. Jason provided us with a fairly long lists of attorney. We reviewed the list and determined that Wolford Wayne was the best fit for our situation. Megan Johnson, an associate at Wolford Wayne, was the person Jason recommended. Megan represented tenants in buyout negotiations, affirmative wrongful eviction cases and Rent Board cases. We met with Megan in person and we were impressed with her knowledge of our case. Megan felt our landlord’s case was weak and once they saw the rebuttal she would submit to the Rent Board they may withdraw the Petition to raise our rent. She clearly explained to us what information we needed to provide her to do her best in defending us at the Rent Board hearing. For various reasons that we do not understand and were out of our control the Rent Board took 6 months to schedule our hearing. During this time Megan was in touch with both us and the rent board working to facilitate a speedy hearing and to discuss with us the various documents the landlord provided as evidence why our rent should be raised. In the end, the landlord withdrew their petition to raise our rent 3 days before the scheduled Rent Board hearing. This was frustrating, but all is well that ends well. Thanks to Megan Johnson we are now prepared to document our comings and goings and other information the landlord would twist to try and prove that we no longer lived in our apartment. All around we could not ask for a more knowledgeable, goal oriented attorney who communicated with us in a timely manner in a way we could always understand. Megan was perfect! There is nothing I would ask her to do differently and without hesitation I would recommend her to anyone having the unfortunate experience of having to deal with the San Francisco Rent Board.

What a Government Lawyer Can Do for You

A government lawyer specializes in legal issues related to government policies, regulations, and disputes involving public entities. Whether you are a private individual, business, or government agency, a government lawyer provides expert guidance on navigating the complexities of government law. These attorneys handle cases ranging from constitutional law, administrative law, regulatory compliance, and government contracts to defending or challenging government actions.

Government lawyers help individuals and organizations understand their rights and obligations under the law, represent them in disputes with government agencies, and assist in matters of government contracting, procurement, or public policy.

When Should I Hire a Government Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a government lawyer in several situations involving government regulations, compliance, or disputes. Common reasons to hire a government lawyer include:

  • Government contracts and procurement: If you are bidding for or negotiating a contract with a government agency, a lawyer can help ensure compliance with federal, state, or local contracting rules.
  • Regulatory compliance: Businesses operating in highly regulated industries (e.g., healthcare, finance, environmental sectors) often need legal guidance to comply with government regulations and avoid penalties.
  • Government investigations: If you're being investigated by a government agency such as the IRS, SEC, or EPA, a government lawyer can help defend you against allegations or negotiate settlements.
  • Challenging government actions: If a government agency has denied a permit, license, or benefit, a lawyer can help you appeal or challenge the decision in court.
  • Constitutional and civil rights issues: If you believe your constitutional rights have been violated by a government entity, such as in cases involving free speech or discrimination, a government lawyer can help you seek justice.
  • Public policy or lobbying efforts: If you are involved in lobbying or advocating for policy changes at the local, state, or federal level, a government lawyer can provide legal advice on compliance with lobbying laws and strategies for effective advocacy.

Hiring a government lawyer early in the process can help you navigate complex legal frameworks and avoid costly mistakes when dealing with government-related legal issues.

What Does a Government Lawyer Do?

A government lawyer provides a wide range of services that cover interactions between individuals, businesses, and government entities. They can:

  • Assist with government contracts: Helping clients navigate procurement laws, drafting contracts, and resolving disputes related to government contracting.
  • Provide regulatory compliance advice: Offering guidance on meeting regulatory requirements for industries subject to federal, state, or local laws.
  • Handle administrative law matters: Representing clients before government agencies, such as appealing administrative decisions, applying for permits, or defending against regulatory enforcement actions.
  • Challenge or defend government actions: Representing clients in lawsuits involving government agencies, including constitutional challenges, civil rights violations, or disputes over government decisions.
  • Negotiate settlements with government entities: If a government agency is pursuing legal action against you or your business, a lawyer can negotiate settlements to avoid costly litigation.
  • Advocate for policy changes: Advising clients on legal strategies for influencing public policy, including lobbying and drafting legislation.
  • Litigate constitutional issues: Handling cases related to the Constitution, such as First Amendment rights, due process violations, or unlawful government actions.

How Are Government Lawyers Paid?

Government lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the nature of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: For ongoing legal matters, such as regulatory compliance or government contract disputes, lawyers may charge by the hour. Hourly rates can vary depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific services, such as drafting a government contract or filing an administrative appeal, some lawyers charge a flat fee.
  • Retainer: For clients who need ongoing legal support, such as businesses frequently interacting with government agencies, a lawyer may charge a retainer fee. This is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.
  • Contingency fee: In some cases involving litigation, such as civil rights violations, a lawyer may work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win or settle the case.

It’s important to discuss fee structures with your lawyer during the initial consultation to avoid surprises.

How Much Does a Government Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a government lawyer depends on the complexity of the legal issue, the lawyer's experience, and their fee structure. Here are some general cost estimates:

  • Hourly rates: Government lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For specific legal services, such as drafting a government contract, flat fees can range from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on the nature of the service.
  • Retainer fees: A retainer for ongoing legal work with government agencies can range from $5,000 to $20,000 or more, depending on the scope and frequency of the work.
  • Contingency fees: In cases where a lawyer works on contingency, their fee is usually a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or damages awarded if the case is successful.

Be sure to get a clear estimate of costs during your consultation to ensure that you understand the fees associated with your case.

Top Questions to Ask a Government Lawyer

When hiring a government lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and skills needed for your specific situation. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What is your experience with government law cases?
Make sure the lawyer has substantial experience in handling cases or issues involving government agencies, regulatory compliance, or constitutional law.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services - whether by the hour, flat fee, retainer, or contingency fee - and request an estimate of costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your legal options and the likelihood of success based on your specific situation.
  4. How do you handle interactions with government agencies?
Ask about their approach to dealing with government entities and their experience with specific agencies relevant to your case (e.g., IRS, EPA, SEC).
  5. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Ask about their experience with similar cases and whether they have achieved favorable outcomes in the past.
  6. Who will handle my case?
Clarify whether the lawyer you are meeting with will personally handle your case or whether junior attorneys or paralegals will do most of the work.

How to Check the Credibility of a Government Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a reputable government lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Review their professional experience: Look for specific experience in government-related legal issues, such as regulatory compliance, government contracts, or administrative law, on their website or professional profile.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Check online reviews and ratings on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s reputation and track record.
  • Ask for references: Request references from previous clients who have worked with the lawyer on government-related matters to understand their experience and effectiveness.
  • Check for membership in relevant organizations: Look for memberships in professional organizations such as the American Bar Association's Administrative Law Section or the National Institute of Government Procurement, which can indicate the lawyer’s focus on government law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with a government lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant information and documents. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Detailed description of your legal issue: Be prepared to explain your situation, whether it’s a regulatory compliance question, a government contract issue, or a dispute with a government agency.
  • Relevant documents: Bring any paperwork related to your case, such as contracts, permits, letters from government agencies, or notices of investigation.
  • A list of questions: Write down any questions you have about your case, including the legal process, potential outcomes, and costs.
  • Timeline of events: Provide a clear timeline of any relevant events, such as the issuance of government orders or interactions with government agencies.
  • Goals for the outcome: Be ready to discuss what you hope to achieve, whether it’s a favorable settlement, regulatory compliance, or overturning a government decision.

By being organized and prepared, you can help your lawyer understand your situation more quickly and give you the best legal advice moving forward.
