She was assigned to represent my child and well she quit 2 days before trial..We had to beg her for a meeting before the pretrial , she came to court looking like she just rolled out of bed and when asked if she had looked over the evidence we had turned over and she replied NO and asked of we would just like the stuff back? We told her, No she will need it for court. That was almost if not a month ago and we now have court in 2 days and have not heard from her since. We were informed today she withdrew so we now are back at square one with two days notice. In short, find a different attorney and don't waste yours or someone you care about time even meeting with her. Perhaps in a few years she will be more put together.

This attorney is terrible he took on my case and clearly didn't have the time. His bill was beyond unreasonable. He is only concerned with making money. Would tell me one thing then change it. When I questioned his outrageous bill he filed to withdraw saying I spoke disparaging to him and threatened him. He has caused a lot of damage to my case.

Haven't heard any response from him in four months. Left 4 phone messages, he's always "out of the office". Wrote 20 emails, multiple questions regarding my case. Even asked for a statement of services rendered aprox a month ago and have yet to receive that. It seams he is avoiding any communication with me and would NOT recommend him to anyone I know.

Poor professional attitude- my mother paid for the services which went to the office with me for emotional support a few times. My mother was yelled at, degraded as well as my grandmother who was not even there. Not one issue about my case was discussed.. But my mother and grandmother from his words was that the embilical cord to me then my mother to my grandmother was never severed. Just because I had my mother there for emotional support. Ended up firing him.

Caleb is still young so he has lots to learn about society and just general life. His actions as my attorney was very negligent. I would not recommend him at all to anyone that is looking to actually win a case. He also doesn't work alone even though he always takes full credit. Wouldn't recommend as his communication is horrible. And his prices are not credible!

She is not only not timely but quite disorganized and frequently appears confused or mistaken IN COURT. I had to contact her several times the day before court dates to get an update. I never seemed to be a priority. She emailed both the court and the opposing attorney frequently with the wrong case number or wrong format. Basic stuff. I was trying to collect medical bills from my ex for my child. Should have been an easy case. I not only will collect nothing of the thousands I was owed, but am now in a worse position for future medical bills than my original order. Would have been better off not even trying. Spent thousands. Talk about buyer's remorse. Don't waste your money.

Do not hire this attorney..she will not represent you at all!! It’s was bad enough I suffered spousal abuse but combined with her legal abuse of the system they destroyed my life!!!! And when we walked out of the courtroom when it was final she said … The judge would’ve given you some thing for that cabin!!!!!! I only gave it a one star rating on here because it would not let me post without it

I hired Martin Baker to represent me in a civil protection order where I was the defendant, and this case should have been thrown out due to all of the holes in the story. During the consultation Martin laughed about how ridiculous it was and how it didn’t make any sense on what the other party was doing. At this time I put down my retainer fee which was 3 1/3 hours of his time. Come court date it seemed like everything changed once he knew who the plaintiff hired for their attorney. Martin even came out to say “well they hired a good attorney”. He was then coming across as very intimidated by their attorney that he did not argue my case but instead went along with whatever their attorney suggested to him. The temporary agreement that was initially brought to me had very little to do with the case, and absolutely nothing to do with me or the protection order. Not to mention it was a very long term and not guaranteed solution to the case. When I had questioned Martin with that, it was like a lightbulb went off and he then went back to their attorney with the slight change that I had come up with. The whole time during this, my side of the story did not come up in the arguments as Martin seemed to just want to please the other attorney. On top of all of this after the court date when I fired him, he did not refund me any of the money, even though I only worked with him for an hour and half. He is the biggest waste of money and I would not recommend anyone hiring him unless you are looking for a long drawn out case and no one fighting for you through it.

I hired Joe thinking he was a professional and when my current case is no longer active I will go after him for breech of contract and falsfication. I have looked thought more than 12 of his cases and have read several reviews and it seems Joe is working for the prosecution on the side of the defense. I implore you to research your attorney before signing a contract and have factual proof that Joe shared my cases with a mutual friend and had no intentions on actually fighting for the truth. There is nothing worse for an innocent person to find out their own hired and paid attorney is on the other side of justice standing for injustice. I will gladly add my name to this review the day my case is closed and finished. Please research your attorneys- all cases can be read and found with a few searches. Good luck and may justice prevail no matter what the outcome is.

I would definitely most CERTAINLY, NEVER want him, Gary Brockton, to represent me. If your charges says YOU against someone else then, FIND someone else! I swear this man works for the DA office secretly, he didn’t make me feel the least bit comfortable and didn’t care, he didn’t care about my personal life or my kids. I overheard him talking about me TO the prosecutor. He breathes heavy n carelessly tries to unlighten his load by telling single black mothers to take ANY jail time for not even a 30$ offense. He preys on the weak and tries to get them to agree to anything as long as it’s a convenience to HIM & meal time. He makes u feel like nothing for your past. Just DONT hire him, unless you’re prepared to get jammed up

I am an NAACP appointed secretary to the 3170 local chapter of Lima. I was first introduced to Carroll a the public defenders office in Lima. He was wrapping up the conversation with our mutual client. Once I was able to safely secure the client to ta safe location, I asked him "what are the next steps"? he informed me of what he remembers. Be he didn't know exact dates, times, locations, who to report to, or what exactly he signed. I immediately called the public defenders office with the client on speaker phone. The receptionist that we spoke too said "you didn't sign anything". So I sent an email to Caroll Creighton, whom was the attorney that my client had just received a card for, and I took a picture of for evidence. I said to the attorney specifically in the email. "You have two options, 1) email me a copy of your authorization of release form so that I could print it off and have the client sign it. 2) mail a copy of everything the client had signed to him. The next thing I know, I cc'd his supervisor, as well as executive members of NAACP. "I am sure you can appreciate the confidentiality we have with our clients. I am going to err on the side of caution, and not reveal anything communicated between my client and I, or even if we have communicated. And lastly, stating the included saying to add salt to the wound. "Thank you for your concern for Mr. --------. I am happy to know our local NAACP is concerned about him.

Absolutely the worst attorney I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with. Gerbitz represented my husband on charges that were dismissed due to lack of evidence and my husband being innocent. Subsequently Gerbitz advised my husband to plead guilty to a failure to appear on the dropped charges and lied to me and my husband telling us that if he pled guilty he would be given time served, three months he had been incarcerated and that my husband would be released that day. In reality my husband was sentenced to 13 months in a maximum security facility North Central Correctional center with the worst of the worst. Gerbitz was verbal abusive to my husband and family he was impossible to get in touch with. He never provided my husband or family with the motion of discovery. He screamed at my husband at court when asked if anyone promised you anything to take this plea. My husband didn't have a criminal history and is a hard worker and my families main provider. He was also his mother's caregiver and responsible for making any and all major and financial decisions. Without him we are most likely going to lose everything we have and his mother's health has substantially declined. I believe he should lose his license to practice law in Ohio due to his misconduct and deliberately lying to his clients and withholding necessary information. I absolutely believe he is corrupt and violated my husband's rights. Meanwhile my husband sits in prison and my family struggles and day by day we lose more and more and sink lower in to financial ruin and despair. There are no records in online searches of my husband's charge or sentence only the docket and notes stating the case was dismissed and no jail sentence was given. Why is my husband in prison? Something very wrong is going on here. I will get to the bottom of it. Gerbitz will be held accountable for his actions. He might have gotten away with this with others but he won't go without some type of investigation and repercussion regarding this case. I intend to see to it.

What a Juvenile Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A juvenile law lawyer specializes in legal issues involving minors, including those facing criminal charges, child welfare matters, or status offenses (like truancy or curfew violations). Juvenile law lawyers aim to protect the rights of minors and advocate for rehabilitation rather than punishment in criminal cases. They also help families navigate child custody, abuse, neglect cases, and other legal matters involving children.

If your child is facing criminal charges, or you are involved in a child welfare case, a juvenile law lawyer can help protect your child’s rights and work toward the most favorable outcome.

When Should I Hire a Juvenile Law Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a juvenile law lawyer in the following situations where minors are involved in legal matters:

  • Juvenile criminal charges: If your child is accused of a crime, such as theft, assault, or drug offenses, a juvenile lawyer can represent them in juvenile court, advocating for leniency and alternatives to detention.
  • Delinquency proceedings: A lawyer can help navigate delinquency charges, defending your child’s rights and seeking rehabilitative outcomes like counseling, probation, or diversion programs instead of incarceration.
  • Status offenses: If your child has committed a status offense, such as truancy, running away, or underage drinking, a lawyer can help you resolve these issues in juvenile court, often focusing on rehabilitation rather than punishment.
  • School disciplinary issues: If your child is facing school suspensions, expulsions, or other disciplinary actions, a lawyer can help protect their educational rights and challenge any unfair or unlawful school policies.
  • Child protective services (CPS) investigations: If your family is being investigated by CPS for alleged abuse, neglect, or dependency, a lawyer can represent you and protect your child’s rights throughout the investigation.
  • Custody disputes: A lawyer can help in cases involving child custody or guardianship disputes, ensuring the child’s best interests are prioritized and advocating for the child’s rights.
  • Emancipation: If your child seeks legal emancipation from their parents or guardians, a lawyer can assist in navigating the legal process and help the child understand their rights and responsibilities.

Hiring a lawyer early in the legal process ensures that your child’s rights are protected and that the best possible outcomes are pursued.

What Does a Juvenile Law Lawyer Do?

A juvenile law lawyer provides various services to help minors and their families navigate the legal system. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Representing minors in court: A lawyer will represent your child in juvenile court, advocating for their rights and seeking rehabilitative outcomes rather than punitive measures.
  • Filing motions and legal paperwork: The lawyer handles all necessary legal filings, including petitions, responses, and motions to dismiss charges or suppress evidence.
  • Negotiating with prosecutors: In some cases, a lawyer can negotiate plea deals or diversion programs that prevent the child from having a permanent criminal record or serving time in detention.
  • Advising on rehabilitation programs: Juvenile law lawyers often focus on alternatives to incarceration, such as counseling, community service, or probation, helping minors avoid long-term legal consequences.
  • Handling CPS and child welfare cases: If your family is involved in a CPS investigation or child welfare case, the lawyer can advocate for your child’s safety and well-being, ensuring that their rights are upheld.
  • Defending minors against school discipline: A lawyer can help challenge unfair or excessive disciplinary actions taken by schools, ensuring that your child’s educational rights are protected.
  • Advising families on legal options: A lawyer will explain the juvenile legal process to families, offering advice on the best legal strategies and what to expect during the case.

How Are Juvenile Law Lawyers Paid?

Juvenile law lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the time involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many juvenile law lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For simpler cases, such as status offenses or school disciplinary hearings, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all legal services related to the case.
  • Retainer: In more complex cases, such as defending against serious criminal charges or handling a long-term CPS investigation, a lawyer may require a retainer, which is an upfront payment billed against as they work on the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some juvenile law lawyers offer sliding scale fees based on income or may provide pro bono (free) services for families who cannot afford to pay full legal fees, especially in cases involving child welfare or delinquency.

Discuss the lawyer’s fee structure during your consultation to understand the total cost and payment options.

How Much Does a Juvenile Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a juvenile law lawyer depends on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the time involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Juvenile criminal cases: Legal fees for defending a minor in juvenile criminal cases can range from $2,000 to $10,000 or more, depending on the severity of the charges and whether the case goes to trial.
  • Status offenses: For cases involving minor offenses such as truancy or underage drinking, legal fees typically range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • CPS or child welfare cases: Legal fees for representing families in CPS investigations or child welfare cases can range from $2,000 to $8,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case.
  • School disciplinary hearings: Legal fees for representing students in school-related issues may range from $1,000 to $3,500, depending on the legal work required.

Make sure to get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure you understand the full scope of fees and services.

Top Questions to Ask a Juvenile Law Lawyer

Before hiring a juvenile law lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise to handle your child’s case effectively. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with juvenile law cases?
Make sure the lawyer has handled cases similar to yours, whether it’s juvenile delinquency, child custody, or CPS investigations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees, or requires a retainer. Ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my child’s case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of the case, including potential challenges and likely outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Juvenile cases can vary in duration, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what factors might affect the timeline.
  5. Will you personally handle my child’s case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of the case. Make sure you know who will be managing the case and representing your child in court.
  6. What rights does my child have?
Ask the lawyer to explain your child’s legal rights, including their rights during police questioning, school disciplinary actions, and court proceedings.

How to Check the Credibility of a Juvenile Law Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable juvenile law lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for juvenile law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in juvenile law and have successfully handled cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate in juvenile cases.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on juvenile law matters.
  • Check for certifications or memberships: Look for memberships in organizations like the National Juvenile Defender Center (NJDC) or certifications in juvenile law, which can indicate a lawyer’s dedication to representing minors.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a juvenile law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Court documents: Bring any legal documents related to your child’s case, such as summons, complaints, or court orders.
  • School records: Provide any relevant school records, including disciplinary reports, attendance records, and communications from school officials.
  • CPS or investigation reports: If your case involves child welfare, bring any reports or documentation from CPS or other investigating agencies.
  • Timeline of events: Prepare a detailed timeline of events related to your child’s legal issue, including interactions with authorities or school officials.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the legal process, your child’s rights, and potential outcomes for the case.

Being well-prepared will help the lawyer assess your child’s situation more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice tailored to your needs.
