I hired this law firm for my husbend for him to be released for a detainer in 2011. I had called probably 10 lawyer's and they had all denied to take my husbend case. Finally I went down the list of attorneys that were closer to where he was and I called this law firm. I do a free consultation and they told me that he could get out and we'll just listening to them I said forget it and I hired them without taking in the fact of what everyone else said and 1 month later at my husbend court date. Boom he was out. I am sooo thankful I found this firm. Thank you Mr. Ray and Mrs. Patricia..

Did my paperwork incorrectly and attempted to charge me for the correction. He filed with the court an order appointing my son as his own father and changing his name to the wrong name. Then when I asked him to change it quoted me $2k. His secretary yelled at me for questioning that charge. Is that ethical or legal? Get it right with a better lawyer who can read and spell.

Unethical. He made an error on a court order. It states that my son is his own father. When I asked to help change it and even offered to pay the court filing, he requires his retainer. $2500. I wonder if this is a business. Make an error and funnel more money from people? Good idea in theory but save your money and find someone to do it correctly the first time.

I've contacted this attorney numerous of times, regarding my son's case. He is my son's court appointed attorney. When an attorney doesn't do his fullest to defend a person. He is doing unrighteousness. If he gets paid and does his fullest to defend his client; he's actually just taking a bribe to work harder. The Lord God judge your works.

I sadly did not. Overpriced incompetent and in general useless. The staff is pleasant enough but many young and inexperienced and I bet that is to save on the salaries. That is most positive thing I can say. They are horrible at keeping you up to date on your case or returning any phone call. They will draw a case out as long as they can, billing you all the while, by only responding to the opposition attorney The senior partner is more concerned withe his political activities and his retirement than managing or supervising any case. He makes a big deal about his military service and how much he military helps out when in fact the only 6 he has is his wallet. You would be better off representing yourself.

Do not hire this firm. This firm was suppose to take care of a criminal case that i was no billed for as well as two civil cases. Once they had my money (for all matters) i could not get a call back and was not informed of anything ever. When I let them know i was unhappy with the fact that he paid closer attention to my facebook account than my case (which is absolutely true) and the fact that it took him six months to get me an answer from the DA on an expunction when all he had to do was pick up the phone but couldnt bc he had smarted off to them the time bf, he raised his voice and cursed at me, also calling me names. He then took out all of my money from another retainer i paid for another civil matter and withdrew. I will definitely be reporting this unethical behavior to the bar with the help of another attorney.

Had a simple misdemeanor charge, slam dunk dismissal due to clean record. As soon as I paid him some money, he literally went on vacation. I have text messages confirming this. Only ever heard from him if I harassed him with spam texting, and he usually asked for money when we spoke. Only time he ever approached me first was for money. I had to look up all my own court info because he didn't keep me informed of anything at all. When my determination hearing came after almost a year (I had to look this up myself, he informed me of nothing, including the fact that I was required to show up and would have been arrested if I hadn't), I waited for 3 hours, he was a no-show. The court felt bad this had dragged on for so long and dismissed my case! Even the court felt bad because my lawyer sucked! If I hadn't done his job for me, I'd have been arrested! So technically, by doing absolutely nothing, he got me the outcome I wanted, just took nearly a year. But Christ, if you want a competent lawyer, don't come to Arthur Sims.

Douglas Floyd is just about the very worst attorney that one can contact. I just called him to get his opinion on a personal injury case involving a senior citizen who suffered chemical burns from a leaking package that was mailed to her over Amazon.com. Douglas Floyd was extremely arrogant, discourteous, aloof, and inconsiderately dismissive. Without even hearing the extent of the incurred injuries and damages, after about 3 - 4 minutes into the conversation, he said that he will not take the case as he does not think that there is enough money in it for him...

This lawyer, and I use the term loosely, uses her place in family court to reign terror over families. She is supposed to be an advocate for children yet breaks every right a child has. I hired her to be a voice for my daughter in a custody case. Big mistake, she bullied and manipulated my daughter and did the same with me. She clearly expresses favoritism and lacks the ability to present facts in a case. She accuses people of doing things that are inappropriate inwriting but when confronted she denies or hangs up on you. I had to continually request for a year and a half for a copy of her itemized statement of her time on case, she would respond that she doesn't have to provide that to me. She is unprofessional and her demeanor has left my child and I afraid of her due to manipulative attacks and lack of knowledge in the court system. We have filed a formal complaint and can only pray that action is taken before she can ruin another person's life and case.

As said in the previous reviews, Mr. Vargas is rude. He seems to be all about the money. I was advocating for my fiancé, who is in TDC. Who was appointed Mr. Vargas during a case. Mr. Vargas refused to help. The only thing that Mr. Vargas did was ignore text messages and phone calls. He showed up one time to a court case. And did little to absolutely nothing besides show up to the courthouse. I was told by Mr. Vargas over the phone that he would help if I was willing to pay the $300 charge that he charges per hour. I offered to pay that $300 per hour; after offering, Mr. Vargas, then said absolutely no. “I don’t want to take your case. I have paying clients that I’m already assisting” Even though he was already a court appointed attorney on said case. Luckily, I was able to contact the court system. And have Mr. Vargas removed from the case. Yes, it took months for this to actually happen. But thank goodness he was removed. Mr. Vargas is a horrible man. He does not want to actually help his community. I do not understand why anyone gets involved in law if they are not passionate about speaking up against the law, For their clients. I was court appointed this lawyer for a criminal case. Off the bat, I’ll say that his communication skills are horrendous. He does not return calls no matter how urgent the situation is. On one incident he showed up to court 5 hours late. He made absolutely no effort to speak with me about my case. The first two times that he showed up to court he was still unfamiliar with my case details and had to reset multiple times because he was not ready. Extremely dismissive in nature.

Mr. Vargas was appointed as the attorney for my grand daughter in Comal County Jail. The rules for court appointed lawyers is they have to contact their client within 24 hours of being appointed. I contacted Mr. Vargas after the 24 hours had gone by and he yelled at me for 10 minutes about how he did not want me to call him. This was Wednesday and he said he would see her by Friday, 2 weeks later he had not called her and would not return my calls. I called the court and explained the situation. The next day he did show up at the jail and left before seeing my Grand daughter. He came back with 3 court papers for her to sign, refused to let her read them, told her it was for probation agreement. He told her that I was never to call him or the court or the jail again. So we are trying to get a new court appointed attorney. He is mean and rude and does not keep his word

A one star is actually very generous considering Mr. Sandheinrich was hired in January 2019 for a "simple", non-contested case. According to Mr. Sandheinrich, the judge wouldn't have any other choice but award us a favorable outcome. In December 2020, I changed counsel. My new attorney accomplished more in 3 months than Mr. Sandheinrich did in 23 months. There was no follow through, a lot of misguided information and NO resolution. Mr. Valdez has no business holding a Texas bar license to practice any kind of law whatsoever. I have submitted a formal complaint/grievance to the state bar. He was a court appointed lawyer for a case i had in county court 186 in S.A. He missed completely more than one court appointment. A judge during his absence asked the court clerks in a scheduled appointment "is this the same Jerry Valdez that always shows up late if at all ? ". The clerk simply nodded and said "yes your honor". That's to say he has a well established reputation for being tardy and even absent from scheduled court proceedings. Do not for any reason hire this man. He’s handsome, charming, and very good at seeming like he cares in every regard EXCEPT actually doing his job. He would become extremely defensive and annoyed whenever questioned or pushed back on why he wasn’t doing his job. This even extended to remembering simple details, something you would expect of an attorney, but which he was very inept at. Do not hire Michael, and if the court appoints him to you, ask for another lawyer.

I have a sick wife who is an addict. Her sickness became an issue in our relationship, so i seperated from her around October 2019. Covid pandemic hit in March of 2020 and she returned to me pregnant. I cred fornher and insisted she go to rehab if not for just her sake the babies health as well. She went but still had issues with her recovery. When the time came to deliver there were issues with hospitals in Austin violating our rights so we left those institutions against medical advise. Doing so is a right that we are all afforded when we feel the care provided is inadequate and unconstitutional. Fast forward and the baby is born into a respectful institution professional and appropriate. CPS was called. I had fought off officers verbally for over a week and was emotionally and physically drained fefending my and my sick wifes rights to bear our child in any way we saw fit. CPS provided an attorneys to represent each of us. I was given this one. CPS's commissioner sent me a letter clearing me of any wrong doing. This "attorney" who claimed he was representing me would not defend my constitutional rights. He would side with the CPS in just about every matter. Being an attorney provided by the state of Texas, employed through the state of Texas, his interest and loyalties fall there. He wouldnt defend me from his own employer(the state), while misrepresenting himself as "my" attorney. If you want to be misrepresented, lied to and colluded with the opposition in your child case then by all means he is your guy. I wouldnt recommend him to represent anyone for as much as a parking ticket. Good luck to whoever uses this "attorney".

She is a court appointed attorney for my husband in Ellis county. She has had his case for almost three years now. With that amount of time she has not done her job well at all. She doesn't visit you as she should, pushes her own agenda and does not listen or respect her clients wishes. My husband has requested his discovery plenty of times and just today she comes to see him when he has court upon tomorrow with nothing worth showing she's fighting to get him a fair trail. He his a first offender and does have a option to get probation but she isn't fighting for it. Instead she threatens my husband with bogus offers as life, 21 years and 7 years. This is a white man v. black man case in Ellis county. Need I say more to that. Agg robbery with just what The White man has said has put him in this situation. No concrete evidence what so ever. Claims she can't find any video... After 3 years hummm. Brings up other cases that clearly has nothing to do with him or have already been dropped. So not doing your homework either. She had some PI she claimed worked for her as Rita. We spoke to get a few times but have never seen or heard from her again. All this is suspect and clearly shows to me she's working with the county instead of her client. Court appointed or not you still must uphold the law per the State Bar that you swore into. She goes about her practices very unethically. She is never available to meet and always says she is busy. She mostly text a response and gives you very limited information. I wouldn't recommend her at all. She get hostile when you tell her about how unorthodox her methods are and avoids you even more.

My husband was appointed this C.A attorney. The way he spoke to him the first time they met was absolutely unprofessional and down right rude .He accused him of being high on cocaine ,I thought to myself why on earth is this guy so accusatory and so down right rude ,on the next c.d he lied and said he couldn't find my husband so he left .I'm greatful to the kind officer who witnessed the incident,my husband was sitting in front row waiting on his attorney like he was told.So my husband decided against using him and will be retaining new council on his new set date for court .In my opinion ,who wants someone against you and who lies on you to represent you for ANYTHING ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR PRECIOUS LIFE IS AT RISK ,any amount of time is too much.

He took the 1000 dollar retainer and disappeared. Chad is a fast talker and had me convinced he would be the guy for the job. The money was paid by credit card over the phone, and I thought I could rest easy knowing I had legal help. Later his office ignored my requests for filing paperwork. He showed one time in court and did not file any motions as promised. He would not send and invoice for charges, hung up on me multiple times when I asked for an explanation Of my case and why no motions had been filed after 6 months of my ex wife not showing with my son for court ordered visitation. Then later Chad withdrew from my case weeks before my next court date. No warning no phone call or letter. I found out through the distric clerks office. I feel helpless in what happened to me and had hard earned money taken. I live in Austin and their office is in Freestone county. They do not return calls or email, and took full advantage of my situation and putting money in their pocket.I would advise anyone looking for legal help to please avoid this man. He told me everything I wanted to hear and soon as money was sent I was brushed off and it was a very sad situation. I was fighting for custody of my son. If I had proper representation I feel I would have won. Due to extreme negligence by Chad Morgan and no motions filed as promised we didnt even stand a chance. Please do not waist time or money on this man.

This attorney had improper ex parte communications with the judge that negatively affected my case; she misunderstood most of what I told her and would then misquote me; she failed to do her job in a timely and appropriate manner; she failed to follow up; she was rude and would actually yell and name-call; I am told that she prepares for hearings at the last minute though there was no way for me to see that personally.

What a Juvenile Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A juvenile law lawyer specializes in legal issues involving minors, including those facing criminal charges, child welfare matters, or status offenses (like truancy or curfew violations). Juvenile law lawyers aim to protect the rights of minors and advocate for rehabilitation rather than punishment in criminal cases. They also help families navigate child custody, abuse, neglect cases, and other legal matters involving children.

If your child is facing criminal charges, or you are involved in a child welfare case, a juvenile law lawyer can help protect your child’s rights and work toward the most favorable outcome.

When Should I Hire a Juvenile Law Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a juvenile law lawyer in the following situations where minors are involved in legal matters:

  • Juvenile criminal charges: If your child is accused of a crime, such as theft, assault, or drug offenses, a juvenile lawyer can represent them in juvenile court, advocating for leniency and alternatives to detention.
  • Delinquency proceedings: A lawyer can help navigate delinquency charges, defending your child’s rights and seeking rehabilitative outcomes like counseling, probation, or diversion programs instead of incarceration.
  • Status offenses: If your child has committed a status offense, such as truancy, running away, or underage drinking, a lawyer can help you resolve these issues in juvenile court, often focusing on rehabilitation rather than punishment.
  • School disciplinary issues: If your child is facing school suspensions, expulsions, or other disciplinary actions, a lawyer can help protect their educational rights and challenge any unfair or unlawful school policies.
  • Child protective services (CPS) investigations: If your family is being investigated by CPS for alleged abuse, neglect, or dependency, a lawyer can represent you and protect your child’s rights throughout the investigation.
  • Custody disputes: A lawyer can help in cases involving child custody or guardianship disputes, ensuring the child’s best interests are prioritized and advocating for the child’s rights.
  • Emancipation: If your child seeks legal emancipation from their parents or guardians, a lawyer can assist in navigating the legal process and help the child understand their rights and responsibilities.

Hiring a lawyer early in the legal process ensures that your child’s rights are protected and that the best possible outcomes are pursued.

What Does a Juvenile Law Lawyer Do?

A juvenile law lawyer provides various services to help minors and their families navigate the legal system. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Representing minors in court: A lawyer will represent your child in juvenile court, advocating for their rights and seeking rehabilitative outcomes rather than punitive measures.
  • Filing motions and legal paperwork: The lawyer handles all necessary legal filings, including petitions, responses, and motions to dismiss charges or suppress evidence.
  • Negotiating with prosecutors: In some cases, a lawyer can negotiate plea deals or diversion programs that prevent the child from having a permanent criminal record or serving time in detention.
  • Advising on rehabilitation programs: Juvenile law lawyers often focus on alternatives to incarceration, such as counseling, community service, or probation, helping minors avoid long-term legal consequences.
  • Handling CPS and child welfare cases: If your family is involved in a CPS investigation or child welfare case, the lawyer can advocate for your child’s safety and well-being, ensuring that their rights are upheld.
  • Defending minors against school discipline: A lawyer can help challenge unfair or excessive disciplinary actions taken by schools, ensuring that your child’s educational rights are protected.
  • Advising families on legal options: A lawyer will explain the juvenile legal process to families, offering advice on the best legal strategies and what to expect during the case.

How Are Juvenile Law Lawyers Paid?

Juvenile law lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the time involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many juvenile law lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For simpler cases, such as status offenses or school disciplinary hearings, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all legal services related to the case.
  • Retainer: In more complex cases, such as defending against serious criminal charges or handling a long-term CPS investigation, a lawyer may require a retainer, which is an upfront payment billed against as they work on the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some juvenile law lawyers offer sliding scale fees based on income or may provide pro bono (free) services for families who cannot afford to pay full legal fees, especially in cases involving child welfare or delinquency.

Discuss the lawyer’s fee structure during your consultation to understand the total cost and payment options.

How Much Does a Juvenile Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a juvenile law lawyer depends on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the time involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Juvenile criminal cases: Legal fees for defending a minor in juvenile criminal cases can range from $2,000 to $10,000 or more, depending on the severity of the charges and whether the case goes to trial.
  • Status offenses: For cases involving minor offenses such as truancy or underage drinking, legal fees typically range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • CPS or child welfare cases: Legal fees for representing families in CPS investigations or child welfare cases can range from $2,000 to $8,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case.
  • School disciplinary hearings: Legal fees for representing students in school-related issues may range from $1,000 to $3,500, depending on the legal work required.

Make sure to get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure you understand the full scope of fees and services.

Top Questions to Ask a Juvenile Law Lawyer

Before hiring a juvenile law lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise to handle your child’s case effectively. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with juvenile law cases?
Make sure the lawyer has handled cases similar to yours, whether it’s juvenile delinquency, child custody, or CPS investigations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees, or requires a retainer. Ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my child’s case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of the case, including potential challenges and likely outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Juvenile cases can vary in duration, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what factors might affect the timeline.
  5. Will you personally handle my child’s case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of the case. Make sure you know who will be managing the case and representing your child in court.
  6. What rights does my child have?
Ask the lawyer to explain your child’s legal rights, including their rights during police questioning, school disciplinary actions, and court proceedings.

How to Check the Credibility of a Juvenile Law Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable juvenile law lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for juvenile law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in juvenile law and have successfully handled cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate in juvenile cases.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on juvenile law matters.
  • Check for certifications or memberships: Look for memberships in organizations like the National Juvenile Defender Center (NJDC) or certifications in juvenile law, which can indicate a lawyer’s dedication to representing minors.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a juvenile law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Court documents: Bring any legal documents related to your child’s case, such as summons, complaints, or court orders.
  • School records: Provide any relevant school records, including disciplinary reports, attendance records, and communications from school officials.
  • CPS or investigation reports: If your case involves child welfare, bring any reports or documentation from CPS or other investigating agencies.
  • Timeline of events: Prepare a detailed timeline of events related to your child’s legal issue, including interactions with authorities or school officials.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the legal process, your child’s rights, and potential outcomes for the case.

Being well-prepared will help the lawyer assess your child’s situation more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice tailored to your needs.
