Mr. Chu was a savior. He appealed my deportation judgement with the BIA and assisted me in filing an ineffective counsel plea for my previous attorney and having the case remanded. If it wasn’t for Mr. Chu’s diligent hard work and faith in me I would not be in the US anymore. After going to court with me the immigration judge decided to terminate my case and throw it out lacking merit after a 6 year pursuit. Don’t waste your time and money, hire Mr. Chu, he is worth every dollar.

First time meeting Mr. Chu I did not get a good impression of him. I and a family member arrived at his office for consultation. Although, we arrived on time for our appointment we still had to wait for awhile until his meeting with a previous client is finished, which is understandable since important meetings should not be rushed. However, our turn had eventually been procceeded to meet him; a friendly extension of his handshake was not offered, no introduction from his part, a high-mighty attitude or behavior was displayed along with his open-collar loose dark shirt. Perharps, that was his norm of dressing in his office or getting ready for drinks at a high-class bar later, which it was perfectly fine, he deserves to relax with his hard working ethics here and there. It seemed like he already became a judgemental upon us stepping into his office based on his leaned back chair sitting behavior. We presented him a small case (not serious) and wanted to hear from a professional legal aspect. An overcharging fee of 20-25 minutes of consultation, he complied to us of contacting him if we had further legal questions. Later on that day, we called him for a question and sounded like we interrupted him. He claimed he would call us back, but never did. I have met attorneys of similar fields department with high credentials in the past, but their professionalism and positive attitude well exceeded William Chu's.

Mike Dunn was my criminal attorney, and his advice was for me to stay in jail because he thought I would be no billed. I was indicted after waiting 90 days in a horrible tiny jail. He visited me once, and never returned my loved ones' phone calls. He gave ng not a bit of advice prior to court, and I was sat down with the DA to make an agreement. Everything the DA asked me, I'd look to Mike Dunn to see what I should say or do. He literally shrugged. He sat and chit chatted with his brother who was also I the room. I ended up with a horrible plea agreement (10 years probation with a YEAR of "rehab" in a christian facility that was for battered women- NOT rehab) I had already done a total of 6 months on this state jail felony. I asked him how I could just get time served. His reply was "get your probation revoked and then ask for it". Now I'm trying to go to nursing school and because this idiot didn't even try to get my charge adjutified, I am no longer able to become a nurse which is my passion. My conviction was over 10 years ago, but that does not matter.

Mr. Leal was probably the 10th lawyer in the area I met with to discuss my very difficult child custody case, he was absolutely knowledgeable, understanding, and was generally excited about taking my case. Mr. Leal never stopped amazing me, he called and kept me updated every step of the way. He went above and beyond any expectations I had. Mr. Leal methodically researched my case, gathering every piece of evidence we needed. Mr. Leal is the only reason I didn't loose hope during the most stressful time in my life. Mr. Leal worked with me for hours to mentally prepare me for everything that might happen in court. Mr. Leal was always understanding and comforting with me. Mr. Leal astonished me in court, he navigated through the case grace and precision. Don't let his normally sweet demeanor fool you, in court he's a pit bull. I recommend Mr. Leal to everyone dealing with custody issues. Mr. Leal is probably the most educated man I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Mr. Leal will fight for what's right with every tool at his disposal. I can never thank him enough for getting my children out of harms way.

I was appointed, Mr. Bill Stephens, to represent me by the Henderson County Indigent Defense Coordinator on Oct. 2, 2014. Bill and his son, Brad, are both Attorneys and Counselors At Law. Stephens and Stephens have an office in Gun Barrel City just a few miles from my house. I was charged with Assault causes bodily injury to family member. It is Class A Misdemeanor, not a big deal to some, but to me it is a big deal and has become an even BIGGER Deal as it has gone on. When my wife and I first met Bill at his office we found out he had spent time in the US Army and was a Dallas Police Officer before getting his law degree. Now this is a quote from their web site, "When you need to be sure that you are getting the very best legal representation, and not some fly-by-night attorney who is only interested in settling your case as soon as possible, trust the experts at the Stephens & Stephens Law Firm to do everything in their power to get the best possible ruling on your case." Every time I would meet with Bill he had a new plea deal for me. I was offered a small fine and Disorderly Conduct Charge for the first offer and I was told that if I didn't take it the prosecutor said he was going to seek the max punishment. Bill gets the Deputies audio and video recording on a Thursday or Friday and the trial was going to start the following Monday. My wife and I watched it Saturday in Bill's office. The "tape" had some evidence I felt would be in my favor. The victim and her witness filled out written statements, which differ's from what they say on the video and what they said in court. The video also shows that the witness could not have seen what she claims she saw for two reasons, 1) The kitchen breakfast nook and dining area obstructs the view of the back door coming from the basement and 2) I was NOT on top of my niece, punching her in the face and the number changes with each story they tell. I have maintained the same story she pushed me twice and began choking me with both hands. I defended myself and I punched her in the nose one time and she dropped to the floor. During the trial Mr. Stephens only made one objection I do believe, never introduced the audio/video tape or the written statements from the victim and her witness. The only evidence was a single photo of the victim and that was introduced by the prosecutor. The jury returned with a guilty verdict in less than 6 minutes. I don't feel my attorney was prepared for trial and did not represent me to the best of his ability. I don't blame Mr. Stephens or the jury. I blame the system. I have been assigned a new attorney that handles appeals. I did an initial review of Ms. Linda Altier and will provide a follow up review. I asked Mr. Stephens for a copy of my "file" and was told due to the "Michael Morton Act" he could not give it to me. The judge sentenced me to 2 yrs. probation, 20 days in jail, Anger Management Class, Drug Testing, Court Costs, Fines, attorney fees and her hospital bill. I did not report to the jail like the judge told me to do and Mr. Stephens did manage to smooth that out during the last court date where he was taken off my case and the new attorney was assigned. It has been three days and I still have not heard from Ms. Altier.

Greetings to all 💝 I would like to share my experience with Attorney Brian Bernard. I had Mr. Bernard saved in my contacts from a relative in jail that asked me to reach out to him (Brian) in June 2024. About 1 month later my son went to jail and the attorney that I initially reached out to wanted to help for the "low-low" price of $7,500 for a Class "A" misdemeanor with an initial payment of $2,500😂. I sent Brian a text message wanting to know how much should a misdemeanor charge of that nature cost. I was bracing myself for impact of his response (because I am extra broke😂) but his response pleased me. The conversation of the photo is attached💝 Brian had my son out within hours. I was relieved because as parents we want our children to do the right thing and be ok. The day was nearing for me to fly out of town for work, so I was pleased and burden lifted. Moving forward to August 2024, my Aunt called me upset and stated her son went to jail and it would cost a lot of money for the bail bonds to get him released. I instantly said "Aunty call Brian, I am sure he can help and have him released the same day for a fair price💕 " She said text me his info and I will call him (In her still hurt tone). After my aunty called Brian, she called back telling me how excited she was and I could hear it in her soul💕 Then she told me some fun facts about Brian's career from their in person meet (I paid through CashApp😊 so we did not meet in person). My aunty kept thanking me. I said Aunty we Thank God for Mr. Brian Bernard. Names to me are very important because what we are called is what we are as well as what we respond to. For example My name is Jacqueline which means "May God Protect Her" and He definitely has throughout my whole entire life💝 Brian means: High, Noble, Honor and dignity Bernard means: Brave, Hardy and strong Now look at this fair man walk in his purpose according to who and what he is called.💗💖💝💓

My friend has been incarcerated at Lee Sterritt for 8 months & never hears back from Mr. Ashford nor gets visits. In last court appearance he told my friend to stop filing dumbass grievances - the judge even asked if he said this. He stated he did & him, the judge & the DA rep all laughed. Not everyone is guilty. Not sure exactly what he does to earn a salary. Smh.

I am reading the bad reviews about Mr. Ashford and that is not the man that I got for my son case. He was very honest about my son situation and let me know the choices that he had. My son had one of the worst cases you can have. Every time I called him his receptionist would answer and tell me he wasn't in, and she would take a message and make sure he got it. He would call me back when he could, no it was not right away, but he always returned my calls. When you get a lawyer, we have to understand that our family member is NOT the only client they have. He could be handling 20 other cases at one time. He is an attorney for Juveniles and adults. Yes, we all want them to stop what they are doing and cater to our loved ones, I'm no exception to that, but that's just not how it is. We want certain outcomes, knowing darn well it's a 50/50 chance it could go the other way. Be realistic about the outcome of the situation. Just like my son case. It was not what I wanted but it was the best decision for his situation. Then when you don't get the outcome, you want. The attorney gets bashed. They are the attorney for a reason if you could do the job yourself then you wouldn't need him. I had to learn to be patience and know that he would get to me just as soon as he could, and that's exactly what he did. It didn't make me feel less important at all. Respect your attorney, talk with sense when you speak to them, be patience, and be realistic about the situation. Mr. Ashford thank you 1,000 times for your dedication on my son case, and even checking on me to see how I was holding up. If you are looking for an attorney do not hesitate to call him. He is a VERY, VERY, good attorney.

George Ashford III failed to communicate and provide updates on a case. I understand that if the courts a public defender to defend you. The attorney pretty much works for the courts. How is this fair? I feel that he did not fight for me when I needed him the most. Although, I did not personally hire him, Dallas County did, I feel that he could have at least put forth an effort to fight for my freedom or a lesser sentence.

I strongly feel your attorney should fight for you, be the best defense, even if he is court appointed, he still has a title and name to protect. This lawyer didn't help at all, didn't return calls, was annoyed by the continuous attempts made to reach him. Never discussed court hearings. Just simply didn't care, his only option was take a plea or he would withdraw, and not go to jury trial, to find a young attorney. He withdrew. Probably the best thing he did, but he should have not wasted 10 months, because so many things could have been done other than letting you sit in jail, thinking he was a good attorney and was going to stand by you. Don't waste your time, move on.

As a retired police officer and a person who has had a need for a family law attorney, I feel that Paul is hands down the best attorney overall that can be hired. This man seems to genuinely care for people weather you are a client or not. His fees are extremely fair, his attitude is always positive and he can deliver the legal services that are most needed. Since my services were completed over 5 years ago, Paul remembered me and when I had a couple simple questions, he immediately took my call and answered them without seeking compensation before hand. I've been waiting a long time to decide if I wanted to post this review. I'm not a mean-spirited person and when I have a conflict, professional or otherwise, with someone, I tend to want to just put it behind me. But as I've seen friends and family members in the Dallas area work their way through the pain of a divorce, I've decided that I should probably go ahead and bite the bullet. I was extremely happy with Audrey's responsiveness when I came in to see her for my consultation. She seemed to understand exactly what I was going through with my very abusive husband. I paid her the full amount of her retainer. The first thing she did was make a recommendation that I felt was unethical. I decided not to do it, because I was certain my ex-husband's attorney would see right through it since it is a common, if somewhat underhanded, tactic. I don't know if that refusal was why she decided to stop answering my emails and phone calls, but from that point on, I spent more than a full year trying to get her to do what she said she was going to do. I made appointments with her that she didn't attend. I sent hundreds of emails over two years, and she only responded to about 5% of them. She filed motions that she didn't tell me she was going to file, and that I didn't get a chance to review prior to filing. She ignored attempts from my ex-husband's lawyer to contact her and move things along. When I tried to talk to her about how disappointed I was in her lack of responsiveness, she scolded me for sending her so many communications. Most importantly, I recently learned that she did not file the actual divorce paperwork when she said she did, and my ex-husband ended up filing first. She did not adequately stand up for me in court during the initial hearing, and seemed unwilling to schedule any further hearings. She did not deliver paperwork to me that I had a right to see. Working with Audrey brought me an incredible amount of anxiety and grief. Eventually I fired her and hired another attorney. When my new attorney attempted to contact her to get all of the paperwork, she did not receive a response from Audrey's office. After hiring a new attorney, it took only 5 months to finalize a divorce that had, at that point, taken almost two years to work through. Audrey is clearly a very intelligent and knowledgeable lawyer. She came highly recommended from another lawyer I know who held her in very high esteem. In the rare instances when I felt like Audrey was working for me and attending to me as a client, I felt well taken care of. However, on the whole, my experience with Audrey was such that I cannot help but urge anyone going through a difficult divorce process to choose another attorney.

I have hired this young lady to to obtain visitation rights for my children and to hold my children's mother for denying me visitation in the past.without the courts I have absolutely no way of seeing my children. as I have thoroughly explained that to Audrey.I have shown her 10 police reports stating that she deny me my rights to see my children. including one that said she would rather go to jail then to let me see my children. Audrey was not moved at all to help as she took my money. the children are in a household where there was domestic violence. I've told her that I need everything done legally and by the court as you can see and I have experience being a black man going before the policeto see my children I'm already a victim. the first person they want to arrest is me unless I show them document real fast. she did not take me seriously but it seems that she helped the mother as my case got worse dealing with an inexperienced Attorney such as Audrey.Audrey had an opportunity to help to young lady my daughters my beautiful daughters to obtain a relationship with their father whom they love and I love but audrey has failed. Don't know why she did not carry out the orders but it seems that she worked out an agreement with the other parties Attorney because everything she told me she was going to do she did not do. Not only does she represents her people wrongly her appearance is extremely terrible in and out of the courtand to top it all her secretary Mary has been terrible attitude as well I came to Audrey by recommendation of a friend whom I trusted. Do not hire this attorney is he's a joke and I still don't have a relationship with my daughters. in society they say black men don't want to be a part of their child's life look at Audrey she's part of the reason because we want to be a part of our children's life we just can't get qualified help

When you begin to consider hiring Shawntell, do your fair share of digging and realize that as she has gotten older she continues to do a poorer and poorer job at representing people. I retained Shawntell with the expectations being high. She talks a very big game, bashed the courts and all of their parts, the police department, and tries to reassure you she is the best for the job. Truly, she is only there for the money. From the beginning of my legal proceedings she was impossible to reach. I would attempt to reach her 2-3 times a week and would get in contact with her receptionist at best. Her para legal Emily was also extremely hard to get ahold of. Emails would go unanswered and phone calls often send to voicemail. When I would get ahold of Emily she would inform me that Shawntell was working tirelessly to resolve the issue and that I would hear from her soon. After releasing Shawntell as my attorney and hiring another attorney the truth came out. My new attorney had informed me that Shawntell had barely requested the discovery of information from the courts 4 months after my initial arrest. She had also informed me that going to prison was inevitable and there was nothing she could do about that but would attempt to get me less time. My new attorney got me probation. Long story short, don’t waste your time/money or risk your freedom.

From the 35 thousand foot view, I'll gladly put this into perspective. Shantell has qualities that other attorney's generally don't have, and those qualities are attractive. The scarcity of an attorney like her in San Angelo have sent demand for Shawntell soaring. I don't doubt she has too much of a work load. Her fees are reasonable and it's not easy to find an alternative, for people who value what she is best at. When I first hired Shawntell in 2011, her business was rapidly picking up. Her attractive qualities have brought in many more clients. I don't expect to text her small questions, like I did then, getting responses to time-critical problems nearly instantly, not to say I can't contact her in an emergency when emotions are running high and I need quick legal advice. As an example, my wife and I both went to an appointment with her. My wife was seeking an amicable divorce. Most attorney's jump at the chance to make money and tend to follow the green and recommend legal actions that stir up conflict. They cash in on family law conflict. Shawntell wanted to know what counselors we had been seeing, how well they helped us and recommended, from her experience, the best counselor in San Angelo. She lost an opportunity to put together divorce papers and make quick and easy money, and put our interest ahead of her revenues. We're still married. On another case, wife and I to hired a separate 1st year attorney to assist us in fighting a custody modification against my former wife. I asked Shawntell to assist as a second opinion to help guide our strategies with her experience. She agreed, and even participated in court proceedings. Not many attorneys would do that. Shawntell is a different breed of attorney, and she doesn't come across as the attorney that make you feel like your world is ending amidst desperation and despair. She's cool! Very friendly, talkative and outgoing. We definitely need more attorneys like her, and the demand is obvious. The other reviews may have it right, but there is a lot more behind her success than those stories. Consider what I've said here. Shawntell may be exactly who you are looking for.

I was represented by Shawntell Mckillop in a custody case against my physically and verbally abusive ex who is my son's father. She helped me a little during the hearing for the temp orders. After the temp orders hearing ended, she informed me that she had represented my son's aunt in her custody hearing which would be a conflict of interest. Between the temporary and final hearings, I attempted to contact her several times regarding my son's dad's family breaking the orders and she would never return my calls. During the final orders hearing, Shawntell didn't do anything she said she'd do and after the hearing was over, I found out that clauses were put into the final orders that I was not made aware of until after the orders were finalized. It seemed a lot like she was working for the other side after the temp orders hearing. I have since been afraid of hiring a lawyer because I fear going through another experience like I went through with Shawntell.

As my review states this attorney is a very smart attorney, but he is very lazy and really unorganized he will lose your evidence because he has no secretary. he will never return your calls until the day before court then he will submit a bill to you that reflects all of this work that he has been doing but it is a lie because he just starts blowing your phone up the night before your court date. he will take all your money and give you no receipts until you ask 100 times then he will throw one together that will eat all of your retainer and reflect that you owe him a couple grand more.....then he will hound you until you pay him then you will not here from him again until the night before court again he is always unprepaired !

Hired this guy several years ago .. I recently found out the work he did for me wasn’t worth the paper it was written on. I reached out to him about the problem . I told him he should fix this screw up free of charge ..He focused on the free of charge. I never heard back from him.. I felt like since he didn’t do it right it the first place and I paid him back then that he should fix it free of charge .. I hired a new lawyer that knew what he was doing and he was able to fix the mess this guy left me with.. If you hire him just be warned his screw ups might come back to bite you in the butt later on …He never even apologized !!!!

I was assigned this woman as an court appointed lawyer. I had to tell her what to do at every turn. She kept extending my case because it benefited Her!!! She doesn’t care about you! I consulted another attorney about what she did and he said that she was a “welfare lawyer”, meaning she shuffled paper around to game the system!!!

Do not use her (Evette) for legal issues especially divorce. She is more focused on establishing good connections/networking within the legal community than defending you as a client. If she has to meet with the opposing lawyer, “BE PRESENT”. She will laugh/joke (about you) with the opposing lawyer if you are not present. Find a lawyer that will represent you.

My experience with Mr. Day was good.. I filed chapter 7, and everything went just fine. He didn't want all the money up front, and I always had a pleasant visit with him. Granted there could have been a bit more professionalism within the office staff, but other than that, I had no problems. I have actually referred a couple of friends to him, and they havent had any issues with him either.

Not dependable and will not return phone calls! Mr. Day wants his money up front, then he disappears. He cannot be reached no matter how many times you leave a message on his office phone or his cell phone. Misses important court dates. I used him years ago, and although I finally got my bankruptcy taken care of, it took him more than 5 months to do anything. Now my daughter is using him for the same thing, and he hasn't represented her in court, won't return phone calls, took her money and haven't heard from him in two weeks. She had to take care of everything herself, in other words, she has done all the legwork that Mr. Day was paid to do.

Won't return calls are the least of your worries with this attorney. LITERALLY charged 3 times what other attorneys cost and when you need to speak to him, you might receive a call days later from an assistant who doesn't know anything either. Will offer suggestions that aren't applicable. The absolute worst experience I've ever encountered with a lawyer. Nightmare. Feels somewhat like he's not your attorney but rather extension of the prosecutions office.

What a Juvenile Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A juvenile law lawyer specializes in legal issues involving minors, including those facing criminal charges, child welfare matters, or status offenses (like truancy or curfew violations). Juvenile law lawyers aim to protect the rights of minors and advocate for rehabilitation rather than punishment in criminal cases. They also help families navigate child custody, abuse, neglect cases, and other legal matters involving children.

If your child is facing criminal charges, or you are involved in a child welfare case, a juvenile law lawyer can help protect your child’s rights and work toward the most favorable outcome.

When Should I Hire a Juvenile Law Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a juvenile law lawyer in the following situations where minors are involved in legal matters:

  • Juvenile criminal charges: If your child is accused of a crime, such as theft, assault, or drug offenses, a juvenile lawyer can represent them in juvenile court, advocating for leniency and alternatives to detention.
  • Delinquency proceedings: A lawyer can help navigate delinquency charges, defending your child’s rights and seeking rehabilitative outcomes like counseling, probation, or diversion programs instead of incarceration.
  • Status offenses: If your child has committed a status offense, such as truancy, running away, or underage drinking, a lawyer can help you resolve these issues in juvenile court, often focusing on rehabilitation rather than punishment.
  • School disciplinary issues: If your child is facing school suspensions, expulsions, or other disciplinary actions, a lawyer can help protect their educational rights and challenge any unfair or unlawful school policies.
  • Child protective services (CPS) investigations: If your family is being investigated by CPS for alleged abuse, neglect, or dependency, a lawyer can represent you and protect your child’s rights throughout the investigation.
  • Custody disputes: A lawyer can help in cases involving child custody or guardianship disputes, ensuring the child’s best interests are prioritized and advocating for the child’s rights.
  • Emancipation: If your child seeks legal emancipation from their parents or guardians, a lawyer can assist in navigating the legal process and help the child understand their rights and responsibilities.

Hiring a lawyer early in the legal process ensures that your child’s rights are protected and that the best possible outcomes are pursued.

What Does a Juvenile Law Lawyer Do?

A juvenile law lawyer provides various services to help minors and their families navigate the legal system. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Representing minors in court: A lawyer will represent your child in juvenile court, advocating for their rights and seeking rehabilitative outcomes rather than punitive measures.
  • Filing motions and legal paperwork: The lawyer handles all necessary legal filings, including petitions, responses, and motions to dismiss charges or suppress evidence.
  • Negotiating with prosecutors: In some cases, a lawyer can negotiate plea deals or diversion programs that prevent the child from having a permanent criminal record or serving time in detention.
  • Advising on rehabilitation programs: Juvenile law lawyers often focus on alternatives to incarceration, such as counseling, community service, or probation, helping minors avoid long-term legal consequences.
  • Handling CPS and child welfare cases: If your family is involved in a CPS investigation or child welfare case, the lawyer can advocate for your child’s safety and well-being, ensuring that their rights are upheld.
  • Defending minors against school discipline: A lawyer can help challenge unfair or excessive disciplinary actions taken by schools, ensuring that your child’s educational rights are protected.
  • Advising families on legal options: A lawyer will explain the juvenile legal process to families, offering advice on the best legal strategies and what to expect during the case.

How Are Juvenile Law Lawyers Paid?

Juvenile law lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the time involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many juvenile law lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For simpler cases, such as status offenses or school disciplinary hearings, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all legal services related to the case.
  • Retainer: In more complex cases, such as defending against serious criminal charges or handling a long-term CPS investigation, a lawyer may require a retainer, which is an upfront payment billed against as they work on the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some juvenile law lawyers offer sliding scale fees based on income or may provide pro bono (free) services for families who cannot afford to pay full legal fees, especially in cases involving child welfare or delinquency.

Discuss the lawyer’s fee structure during your consultation to understand the total cost and payment options.

How Much Does a Juvenile Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a juvenile law lawyer depends on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the time involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Juvenile criminal cases: Legal fees for defending a minor in juvenile criminal cases can range from $2,000 to $10,000 or more, depending on the severity of the charges and whether the case goes to trial.
  • Status offenses: For cases involving minor offenses such as truancy or underage drinking, legal fees typically range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • CPS or child welfare cases: Legal fees for representing families in CPS investigations or child welfare cases can range from $2,000 to $8,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case.
  • School disciplinary hearings: Legal fees for representing students in school-related issues may range from $1,000 to $3,500, depending on the legal work required.

Make sure to get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure you understand the full scope of fees and services.

Top Questions to Ask a Juvenile Law Lawyer

Before hiring a juvenile law lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise to handle your child’s case effectively. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with juvenile law cases?
Make sure the lawyer has handled cases similar to yours, whether it’s juvenile delinquency, child custody, or CPS investigations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees, or requires a retainer. Ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my child’s case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of the case, including potential challenges and likely outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Juvenile cases can vary in duration, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what factors might affect the timeline.
  5. Will you personally handle my child’s case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of the case. Make sure you know who will be managing the case and representing your child in court.
  6. What rights does my child have?
Ask the lawyer to explain your child’s legal rights, including their rights during police questioning, school disciplinary actions, and court proceedings.

How to Check the Credibility of a Juvenile Law Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable juvenile law lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for juvenile law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in juvenile law and have successfully handled cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate in juvenile cases.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on juvenile law matters.
  • Check for certifications or memberships: Look for memberships in organizations like the National Juvenile Defender Center (NJDC) or certifications in juvenile law, which can indicate a lawyer’s dedication to representing minors.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a juvenile law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Court documents: Bring any legal documents related to your child’s case, such as summons, complaints, or court orders.
  • School records: Provide any relevant school records, including disciplinary reports, attendance records, and communications from school officials.
  • CPS or investigation reports: If your case involves child welfare, bring any reports or documentation from CPS or other investigating agencies.
  • Timeline of events: Prepare a detailed timeline of events related to your child’s legal issue, including interactions with authorities or school officials.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the legal process, your child’s rights, and potential outcomes for the case.

Being well-prepared will help the lawyer assess your child’s situation more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice tailored to your needs.
