These people are some of the world’s best. They helped me every step of the way start and grow my advertising and communications business into a global powerhouse. Their advice, their practical advice, their genuine concern for our firm and its principals, their knowledge of the industry and our clients proved invaluable at every stage. And they continued to provide invaluable services when we sold our company and to its new owners. They are doing the same for the firm I work for now. Work with them. You won’t be disappointed. I’d bet you’d be as delighted as I was. They get it. As their website says, “legal mastery is essential but insufficient. Even the best lawyering must work in tandem with business realities.” They demonstrate genuine care for you, your goals and success. Most lawyers I’ve worked see all the problems, they will help you find the path thru them!!

Excessive consultation and legal fees. Information received in consultation conversation can be googled. I consulted with an estate planning lawyer who claimed the fees covered 30+ preparation hours. What preparation? She responded to an email inquiry and scheduled a call with me. which she stretched out to 90 mins when it could have been wrapped up in 60 mins. During the call, she took notes - none of which were followed up on because I chose not to move forward after being given an estimate of $15,000 for services - which were 3x what other comparable lawyers were charging. She did no research and no other work to justify a $750 fee charged. Unless you are in an extremely high wealth bracket, I recommend bypassing their services. Set up calls with firms that do not charge for consultation unless you are 100% certain you will be engaging their services. In that case, the fee will be applied to said services. It's shocking how exploitative legal entities can be for estate planning services. No wonder so many people pass away without a will and their estates have to be probated. I also advise researching legal services before you need them to avoid being exploited when under stress, duress or urgency. Unfortunately, there are lawyers and legal firms out there who will exploit your stress and urgency vs having time to interview and choose legal representation for fit, fairness and level of success representing cases like yours.

Horrendous experience with Melvin and Melvin. They were referred to me by my Realtor for our house closing. Very unprofessional. Closing took 2 and a half months and was delayed so much that it ended up costing us thousands of dollars. I was going to keep my options on them to myself but after receiving the closing paperwork in the mail with “inaccurate” information, I’ve decided to give a review here and on all of my Social Media apps. Attorney, after she screwed up, wrote that I requested funds to be wired to me after the sale. This is absolutely incorrect and the Attorney must know this. It’s well documented via email that she screwed up and again cost me more money to fix her mistake. I’m sure this a CYA situation. Such a silly thing to be “inaccurate” about. This Firm certainly doesn’t need anymore bad reviews but here we are. Too bad the Attorney wasn’t “accurate” in her file. ** using accurate and inaccurate in quotes because I’m sure I’d hear from them if I used the term that actually fits!

I met Ms. Finkelstein when I consulted with her on a family matter. She took her time with me as I was emotional during our consult and answered all of my questions. I followed Ms. Finkelstein's advice and ended up not needing to hire an attorney, but if I did she would be the one to hire. I have and will continue to recommend Ms. Finkelstein to any family, friends or anyone who may need some Legal help.

I called Ms. Finklestein’s office to discuss an important matter and to ask for advice/representation. I spoke with her assistant who said she’d call me back. She didn’t call for a week so I tried again. Same thing. “I’ll give her the message”, her assistant said. Again, another week went by with no call back. On my third call I actually did get a call back. When I spoke with Ms. Finklestein, she rapid-fire asked me a bunch of seemingly irrelevant questions without letting me get a word in to describe the help I needed. The call lasted only a few minutes and I asked if she could advise me. She gave me what I assume is the standard reply in this office “I’ll call you back”. Well, surprise, she didn’t call me back and my motion return date passed. She really hurt me badly through her negligence and I professionalism. I advise all to stay away to avoid the same.

Excellent Work ! After a high end law firm previously failed to obtain results and most wouldn't take the case due to it's difficulty and likeliness of poor results due to complications regarding insurance law or precedent ... Mitchell j Winn succeded in winning our case and basically leaving behind hopes in creating new case law in the lower courts that challenges delivery and proof of loss requirements . The big insurance companies can be evil and deny, deny ,deny. When insurance companies don't want to pay they look for technicalities or loopholes to deny . If you need an attorney that can deal with obstacles and difficult insurance cases he's your guy . Thank you Mitchell Winn... Anthony G

John Burns is a total Bias bafoon! He was appointed court executor for my father in law. He advocated for a very abusive person that evidence is abundance in the court for being abusive . I think he was paid off for personal favors. Because for how questionable bias his report was and he was a babbling imbecile on the stand. He could not explain his reasoning for any of his conclusions. This firm should can him. He is sloppy and unprofessional and just a slime ball attorney who did absolutely nothing positive . He can’t even tell you how long he has been practicing and we are not talking about 50+ yrs he would guess anywhere from 4-6 years? How embarrassing. He is also a total creeper . Beware! If you call this firm I’d say avoid John Burns at all cost. Sorry for the bad review but Mr.Burns is incompetent

Mr.Burns who represents this firm is a bias disgrace who absolutely does not know what he is doing. He is my Father’s court appointed executor very sadly. He has no experience or knowledge of his job. He wrote up an extremely bias report where the multiple people (3) he reported about all say he has completely misrepresented information conveyed to him . His appearance looks nothing like his photo online. His appearance would give some a guess he has a substance problem. He must not be liked at his firm because his last appearance in December on my fathers case he was told he may leave the court room and replied he doesn’t mind sticking around because he rather be here than at his law firms Christmas party. Everyone in the court room looked at him in shock to such a reply. Is the firm full of bullies and poor Mr.Burns? Or is he just such an imbecile he can not match the energy of people at his office that know how to do their job and represent? It is associates like this in your firm who will fumble the ball and ruin a reputation that the law firm would like to have for future clients. Sorry if this firm does not deserve a 1 star but your associate Mr.Burns earned this for you .

Mr. Gordon is one of those rare people who is generally concerned with you as a person and the outcome of your case. I liken him to the sweetest pit bull you could ever meet. He has handled several problems for our family, all with positive outcomes. I would highly recommend Mr. Gordon for all your legal needs.

Jonathan paid attention to every detail in my case. He read everything sent to him (100's of pages) and knew every detail about my complex case. He came extremely prepared to every court appearance and fought hard to keep me protected while at the same time mitigating unnecessary issues that the other lawyer tried to provoke. He was kind, fair and always understanding yet firm and held his ground on all matters. Worth everything because he set my life and my kids lives up so that we can all coexist and finally move forward. Divorce is harder than I ever imagined, save yourself stress fear by getting a great person to represent your case. Can't recommend him enough!!!!!

Be prepared to be pushed aside if your case doesn't seem profitable. Doesn't answer messages. Unprofessional. Hire someone else that will at least tell you if your case is strong or not and won't give up if it is. Good luck one star only because I had to click on one.

This attorney office is God awful. They support the other side and are against low income individuals. They are obviously an organization that supports the real estate market and contributes to putting people on benefits in the street. Sharon, a lawyer there lied and said Good Cause Eviction Law wasn't good across NYS and went against Assemblyman Pat Burke's office. I called to make sure my illegal, discriminatory eviction case was closed, and at first told me it was closed, then proceeded to give me 5 outcomes and go against Pat Burke's office and NYS Division of Human Rights Bronx, NY. She then told me I supposedly had no understanding of the Good Cause Eviction Law. Sharon ought to be fired and get a job at something she is good at, not law.

The worst. I window fell on my head. They replaced my lawyer with someone who was snappy and had an attitude. They dropped me because I complained about her unprofessionalism. Her name is Alicia ellsayed. The absolute worst.

Approximately 20 years ago I was introduced to this firm by one of my friends. David Hoffberg was my attorney. He was very knowledgeable, helpful, personable. He had patience and made sure everything was explained in layman’s terms. I felt as if he was a personal friend at the conclusion of my case. I referred a relative to him. Unfortunately, he left the firm and the attorney that took my relative’s case was rude, lacked patience, did not stay in contact and ultimately told her after she moved out of state they contacted her and told her they wanted to terminate her case. I’m sorry I referred her in the end.

What an Insurance Lawyer Can Do for You

An insurance lawyer specializes in legal issues related to insurance policies and claims. These lawyers help individuals, businesses, and insurance companies navigate disputes involving insurance coverage, claim denials, bad faith claims, and policy interpretation. Insurance lawyers can represent policyholders who feel they've been unfairly denied coverage, or they can work on behalf of insurance companies to defend against fraudulent or inflated claims.

Whether you're filing a claim, disputing a denial, or dealing with complex coverage issues, an insurance lawyer can provide critical guidance and legal representation to protect your rights and ensure you receive the benefits you're entitled to under your policy.

When Should I Hire an Insurance Lawyer?

Hiring an insurance lawyer is advisable in several situations, particularly when disputes arise over insurance coverage, claim denials, or bad faith actions. Common reasons to hire an insurance lawyer include:

  • Denied insurance claims: If your insurance company denies your claim, a lawyer can help determine whether the denial was justified or if you should challenge the decision.
  • Bad faith insurance practices: If you believe your insurer has acted in bad faith, such as delaying payment or failing to properly investigate your claim, a lawyer can help you pursue legal action.
  • Underpaid claims: If the insurance company has offered less compensation than you believe your claim is worth, a lawyer can negotiate for a higher payout or file a lawsuit.
  • Coverage disputes: When there's ambiguity or disagreement about what your policy covers, a lawyer can provide clarity and advocate for your rights under the policy.
  • Business insurance claims: If you own a business and are dealing with commercial insurance claims (e.g., property damage, liability, or professional indemnity), a lawyer can help ensure your business receives proper coverage.
  • Third-party claims: If you're being sued for liability and your insurance company refuses to defend or indemnify you, an insurance lawyer can help enforce your coverage rights.
  • Appealing long-term disability claims: If your disability insurance claim has been denied, a lawyer can assist in gathering evidence and appealing the decision to get the benefits you deserve.

What Does an Insurance Lawyer Do?

An insurance lawyer provides a wide range of services to assist with insurance-related legal issues. These can include:

  • Reviewing insurance policies: A lawyer can review your insurance policy to ensure you understand your rights and obligations, as well as clarify what coverage is provided.
  • Filing insurance claims: Assisting with the preparation and filing of claims to ensure all necessary documentation is submitted correctly.
  • Challenging claim denials: If your claim has been denied, a lawyer can investigate the reasons for denial and file appeals or lawsuits to challenge the decision.
  • Litigating bad faith claims: Representing clients in bad faith insurance cases, where the insurer fails to act in good faith by unfairly delaying, denying, or underpaying a valid claim.
  • Negotiating settlements: Helping policyholders negotiate settlements with insurance companies to receive fair compensation for claims.
  • Defending against fraudulent claims: Representing insurance companies to defend against false or exaggerated claims filed by policyholders or third parties.
  • Handling disputes over policy language: Interpreting complex insurance policies and resolving disputes between the insured and the insurer regarding coverage limits, exclusions, and conditions.

How Are Insurance Lawyers Paid?

Insurance lawyers typically charge for their services in different ways, depending on the nature of the case and the type of insurance issue involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: For many policyholders disputing claim denials or underpayments, lawyers work on a contingency basis. This means the lawyer only gets paid if they win or settle the case, taking a percentage (usually between 25% and 40%) of the recovered amount.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing legal issues, such as bad faith lawsuits or business insurance disputes, insurance lawyers may charge an hourly rate. This rate varies depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For simpler matters, such as reviewing an insurance policy or helping file a claim, some lawyers charge a flat fee for their services.
  • Retainer: For businesses or clients with ongoing legal needs, an insurance lawyer may require a retainer fee, which is an upfront payment for future services.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure with your lawyer during the initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Insurance Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an insurance lawyer depends on the complexity of the case, the lawyer's experience, and the payment structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fees: If your lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, you won’t pay any fees upfront, but the lawyer will take a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Hourly rates for insurance lawyers generally range from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location. Complex cases involving bad faith or high-value business claims may require significant hours, leading to higher legal costs.
  • Flat fees: For specific services, such as reviewing an insurance policy, lawyers may charge a flat fee ranging from $500 to $2,500, depending on the complexity of the task.
  • Retainers: Businesses or individuals seeking ongoing insurance legal services may pay a retainer, which can range from $5,000 to $20,000 or more, depending on the lawyer and scope of work.

Make sure to discuss costs and payment structures with your lawyer before proceeding to understand how much the services will cost.

Top Questions to Ask an Insurance Lawyer

Before hiring an insurance lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What experience do you have with insurance law?
Ensure the lawyer has specific experience handling cases involving your type of insurance, whether it’s auto, health, home, or business-related.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on contingency, hourly rates, or flat fees, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is your success rate with insurance disputes?
Ask about the lawyer’s track record in winning or settling cases similar to yours.
  4. What are my chances of success?
A good lawyer will provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and outline the possible outcomes.
  5. How long will the process take?
Get an estimate of how long it will take to resolve your claim or dispute, as some cases can extend over months or even years.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle some aspects of your case. Make sure you know who will be managing your case.

How to Check the Credibility of an Insurance Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a reputable insurance lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Review their experience in insurance law: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in insurance law and have experience with cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Search for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s expertise and professionalism.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have dealt with similar insurance issues.
  • Check for industry memberships: Membership in organizations like the American Bar Association’s Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) can indicate the lawyer’s focus on insurance law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an insurance lawyer, come prepared with the following documents and information:

  • A copy of your insurance policy: Bring the policy related to your claim or dispute so the lawyer can review the coverage details.
  • Any correspondence with the insurance company: Provide copies of letters, emails, or other communications between you and your insurer regarding the claim or denial.
  • Proof of claim and supporting documents: Bring any documentation you have submitted with your claim, including receipts, invoices, photos, medical records, or repair estimates.
  • List of questions: Prepare a list of questions you want to ask about your case, the legal process, and the potential outcomes.
  • Timeline of events: Be ready to provide a clear timeline of the incident that led to the claim and any steps you’ve taken with your insurance company.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can ensure that the lawyer has all the information they need to assess your case and provide the best legal advice.
