Sarah and the entire team at Peak Justice was absolutely amazing to work with. Sarah's paralegal was so informative, helpful, and communicative. I only had to do two things: fill out some paperwork and provide a copy of my infraction, and they handled literally everything else. The team kept me up to date on the details of the case, possible outcomes, and possible paths forward. In the end, my traffic infraction was completely dismissed. I will recommend Sarah and the Peak Justice team to anyone who may be in the market for a traffic attorney. They are simply the best and will take exceptional care of you!

Ryan was the only attorney who listened enough to actually help me define what I needed to do. Other attorneys I sought out didn’t listen and just dismissed my situation as too niche, and to go to the Bar Association for a referral (which they don’t do, by the way). Not only was he efficient and effective, he was soooooo incredibly kind and educational. Please go to him if you are the curious type and want to understand legal matters because he’s got a knack for clarity and extremely patient and sensitive, too. He made me feel supported and empowered. Thank you so much, Ryan!!!

Ms. Gause and her partner, Ms Robinette, will work tirelessly to get the truth out in defense of their client. Our son was falsely accused by his disgruntled teenage daughterof raping her. The first trial ended in a mistrial (not defended by Ms Gause). When the accuser realized how Ms. Gause would defend our son (by demanding counseling records and more), the accuser dropped all the charges. If it had not been for Ms Gause and her excellent work our son would probably be in prison now for crimes he absolutely did not commit. She kept us informed of everything she was doing in his defense and was available to us by text or phone at any time. I would recommend her to anyone in need of a criminal defense lawyer.

Emily Gause and Laura Robinett are the best of the best super lawyers in Washington State. I was falsely accused of something I did not do. Before the accusations, I was at the top of my career with great reputation. I was successful through hard work, innovation, and being kind & generous. Unfortunately, I had the misfortune of teaching an immature ethically questionable student clinician who I caught lying, broke rules, and was late for work multiple times. When I counseled this struggling intern, she broke down, cried, and gained my sympathy. Over time, she called me her mentor and acted as though she could improve professionally and ethically. I was wrong. At the end of her training, to benefit her and her future patients, in her grading form, I wrote an honest feedback that she needed to improve professionally and ethically. She got murderously angry, but I didn’t know that she would retaliate the very next day with false accusations. She even lied to law enforcement officers. My boss told me to go with the special agents and answer their questions. *If law enforcement special agents want to ask you questions and accuse you of something that you did not do. Stop the interview. Tell them you want to invoke your 5th US Constitutional Rights. Then, call an attorney stat - Call Emily or Laura ASAP. If you don’t, you will be in a legal nightmare.* Most people believe law enforcement officers are helpful and are unbiased neutral enforcers of the law, and from my experience, this is true. However, when it comes to special agents who are trained as interviewers/interrogators, it seems, these officers will do what it takes, getting you tired, stressed out, shocking you, taking things out of context, using indirect threats, implied promises, hypothetical questions, repeatedly asking the same questions, denying your answers, cutting you off from answering, putting words that they want you to say right after asking a question, tricking you to wrongly remember, tricking you to miss speak, to get you the suspect to “go along” with their line of questioning, and much more. Then, they will write a one-sided mentally biasing report that contain only the pieces of the whole story in order to get you prosecuted. When the human brain is in a mental shock or stressed, it cannot process information correctly. The Special Agents are trained to trigger the stress hormone in your brain. The longer you talk with them, the more likely the stress hormones will make you wrongly remember. Eventually, you will miss speak. This is self-incrimination. Fact is, the law enforcement special agents have qualified immunity when they are interviewing suspects. This means, they can legally lie to you without problems. In my case, the interrogators used all their interrogation tactics with the guise of a neutral interview. In hindsight, I realize now, the special agents didn't care about the actual facts. They just wanted to get me to wrongly remember and miss speak in order to take things out of context to get me prosecuted. It is their job. They are good at their job. Please note: the special agents had evidence the accuser had lied to them. But, the special agents never mentioned this fact in their investigation report. Why wouldn’t they? Remember, their job is to get subjects prosecuted. Investigators will publicly say they are supposed to be unbiased and neutral. But, from my experience, this isn’t true. In the beginning of my case, I had incompetent prior lawyers. Only after Emily Gause and Laura Robinett took my case and pointed out to the prosecutor the non-credible evidence of the accuser and the mischaracterization of the special agent’s report, did the prosecutor offered me a guaranteed way, an SOC, to get my charge dismissed with prejudice. Emily and Laura explained all my legal options and risks, and I am grateful. I most highly recommend both Emily Gause and Laura Robinett above all other defense lawyers in Washington State.

A family friend called me distraught several months ago. Their son - young, well behaved, never before in trouble with the law - had been accused of a serious offense. The police were investigating. The family did not speak English and needed help finding a lawyer and interpreting. I had no idea what lawyer to suggest. Some I called requested astronomical hourly rates. By grace, I found and suggested Mr. Meryhew. Mr. Meryhew was fair minded in his fee structure, skilled in relating to people even those from a different culture, and a good lawyer. We received good news this morning that the young man is no longer under investigation and the allegations against him were found to be groundless. Thank you to Mr. Meryhew for being an excellent intermediary with the police and for consoling the family with patience during a moment of profound crisis.

A big portion of my job involves driving, so when I recently received a traffic infraction I decided to look into options rather than just “lying down” and allowing it to go onto my driving record. I reached out to Mr. Lawrence and I am extremely glad I did. After reaching out and paying the retainer, he assured me that “he had it handled from here”. Everything went extremely smooth. He was always quick to respond to any questions I had and he kept me in the loop with what was going on with my case. He went to court and represented me, I didn’t even have to go at all… and the best part is, he got my ticket totally dismissed!! What more could I ask for? I would recommend him to anyone looking to be represented, and if I ever need his assistance again in the future ( *knock on wood* hopefully I don’t!!), I will definitely be reaching back out to him. Thanks again Mr Lawrence!!!! YOU ROCK!

Ms Carey is the consummate professional. I hugely regret not switching attorneys when another (medical) professional suggested I do so after I had retained an attorney and was in the throes of the challenges of securing legally entitled services for my child. I consulted with her, and she was kind, compassionate, and responsive. A great listener. She cared about my child more than my money. I ultimately decided not to switch which was a mistake, and I may still end up retaining her. She seems to be the best: smart, focused on what is best for child (not her wallet or ego), and wise in the ways of SPS. Do not repeat my mistake if SPS is making it hard to get what your child is legally entitled to.

I've met quite a few lawyers in my life (some who I feel ripped me off), and I have to say Ann is one of the kindest and most generous lawyers I have met. She's extremely intelligent and truly knowledgeable in the areas she advertises--and others such as divorce. Ann is also doing my will. I honestly think she could handle any type of case... Ann also has excellent assistants who are knowledgeable and caring, and give you a warm feeling. Ann did some pro-bono work for me, and I didn't have to ask! I got more than I paid for. Needless to say, I was pleasantly shocked. Ann has also helped children. Hiring Ann gave me confidence once again in lawyers. Try her out first--you won't be sorry.

Even when things got a little sticky in my first time DUI case, Mike knows the right things to bring up and knows how to handle what gets thrown at him. I’m impressed by the confidence, composure and knowledgeability. He knows the right people, which is the biggest name of the game because if you don’t, you don’t have a defense. I’m thoroughly content with how he handled my case and if you are in the south sound area I would strongly advise to at least consult with the guy. At a fair price I doubt there are much better options. My only problem was lack of communication within his own office. I wasn’t able to get ahold of him as much as I would’ve liked to (since he’s busy handling business), and it seemed like one of his representatives didn’t have as much experience but Mike still handled it well.

I was charged with two counts of a gross misdemeanor in 2020 by a Lakewood police officer. Prior to the incident, 2020 was a big mess for me. However this incident was mind numbingly bad and surreal. It all basically stems from me (I do regret drinking at the park) drinking at a park, taking pictures and talking on the phone… Cops who patrol the park every 30 minutes approach me. This is where things turns messy, though I complied with the cop orders, I was triggered by him accusing me of saying “inappropriate things to underage girls” even though he did inform me to leave before saying that, however my mindset was “if you felt that was true you should have never gave me the option to leave” needless to say we got into a hostile like argument, the cop visibly angry and frustrated grab my wrist and arrested me… later found out through Kurt that he wrote a false, disgusting, gross, humiliating police report about that incident with hopes of a conviction. Basically it was a classic crooked cop tactic, but then again, I gave him fuel since I was drinking, and I did argue with him, but you live and learn, 2020 was a year we all want to forget, and of course learn from….. *conclusion* Kurt Stender was the perfect attorney for this case, the man was perfect. Calm, cool, and collective. Very logical, he has a keen sense of common sense, very understandable, he has an instinct that detects whose truly innocent and most importantly, a very honest and sincere attorney throughout this whole ordeal. My case was ultimately dismissed, I asked Kurt about an expungement, he said I wouldn’t need one after the dismissal. What more can you say about this man?

I was charged with a Felony >1-year after I called the Sheriff's Office to report an attack upon myself, family, and pets; during which our house-cat had been mauled to death on our front porch by a pack of marauding dogs. I was knocked to the ground of my front porch during the attack with vicious dogs atop. Said large black guard dogs were cited under RCW 16.08.100 repeatedly over the year prior/after to the attack(s) upon my household, even cited for trespass for the attack that night. Sadly, over the years involved, even more livestock/pets were attacked, even a few other humans. The Sheriff's Office has stated repeatedly that I did what I had to do to protect myself and others from even greater harm. 11-months of court circus later, the Prosecutor's Office finally Dismissed the Felony Charge. Self-Defense does include defending self, others, and property from attack by a trespassing, marauding pack of known-dangerous dogs; especially includes being on your back on your front porch while attacked. Kurt defended my family from the circus of court proceedings. He helped me navigate the emotional roller-coaster of being wrongfully charged when in fact I was the wholly innocent victim of a violent crime. Kurt went above and beyond to ensure that my professional career and my family were shielded and protected. Self-Defense is under attack. Kurt was my Legal Defense in Criminal Court. Through Kurt's intricate and extensive knowledge of the Legal System, the Case was Dismissed just prior to Jury Trial. Kurt is my defense attorney referral for all my family and friends.

Result: Plead to a single gross misdemeanor, served 72 hours of community service, no jail time. The following is my thank you letter I wrote to Mr. Melton upon my plea. I believe this is all you need to know in order to make an informed decision about Mr. Melton and his abilities. To be sure, I very strongly recommend Mr. Melton, unhesitatingly and without reservation. *** "My name is Andrew Melton. I'm an attorney. Your brother, (insert name), reached out to me." Those were the first words you said to me through that glass window in early (insert date). And as far as I'm concerned, they might as well have been uttered by god. I immediately broke down and cried like a baby. And while I only have a limited and garbled recollection of the conversation that subsequently ensued, I knew help had arrived. Your words marked the nadir of my chaos and paranoia. As I prepare to walk into court today with you representing me by my side, the transformation has been palpable - the chaos has progressively morphed into order...the paranoia into serenity. In a time of utter disbelief and despair, you showed up to save the day. You were a beacon of light during a deeply dark, dire, desperate, disturbing, and distressing moment. I will never forget your first words to me and how acutely reassuring they made me feel. I will never forget you. The best part of a dark sky is being able to see the brightest stars. You are a star, Andrew. You are a fantastic attorney with unwavering integrity. Thank you for getting me through this. Thank you for defending me. Thank you for saving my life. Sincerely eternally grateful, (insert my name).

You deserve a good attorney, but you NEED this attorney. Even if charges brought against you for alleged violations of the law are hyperbolic, wildly mischaracterized, bloated, or even objectively false, this may be the scariest event of your life. Even if you know what you did, what you certainly did not do, and know your actions and decisions were wrought from moments of weakness with the best of intentions, this may be the scariest event of your life. Your freedom, your livelihood, reputation, future, friends, and even family can all be at stake. This can be a torrent of physical, mental, and existential crises. Mr. Melton can help guide you. The law is written to protect our society and way of life. Punishment should be dealt out in accordance with the degree of violation of socially accepted norms; this is the basic tenant of a just system of law, our system of law. Unfortunately, there can be times when charges brought are based upon subjective and mischaracterized accounts with, at the very most, highly questionable and circumstantial evidence. Charges and potential punishment can far exceed the intents of a just system. In these situations, details matter. A skilled attorney working for YOU matters. Despite doing their best at a difficult, almost impossible job, law enforcement can be inadequate in exploring these details. You have the fundamental right to remain silent for a good reason. The state and prosecution are very powerful, much more powerful than you. Overworked and under supported public defenders, less skilled attorneys, or those without the personal touch and diehard dedication to justice may not be enough to provide you with fair and just representation. I witnessed this first hand throughout the horrible crucible I had to endure. I learned about the system of law and justice and was able to stay grounded and ultimately reach justice after hiring Mr. Melton. I did not understand how the word 'felony' could even be possible; terrifying, unjust, unfair, impossible. I thought my life was over until Mr. Melton took the time to consult with me and hear my story. He took the time to get to know me and listened to the details. The details mattered to him. This was a hard, complicated, heartbreaking story tainted and twisted by a broken relationship, love, anger, resentment, and addiction. This was a hard case for any attorney, but Mr. Melton took it in stride. He provided a rock solid, objective, even calculated viewpoint when necessary and a level of friendly, approachable support crucial to the process of finding justice for his client. He worked tirelessly, above and beyond, to reach not only a great outcome, but a just outcome. In my case, a resolution was reached in which I was able to look the Court in the eye without resignation and take responsibility for my gross misdemeanor offense. Three felony charges and another gross misdemeanor charge were dismissed because Mr. Melton got to the truth, through the myriad of details, and demonstrated this to the state so that his client got the outcome they deserved. He saved me from disaster, from injustice, and he may have saved my life. His work was truly exemplary. When you need help, when you need the best, you NEED the services of Mr. Melton.

In poor judgement, I hunted deer without a license not thinking that I was going to even see a buck. I did in fact see a buck, decided to take the shot, and killed it. I have never seen a game warden in my lifetime, and as bad luck would have it, as I was dragging the deer towards my truck, a game warden drove up. Busted. The game warden wrote up the citations, but did not specifically call them out, but instead would allow the prosecuting attorney to decide how to cite them. In aggregate, they could have put me in jail for 365 days, up to a $10,000 fine, and a gross misdemeanor on my record. I contacted Mr. Melton and he immediately he claimed that hunting infractions were his expertise, that I shouldn’t be worried, and that he would get a reduced sentence. He was very kind and friendly, knew the law, and knew the hunting industry. Instead of waiting for the prosecuting attorney to charge me with the four citations and then negotiate the charges down, Mr. Melton proactively negotiated with the prosecuting attorney before he formally filed charges against me, resulting in me being charged with only one of four counts, a gross misdemeanor for illegal hunting of big game. No jail time. Two years hunting probation. Fine of $2500. Before the trial, Mr. Melton advised his approach on his strategy. He would indirectly try and get the judge to defer the sentence once my probationary time had been served. The challenge was that Mr. Melton could not overtly ask the judge for it because there was already an agreement in place with the prosecuting attorney and the prosecuting attorney could revoke the agreement. At the trial, the judge accepted the prosecuting attorney’s charges. I was granted an opportunity to state anything I wanted to say. I acknowledged that I made a serious mistake in judgement, was a professional, no prior criminal history, father, and in good standing in the community. I asked that given my circumstances, that judge would consider derring my sentence once my probationary period was up. He grated that. Without the coaching by Mr. Melton, I would have no known that was even an option or something I could ask for at the time of trial. In the end, I was very fortunate at the outcome. After two years of probation, the sentence will be dropped and the only consequence for me is a hard lesson learned, two years probation from hunting, and a fine of $2500. It could have been a lot worse. I am very grateful for the legal acumen of Mr. Melton, his network within the hunting industry, and his tenacity, strategy, insight, and friendliness.

Andrea represented me in case where I was accused of assaulting two minors. The case went to trial and I was acquitted of all charges. It was a stressful experience, and I was happy to have Andrea on my side. Her preparation was thorough. She left no stone uncovered during her investigation pretrial. She did a great job during trial too. I thought her questioning of the witnesses was perfect, and I was very impressed with her approach to questioning the two children who testified in the case. I also appreciated that she was very available for communication with me throughout the whole process. I hope to never again find myself in a similar situation, but if I do, I know who I will be calling!

She was clear and timely in her communication, always made sure I knew how to get in touch with her, explained all the steps we had to follow very clearly, and always did what she said she would do. During the few months that my case was processed, Jason went the extra mile to help me to understand exactly what my situation involved. He took the time to relieve my concerns and explain in terms I could understand, exactly what my options were. He provided compassionate advice while accurately describing the options I had and the ramifications my decisions moving forward, could have on the outcome of my case. Ultimately we decided the best course of action was to contest the validity of the allegations. After 2 hearings in front of the judge, it was such a relief that my case was dismissed. I feel that with a different attorney I would definitely have been looking at a much different outcome. I credit Jason's confidence and proactive approach as well as an open line for consistent communication, to the outcome of my case. I was very grateful to have someone on my team willing to take the time and really put forth such an exceptional effort. I would, (and have) recommended Jason to anyone I have encountered that might have the need for legal consultation.

What a Juvenile Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A juvenile law lawyer specializes in legal issues involving minors, including those facing criminal charges, child welfare matters, or status offenses (like truancy or curfew violations). Juvenile law lawyers aim to protect the rights of minors and advocate for rehabilitation rather than punishment in criminal cases. They also help families navigate child custody, abuse, neglect cases, and other legal matters involving children.

If your child is facing criminal charges, or you are involved in a child welfare case, a juvenile law lawyer can help protect your child’s rights and work toward the most favorable outcome.

When Should I Hire a Juvenile Law Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a juvenile law lawyer in the following situations where minors are involved in legal matters:

  • Juvenile criminal charges: If your child is accused of a crime, such as theft, assault, or drug offenses, a juvenile lawyer can represent them in juvenile court, advocating for leniency and alternatives to detention.
  • Delinquency proceedings: A lawyer can help navigate delinquency charges, defending your child’s rights and seeking rehabilitative outcomes like counseling, probation, or diversion programs instead of incarceration.
  • Status offenses: If your child has committed a status offense, such as truancy, running away, or underage drinking, a lawyer can help you resolve these issues in juvenile court, often focusing on rehabilitation rather than punishment.
  • School disciplinary issues: If your child is facing school suspensions, expulsions, or other disciplinary actions, a lawyer can help protect their educational rights and challenge any unfair or unlawful school policies.
  • Child protective services (CPS) investigations: If your family is being investigated by CPS for alleged abuse, neglect, or dependency, a lawyer can represent you and protect your child’s rights throughout the investigation.
  • Custody disputes: A lawyer can help in cases involving child custody or guardianship disputes, ensuring the child’s best interests are prioritized and advocating for the child’s rights.
  • Emancipation: If your child seeks legal emancipation from their parents or guardians, a lawyer can assist in navigating the legal process and help the child understand their rights and responsibilities.

Hiring a lawyer early in the legal process ensures that your child’s rights are protected and that the best possible outcomes are pursued.

What Does a Juvenile Law Lawyer Do?

A juvenile law lawyer provides various services to help minors and their families navigate the legal system. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Representing minors in court: A lawyer will represent your child in juvenile court, advocating for their rights and seeking rehabilitative outcomes rather than punitive measures.
  • Filing motions and legal paperwork: The lawyer handles all necessary legal filings, including petitions, responses, and motions to dismiss charges or suppress evidence.
  • Negotiating with prosecutors: In some cases, a lawyer can negotiate plea deals or diversion programs that prevent the child from having a permanent criminal record or serving time in detention.
  • Advising on rehabilitation programs: Juvenile law lawyers often focus on alternatives to incarceration, such as counseling, community service, or probation, helping minors avoid long-term legal consequences.
  • Handling CPS and child welfare cases: If your family is involved in a CPS investigation or child welfare case, the lawyer can advocate for your child’s safety and well-being, ensuring that their rights are upheld.
  • Defending minors against school discipline: A lawyer can help challenge unfair or excessive disciplinary actions taken by schools, ensuring that your child’s educational rights are protected.
  • Advising families on legal options: A lawyer will explain the juvenile legal process to families, offering advice on the best legal strategies and what to expect during the case.

How Are Juvenile Law Lawyers Paid?

Juvenile law lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the time involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many juvenile law lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For simpler cases, such as status offenses or school disciplinary hearings, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all legal services related to the case.
  • Retainer: In more complex cases, such as defending against serious criminal charges or handling a long-term CPS investigation, a lawyer may require a retainer, which is an upfront payment billed against as they work on the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some juvenile law lawyers offer sliding scale fees based on income or may provide pro bono (free) services for families who cannot afford to pay full legal fees, especially in cases involving child welfare or delinquency.

Discuss the lawyer’s fee structure during your consultation to understand the total cost and payment options.

How Much Does a Juvenile Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a juvenile law lawyer depends on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the time involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Juvenile criminal cases: Legal fees for defending a minor in juvenile criminal cases can range from $2,000 to $10,000 or more, depending on the severity of the charges and whether the case goes to trial.
  • Status offenses: For cases involving minor offenses such as truancy or underage drinking, legal fees typically range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • CPS or child welfare cases: Legal fees for representing families in CPS investigations or child welfare cases can range from $2,000 to $8,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case.
  • School disciplinary hearings: Legal fees for representing students in school-related issues may range from $1,000 to $3,500, depending on the legal work required.

Make sure to get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure you understand the full scope of fees and services.

Top Questions to Ask a Juvenile Law Lawyer

Before hiring a juvenile law lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise to handle your child’s case effectively. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with juvenile law cases?
Make sure the lawyer has handled cases similar to yours, whether it’s juvenile delinquency, child custody, or CPS investigations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees, or requires a retainer. Ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my child’s case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of the case, including potential challenges and likely outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Juvenile cases can vary in duration, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what factors might affect the timeline.
  5. Will you personally handle my child’s case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of the case. Make sure you know who will be managing the case and representing your child in court.
  6. What rights does my child have?
Ask the lawyer to explain your child’s legal rights, including their rights during police questioning, school disciplinary actions, and court proceedings.

How to Check the Credibility of a Juvenile Law Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable juvenile law lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for juvenile law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in juvenile law and have successfully handled cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate in juvenile cases.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on juvenile law matters.
  • Check for certifications or memberships: Look for memberships in organizations like the National Juvenile Defender Center (NJDC) or certifications in juvenile law, which can indicate a lawyer’s dedication to representing minors.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a juvenile law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Court documents: Bring any legal documents related to your child’s case, such as summons, complaints, or court orders.
  • School records: Provide any relevant school records, including disciplinary reports, attendance records, and communications from school officials.
  • CPS or investigation reports: If your case involves child welfare, bring any reports or documentation from CPS or other investigating agencies.
  • Timeline of events: Prepare a detailed timeline of events related to your child’s legal issue, including interactions with authorities or school officials.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the legal process, your child’s rights, and potential outcomes for the case.

Being well-prepared will help the lawyer assess your child’s situation more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice tailored to your needs.
