I hired this attorney for purchasing a commercial property. The overall impression is he is SLOW. Speaks slow, reviews contract slow, replies emails slow, and even collect payment slow. I ended up paying over $2K bill half way in the attorney review. Not recommended.

I had left Atlantic Health after being an employed physician. I was named in a Medical malpractice case for care that occurred when I was an Atlantic Health employee. I decided to ask for my own attorney, which was my right. Mr Brown “represented” me in a malpractice case, but it really seemed as though he was really representing Atlantic Health (co-defendant) not me. He often represents Atlantic Health, and in retrospect I think he cared more about preserving that relationship than acting in my best interests. I could have paid for my own independent lawyer, but Mr Brown talked me out of that. Another doctor gave a deposition in the case, and I never received a copy of the deposition. Mr Brown did not make every effort to secure an expert to defend me. He did not follow through on all of the leads I gave him for experts, and he never even sent my records to an expert for a formal review. Instead he got a “sidewalk consult” from an expert who apparently told mr brown that the case wasn’t defendable. I have no way to verify that. When the time came for my deposition, Atlantic decided to settle rather than allow me to defend myself. In retrospect, I wish I had paid for my own independent lawyer. I think Mr Brown was conflicted- and that he never really represented me. He responded with hostility when I tried to push for my own deposition, and when I tried to get him to formally hire an expert to defend me (presumably because doing so would have cost Atlantic $) If you have a choice, don’t pick this lawyer

Mr Muscio helped me in NJ off 287 near 78. He accommodated my needs and questions then explained to the judge at court that I had: " a very long commute from northern NJ to Philadelphia, also a recent college graduate with no money, and a heavy foot but no bad intentions." After he explained to the courts I may speed but am not a bad person the case worked out very well. I recommend him to all of my friends. I also still have a clean licenseJessica Duran.

I can not recommend Tom Lenney or the Lenney Law Firm after working with him on our first-time home buying process. He barely spoke with us after our initial contact. Our emails were neglected. He left for vacation during our home inspection negotiation and didn't even let us know he would be out of town. Our realtor ended up having to negotiate the entire deal on his behalf. Looking back, Tom didn't add any value to the process, only frustration.

In my OPINION this man is about as corrupt as one can get. He handled my divorce as a judge and more than half of the proceedings took place behind closed doors. When I attempted to get the tapes of the court appearances it seems about 5 sessions wherein I had appeared before his honor (sarcasm) were nowhere to be found. After 30 years of marriage I walk away penniless. Forced the sale of my Bergen County home for a fraction of what it should have gotten and appointed my ex-husband's attorney as the closing attorney on the sale. The attorney spent at least one morning discussing how pleasant the judge's retirement dinner had been with his secretary or whatever the person who sits up there with him is. Oh yeah he also kicked me out of my house 3 months before it closed. He gave my ex a week longer I believe. I take comfort in the fact that he will be judged himself one day and I would hate to be in his shoes.

I hired Robert G Wilson for a family matter. Instead of fighting for you, he sells you by saying all sorts of self-incriminating things in your name. In fact, this guy does not even have the guts to stand up against the other party even in paper, much less challenging the obviously corrupt judge. Moreover, I had to prod this guy three times for a simple copy of the charge slip. Likewise, he could drag out a motion one week after another for over a month, without feeling uneasy in the least bit. However, he had the cheek to charge 12 hours for coming up with the simple motion, copying straightly from court papers, without providing a necessary legal brief, which is exactly why people hire a lawyer. Surprisingly, to cover up his incompetence, this guy had the nerve to say that it is the custom to not provide a legal brief in the family court. As a result, I fired him before more damage is done. I wish I had never hired this guy in the first place.

My wife and I contacted Robert Avolio to complete our wills and draw up a trust for us. During our initial conversation we gave him most of the pertinent information to complete these documents. When we received the draft documents we noted a few errors involving key information: beneficiaries names misspelled throughout the documents, a specific monetary bequest was omitted and the trustee on the trust was incorrect. All this information was given to Mr. Avolio in our initial conversation. We were then billed to correct these errors. We were under the impression this process would take about two months, it took about four and a half. Mark Frey

Beware of the fees and expenses. Through out the handling of the case, he refused to provide amount paid in expenses. At the end of the case, he surprised me with excessive expenses that were inflated and has not provided copies of the bills as requested. Excessive interest was charged on the total expense pay out. The disbursement sheet contain numerous mathamatical errors, in his favor, of coarse. He failed to notify the lienholder of the Arbitration. He got a poor result on the Arbitration award and could care less. Instead, he decided to take extra money from my recovery to make up his loss. If your looking for a Competent lawyer to look after your interests, look elsewhere.

Bryan works with Geico and handles some of their claims. In 2022 my car was “scraped” by another when they tried to merge into my lane of traffic from an exit lane that was coming to an end. The driver and passenger both got out of the vehicle and came to my car windows and shouted expletives at me in an aggressive manor. I was a bit concerned for my safety so when the light turned green I continued on the highway hoping the other car wouldn’t follow but they did and proceeded to chase me at a high rate of speed around an apartment complex. I called 911 while while being chased to report this instance of road rage. The perpetrators eventually gave up pursuit and took off. I got their plates and gave it to the policeman who came to take the report. There was minimal damage to my car as well as their car. They hit me. Next thing I know I am being sued by the perpetrator for personal injury. A completely fabricated case. I expected Geico and my lawyer who worked for Geico to defend my case to investigate my case…If they had they Could have gathered proof that this woman was lying. Instead they settled!!! 15,000 they gave this person for lies!!! I wanted my day in court!!! Thanks for nothing Bryan and also Geico. Geico must have feared they could have to pay up to 100,000 from my policy… they should have believed me and had more faith in me. I could have proven this woman was lying….

Lisa Gladwell represented me in a civil dispute in which I was to awarded a sum of money by the court. After 2 months I contacted Lisa due to the fact that I had not received payment yet and I was having trouble with the court due to the fact that they had claimed the payment had already been sent out. I was told by Mrs. Gladwell that she could not help me, she wanted nothing to do with the case and I should never contact her again. I would recommend using Lisa Gladwell only if you wish to completely waste any money that you have worked for and search elsewhere as any other attorney could and would do a better job then her.

I asked my divorce attorney for a referral because the case was not in her normal realm of work. She reached out to her network and Mr Begley came back expressing interest. I was not comfortable with him during the first call. I thought he came across a bit crude and a braggart. He didnt feel we had to meet in person - This was a fairly simple insuance claim. The decision was made to hire him. It is still not settled after 4 months, but more disturbing is that Mr. Begley has gone MIA. He's not returning calls, emails or texts. I am leaving messages asking for a final bill/ accounting of what was done so we can terminate the relationship. The lack of communication and sloppy communication when he does is my main reason for rating him so poorly.

Highlights: 1. One of the first issues I had with your “service” was your failure to fulfill your responsibility of keeping me informed of the ramifications of passing the initial closing date we had set for October 25th 2013. As this was my first property and I had no knowledge of the severe monetary loss I could have sustained had the seller pushed to cancel the contract and absorb my down payment. I hired you to guide me on potential issues like this, and let me know what could happen if said date passed. You failed to do any of that and it was not until after the date had already passed and a time of essence letter was issued by the sellers attorney, that I even heard from you and was given an explanation of what was happening. 6. Starting on April 21st 2014 I have multiple documented calls to you notifying you that Leslie was unwilling to provide the soil samples without additional money from myself, that said I left a voicemail asking you to cancel the transaction because you were unable to be reached like so many times before. Roughly a week went by with no response from you or any cancellation letter being sent. During that time Leslie provided all the documentation needed to show good faith to the transaction. This marked the point of no return for my partner and I because you failed to cancel the contract in time, essentially blocking us from being able to pursue her for all of the related fees and the $2,000 I put forth for the tank. Which ultimately forced us to continue with the contract because once again, it would cost us more to walk away than to continue. 7. On May 7th I received an email from you stating the following: “Call me. Seller’s attorney is not buying it. In his opinion you had a mortgage commitment and we were just waiting on your reserve training to end or we would have closed by now. Also he does not believe the denial to be legit and takes the position that mortgage contingency provision of the contract was previously satisfied.. Looks like we are going to end up in litigation if we do not proceed to close. Your call let me know.” Which essentially urged me to continue on with the transaction despite our previous discussion on the phone detailing that if I provided a letter stating that I was no longer eligible for funding I would be able to void the contract and get my $5,000 deposit back. Left with the choice of losing the deposit I decided to proceed forward with the transaction. Only to receive a text message from the seller of the home, Leslie, which I have documented on May 9th 2014 as saying “Hi my lawyer has been trying for two weeks to reach your lawyer he asked me to have you have him reach out to him…” This prompted me to request her lawyer’s number from her so that I could confirm that the conversation took place that you described above. I proceeded to record the end of the call with Andrew who denied having any knowledge of the conversation you claimed to have had with him. I too recorded our conversation when I confronted you about it and you explained early on in the conversation that you had spoken to Andrew over the phone but later in the conversation alluded to a conversation via an email that was no longer able to be located. Obviously this is a matter of grave concern for myself because as you know my wishes were to terminate the contract and salvage whatever remaining money I could from the transaction. However, looking back it is clear that you were not representing me during the transaction but ensuring that the real estate agent that recommended you got paid. Which is likely why you came up with that litigation statement, to scare me into completing the transaction. Although once the seller found out the cancellation was accepted.

Paul Grosswald completely bungled my case. He didn't show up in court three times. He didn't provide discovery or contact the opposing counsel after the judge ordered him to do so. Every conversation was about him trying to get me to settle so his obligation would end because his fee was prepaid. On the fourth court appearance he made it clear that he was not going to be my advocate and I was forced to settle by withdrawing my complaint. He also doesn’t present himself in a professional manner.

What a Litigation Lawyer Can Do for You

A litigation lawyer specializes in representing individuals, businesses, or organizations involved in legal disputes. Whether you're the one filing a lawsuit or you're being sued, a litigation attorney will advocate on your behalf throughout the entire legal process. Their goal is to resolve disputes, either through negotiation, settlement, or trial. Litigation lawyers can help with a wide range of disputes, including contract disagreements, real estate issues, employment disputes, personal injury claims, and more.

Litigation lawyers provide strategic legal advice and manage all aspects of your case, from filing motions to representing you in court, ensuring that your rights are protected and that you have the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome.

When Should I Hire a Litigation Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a litigation lawyer if you're involved in a legal dispute that you cannot resolve on your own. Common situations include:

  • Breach of contract disputes: If a party to a contract fails to fulfill their obligations, a litigation lawyer can help you seek damages or enforce the agreement.
  • Business disputes: Litigation lawyers can represent you in cases of partnership disagreements, intellectual property disputes, or business fraud.
  • Employment disputes: If you're facing issues like wrongful termination, workplace discrimination, or wage disputes, a litigation lawyer can help resolve these matters through negotiation or court action.
  • Personal injury claims: If you've been injured due to someone else's negligence and are seeking compensation, a litigation attorney can help you pursue your case.
  • Real estate or property disputes: When there are conflicts over property ownership, boundary issues, or lease agreements, a litigation lawyer can assist in resolving the dispute.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process is beneficial, especially if a lawsuit seems imminent or you have already been served with legal documents.

What Does a Litigation Lawyer Do?

A litigation lawyer handles all aspects of your case, from the initial investigation to the trial and even the appeals process, if necessary. Their role includes:

  • Case assessment and investigation: Analyzing the facts of your case and advising whether it’s worth pursuing or defending.
  • Pleadings and motions: Drafting and filing documents to initiate or respond to a lawsuit, including complaints, motions to dismiss, and answers.
  • Discovery: Gathering evidence, including depositions, interrogatories, and document requests, to build your case.
  • Negotiations and settlement discussions: Attempting to resolve disputes through mediation, arbitration, or settlement talks before going to trial.
  • Trial representation: Presenting your case in court, examining witnesses, introducing evidence, and making legal arguments before a judge or jury.
  • Appeals: If necessary, filing appeals to challenge or defend the outcome of the trial.

Litigation lawyers are also skilled negotiators and often work to resolve disputes outside of court to save time, money, and stress for their clients.

How Are Litigation Lawyers Paid?

Litigation lawyers typically use a variety of fee structures depending on the type of case, the complexity of the legal matter, and the financial circumstances of the client. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Many litigation attorneys charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and geographic location.
  • Flat fees: For specific, predictable legal tasks (such as filing a motion), lawyers may offer a flat fee.
  • Contingency fees: In personal injury or other cases where you seek damages, a lawyer may work on a contingency basis, taking a percentage of the settlement or award if you win.
  • Retainer: Some clients pay a retainer fee upfront to secure ongoing legal services. The lawyer then bills against this retainer as work is done.

The exact structure should be discussed in the initial consultation to ensure you understand how and when you'll be charged.

How Much Does a Litigation Lawyer Cost?

The cost of a litigation lawyer varies significantly depending on the nature of the dispute and the lawyer’s experience. Factors affecting the cost include:

  • The complexity of the case: More complex litigation involving extensive discovery, expert witnesses, or multi-party suits typically costs more.
  • Time spent: Litigation cases can be time-consuming, especially if they go to trial. The longer the case, the higher the legal fees.
  • Type of fee arrangement: Hourly rates can range from $200 to over $1,000 per hour, depending on the lawyer’s reputation and location. Contingency fees generally range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or award.
  • Stage of litigation: Cases that settle early in the process are often less expensive than those that proceed to trial or appeal.

It’s crucial to ask about cost estimates during your initial consultation to avoid surprises.

Top Questions to Ask a Litigation Lawyer

Before hiring a litigation lawyer, it's essential to ask key questions to ensure you're choosing the right representation:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Ensure that the lawyer has experience handling your specific type of dispute, whether it's a contract issue, personal injury, or business matter.
  2. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case's strengths, weaknesses, and the likelihood of success.
  3. What is your fee structure?
Clarify how you'll be charged, whether by the hour, a flat fee, or on a contingency basis.
  4. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it's hard to predict, an experienced lawyer can give you a rough estimate based on similar cases.
  5. How often do you settle cases versus going to trial?
Some lawyers are more inclined to settle, while others may be more experienced in the courtroom. It’s important to understand their strategy.
  6. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Some lawyers prefer aggressive litigation, while others focus on settlement or mediation. Choose one whose approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of a Litigation Lawyer

To verify a litigation lawyer’s credibility, consider the following steps:

  • Check bar association records: Ensure the lawyer is in good standing with the state bar and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and track record.
  • Look for litigation experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they have handled cases like yours and have a record of success.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer to provide references from past clients who can speak to their effectiveness and approach.
  • Research their trial experience: If your case is likely to go to trial, ensure the lawyer has a history of courtroom success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make your first consultation with a litigation lawyer productive, you should prepare the following:

  • A clear outline of the dispute: Provide a timeline and key details about the legal issue you're facing.
  • Any relevant documents: Bring contracts, emails, letters, or any other documentation that pertains to the case.
  • A list of key players: Provide the names of individuals or companies involved in the dispute.
  • Questions about fees and the litigation process: Make sure you understand how the lawyer plans to approach your case and how you will be charged.
  • Your goals and expectations: Be clear about what outcome you're hoping for, whether it's a settlement, compensation, or another resolution.

By coming prepared, you can ensure that your initial meeting with the lawyer is both efficient and insightful, giving you a better sense of how to proceed with your case.
