I lead an organization that provides membership, economic development, and tourism services. Our employee handbook was the original handbook adopted when our organization was formed. We needed a comprehensive review of our handbook and an update to reflect best practices. I engaged Debbie Rosenthal to do a complete review of our existing manual and to recommend changes to reflect changes in the law, best practices and my organization's culture. Debbie did a first-rate professional job in updating the employee manual. I found Debbie easy to work with, a good listener, and highly professional. I recommend Debbie Rosenthal for any organization looking for help in this area.

This attorney was overbearing and obnoxious from day one. She did not care to hear any opinions from me and acted like I was taking up her precious time. Extremely unprofessional. It is obvious she felt that she was NEVER WRONG. Unfortunately, my insurance company contracted this firm, Gebhardt & Kiefer, and I could not use someone else, but I at least insisted a different attorney be given my case. I would never use this attorney voluntarily.

Edelstein was my lawyer on a civil rights suit involving inequitable wages. He entered court papers late, handed my case off to lower level associates who were not long at the firm, and dragged out my case over 25 years! He was reprimanded by a State Supreme Court judge for handing in papers late and jeopardizing my case. The case was never brought to trial - I dropped it when I retired from the university. Right up until the case was dropped, Edelstein assured me of the merits of the case and the certainty of a favorable disposition. He was terrible! I should have filed an ethics complaint against him and may yet inquire if it's not too late.

Mr. Light represented me in a fairly complex and contentious post judgment matter. He was able to succeed at trial and was always very available for the many questions I had. He also tried to resolve the matter fairly before trial in order to save both parties money even though my ex refused. I would highly recommend him.

This attorney represented my family and I in a continuing ex spouse custodial dispute. There was a complete and total breakdown of communication. No stars. Russell Anderson accepted my case and promptly took my payment agreeing to evict my tenant and guaranteeing to get back for me all monies due me including his legal fees, and security the tenant borrowed to pay her October 2015 rent (she promised to pay it back in a few mos and then refused) . The tenant also accumulated a number of late fees. Mr Anderson never met with my tenant and despite a string of emails in which he promised to evict her including one as recently as March 2015 in which he promised to set up a new court date and keep me apprised he just seemingly abandoned my case without telling me and did not answer any of my calls or emails. The tenant then skipped on me leaving behind a trashed apartment (condo). Mr Anderson has never explained either his inactions or reasons for abandoning my case. In my opinion he has demonstrated a complete lack of professionalism and integrity.

I have had the distinct pleasure of calling Russ my colleague for over 5 years now and can say with full confidence that he is one of the finest attorneys I have ever met. Russ is a pragmatic litigator who always keeps the end game in sight. He is an aggressive advocate, when necessary, but more importantly is a master of the art of legal strategy. His bedside manner with clients is unparalleled. He explains the finest of legal intricacies in a way that any layperson can understand. I have referred many a client to Russ and they all report that he is always available to answer their questions and returns calls promptly.

Alain helped me at a time when everything was crashing down. I had two driving while suspended charges, I was facing jail time and high fines. He is ex public prosecutor in North Bergen where I was due in court so I figured he would be the best lawyer that knows the system and how to get my penalties reduced. He was very responsive, let me know what to do and when to do it and kept me informed at all times. I ended up paying less than half of the penalties, faced no jail time and saved my license from being suspended. I am truly grateful for this man has done. Thanks!!

Bill Waldman was the attorney that handled a closing for Lakeland bank whom held an SBA loan I had. After closing the deal in December 2020 and wanting to pay off the balance in the first 6 months I sent 3 requests starting in June of 2021 requesting a pay off balance after I had paid down a large amount of the loan. It was not until OCTOBER that he finally got back to me and Fedex me out a demand letter saying I owed almost twice the amount money and I needed to satisfy the loan in 10 days. In addition, he continued to add interest on the loan which I had planned to pay off in full back in June. After a bit of back and forth I had to do his job and correct him on his $70K error because he was asking ME to show him where he had dropped the ball. Makes you a little nervous that these banks have lawyers that represent them and they make such huge errors. I guess this is what you get from K&L Gates LLP.

I want all the information and I want it as soon as it’s available, and patience is not one of my virtues. Albert did an excellent job balancing my need for information with his ability to resolve issues with the other attorney without having to involve me. He was very professional and friendly at the same time. I would highly recommend him to anyone needing a real estate attorney and won’t hesitate to use him again if the need arises. P. Chasco

I'm not sure what the people from the other reviews from three years ago went through but that was definitely not my experience. David was always available to answer my calls and if he wasn't I always got a return phone call within the same day. Although I didn't get everything I asked for I am smart enough to realize that a lawyer is not a magician especially in family court. David was up front about the fact that we may not be successful and fought hard for me. His associate Ioanna prepared the motions and was always available to answer questions and was really wonderful and pleasant to deal with.

Steven Keppler was dishonest and not reliable. Steven Keppler in my opinion was not able to manage my case. He was also dishonest when his firm had an action brought against them during our case. The opposing attorney filed a motion to disqualify Marks & Klein from the case and Steven didn't even notify me about the motion. I was in an accident in summer 2015 and received a careless driving ticket. I received mail from Simon Law Group at the time and decided to spend over $500 for a lawyer from them---I thought this would ensure that my case would end in a way where I could at least avoid points even if I had to pay a fine. I was going to school in Virginia by fall time and could not appear in court, so I communicated with this lawyer and his associates via phone and email. I didn't feel that he was very informative nor did he put too much effort into my case. I was then asked to plead guilty, pay the fine, and on top of that I received points. I could have pleaded guilty, paid a fine, and received points WITHOUT paying over $500 for the lawyer. All in all, I was very unhappy with this experience and would not recommend this attorney to anyone dealing with driving issues.

He was forthcoming with info. on statues, precedents & rattled off laws by heart which put me at ease but more importantly was willing to share this info which helped market him & gained my confidence in retaining him! Most attorneys don't offer any info. just make empty promises & tell you how many years they've been in the business..(yawn) Finally, Steven is also a people person, was easy to talk to him & has a sense of humor which helped lighten things ~ He will exceed your expectations.

Seth Broder was hired to provide legal service for me as power of attorney for the sale of my sister’s home in NJ. I chose Seth for two reasons. The first was that my sister used Shari of the firm for some estate legal services. The second was I checked on the internet what was a typical fee for attorney service for a home sale in NJ and found it to be $1500 to $2000. When I asked Seth what his fee would be he stated on the phone call “about $1500” as the” buyer attorney has more heavy lifting” As it turned out the sale was elongated due to the buyer having some difficulty securing financing. However, the fee ended up being over $5000. That is more than triple the original estimate. When asked to reduce the fee or even acknowledge the original estimate Seth refused. The fee agreement was based on hourly rates not a fixed fee. The services provided were professional and high quality but I felt I was taken advantage of in the high price required to be paid.

Title says it all. Stephen is an overpriced mediocre lawyer at best, who manages to disappear immediately the day after trial. Any post-trial assistance or guidance does not come with his inflated services. He did not at all guide me on the steps to follow after a DUI, resulting in my serving the punishment I had received three times over before I was able to drive again. Despite his claims, he was non-responsive after the trial, and was FAR more expensive than those I met in similar circumstances. You're quite literally better off doing nothing than burning your money for this man.

Strauss seemingly delights in heaping scorn and abuse on victims of domestic violence and engages in long-winded, hateful, and demeaning gaslighting over people she assumes are less intelligent with a unique emphasis on projection — accusing a traumatized individual of “not listening” while utterly failing to listen and practice compassion and intelligent discernment so consistently as to leave one sick to the stomach. And she does it for pay, not caring that an individual who is willing to give her money might be in real danger. Disgraceful & shameful barely touch the depth of her callous ineptitude and cruelty. Beware.

I thought this might be the answer to my problem. A Sandy contractor bailed half way through the project and kept insurance money of thirty thousand dollars. I should have never selected a corporate lawyer. I spend over five thousand dollars on two meetings and reading 10 emails, and they delivered nothing after a month, claiming they needed more time. In over a month, they failed to inform me that the contractor was already broke and had other lawsuits against him. I found this out for free on line. I don't know what I paid five thousand dollars for, I had to get another lawyer to handle by special court lawsuit negotiations and answer the contractor's small counterclaim. Big mistake.

The attorney did not protect my estate property. They stole funds from the Estate accounts. They failed to protect my family assests. Hired unqualified contractors and never consulted with me about the matter. Signed insurance documents without my approval and wasted the insurance funds when they were suppose to be set aside in a savings account. I received my files and consulted with another attorney about the files, to another who was able to uncover alot of things that were done illegally. They have violated specific ethical rules and not trustworthy. They were reported to the State Attorney General's office for invesitgation and I was advised how to proceed regarding this matter. Think very careful before you decide who is going to handle your legal affairs. Which can mean the difference between a major court verdict and a paltry settlement. The right attorney should be adaptable, likeable, good at communicating, legally knowledgeable, and experienced. Base your decisions on these choices and you should be able the right attorney. This review is to help other consumers to make a good decision because there is a lot riding on your decision who is going to be your attorney.

What a Litigation Lawyer Can Do for You

A litigation lawyer specializes in representing individuals, businesses, or organizations involved in legal disputes. Whether you're the one filing a lawsuit or you're being sued, a litigation attorney will advocate on your behalf throughout the entire legal process. Their goal is to resolve disputes, either through negotiation, settlement, or trial. Litigation lawyers can help with a wide range of disputes, including contract disagreements, real estate issues, employment disputes, personal injury claims, and more.

Litigation lawyers provide strategic legal advice and manage all aspects of your case, from filing motions to representing you in court, ensuring that your rights are protected and that you have the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome.

When Should I Hire a Litigation Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a litigation lawyer if you're involved in a legal dispute that you cannot resolve on your own. Common situations include:

  • Breach of contract disputes: If a party to a contract fails to fulfill their obligations, a litigation lawyer can help you seek damages or enforce the agreement.
  • Business disputes: Litigation lawyers can represent you in cases of partnership disagreements, intellectual property disputes, or business fraud.
  • Employment disputes: If you're facing issues like wrongful termination, workplace discrimination, or wage disputes, a litigation lawyer can help resolve these matters through negotiation or court action.
  • Personal injury claims: If you've been injured due to someone else's negligence and are seeking compensation, a litigation attorney can help you pursue your case.
  • Real estate or property disputes: When there are conflicts over property ownership, boundary issues, or lease agreements, a litigation lawyer can assist in resolving the dispute.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process is beneficial, especially if a lawsuit seems imminent or you have already been served with legal documents.

What Does a Litigation Lawyer Do?

A litigation lawyer handles all aspects of your case, from the initial investigation to the trial and even the appeals process, if necessary. Their role includes:

  • Case assessment and investigation: Analyzing the facts of your case and advising whether it’s worth pursuing or defending.
  • Pleadings and motions: Drafting and filing documents to initiate or respond to a lawsuit, including complaints, motions to dismiss, and answers.
  • Discovery: Gathering evidence, including depositions, interrogatories, and document requests, to build your case.
  • Negotiations and settlement discussions: Attempting to resolve disputes through mediation, arbitration, or settlement talks before going to trial.
  • Trial representation: Presenting your case in court, examining witnesses, introducing evidence, and making legal arguments before a judge or jury.
  • Appeals: If necessary, filing appeals to challenge or defend the outcome of the trial.

Litigation lawyers are also skilled negotiators and often work to resolve disputes outside of court to save time, money, and stress for their clients.

How Are Litigation Lawyers Paid?

Litigation lawyers typically use a variety of fee structures depending on the type of case, the complexity of the legal matter, and the financial circumstances of the client. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Many litigation attorneys charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and geographic location.
  • Flat fees: For specific, predictable legal tasks (such as filing a motion), lawyers may offer a flat fee.
  • Contingency fees: In personal injury or other cases where you seek damages, a lawyer may work on a contingency basis, taking a percentage of the settlement or award if you win.
  • Retainer: Some clients pay a retainer fee upfront to secure ongoing legal services. The lawyer then bills against this retainer as work is done.

The exact structure should be discussed in the initial consultation to ensure you understand how and when you'll be charged.

How Much Does a Litigation Lawyer Cost?

The cost of a litigation lawyer varies significantly depending on the nature of the dispute and the lawyer’s experience. Factors affecting the cost include:

  • The complexity of the case: More complex litigation involving extensive discovery, expert witnesses, or multi-party suits typically costs more.
  • Time spent: Litigation cases can be time-consuming, especially if they go to trial. The longer the case, the higher the legal fees.
  • Type of fee arrangement: Hourly rates can range from $200 to over $1,000 per hour, depending on the lawyer’s reputation and location. Contingency fees generally range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or award.
  • Stage of litigation: Cases that settle early in the process are often less expensive than those that proceed to trial or appeal.

It’s crucial to ask about cost estimates during your initial consultation to avoid surprises.

Top Questions to Ask a Litigation Lawyer

Before hiring a litigation lawyer, it's essential to ask key questions to ensure you're choosing the right representation:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Ensure that the lawyer has experience handling your specific type of dispute, whether it's a contract issue, personal injury, or business matter.
  2. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case's strengths, weaknesses, and the likelihood of success.
  3. What is your fee structure?
Clarify how you'll be charged, whether by the hour, a flat fee, or on a contingency basis.
  4. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it's hard to predict, an experienced lawyer can give you a rough estimate based on similar cases.
  5. How often do you settle cases versus going to trial?
Some lawyers are more inclined to settle, while others may be more experienced in the courtroom. It’s important to understand their strategy.
  6. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Some lawyers prefer aggressive litigation, while others focus on settlement or mediation. Choose one whose approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of a Litigation Lawyer

To verify a litigation lawyer’s credibility, consider the following steps:

  • Check bar association records: Ensure the lawyer is in good standing with the state bar and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and track record.
  • Look for litigation experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they have handled cases like yours and have a record of success.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer to provide references from past clients who can speak to their effectiveness and approach.
  • Research their trial experience: If your case is likely to go to trial, ensure the lawyer has a history of courtroom success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make your first consultation with a litigation lawyer productive, you should prepare the following:

  • A clear outline of the dispute: Provide a timeline and key details about the legal issue you're facing.
  • Any relevant documents: Bring contracts, emails, letters, or any other documentation that pertains to the case.
  • A list of key players: Provide the names of individuals or companies involved in the dispute.
  • Questions about fees and the litigation process: Make sure you understand how the lawyer plans to approach your case and how you will be charged.
  • Your goals and expectations: Be clear about what outcome you're hoping for, whether it's a settlement, compensation, or another resolution.

By coming prepared, you can ensure that your initial meeting with the lawyer is both efficient and insightful, giving you a better sense of how to proceed with your case.
