They ONLY help the rich, powerful, and those with connections. Did an excellent job with Ms Carroll, but there are thousands of regular people who suffered abuse on a daily basis and not just one encounter like Ms Carroll, yet this firm only goes for the high profile cases and does not care about the rest of the women out there who endured heinous abuse simply because we are not rich, powerful or have connections.

We had an unfortunate experience with Ms. Elisabeth Kovac today, who was seated next to us on a flight from London to Vienna (OS456). As someone who represents a law firm, we expected a level of professionalism and respect, but sadly, Ms. Kovac’s behavior was anything but. Shortly after we took our seats in 9B and 9C (she sat in 9A), she openly complained about us in German via text, describing us as “two 150kg people that smell like sweat.”. My husband and I were appalled by this unkind and shocking comment—especially since my husband’s weight is half of what she claimed, and I have a medical condition that has led to weight gain. None of us smelled, as we had just showered in the Plaza Premium Lounge before the flight. These were blatant exaggerations. Ms. Kovac even attempted to sneakily take a picture of us twice(!), only to awkwardly angle her camera away when she realized my husband had noticed. When confronted, she offered no apology at all. And yes, we have proof of her actions. This experience was deeply disappointing, particularly coming from someone who should be accustomed to dealing with a diverse range of people of different skin colors, body types, and genders in her profession. Such behavior is not only rude but also unprofessional for a lawyer who, I hope, treats her clients with more respect than she showed us. Perhaps in the future, Ms. Kovac might consider flying business class if sitting next to other passengers is so bothersome to her. I sincerely hope this review serves as a wake-up call for better conduct in the future.

I cannot express enough how much I appreciate all of their work, and I haven't even received a ruling yet. Mr. Hegeman, is an outstanding lawyer and a gentleman. I almost never write reviews but I felt compelled to share my opinion about Mr. Hegeman after he represented me in Delaware County in a highly complex and technical case. We had won bimonthly visitation to have our granddaughter spend Saturday noon to Sunday noon at our home with our initial visitation hearing with a different lawyer My husband and I retained Mr. Hegman to represent us in family court to modify our visitation to add extra time with our eldest granddaughter. Our daughter and her now husband violated visitation with our younger granddaughter. Mr. Hegeman led us to believe we had a very good chance of succeeding in family court. I worked very hard to prepare for our trial by printing out all text messages between myself and the respondents, I prepared several pages of notes for Mr Hegeman with dates, times, and statements from witnesses to prove that the respondents lied on several occasions regarding visitation. He told me that I was one of his most organized clients. Mr. Hegeman did not spend time with us before the trial started to prepare for the trial to discuss our strategy. Instead he was called to work a pro Bono case which delayed our court appearance. During the trial Mr Hegeman would not listen to our concerns while the respondents gave their testimony, and didn't acknowledge what we wrote on the pad of paper he provided during the trial. When the respondents lawyer was trying his best to damage my character, Mr. Hegeman could have referred to my 200 plus pages of text messages that would support my side of the story. We lost our bimonthly visitation with our granddaughter because Mr. Hegeman didn't do the job we hired him to do Mr Hegeman didn't even have the decency to contact us with the judges decision but merely sent me an email!!!! I called him distraught and crying about all we had lost. He had no remorse and told me to have a nice day!!!!! I'm sure he will probably remove my review! Mr. Hegeman why don't you try explaining to our granddaughter why she can't visit with Nanna and Pop-Pop anymore, when she's crying on the phone because she misses us!!!!

My review and stars only refer to Raykin, Yelena. This lawyer is unprofessional and always in a rush. She is not available to do any closings after 2 pm because she said she will get stuck in traffic on her way home. People from the bank agreed to come at 3 pm and she rudely denied my request. She sent a very rude email telling me that if I am late for the closing she will charge a few hundred dollars extra. The closing only took 30 minutes! Stay away from her, she is NOT flexible and willing to work with her clients! Nasty person... I don't even know why we need a lawyer because she was completely useless.

My disabled parent is currently working with this agency on my stepfather’s disability appeal. The senior paralegal B. Lopez has not returned any of our calls. My stepfather’s claim is about to be denied again since SSA has reached out requesting additional information that has not been provided. I’m sure the attorneys and paralegals are super swamped with work as this is an non for profit agency. I’ve worked in agencies like this before and have noticed the challenged workers have there. My frustration lies with the fact that this issue has a huge impact on the families they service, including the disabled who have little to no resources.

I had an extremely negative experience with this law firm and would not recommend their services to anyone. If I could give them 0 stars I would do so. I had my initial consultation with David which lasted only a few minutes. I had some questions about my situation, but he told me he does not work for free and he did not give me any further advice until I signed a retainer agreement. A few days later I received a text from a paralegal asking if I was still interested in their services and to pay a $2,500 retainer. The amount was a surprise to me because David had said that the retainer would be $1,000 during our initial consultation. The invoice they sent me for the retainer was also marked "Past Due" even though it was sent to me before I ever signed a retainer agreement. I believe they did this to get me to pay as soon as possible. After some back and forth with their paralegal over text, I paid $1,000 so that the firm could draft a letter to my landlord. The paralegal then told me to send important documents that I had to the firm. I asked them what documents I should send but never got a response, which is ridiculous because they are supposed to be advising me as to what is important. After hearing nothing I decided to send them a small amount of documents showing I lived at the apartment like cable bills. I followed up with them, and they told me the letter would be ready by 5pm on a Monday. They missed that deadline without giving me any explanation and despite my multiple texts asking them for an update. And while they were very quick to respond to my messages when it came to paying their retainer, it took them several days to get back to me about the status of my letter. Based on this, I told them I no longer wanted them to represent me and asked that they refund me. They sent me a receipt showing that I was only refunded $160 out of my $1,000 retainer, and without any explanation of the work they did. I wrote to the firm the next day requesting a full refund. David called me but mostly talked down to me instead of listening to my concerns and said things like "well you signed the retainer agreement." The firm then sent me a timesheet showing about 2.5 hours of work. According to that time sheet, it took them 1 hour to review the documents I sent (which were just my cable bills and a certificate). They also apparently billed me 1 hour for drafting the letter, which I never received. They also refused to give me a copy of the letter until I said I would be filing a complaint. The letter that it apparently took them an hour to draft was a couple of sentences that I could have done myself. It's unbelievable that this letter reflects two hours of attorney work. They also billed me for almost half an hour for texts I had with their office at their attorney rates. It was a complete surprise to me that I had ever texted any attorney because the person that was texting me said they were a paralegal, and I received messages like "all attorneys are in court right now". When I asked them about this, they claimed an attorney was texting me some of the time. If that is true, that attorney never identified themself as such and almost all of the texts were about payment of their retainer. Why should I have to pay them for that? Ultimately, I received no value from this firm and they refuse to refund me in full. Avoid at all costs

What an Insurance Lawyer Can Do for You

An insurance lawyer specializes in legal issues related to insurance policies and claims. These lawyers help individuals, businesses, and insurance companies navigate disputes involving insurance coverage, claim denials, bad faith claims, and policy interpretation. Insurance lawyers can represent policyholders who feel they've been unfairly denied coverage, or they can work on behalf of insurance companies to defend against fraudulent or inflated claims.

Whether you're filing a claim, disputing a denial, or dealing with complex coverage issues, an insurance lawyer can provide critical guidance and legal representation to protect your rights and ensure you receive the benefits you're entitled to under your policy.

When Should I Hire an Insurance Lawyer?

Hiring an insurance lawyer is advisable in several situations, particularly when disputes arise over insurance coverage, claim denials, or bad faith actions. Common reasons to hire an insurance lawyer include:

  • Denied insurance claims: If your insurance company denies your claim, a lawyer can help determine whether the denial was justified or if you should challenge the decision.
  • Bad faith insurance practices: If you believe your insurer has acted in bad faith, such as delaying payment or failing to properly investigate your claim, a lawyer can help you pursue legal action.
  • Underpaid claims: If the insurance company has offered less compensation than you believe your claim is worth, a lawyer can negotiate for a higher payout or file a lawsuit.
  • Coverage disputes: When there's ambiguity or disagreement about what your policy covers, a lawyer can provide clarity and advocate for your rights under the policy.
  • Business insurance claims: If you own a business and are dealing with commercial insurance claims (e.g., property damage, liability, or professional indemnity), a lawyer can help ensure your business receives proper coverage.
  • Third-party claims: If you're being sued for liability and your insurance company refuses to defend or indemnify you, an insurance lawyer can help enforce your coverage rights.
  • Appealing long-term disability claims: If your disability insurance claim has been denied, a lawyer can assist in gathering evidence and appealing the decision to get the benefits you deserve.

What Does an Insurance Lawyer Do?

An insurance lawyer provides a wide range of services to assist with insurance-related legal issues. These can include:

  • Reviewing insurance policies: A lawyer can review your insurance policy to ensure you understand your rights and obligations, as well as clarify what coverage is provided.
  • Filing insurance claims: Assisting with the preparation and filing of claims to ensure all necessary documentation is submitted correctly.
  • Challenging claim denials: If your claim has been denied, a lawyer can investigate the reasons for denial and file appeals or lawsuits to challenge the decision.
  • Litigating bad faith claims: Representing clients in bad faith insurance cases, where the insurer fails to act in good faith by unfairly delaying, denying, or underpaying a valid claim.
  • Negotiating settlements: Helping policyholders negotiate settlements with insurance companies to receive fair compensation for claims.
  • Defending against fraudulent claims: Representing insurance companies to defend against false or exaggerated claims filed by policyholders or third parties.
  • Handling disputes over policy language: Interpreting complex insurance policies and resolving disputes between the insured and the insurer regarding coverage limits, exclusions, and conditions.

How Are Insurance Lawyers Paid?

Insurance lawyers typically charge for their services in different ways, depending on the nature of the case and the type of insurance issue involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: For many policyholders disputing claim denials or underpayments, lawyers work on a contingency basis. This means the lawyer only gets paid if they win or settle the case, taking a percentage (usually between 25% and 40%) of the recovered amount.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing legal issues, such as bad faith lawsuits or business insurance disputes, insurance lawyers may charge an hourly rate. This rate varies depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For simpler matters, such as reviewing an insurance policy or helping file a claim, some lawyers charge a flat fee for their services.
  • Retainer: For businesses or clients with ongoing legal needs, an insurance lawyer may require a retainer fee, which is an upfront payment for future services.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure with your lawyer during the initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Insurance Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an insurance lawyer depends on the complexity of the case, the lawyer's experience, and the payment structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fees: If your lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, you won’t pay any fees upfront, but the lawyer will take a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Hourly rates for insurance lawyers generally range from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location. Complex cases involving bad faith or high-value business claims may require significant hours, leading to higher legal costs.
  • Flat fees: For specific services, such as reviewing an insurance policy, lawyers may charge a flat fee ranging from $500 to $2,500, depending on the complexity of the task.
  • Retainers: Businesses or individuals seeking ongoing insurance legal services may pay a retainer, which can range from $5,000 to $20,000 or more, depending on the lawyer and scope of work.

Make sure to discuss costs and payment structures with your lawyer before proceeding to understand how much the services will cost.

Top Questions to Ask an Insurance Lawyer

Before hiring an insurance lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What experience do you have with insurance law?
Ensure the lawyer has specific experience handling cases involving your type of insurance, whether it’s auto, health, home, or business-related.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on contingency, hourly rates, or flat fees, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is your success rate with insurance disputes?
Ask about the lawyer’s track record in winning or settling cases similar to yours.
  4. What are my chances of success?
A good lawyer will provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and outline the possible outcomes.
  5. How long will the process take?
Get an estimate of how long it will take to resolve your claim or dispute, as some cases can extend over months or even years.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle some aspects of your case. Make sure you know who will be managing your case.

How to Check the Credibility of an Insurance Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a reputable insurance lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Review their experience in insurance law: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in insurance law and have experience with cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Search for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s expertise and professionalism.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have dealt with similar insurance issues.
  • Check for industry memberships: Membership in organizations like the American Bar Association’s Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) can indicate the lawyer’s focus on insurance law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an insurance lawyer, come prepared with the following documents and information:

  • A copy of your insurance policy: Bring the policy related to your claim or dispute so the lawyer can review the coverage details.
  • Any correspondence with the insurance company: Provide copies of letters, emails, or other communications between you and your insurer regarding the claim or denial.
  • Proof of claim and supporting documents: Bring any documentation you have submitted with your claim, including receipts, invoices, photos, medical records, or repair estimates.
  • List of questions: Prepare a list of questions you want to ask about your case, the legal process, and the potential outcomes.
  • Timeline of events: Be ready to provide a clear timeline of the incident that led to the claim and any steps you’ve taken with your insurance company.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can ensure that the lawyer has all the information they need to assess your case and provide the best legal advice.
