This firm enjoys harassing local businesses. Mr. Adam Miller has been trying to enforce and invalid subpoena for the past 5 months. TRYING is the important word. His shortcomings with paperwork could mean the difference in your case. Use at your own risk!! I would not use an attorney who cant even force someone to produce the evidence needed to defend you or win your case.

Mr. Carter was consulted for title review and assessment of an existing real property whereby the property owner was excluded and denied membership privelages conveyed with the property. Mr. Carter was subsequently hired as plaintiffs representation for litigation. Mr. Carter successfully resolved the matter in favor of plaintiff. The case was complicated, difficult to dissect with multiple defendants. Ultra professional, most attentive, excellent steward, and commanding in the court room.

Mr. Carter is exceptionally well versed in the areas of business and corporate law. His attention to detail and ability to communicate effectively is both efficient and eloquent, thus authoring arguments that stay on point and drive home compelling conclusions that are difficult, at best, to rebut. Further, Mr. Carter is a very giving listener that allows his client the freedom to contribute and opine throughout the process without any condescension, bias, or judgment. HIs sincerity and genuine concern for his client's needs and goals are clearly illustrated by incorporating every relevant angle of an argument into a case while keeping his points focused and consistent. In short, Mr. Carter's finest quality is respect for his client and the rare ability to empathetically engage an individual while maintaining an objective and calculated perspective.

Was told a paralegal would call me by Friday. At 3 on Friday I called back to say that this is pretty important as my husband has stage 4 lung cancer. She told me all the partners were out of the office on Friday, but promised someone would call Monday because of our urgent cancer situation. Still have heard nothing. I am please to have this opportunity to recommend Joe Priore. Joe was very knowledgable about the minutiae regarding the regulations surrounding my case as was able to quickly resolve the situation in the most efficient manner possible. He kept me informed about what was happening and what to expect each step of the way. I felt better knowing that he was on my side. Joe maintains the highest degree of professionalism, and I would not hesitate to recommend him (and in fact have recommended him and his firm to colleagues in the past).

He is very meticulous with his analysis and always imparts knowledge in a manner that is conducive his clients' success. I used The Fab Law Firm to file my divorce and was quoted a price of 3,500 with a max price of 7,500 if we needed mediation. I paid the 7,500 upfront just in case. The case ended up not needing mediation because the ex-wife and I were able to reach an agreement on our own, which we sent to our lawyers to draft. In total I spoke with my point of contact less than 10 times on the phone and less than 20 times via email. I was charged over 6,500 dollars for the work because they charged me for every email they sent to me and or the other law firm, and at times sending multiple emails (conversations) and charging for each response. I am not sure of many of the items I was charged for because it was just shown as hours they logged for work done on my behalf. I really don't understand all of the work that was done because the ex and I wrote our own agreement and just needed it drafted into legal form and submitted. The lawyers in my case didn't negotiate or write any agreement on my behalf, they simply took the agreement the ex and I made and put it into form for the courts, submitted it, and we were done, but somehow my charges still reached over 6,000 when I was quoted 3,500 if we didn't need mediation. In addition I was giving access to a portal to communicate with them called CLIO, however they were very unresponsive and hard to contact there. My case closed July 16, 2024 and I am now waiting for a review before the remaining funds are returned to me. I was told that Felicia has 30 days to review the file before returning the retainer. However I spoke with them today (Sep 19, 2024) over 2 months after my case has closed and was told that she has now been tasked with doing the review but she hasn't got to it and doesn't have a date on when she can because she is busy. I am a entrepreneur myself and run multiple companies, which is why I feel that this is a completely unacceptable way to deal with a client. I don't usually write bad reviews but I do feel like people should be aware of my experience, and hopefully save them some of the trouble I've dealt with.

The first lawyer left the firm soon after I hired her and was ilegally charging me before any paperwork was submiited to me from the bank. If I could give less than one star, I would. Jamie is all too happy to take money, but not happy to be held accountable for the job for which you hire her. She and another lawyer screwed me and my kids, and when I begged and pleaded for her to fix it, make it right. She told me it wasn’t going to affect me and she didn’t know why I was worried about it (see attached email response). To this day, it does affect me, and my children, and she simply didn’t care to make it right after happily accepting thousands of dollars. I am still dealing with a case that she didn’t fix and reached out again to try to have her resolve but she doesn’t even bother to answer. I had to file a bar complaint for her to respond only for her to tell me she feels she did her job. If that were the case why doesn’t the state recognize the order she filed and why won’t she fix it? This lawyer has no integrity, so if you want someone who will take your money and offer no help, this is the lawyer you want. She is overpriced and doesn’t even do her job. It’s a wonder she hasn’t be disbarred.

I had a horrible experience with Icard Merrill, I retained Lindsey Meshberger for a divorce case. There was a constant lack of communication but the 3 biggest problems were #1) changed her hourly billing, one month after retaining her and then when I asked about it, I received no reply. #2) Told the judge in court that the reason she lacked information on my case is because she just received the case when she had the case for 4 months prior. #3) I was not even informed of a case management hearing that I had until it was over and couldn’t participate. At this point, I don’t know whether to consider this maltreatment racist or negligent. Her paralegal, Kathie Summa was god awful and argumentative whenever approached with any concerns. This is an honest review from my very REAL experience with ICard Merrill. I understand that everything can not go my way in a case but there is a level of professionalism and transparency that should be handled with any business, that was not done with ICard Merrill.

After a prolonged divorce proceeding and going through attorneys I ended up with Ms. Lawrence who streamlined my case and came through when I needed her. Ms. Lawrence has some unorthodox ways of handling things but she is to the point, smart, and knows how to open her mouth to defend you. In my final hearing Ms. Lawrence even cited law that the Judge was not aware of. I wish I had hired her from the beginning of my divorce because if I had I would have a lot more money now and wouldn't have been beaten up as much. I was very satisfied with Ms. Lawrence who was by far the most reasonable of all the attorneys I worked with; she knows her business.

Words can't describe how unhappy we are with this firm. We were referred to Ira Silverstein regarding a very delicate case with a seller our company was under contract with to buy his property. The seller is about to lose his house in pre foreclosure he is the heir of the property inherited from his mother. This attorney did not start the probate till after one month of being hired. He said he was busy and also felt ill. He acted all high and mighty when we hired him and it ended up being the biggest waste of time and money we could have ever spent. We came to him so that he can stop the sale in June which he did and got it postponed till July. He then came back and said our only option is to redeem the property and pay the entire balance ourselves. We hired him to get probate going, file quiet title so that we can purchase this property. We wasted time and now the seller has no other option but to lose his home. There was fraud involved in this case from individuals who tried to steal this sellers deed. Even the attorney who referred us to him was aware of this. We truly feel no one cared AT ALL for this poor seller. He never ecen communicated with the seller!! It's truly a shame and sad he charged us almost 3000 dollars to just go and get a sale postponed for a 1 month. He still drafted the docs for probate and sent it to the seller. I'm speechless and saddened more than anything. And in the end all he did was ask if we wanted his services stopped. Truly did not give 1 damn about anything but the money we paid him in our opinion. So sad and broken for this seller.

I hired Mr.Kaplan to handle a short sale on a property. Mr. Kaplan has the girls in his office handle ALL negotiations (qualified or not). The bank we were dealing with was very uncooperative and in hindsight I believe in part because they always had to deal with a girl in this office (not a para leagal) for all contact. Even when the bank specifically said they did not wish to speak to her anymore, Mr. Kaplan did not return their calls himself. I went into his office and requested Mr. Kaplan to make a phone call personally to the bank, the bank would not talk to his secretary any longer, and he agreed to make the call. Two days later he sent me an email saying that he defers all negotiations in his office to the girls that work for him and he belives that if he personally made a call on my behalf it would not make any difference. Mr. Kaplan had our case for 6 months and NEVER made a single call or represented our case himself - even when he was specifically asked to to so. Do not waste your time with this firm, you think you are paying an attorney to represent you when, in fact, you are just hiring a secretary for representaton.

In my initial consultation with Michael Long I explained that I had a dispute with a pool contractor who caused considerable damage to my property while installing a swimming pool and then placed a lien on my property after I refused to pay them in full without an offset for at least part of the damage they caused. Mr Long was upfront and explained that I likely had an uphill battle due to the one-sided contract that I signed, however, after meeting with him and making him aware that I had all documentation, receipts, photographs to substantiate the damages caused, he indicated he had numerous prior dealings with the attorney representing the contractor and would do his very best to help me. In order to get a sense of the legal costs I might be facing, during the initial consultation I asked him to give me a range of what my legal expenses might be and he indicated they would likely be in the ballpark of the $1,500 retainer as long as court appearances and filing/answering lawsuits were not involved. I agreed. In the end (no court appearances or lawsuits were involved), I wound up settling this matter for THE FULL AMOUNT the pool contractor originally wanted, plus paying his firm $3,000.00 for their legal fees. There was zero benefit to me in hiring Michael Long. In the end, he did absolutely nothing to help me. Needless to say, I would not recommend this attorney or his firm Brewer Long.

I'm an attorney who can be somewhat demanding. But on the advice of my best friend, who was a former client of Michael Long, I reached out to him to handle a sensitive issue connected to my employment contract in effect at that time. Michael was incredibly efficient and delivered an answer I could depend on in very little time. He took even less time than I expected and helped me understand what I *could* do -- but even more importantly, offered me advice on what I *should* do. If I or a firend had a similar problem, I would recommend him without hesitation.

Whether you're a business seeking to protect a trademark, an inventor patenting a new product, or an artist protecting your work from unauthorized use, an intellectual property lawyer ensures that your creations are legally safeguarded and helps you navigate the complex landscape of IP law.

When Should I Hire an Intellectual Property Lawyer?

Hiring an intellectual property lawyer is beneficial in many situations where you need to secure, protect, or defend your intellectual property rights. Key scenarios include:

  • Filing a patent: If you've invented a new product or process, a lawyer can help you apply for a patent and ensure the protection of your invention.
  • Trademarking a logo or brand name: To protect your business's brand identity, a lawyer can assist in trademarking logos, names, slogans, or symbols.
  • Copyright protection: If you’ve created an original work (e.g., a book, music, or software), a lawyer can help you register your copyright and ensure your rights are protected.
  • Trade secrets protection: For businesses with proprietary information, a lawyer can draft agreements to protect trade secrets and ensure they remain confidential.
  • Defending against infringement: If someone is using your intellectual property without permission, a lawyer can help you take legal action to stop the infringement and seek damages.
  • Licensing agreements: If you want to allow others to use your intellectual property for a fee, an IP lawyer can draft or negotiate licensing agreements that protect your interests.
  • IP portfolio management: If you have multiple forms of intellectual property, a lawyer can help you manage your IP portfolio, ensuring all assets are protected and strategically utilized.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help you avoid legal pitfalls and ensure that your intellectual property is adequately protected from the start.

What Does an Intellectual Property Lawyer Do?

An intellectual property lawyer provides a wide range of services to protect and enforce your intellectual property rights. They can:

  • File patents and trademarks: Helping you prepare and submit patent or trademark applications to protect your inventions, brands, or logos.
  • Register copyrights: Assisting with the registration of original creative works to ensure your rights are protected under copyright law.
  • Litigate infringement cases: Representing you in court if your intellectual property has been used without authorization or if you're accused of infringement.
  • Draft licensing agreements: Creating contracts that allow others to use your intellectual property while ensuring you retain control and receive appropriate compensation.
  • Manage IP portfolios: Helping businesses and individuals manage multiple forms of intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.
  • Conduct due diligence in business deals: Ensuring that intellectual property assets are properly valued and protected during mergers, acquisitions, or licensing agreements.
  • Monitor and enforce IP rights: Monitoring for potential infringement and taking legal action when necessary to protect your IP from unauthorized use.

How Are Intellectual Property Lawyers Paid?

Intellectual property lawyers typically charge for their services in different ways, depending on the complexity of the work and the type of intellectual property being protected. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For specific services such as filing a trademark or copyright application, many lawyers charge a flat fee that covers all the work required for that service.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex tasks, such as drafting licensing agreements or litigating infringement cases, lawyers may charge by the hour. Hourly rates vary depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Contingency fee: In some cases, particularly for IP litigation, a lawyer may work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win or settle the case. Their fee would typically be a percentage of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Retainer: For ongoing IP needs, some clients may pay a retainer fee upfront to secure the lawyer’s services, which the lawyer then bills against as they work on the case.

It’s essential to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer upfront to ensure there are no surprises.

How Much Does an Intellectual Property Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an intellectual property lawyer depends on the complexity of the case and the type of intellectual property involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Trademark registration: The cost of registering a trademark can range from $500 to $2,000, depending on the complexity of the application and whether there are any issues during the registration process.
  • Patent filing: Filing a patent is often more expensive, with costs ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the type of patent (utility, design, etc.) and the complexity of the invention.
  • Copyright registration: Registering a copyright is usually less costly, with fees typically ranging from $300 to $1,500 for most creative works.
  • Litigation: If you’re involved in an IP dispute or infringement case, litigation can be costly, with fees ranging from $10,000 to hundreds of thousands of dollars, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Licensing agreements: Drafting or negotiating a licensing agreement can range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the terms and complexity of the agreement.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure that the services are within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Intellectual Property Lawyer

Before hiring an intellectual property lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions that will help you determine if they are the right fit for your case. Here are some key questions to ask:

  1. What experience do you have with intellectual property law?
Ensure that the lawyer has substantial experience with your specific type of intellectual property, whether it’s patents, trademarks, copyrights, or trade secrets.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or contingency, and get a clear estimate of what your case will cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success with my application or case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of the chances of successfully obtaining a patent, trademark, or copyright or winning an infringement case.
  4. How long will the process take?
Ask about the expected timeline for filing your application or resolving your dispute, as IP matters can sometimes take months or years to finalize.
  5. What steps will you take to protect my intellectual property?
Ask the lawyer how they will help ensure your intellectual property is fully protected and what strategies they use to enforce IP rights.
  6. Have you handled cases similar to mine?
If your case involves specific industries or technologies, ask whether the lawyer has worked with similar clients and what the outcomes were.

How to Check the Credibility of an Intellectual Property Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable intellectual property lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for specific IP experience: Check their website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in intellectual property law and have successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what past clients have said about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their professionalism and success in handling IP matters.
  • Check for certifications or memberships: Membership in organizations like the International Trademark Association (INTA) or the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) can indicate expertise in intellectual property law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an intellectual property lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant information and documents. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed description of your invention, brand, or creative work: Be prepared to explain what you are seeking to protect, including any unique aspects or characteristics of your intellectual property.
  • Any existing IP registrations or applications: If you’ve already filed for trademarks, patents, or copyrights, bring copies of the relevant documents.
  • Information on potential infringers: If you are dealing with an infringement issue, provide details of the alleged infringer, including evidence of the infringement, such as images, documents, or correspondence.
  • Questions about the process: Write down any questions you have about protecting or enforcing your intellectual property rights, including timelines, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be clear about what you want to achieve, whether it’s securing a patent, protecting a brand, or enforcing your IP rights against unauthorized use.

Being prepared for your first consultation will help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and provide you with the best possible advice for protecting your intellectual property.
