Mr. Sharp worked with us and quickly filed the paperwork to get my husband and I custody of a young relative. He was communicative and helped us with any concerns. He explained the process in a way that we felt like we understood what our options were and could make the best decisions. I would hire him again but hope I won't have to.

Mr. Matthew Sharp has been fired. He took money for both his personal fee and filing fee to take someone to court, but he never did. He was hired for about two years to do this simple job instead all he did was file with the court after a year when he was about to be dismissed and assume his resignation for not doing his job and not communicating for months at a time...he pocked the serv papers money and never served the papers...I gave him several more months to give him a chance...but he showed me he was just pulling my leg. So he has been fired and stole my funds. He also never gave me my file or showed what work he performed.

I hired Mr. Phillips for several issues. The first was a firearm related issue. His opinion was that I would have no problems purchasing firearms after being falsely accused by a woman that had accused 4 men of stalking her before me. I placed an order for several expensive arms and after a 2 year wait was denied. After this (but before having the firearm issue) I hired him for a divorce. I had to do a lot of the leg work, finding documents, and coming up with basic ideas of how to proceed in the case. This is what he was paid for, I shouldn’t have to do that. Next is the most serious case. I’m a medical doctor and was falsely accused and defamed. I paid Mr. Phillips thousands of dollars months and months ago. At the time he agreed to take my case and my money. When the time came to go to court he wanted to bail out. I literally had to convince him while in court to proceed, he gave several excuses trying to get out of it. We ended up winning the first part of that case. However soon after Mr. Phillips informed me he had a new client, a Hemp shop, and no longer had time to help me with my case even though he was paid for it. Can you imagine being told your attorney no longer has time for you because they have a new client? This was very bizarre because we won a million dollar verdict. Who would try to get out of a case like that? During the second defamation court proceeding I found out that Mr. Phillips neglected to confirm that the defendant was properly served. The million dollar verdict was dismissed in TN. A waste of thousands of dollars and many many months of stress and worry. Also for 3 months I sent emails, texts, and phone calls to publish our first defamation case win to repair my reputation as a medical doctor. He said he was too busy. Yes he actually said he was too busy to send Johnson City Press an email to repair my reputation. He said after October 1 I would have to find a new lawyer, again very bizarre. He then said after Oct 1 he would publish the win in the newspaper after I kept asking over and over and over... yeah that’s not a typo. I would need a new lawyer after Oct 1 but he would publish the results of the trial after Oct 1? No, he knew he screwed up my case and there would be no case after Oct 1 to publish. He either lied or misinformed me about documents that other attorneys were requesting which would have made a very big difference in the outcome of my case. In addition to all this I would send him detailed emails regarding our various cases, I do not believe he ever read anything or just disregarded it. This is not a guy you can trust. -Dan Nicolau, MD

I’d like to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to Stacy Turner and Sherry Plunkett for the FANTASTIC representation in my custody matter. I couldn’t have asked for a more fierce yet compassionate and understanding legal team. I’m so glad I found you all and have been singing your praises to anyone who will listen for quite a while now. Hopefully I don't have need for an attorney again in the future but if I do, I will most certainly be calling Stacy Turner once again.

I had a simple case of a pissed of soon to be ex-wife and ended up with a bogus charge. I paid Stacy to defend me. All she did was tell me to take what she could get. I wanted to go to court and she advised me otherwise. Since then my life has been an uphill battle with regards to my custody of my daughter. My ex made claims that were so far fetched and all Stacy saw was dollar signs. I was moving out of state and I told my ex that I was going to seek full custody. I had never been in trouble in my life. I called Stacy to try and get my record cleared and she would not talk to me. She had her staff person laugh and tell me I am lucky not have been a cellmate. Useless! Just another example of a Clarksville TN attorney.

Our son was going through a custody case that spanned two states. Our lawyer in my sons resident state located Mart for us. We spoke over the phone, discussed our case, and hired Mart on the spot. Why would we hire someone based solely on a phone conversation? While on the phone, Mart immediately reviewed the documents sent to him, quickly gathered critical information from us, explained how the legal processes in the two states are different, laid out the potential challenges, and explained how he would help us. Based on this conversation it was clear that he was completely competent, knowledgeable and ethical. When we met, he took the time necessary to fully understand our case and our concerns. He answered all our questions and prepared us for what was yet to come. It was clear Mart was in control and knew exactly how to proceed. Mart is a highly experienced, knowledgeable, mature lawyer who combines strategy with knowledge and ethics to represent his clients.

I had a court appointed laywer. He failed to file the writ of certiorari which stopped the appeal. The Tennessee Court of Appeals contacted the lawyer, they found problems in my transctript. It was only 43 years later that I found this out.The state had no proof,no weapon,no money, and no witness's.The Tennessee Appeals set aside my verdict and reinstated it to give the lawyer more time to file the writ of certiorari. If he had done so my sentence would probably have been over turned and I would have been freed. He still never filed and the court agreed that I had ineffective assistance of counsel. I am only asking to have this expunged from my record.I served the time all those years ago. You are that Lawyer. The Tennessee board of parole will not help unless you will send me a letter stating why you did not file the writ of cert. I spent four and a half years in prison for a crime I did not do. And 48 years later I am still being punished. I just want my record cleared. The Tennessee court of appeals set aside my conviction so you would have more time to file. They said in their judgement that they contacted you, But you still never filed. Please you can help and make a big different in my life Thank you in advance for your time and trouble. BILLY

CANNOT recommend Beth Brooks for attorney. Did not review facts of case and, as it appeared, apathy would be this attorney's bailiwick, as she took her check, grinned and then socialized with the plaintiff. Add lack of integrity to her conduct. Hired another lawyer that actually exemplified ethics, integrity and attention to the facts, and all was well afterward. Repeat, cannot recommend Beth Brooks for attorney. Reviews are not in her favor.

I would stay far, far away from this office. My wife and I retained Kline and had a horrendous experience. I would describe him as incompetent, uncommunicative, and dishonest. Without going into painstaking detail of all our grievances, I will say that it was next to impossible to receive any meaningful work or communication from Kline and the office. We actually missed a response deadline with the court in our case because of a supposed “lost email”. We initially paid a retainer to Kline and were told, in writing, that we would be notified when our retainer was exhausted so that we could discuss how to proceed. Instead, we suddenly received an invoice for thousands of dollars, informing us that our retainer had been used up for weeks. When I pointed out the clause in our agreement regarding our retainer, Kline abruptly responded that we should seek new counsel. I would strongly discourage anyone from retaining the services of this office

Judge olita failed to be fair and impartial. She held the one side accountable for a violation of an order. How ever very shortly after the other party had been in contempt many times and she through it all out with out taking the evidence in to account. I believe this judge is done being on the bench and needs and thorough examination on values in the judiciary system.

In 20220 my divorce was finalized. Because of Katherine Olita my ex-wife was granted full custody. I had proof of my ex's then-husband hospitalizing my children multiple times, evidence of my ex drinking and using drugs in front of my children, and my ex-wife leaving the infant children home alone to go sleep with other men. She knew my ex-wife because at the time she was employed at Montgomery County Sheriffs' office. Because of this, she would not allow me to speak, only my ex-wife. My ex-wife alleged, with absolutely no evidence, that I killed a dog, and Olita wrote "The court finds this detrimental to the children" again with absolutely no evidence. Because Olita granted my ex-wife full custody, my children had to witness her trying to kill her husband with their baseball bat. The witnessed their mom go to jail. They have also been moved around four times with their mom and are now currently moving again. Katherine Olita acts as if she cares so much about family law, and adoptions but she has absolutely no problem ripping families apart and permanently causing trauma to small children, just to benefit a friend. The best part of all this is that my ex-wife tried to get an order of protection against me to prevent me from seeing my daughter prior to deployment. Judge Olita would have been the judge but as soon as she saw all the charges my ex-wife had (assault, and custodial interference) she recused herself because she realized she made a bad choice and did not want her name on it.

He never followed through with anything, would not return calls, he is rude, he will talk down to you, he is just not a nice person to work with. hindsight is 2020, I should have read his reviews instead of listening to "His Friend" I seriously handed him $4100 and walked away with absolutely nothing. I used Ms. Evans for my divorce, because one of my friends used her (for an uncontested divorce) and said it was quick and easy. My divorce was contested, and I was prepared to be in it for the long haul. However, i wasn't prepared for the astronomical fees charged by Ms. Evans, and how she ate up nearly $10k in a year and got ZERO results. By the time my divorce went to trial, I could no longer afford her services. After I dropped her, she somehow worked the books to reflect that I owed $2000 more dollars, and she didn't do anything. There was no mediation, and all the money was eaten up by her paralegals constantly calling me and filling out arbitrary paperwork for me, OVER AND OVER. None of it was necessary or mattered in the divorce. None of it was requested by the judge. Once I dropped her as my attorney, she went back and canceled all my court dates, and when I complained, she had them reset, and then CHARGED ME AGAIN. Do not go here unless you're prepared to pay. She is vicious, and will fight, but she will also fight you for your arm, leg, and first born child to pay her fees, and she'll make sure to double charge and pad the bill.

I hired Mr. Wilson in a family court case that came up unexpected after reading a few positive online reviews. That's why I am writing this so no one will have the same problems. In consultation he spoke of how he believed it would go and quoted a price that would retain plenty of hours allow him to have time to accomplish it as lawyers do. I gladly paid in full thankful for all the work he spoke of to provide the best he could. Preliminary day came and he was gathering the right information in notes to accomplish his agenda. After speaking with me the court granted a no contact order on my behalf until we returned to court. The weeks between that day and court it was violated multiple times with malicious intent. The courts instructed that I contact my lawyer about the violation. I left multiple voicemails, text& emails to no avail for 3 weeks. Three days before court he responds through message to confirm court. Mr. Wilson had left directly after preliminary for 3 weeks vacation completely unreachable until court. I had paid quite a handsome retainer gladly because I needed his time and services. I was left with no counsel when the order was violated repeatedly. When I asked him for an itinerary as to what he had prepared Mr. Wilson had not pursued anything in preparation in the least. Everyone deserves uninterrupted vacation. I just feel strongly he should have been forthcoming about his schedule, not accepted a pricey retainer for his time that would be spent completely vacationing. If he had I could have obtained other counsel that could have prepared work on my case with the many hours I retained from him instead of vacationing on them only to show for thirty minute court session with only "playing it by ear" as his agenda in a life altering case for me. This is a caution for anyone who has a case that needs counsel you can trust to do the footwork only lawyers can do in the legal system to accomplish your needs. Especially if the lack of diligence could yield results that not only fail the client but their loved ones also.

This is a relatively new lawyer who thinks he knows everything situation. He has a lot to learn and has very little experience. He is older and new so that is misleading. When you look at him you would think he is seasoned but he is not. Just look up his info on the board website. At times you will find him pleasant and a bit organized but that falls apart quickly. He is also very goofy not in a good way. He is the timid type and doesn’t appear to feel comfortable rolling up his sleeves and fighting for his clients. He also likes to gossip which I found to be quite the turn off. He bad mouths other attorneys while at the same time trying to “work” with them. I guess it’s because he is from a very small town. He did nothing for me but cause more problems. In my humble opinion I would run to another attorneys office as fast as I could. I think this lawyer would do better as a corporate type attorney that just does paperwork and has little client contact. I mean everyone can do something so I won’t say he is the absolute worst but I certainly would never hire him again. I know a lot more of what to look for in an attorney now.

I hired Ms. O'Brien for a very simple task. It wound up involving only a few phone calls and emails to another attorney, probably totalling under 2 hours. I provided all the documentation to be conveyed to Hughes & Coleman, the plaintiff's lawyers. They had refused to answer calls from my business manager, likely because she wasn't a lawyer. Besides charging me 20 minutes to read or send each email, she added in $250 for an hour of "research." I know this is standard practice for the legal profession, but that doesn't make it right. When questioned, she claimed clients want their lawyers to be knowledgeable. Well, of course they do, but shouldn't that knowledge be acquired in school and through experience? It's not right to make the client pay for their OJT (On the Job Training). As a piano teacher, if I don't know something, I don't stop the lesson and go look it up while the child sits there. I'm expected to have the skills to perform my job. At the very least, she could have had her $90/hour paralegal do the research. I'm not happy with the $800 bill and won't use her again.

This is such a great service. When you find yourself in a situation where an attorney is needed, it is very overwhelming. I called around Knoxville for two days trying to find the right attorney that could help me. I contacted the Knoxville Bar Association and within a few hours I received an attorney referral. It was that easy! When I contacted my referred attorney, I panicked when I found out it would be a couple of weeks before we could meet due to scheduling conflicts. I contacted Tracy Chain at the Knoxville Bar Association. She is amazing! She understood my panic and assured me the referred attorney was the best attorney for my situation. She was very helpful and offered a few other suggestions to help. After speaking with my referred attorney, I couldn’t be more pleased with the referral. He truly was the best attorney to fit my situation. He was patient, kind and very knowledgeable of the law regarding my issue. I felt like he really understood me and my unique situation. Most notably, I found him to be extremely honest. He explained everything in great detail so I had a better understanding of my options. I couldn’t have found a more perfect fit.

What a Litigation Lawyer Can Do for You

A litigation lawyer specializes in representing individuals, businesses, or organizations involved in legal disputes. Whether you're the one filing a lawsuit or you're being sued, a litigation attorney will advocate on your behalf throughout the entire legal process. Their goal is to resolve disputes, either through negotiation, settlement, or trial. Litigation lawyers can help with a wide range of disputes, including contract disagreements, real estate issues, employment disputes, personal injury claims, and more.

Litigation lawyers provide strategic legal advice and manage all aspects of your case, from filing motions to representing you in court, ensuring that your rights are protected and that you have the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome.

When Should I Hire a Litigation Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a litigation lawyer if you're involved in a legal dispute that you cannot resolve on your own. Common situations include:

  • Breach of contract disputes: If a party to a contract fails to fulfill their obligations, a litigation lawyer can help you seek damages or enforce the agreement.
  • Business disputes: Litigation lawyers can represent you in cases of partnership disagreements, intellectual property disputes, or business fraud.
  • Employment disputes: If you're facing issues like wrongful termination, workplace discrimination, or wage disputes, a litigation lawyer can help resolve these matters through negotiation or court action.
  • Personal injury claims: If you've been injured due to someone else's negligence and are seeking compensation, a litigation attorney can help you pursue your case.
  • Real estate or property disputes: When there are conflicts over property ownership, boundary issues, or lease agreements, a litigation lawyer can assist in resolving the dispute.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process is beneficial, especially if a lawsuit seems imminent or you have already been served with legal documents.

What Does a Litigation Lawyer Do?

A litigation lawyer handles all aspects of your case, from the initial investigation to the trial and even the appeals process, if necessary. Their role includes:

  • Case assessment and investigation: Analyzing the facts of your case and advising whether it’s worth pursuing or defending.
  • Pleadings and motions: Drafting and filing documents to initiate or respond to a lawsuit, including complaints, motions to dismiss, and answers.
  • Discovery: Gathering evidence, including depositions, interrogatories, and document requests, to build your case.
  • Negotiations and settlement discussions: Attempting to resolve disputes through mediation, arbitration, or settlement talks before going to trial.
  • Trial representation: Presenting your case in court, examining witnesses, introducing evidence, and making legal arguments before a judge or jury.
  • Appeals: If necessary, filing appeals to challenge or defend the outcome of the trial.

Litigation lawyers are also skilled negotiators and often work to resolve disputes outside of court to save time, money, and stress for their clients.

How Are Litigation Lawyers Paid?

Litigation lawyers typically use a variety of fee structures depending on the type of case, the complexity of the legal matter, and the financial circumstances of the client. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Many litigation attorneys charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and geographic location.
  • Flat fees: For specific, predictable legal tasks (such as filing a motion), lawyers may offer a flat fee.
  • Contingency fees: In personal injury or other cases where you seek damages, a lawyer may work on a contingency basis, taking a percentage of the settlement or award if you win.
  • Retainer: Some clients pay a retainer fee upfront to secure ongoing legal services. The lawyer then bills against this retainer as work is done.

The exact structure should be discussed in the initial consultation to ensure you understand how and when you'll be charged.

How Much Does a Litigation Lawyer Cost?

The cost of a litigation lawyer varies significantly depending on the nature of the dispute and the lawyer’s experience. Factors affecting the cost include:

  • The complexity of the case: More complex litigation involving extensive discovery, expert witnesses, or multi-party suits typically costs more.
  • Time spent: Litigation cases can be time-consuming, especially if they go to trial. The longer the case, the higher the legal fees.
  • Type of fee arrangement: Hourly rates can range from $200 to over $1,000 per hour, depending on the lawyer’s reputation and location. Contingency fees generally range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or award.
  • Stage of litigation: Cases that settle early in the process are often less expensive than those that proceed to trial or appeal.

It’s crucial to ask about cost estimates during your initial consultation to avoid surprises.

Top Questions to Ask a Litigation Lawyer

Before hiring a litigation lawyer, it's essential to ask key questions to ensure you're choosing the right representation:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Ensure that the lawyer has experience handling your specific type of dispute, whether it's a contract issue, personal injury, or business matter.
  2. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case's strengths, weaknesses, and the likelihood of success.
  3. What is your fee structure?
Clarify how you'll be charged, whether by the hour, a flat fee, or on a contingency basis.
  4. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it's hard to predict, an experienced lawyer can give you a rough estimate based on similar cases.
  5. How often do you settle cases versus going to trial?
Some lawyers are more inclined to settle, while others may be more experienced in the courtroom. It’s important to understand their strategy.
  6. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Some lawyers prefer aggressive litigation, while others focus on settlement or mediation. Choose one whose approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of a Litigation Lawyer

To verify a litigation lawyer’s credibility, consider the following steps:

  • Check bar association records: Ensure the lawyer is in good standing with the state bar and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and track record.
  • Look for litigation experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they have handled cases like yours and have a record of success.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer to provide references from past clients who can speak to their effectiveness and approach.
  • Research their trial experience: If your case is likely to go to trial, ensure the lawyer has a history of courtroom success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make your first consultation with a litigation lawyer productive, you should prepare the following:

  • A clear outline of the dispute: Provide a timeline and key details about the legal issue you're facing.
  • Any relevant documents: Bring contracts, emails, letters, or any other documentation that pertains to the case.
  • A list of key players: Provide the names of individuals or companies involved in the dispute.
  • Questions about fees and the litigation process: Make sure you understand how the lawyer plans to approach your case and how you will be charged.
  • Your goals and expectations: Be clear about what outcome you're hoping for, whether it's a settlement, compensation, or another resolution.

By coming prepared, you can ensure that your initial meeting with the lawyer is both efficient and insightful, giving you a better sense of how to proceed with your case.
