My husband and I were her clients on E2 (investor) visas. Every two years our status needed to be renewed. Once (either she or the Department of Homeland Security) made a simple spelling mistake on my name. Debra could not (or would not) take care of it for almost a year. I needed to go abroad but could not because of this unfixed mistake. Later, she prepared all the documentation necessary for my husband to go to his native country and apply for a visa from there. He got denied, even though he had just renewed his status for two more years just a few months prior. I was still in the US, alone with a baby. When I contacted her to let her know what had happened and ask for her directions, she told me she would soon get back to us on how to proceed. But she did not. I called her mobile and her office more than 20 times, left many messages, to no avail. I just wanted information on how long I could legally stay in the country, considering my status had been tied to that of my husband's. But she did not return my calls. I was left in the dark, living in constant fear that the police would knock my door, and God forbid, take my baby, during the few weeks I needed to sell our property and leave the country as well. My husband had been her client for about 8 years and I had been her client for more than 5; we had always paid her legal fees on time. But when something terrible happened, instead of offering the assistance she was legally obligated to as our attorney, she simply disappeared.

Deborah represented my case as an immigration attorney and I found her to be extremely professional, trustworthy and someone I could rely and count on. She lead us through the entire process with proper documentation and research. Deborah's rates were very reasonable and she not only understands and empathizes with her client's situation, she agressively fights for their rights. I have recommended Deborah to many friends and they are all very pleased with her exceptional service and great attitude.

This lady is the worst communicator. You have to squeeze every ounce of information from her. Even your court date! She can’t let you know unless you ask her. She is stubborn and very rude. Customer service is not a term she is familiar with. I hired her for a devorce case and was thoroughly disappointed in her. She wouldn’t do anything until I pushed her. She would not pass any information along. Not even the court date. When I asked her she said “ I don’t know what you would do with that info”. That was after waiting for a whole month for updates on the case. She misspelled names on my case but still refused to take responsility. She removes you from the picture like you don’t matter in your own case. Please look elsewhere for representation. Don’t waste your $$. I was so tempted to fire her so many times but because of the scarcity of resources I put up with her. Thankfully she completed the case albeit the pathetic, menial outcomes. I sometimes thinks I would do a better job representing myself.

Hired her to represent me in my Divorce. The communication with her was not great at all. She received an temporary court order and did not notify me to attend court nor did she provide me a copy of the signed temporary order. Which resulted in a motion for contempt. She came to court on the motion totally not prepared which resulted in my ex not being held accountable for his contempt charge. I however received the shorter end of the stick due to the lack or representation. She then decided to remove herself from my Divorce case 16 days before trial. The paralegal are oblivious to what is going on as well Total waiste of money.

Mr. Sherman is a ghost I hired him for a car accident case and I have yet to meet him. My case has been going for 7 months not once has he contacted me to let me know what is going on. I constantly call the law office and get the same person i guess his assistant Apollo who is as helpful as a wet dishrag. He never knows where Mr. Sherman is and they never check their voicemail as the mailbox is always full. My case is finally settled and I have to now share money with them and their bootleg chiropractor for services that were not beneficial to me. They are only looking out to assist themselves. If I would have known better. I would have just talked to the person's insurance company on my own. This was a waste of my time and they still have not given me my settlement amount although the insurance company has sent them a check. I will NEVER WORK WITH THIS MAN AGAIN!!!! BEWARE!!!!

I have hired Luis and Rob Campos as a recommendation from a bondsman over the phone (I know that probably wasn't a good idea but I was desperate). I thought luis was going to be our main lawyer but apparently he is only an assistant. I've met Luis less than 10X but I never heard from or even seen how Rob looks like. Their presentation was pretty good and I was convinced they were actually good lawyers. I dropped $6,300 to bail an inmate just for him to get a warrant out for his arrest not even 24 hours after he got released. Which makes no sense b/c why would I be able to bail him out if they were going to get a warrant out for his arrest just a few hours later??? Anyways. He charged us $12,000 to handle our case, I paid $6000 up front and financing the rest each month. I hired them back in APRIL '17 and have done absolutely nothing in this. They haven't even filed a notice of motion on the case. They don't answer their phones when you try to contact them and rarely replies to text. Little nervous I'm getting scammed but we'll see how this goes.

Gennaro was a pleasant lawyer but slow to notify me of developments in my divorce case. My ex dragged the divorce out over 2 years. He allowed the opposing counsel to flagrantly ignore agreed upon elements of written and signed agreements, even court ordered items. He wouldn’t insist on my rights or inform them that he would take action if they didn’t come into compliance. His rates were fair and flexible. I never felt like he was padding his billing hours because we agreed on an overall maximum potential cost. He delivered UNDER the price agreed upon. Ultimately, I would rather have paid more for aggressive representation.

You would think that coming off a 2 year probation case for professional misconduct, that Mr. Southerlands 'T's would be crossed and 'I's dotted. For the past 6 months +, Mr. Southerland on 11 separate occassions, has himself given self imposed deadlines to file a claim on my behalf. Every time without exception, nothing has been done. I relied upon his promises to map my next employment moves. Excuses abound. Lies are prevalent, BUT, you will find him on Twitter and LinkedIn nightly. I take this review seriously and it breaks my heart to even leave this review. Alf has literally caused enormous mental anguish & expense by his lacksidasical and unethical false claims of relief. Alf was hired for as employment attorney to review a separation agreement and negotiate with former Company. He was very prompt in the beginning and very personable. We felt confident in his ability to get the job done, but after payment was sent to Alf things changed. We went an entire month without hearing from him and deadlines were missed. Since this was right in the middle of COVID we thought maybe he was sick with COVID? Please note, as far as we could tell, there is no one assisting him. The answering service provided no insight or help, and after getting the same lady over and over again, we got the sense that she was used to taking lots of phone calls like ours. All she could/would say is to send Alf an email. Once we finally got in touch with Alf, he said he was having back problems, apologized and we thought we were finally on track. Then, he goes silent again. No responses. Voicemail is full. We're months into this saga with no resolve and still have the pending issue with the employer. We feel obligated to make sure this doesn't happen to others who need help, so we wanted to share our experience.

Finally I went down the list of attorneys that were closer to where he was and I called this law firm. I do a free consultation and they told me that he could get out and we'll just listening to them I said forget it and I hired them without taking in the fact of what everyone else said and 1 month later at my husbend court date. Boom he was out. I am sooo thankful I found this firm. Thank you Mr. Ray and Mrs. Patricia..

Did my paperwork incorrectly and attempted to charge me for the correction. He filed with the court an order appointing my son as his own father and changing his name to the wrong name. Then when I asked him to change it quoted me $2k. His secretary yelled at me for questioning that charge. Is that ethical or legal? Get it right with a better lawyer who can read and spell.

Unethical. He made an error on a court order. It states that my son is his own father. When I asked to help change it and even offered to pay the court filing, he requires his retainer. $2500. I wonder if this is a business. Make an error and funnel more money from people? Good idea in theory but save your money and find someone to do it correctly the first time.

This is not a trial lawyer. She will make you feel defeated about your case and is incredibly verbally abusive. I wish I would’ve recorded some of the things she said to me while she was my public defender. She offers no solutions and suggestions. She will laugh at you and treat you like you aren’t a person. She gets defensive when you ask questions and speaks on your case definitely as if she is the judge and has the final call. Do not by any means accept this “lawyer” as your public defender.

Riddihi Desai is a terrible public defender with a black heart. She’s been on my Son case for months & all she do is complain like she’s the client. Nasty responses, she’s uncooperative, rude & very discouraging. She’s like a murderer in the spirit out to kill the faith of inmates hope. Every time she speak to my Son she’s negative & won’t provide complete answers to questions. Fight against him instead of for him & put together no strategy to win yet aim to destroy his freedom. It’s wrong & must stop if I got to report her publicly on the news to warn others. Inmates are still human beings & it’s not her place to treat them like dogs, especially getting paid from the State. I tried speaking with her due to him being a young adult in hopes we could communicate on a different level. She’s hung up in my face 2-3 times when I’ve told her how wrong this is. She makes no adjustments to change nor balance for the sake of Peace & the best interest of the client. I heard clients tell The Judge she’s not right & he made excuses for her unrighteous behavior. Out of order to sit on a bench & defend what they wouldn’t if it was their kids. Bottom line is shes a bitter hateful lawyer.

Ms. Desai is nearly impossible to get in touch with and did not return ANY calls for 6 months (August-February) until the day I threatened to contact someone about the non contact. The lawyer is not receptive to client input and frequently looks disheveled with torn clothing and unorganized files. She kept files related to my case for months until I threatened to report her. Her charges to the state/county for time spent working on my case seemed made up because she was not reachable and didnt review details because she seemed too overburdened to mount effective defense. She was a court appointed lawyer (in my opinion acted/functioned like an agent of the state) but I don't suggest hiring her for ANY case.

There were no assets to fight for and no children involved, but she couldn’t get my divorce even after 17 months, she did nothing. later I found out that she was not submitting any petitions, but whenever I asked her update about my divorce, she used to reply back after 3-4 weeks and say, she submitted this and that petition and she needs more money. I hired a new lawyer and they checked in the court system and told me, my divorce case itself is not filed yet. she fools innocent people. It sure would be nice if I could be leaving a five-star rating here today. Unfortunately, not in my case. Instead, one star is one too many. I want to start by saying that I have nothing against Lane personally. He's probably a great person. For some people he may have represented them properly and kept them informed with the right amount of professionalism and due diligence we all expect to get from our attorney. He might have put forth the right amount of push forwardness that you needed him to give. He may have kept on top of things. He may have put in the due diligence to bring forth a fair outcome for them. They may be satisfied with his quality of performance. However, he didn't give me that level of professionalism. After 1 1/2 I had no choice but to accept the facts and seek counsel elsewhere. I hired Lane Heginbotham to represent me with my divorce. And of course, when he gave the consultation It all sounded great. If only I had known what a mistake, I was getting myself into. My divorce went nowhere. I was left feeling alone, misinformed, deceived and improperly represented. I trusted that I would be given a fair and equal representation by Lane. I was very wrong, and my time and money was wasted. As we all know those are rather important in everyone's lives. It became clear that my case wasn't important enough to him. Why file motions against the opposing side and then not follow through with them. Why were the temporary orders never followed through with? My "someday" ex-husband was allowed to disobey the standing order multiple times, make up his own rules, his counsel was allowed to be as leisure as they wanted with every request asked from them and nothing was done about it. I can't help but think that if I had behaved like such, I could rest assure the opposing counsel would have done something about it. That is most certain. Why make excuses for the opposing side and allow them to stall and drag out a divorce that should have been done and over with even with COVID, within a year or even much less. It's not like were Hollywood stars here. Lane would say he's working on this and that and I would wait and wait and wait... Just to find out that no progress had been made. "We're waiting to hear back from the opposing counsel" became an in every conversation sort of thing. I felt like asking if he was representing me or my husband. Then finally after hearing every excuse one can be told by their attorney as to why nothing was happening, it became obvious that my case didn't really matter. I was as transparent as I could be with Lane. I wanted to move forward with my divorce so I could move on with my life. I expected to be treated with dignity and respect. He didn't need to lead me along by telling me that the opposing counsel had dropped the ball when the truth be known he (Lane) dropped the ball! I trusted Lane to give my case as much effort and attention as he would any other case. Yet again the joke was on me just like in my marriage. Ha, Ha. This was not good attorney ethical standards by a long shot. I guess if you don't really understand or care about what your client is going through, how their whole life is hanging by a thread, then I guess it just doesn't really matter to you. Therefor you don't put in what's needed to get good reviews. How can a 50/50, non-contested, no minor children divorce be dragged out like this? Shouldn't there be a timeline of some kind. Can you just stall a divorce for as long as you so choose? Has our JUSTICE system turned into a JUST "US" system? Where's the justice here where's the humaneness in this. You may not be going through what I'm going through, but I hired you to be mindful and act like you are. That's what makes the difference between an attorney/lawyer who will represent you to the best of their ability and one who puts your case on the back burner for over a year. Good luck to those who choose to move forward with Lane Heginbotham @ Harris Law Office.

He was recommended by a friend who used him to get her green card, we made our first appt with his office and went a few days later on the appt date. we started by meeting another attorney not fernando which we were told he was out of the office for a few days. this lawyer of his told my wife she had 2 options which were the DACA or getting her green card but would have to leave the country for a interview in juarez which scared the hell out of my wife. we gave the lawyer some info on her past and told him when she was younger her father started the process but he told us since she had gotten married with a illegal that it voided that process. well we started the DACA process since it was something we could barely afford at the time since the greencard option was about 3000.00 just for the attorney fees and still had the immigrartion fees also. well we agreed on the amount for the daca process and setup another appt to bring all the required paperwork so the lawyer could put it together in a packet with paperwork the lawyer will fill out. Funny thing is they got the packet ready but we had to mail it, i would thought they would take care of it but we went ahead and mailed it. months later we recieved a letter from immigration and they requested more information from my wife. a few days later we recieved a copy of the same letter from the lawyers office which i would have thought they would contact us to come in to discuss what is the next step but they didnt. we sent more info to immigration and again a few months later again immigration sent a another request for more detail info and again the lawyers office sent copies to us of the same letter. so we tried to contact the lawyer and explained to the lady who anwsered the phone the situation but she we would have to wait for a appt even thoe we explained the importance of our situation but to her we were just another number to her. so finally we recieved a final notice from immigration telling my wife she was denied for not enough proof of her been in the usa long enough and GED proof. i finally emailed the lawyers office and a miracle happened the acutal lawyer fernando replied stating he had been tryin to contact my wife for the longest which was false we even checked our cell phone records and voicemails and never recieved a call from him or his office just letters from immigration. So we felt that all they did was fill out paper work for us and left us to fend for ourselves against immigration.we tried to ask for a partial refund because i know they did a small amount of work but not enough for the fee they charged us. but they just same NO REFUNDS!!! so if you want a lawyer who never calls or never meets with his clients( he has his assistants do that) then hes the guy for you!!!

They practically don't care. The office staff is rude and getting a return call from them is impossible. The assistant, Rita, is one of the most unprofessional people you will ever speak to. She is beyond rude and talks down on clients over the phone. If you have a question about your case, she never has answers, or she'll "call you back". The attorneys don't seem professional either, and you'd be lucky if you speak with them once or twice while they handle your case. It's been more than a year since they started our case and it seems like all the paperwork wasn't requested by them, therefore it wasn't sent properly. Now they want us to come in again and probably give them more money for a case that isn't even clear to us. You come to these people for guidance and representation, instead they treat you like if they are donating their services and doing you a favor, when they are paid to do their job. I'm sorry I even gave their address to a friend so she can seek their services. I hope she has a better experience than mine so far.

I prepared an outline with all the details of my case and called them to evaluate it (emailed them before the call). The outline is for their convenience to have a quick look if they are busy. They said they went through my case and I need to pay $150 to talk to the lawyer. I am ok with the consulting fee. I ask them: "$150 for how long?" The only response I got was "I am not the lawyer and I cannot answer any questions." I asked three times and got the same answer. I don't think my question is rude or unreasonable. I just want to know how many minutes I can talk to the attorney(Jerry Z. Zhang) if I spend the $150. The assistant has a very rude attitude and is not helpful at all! The only thing she's letting me do is pay the money. If you can endure this bad attitude then go for it. Otherwise, I do not recommend them!

My case was reasonably strong, I'd say, since some friends of mine with weaker profiles got a green card without RFE. But Zhang and Associates fully succeeded in getting me an RFE. I had news highlights for mt research, which they advised me not to include in my application. In the petition letter they drafted, they made my research look weak. Inexperienced with the process, I trusted their decisions and then got an RFE. I saw another applicant's petition letter and realized my mistake in letting them prepare my petition letter. My case was dealt with like an assembly line. One person looked at my letters, another my list of evidences and yet another wrote the petition letter, while an individual called Mr Mai was my point of contact. After I got to know about this, I requested Mr Zhang to change my attorney. At least he was nice enough to give me an attorney who handled all aspects of the documents. Eventually I got my I140 approved. But each and every little thing was prepared by me for the RFE response.

I have had very poor experience with this law firm. As other reviews mention, this group is not knowledgeable at all and you practically end up preparing all your documentation by yourself. I got an RFE because my case was not prepared very well, did not have all the necessary information (which the lawyer never pointed out to me) and in the end I am paying an additional $1000 to respond to the RFE. Even then I had to do all the work including the research about how to respond, writing all the reference letters, preparing and organizing all the documents and come up with additional evidence. They are basically collecting the check and doing nothing except providing some very basic general guidelines. Unless you have a case which is so obviously strong that you will be approved anyway do not hire these people.

We were doing well until about 1 year and a half ago. Immigration case was moving fast and getting approved. He had good service and paralegals at first that explained everything well but then I started noticing him changing staff time after time. I would have to work with someone new and different each time until he said he got rid of all his staff for noncompliance. Then began dealing with him directly just to find him asking me for money upfront when I had already paid almost everything we agreed to but he said since time had past he needed more money but time passed because they didn’t do anything. Either way I payed him and have submitted to him the paperwork requested by immigration about four times now just to find he never submitted to immigration because I looked up my own case. I messaged him on that and for months he has not responded and when he used to respond it was just to give me excuses. No answer now.

We decided to hire her to handle my immigration case and it was the worst decision ever made. This lawyer is so unprofessional and extremely rude. She never answers the phone. Only on rare occasions she called me back, but with very unprofessional manners. I once simply ask her for a receipt of my payment for her service and she told me I didn't pay her in cash so she wouldn't have a receipt which was a big lie. I paid her cash and even offer some extra money right in her office just to rush the process and she denied it. And when USCIS sent notices about my case to her, she didn't even bother to notify or send the notices to me whatsoever. Only until I found out by checking my case status online, she then email me the notices with an unpleasant tone which caused me to respond to UCIS after the deadline. Which cause a delay for my case. This lawyer is out of hand. All she wants is your money without providing the services you're paying for. She will never get anything done. So please do not consider hiring her because you will never get anything done.

PA stated the case was too big for her to handle. Stated insurance company is a big company and the offer is too small. Questioned PA if she would like to drop the case. If we could have the case withdrawn from her. PA stated if we want to withdraw case, no problem. She will do so and hand over files. PA or attorney did not give us notice that she will be claiming a charging lien out of any settlement proceeds we may recover. No documents were signed by us in agreement to withdrawal of case. PA without our consent or documented agreement, notified Insurance company that they no longer represent us We received a call from insurance company, advising us that they have received a letter from attorney stating they no longer represent us. Attorney did not notify or inform us that they will contact the insurance company before or after sending a withdrawal letter. We had meeting at a local public location, PA handed over copy of file and stated she has withdrawn from case. Attorney never allowed us to meet her at her office. Even when we insisted to meet at office. PA still did not inform us that a lien is on the case until we asked and read documents handed over recently. No form of notification was done. No email, no letter, no call, nothing to let us know a lien will be placed on the case. What influenced us to suggest attorney to let go of case is due to the statement PA made, that the case is too hard for her, which drew a concern for us. Also, the check issued from the first case was disburse unethically. The check was written improperly which raised an alert. It took time to have the check reissued and PA became irate, disrespectful, and blamed everything on attorney. In During this time, attorney was out of town as told by the PA. PA stated she couldn't do nothing about the check till the attorney returns and hopefully she does. PA never notified us of the arrival of the attorney as she sated she would. After discussed with PA recently at the same location, to go ahead with case, she stated she does not want to handle our case anymore and it is up the the attorney to make decision on what to do. PA called attorney over the phone. Attorney advised she will not discuss anything if she is on speaker phone. That we should all sit in the office to discuss or she will discuss with PA at a later time and get back with us later in the day. Attorney stated at the moment she cannot make any decisions now that is is currently handling a case and cannot think straight. Attorney stated she will contact us and make an appointment to meet and discuss with us to go over case. Later in the day till the end of day, attorney never reached out to us, PA never reached out to us. We reached out to attorney recently via text, and her reply was, "after discussing with her PA and what her PA had to say, she thinks its best that we find another attorney for the second case. We then asked, "does this mean you will release the lien from the case"? Attorney responded stated, "no, because you fired us a and called my PA a liar". Please I advise do not hire this lawyer for any services. She has a PA that pretend to be the lawyer. She deliberately wrote my check with scratches so I won't cash it. Then took long to reissue my check. Her PA even hung on me, spoke badly to me and attorney does not want to remove lien on my second case she dropped. They are disrespectful, greedy and do not keep to their words and what they initially say they will do.

Chúc may mắn.

I was recommend to Ms. Judith, BIG mistake to go with her after 6 months of handling my case she had terrible communication, she would only talk to me by text which is very unprofessional if you ask me. I would text her and she would not reply back to me. Sadly till the person recommended me had to text her then she would reply back to me. She would set appts with me then came up with a personal problem to cancel. She would only contact me when it was regarding money. Sadly I had to waste my time and money on her with no refund because she claims she worked those hours with me when she really didn't do anything. I found out at the end that she took the LONG way with my case, and did it all wrong. I released her as my lawyer, best decision I made saved me more money and caused me less stress. I would NOT recommend her to anyone. I do hope she learns how to be a better lawyer and have better communication with her clients, because she is really unprofessional in my opinion.

Don't waste your money with Judith , she don't care about your situation , the only thing she wants is your money, if you have a case with Judith good luck but I would recommend to look for another attorney , she never answers the phone not even e-mails or messages unless you are going to pay, she is arrogant and she was never up to date for the latest information on my case, she lied about paperwork and documents she claimed that were sent time ago using excuses and more excuses. Lies and more lies that was one of the reasons I fired her she made me waste more than 4,000.00 dollars in a period of three years with not a significant progress in my case that's why I got rid of"Judith flores/ Saldivar attorney of law"and I feel very happy with my new lawyer.

Mr. Valdez has no business holding a Texas bar license to practice any kind of law whatsoever. I have submitted a formal complaint/grievance to the state bar. He was a court appointed lawyer for a case i had in county court 186 in S.A. He missed completely more than one court appointment. A judge during his absence asked the court clerks in a scheduled appointment "is this the same Jerry Valdez that always shows up late if at all ? ". The clerk simply nodded and said "yes your honor". That's to say he has a well established reputation for being tardy and even absent from scheduled court proceedings. Do not for any reason hire this man. He is a crook, a lier, and has no business practicing law in Texas or any other state for that matter. I will work tirelessly to have him disbarred as he is a detriment to legal community as a whole.

I gave one star because there is no zero stars. She deserves stars in the negative! Very unprofessional, she tells lies big time, does not communicate, does not keep appointments and then on top of that will not file your application, will lock her office during business hours, make up all kinds of stories just to avoid her clients. She even went so far as giving me other people's receipt #s claiming they are mine. I was with this attorney for more than 24 months and paid her thousands of dollars. She did not respond to letters from USCIS and I missed deadlines big time! So please steer clear of this lawyer. Run for your life and don’t look back! Don’t even think of signing her up as a lawyer. If you do, you will have tons of regrets and heartache!

Garza never answered my phonecalls to keep me inform it was always at the last minute I was informed on anything. he is also somewhat unprofessional because when it was meeting to talk about my felony case he turned it into a personal conversation. I have also recently went for consultaion for an immigration matter on a family member and garza didn't even give me a chance because he didn't want to lose a case. He cared more about his reputation than helping me... he may have a lot of experience and good but he is rude and selfish and unprofessional

I’ve known Hector for years… my family has been living an ongoing nightmare for almost 3 years now, and we consulted him on the matter. Decided to retain him, and the case ended up being dropped. It didn’t go anywhere, never even set foot in court or even zoom court for that matter. We’d discussed the likelihood of getting any part of the $7500 retainer back at our initial consultation, and were assured we’d most likely see some return. Fast forward and now being told we get none of it back. He referenced the contract, and said the retainer is nonrefundable, however I do not find that information within the contract. We requested an itemized statement, which he was annoyed by, and days later when we received it, saw that a couple of listed items do not even make sense, and every item listed was charged at an in court rate. I genuinely feel like he played on the emotions, vulnerability and turmoil of myself and my family at the time we chose to retain him. It’s extremely disheartening to think that a friend would do this, considering that this case involved my daughter and grandson, two of the people closest to me that are my world.

This woman never showed up to court. Did a horrible job communicating. Always left us out of the loop in our own case. All she was great at was asking for money. Paid over $3,000 for her to make us miss court dates, plea deals, find a solution to our case, or even show up to COURT. Never hire her. She’s horrible, she shouldn’t even be a lawyer.

I spoke with Mr Lal Varghese to seek consultation on the immigration process. As an attorney, he lacks the patience to listen to the client and just jumps to conclusions. His code of conduct is extremely RUDE and unprofessional. My advise is, talk to him over the phone and you will know what I'm talking about. HE NEEDS LESSONS on HOW TO TALK TO THE CLIENTS, he SHOULD NOT talk down on them. we are the ones paying him! He will add more stress to you life than fixing it. TRUST ME!

What an Immigration Lawyer Can Do for You

An immigration lawyer specializes in helping individuals, families, and businesses navigate the complex immigration process. These lawyers provide legal guidance on various immigration matters, such as obtaining visas, gaining permanent residency (green cards), applying for citizenship, and defending clients in deportation or removal proceedings. Immigration lawyers also assist with employment-based immigration, asylum applications, and resolving issues related to visas or immigration status.

Whether you're trying to immigrate to the U.S., facing deportation, or sponsoring an employee or family member for a visa, an immigration lawyer can help you understand your legal options and navigate the often complicated legal system.

When Should I Hire an Immigration Lawyer?

Hiring an immigration lawyer is beneficial in many situations where you are dealing with U.S. immigration laws, whether for personal or business reasons. Common reasons to hire an immigration lawyer include:

  • Visa applications: If you need assistance applying for a visa, whether it's a work visa (H-1B), student visa (F-1), or tourist visa (B-1/B-2), a lawyer can help ensure the application is properly completed and submitted.
  • Green card applications: If you're seeking permanent residency, an immigration lawyer can guide you through the process, whether through family sponsorship, employment, or the Diversity Visa (lottery) program.
  • Deportation or removal defense: If you’re facing deportation or removal from the U.S., a lawyer can defend your case in immigration court and seek to prevent removal.
  • Asylum applications: If you’re seeking asylum due to persecution or fear of persecution in your home country, a lawyer can help you prepare a strong case and file for asylum.
  • Family reunification: If you're a U.S. citizen or permanent resident looking to bring family members to the U.S., a lawyer can assist with the family sponsorship process.
  • Citizenship and naturalization: If you're ready to apply for U.S. citizenship, a lawyer can help you navigate the naturalization process and ensure you meet all the requirements.
  • Business immigration: If you're an employer seeking to hire foreign workers, a lawyer can assist with employment-based visas, labor certification, and compliance with immigration regulations.
  • Special immigration categories: Immigration lawyers also handle complex cases, such as visas for victims of human trafficking (T visa), crime victims (U visa), or those seeking Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

Hiring an immigration lawyer early in the process can help you avoid delays, errors, and possible denials due to incomplete or incorrect applications.

What Does an Immigration Lawyer Do?

An immigration lawyer provides a wide range of services to help clients with their immigration needs, whether personal or business-related. Their tasks often include:

  • Assisting with visa applications: Helping clients fill out and submit visa applications, ensuring all documentation is complete and accurate.
  • Filing for green cards and permanent residency: Guiding clients through the process of applying for a green card, including family-based, employment-based, or other forms of residency.
  • Defending against deportation or removal: Representing clients in immigration court who are facing deportation and working to prevent removal from the U.S.
  • Preparing asylum cases: Assisting clients in applying for asylum based on fear of persecution in their home country due to race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.
  • Handling citizenship applications: Helping lawful permanent residents apply for naturalization and ensuring they meet all the legal requirements for U.S. citizenship.
  • Employment-based immigration: Assisting employers with the process of sponsoring foreign workers for temporary or permanent visas, including H-1B, L-1, and EB-1 through EB-5 visas.
  • Representation in immigration interviews: Preparing clients for immigration interviews and attending interviews at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) offices.
  • Appealing denied applications: If a visa, green card, or citizenship application is denied, a lawyer can file appeals or motions to reopen or reconsider the case.

How Are Immigration Lawyers Paid?

Immigration lawyers generally charge for their services based on the type of immigration case and the complexity of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many immigration lawyers charge a flat fee for specific services, such as preparing a visa application, green card petition, or citizenship application. Flat fees help clients know upfront what the legal costs will be for a particular service.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex cases, such as deportation defense or appeals, some lawyers charge by the hour. Hourly rates vary depending on the lawyer's experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Retainer: For ongoing immigration matters, some clients may need to pay a retainer, which is an upfront payment billed against as the lawyer works on the case.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some immigration lawyers or nonprofit organizations may offer free or low-cost services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in asylum or humanitarian cases.

It’s essential to discuss the fee structure with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand the costs and payment arrangements.

How Much Does an Immigration Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an immigration lawyer varies based on the type of legal service required, the lawyer's experience, and the complexity of the case. General cost estimates include:

  • Visa applications: For help with visa applications (e.g., H-1B, L-1, F-1), legal fees may range from $2,000 to $7,500, depending on the complexity and the type of visa.
  • Green card applications: Fees for family-based or employment-based green card applications typically range from $3,000 to $10,000, depending on the case.
  • Deportation defense: For defending clients in removal proceedings, costs can range from $5,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and how long the case takes.
  • Asylum cases: Asylum applications may range from $2,000 to $10,000, depending on whether the case is defensive (in removal proceedings) or affirmative (not in removal proceedings).
  • Citizenship applications: Legal fees for filing a naturalization application usually range from $1,500 to $5,000, depending on the complexity of the client’s immigration history.
  • Business immigration services: Fees for assisting businesses with employment-based visas (such as H-1B or EB-5 visas) often range from $3,000 to $10,000 or more.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of costs and fee arrangements before proceeding with legal services.

Top Questions to Ask an Immigration Lawyer

Before hiring an immigration lawyer, it's essential to ask questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise to handle your case effectively. Important questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with immigration cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s family-based immigration, employment visas, or asylum.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee, hourly rate, or retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case and the potential outcomes, including any challenges you might face.
  4. How long will the process take?
Immigration cases can take time, so ask how long it may take to process your application or resolve your legal issue.
  5. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of your case. Make sure you know who will be working on your case directly.
  6. What documents do I need to provide?
Ask the lawyer about the documentation required to support your case, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, or employment contracts.

How to Check the Credibility of an Immigration Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable immigration lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their state bar status: Confirm with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific immigration law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in immigration law and have experience handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their ability to handle immigration cases.
  • Check for industry affiliations: Membership in organizations like the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) can indicate the lawyer’s expertise and commitment to immigration law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an immigration lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Passport and immigration documents: Bring your passport, visa, and any documents related to your current immigration status.
  • Family documents: If you're applying for a family-based visa or green card, bring marriage certificates, birth certificates, and proof of family relationships.
  • Employment information: For employment-based visas, provide your employment contract, offer letter, or other documentation of your job.
  • Criminal records (if applicable): If you have any criminal history, bring copies of court records and other relevant documents.
  • Timeline of events: Provide a clear timeline of any prior immigration applications, visas, or issues with immigration authorities.
  • List of questions: Prepare any questions you have about your immigration case, the process, costs, and the likelihood of success.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer understand your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
