We do not recommend Dave Porter as we feel there was insufficient transparency between his fee and hours worked and most of all we left the engagement with little valuable legal advice. We engaged Dave Porter for advice about Proposition 19 property tax issues. Though his website lists him primarily as a tax attorney focused on litigation, he assured me that he could advise on Prop 19's impact to our estate taxes. We submitted a retainer, a copy of our trust and scheduled a call. He was courteous but tended to wander, and at $500 an hour, this is an issue. We ended the 50 minute call with a recommendation by him. We researched alternative legal sources and found the recommendation was debatable so we opted not to proceed. We were ultimately billed for $1000 for our 50 minute call and the hour it took him to read our trust (which is boiler plate). However, after billing an hour to read the trust he could not answer a basic question about its portability, and for that he charged us $500. We asked him to reconsider his 2 hour fee as it seemed excessive relative to the advice delivered. He declined and discontinued communications. It is unprofessional to not respond or to discuss disagreement on quality of service provided. It is unfortunate that Dave chose this short sighted approach to doing business as he has eliminated any future opportunities and referrals from us.

The team at Jewell, Stewart and Pratt made our transition from Czech Republic to California go remarkably well. A large amount of paperwork, all very clear and thorough and timing was exactly what they told us and better. Claire, Monique and Mable made a great combo and we highly recommend hiring them when you are looking for results beyond the basics, special requests and international managing of affairs across borders, oceans and mountains of red tape. In 1st moments we thought to do it on our own. Then, realized there were some surprises along the way and that our team got results we were not able to get on our own and we didn’t want any mistakes during an already stressful period of change. This was the best investment in our future we made, by far. No regrets. No surprises. Professional and straight forward. Exactly what you need when moving yourself and family to U.S. Crossing the border with confidence is the best gift you can give yourself.11 minutes at the airport border crossing/special room, amazing. Do yourself a favor and relax into a professional team who knows what’s needed, so you don’t.

Actually he quit because I caught on to his sham. My current lawyer is doing a far better job and told me he incorrectly filed the wrong petitions.

My mother-in-law passed away and left a written will that my greedy brother-in-law challenged. My wife and I hired Endy and his firm because he was highly recommended by another attorney. Endy was successful through mediation in getting my mother-in-laws wishes realized and resolving this challenge out of court. As importantly, Endy was extremely compassionate and supportive of my wife's vulnerable loss of her mom who she was so close to. I would highly recommend this firm for negotiating difficult cases with complicated details. Endy was professional, fair, he did what he said he would do and most importantly, compassionate in an otherwise contentious and difficult situation. Thank you Endy!

After my fathers recent visit with Peter Keon to update his Will/Trust my father reports that Mr. Peter A. Keon treated him very unprofessionally and condescending. My father even scheduled an interpreter for their meeting and Mr. Keon kept insisting that my father should, “speak English” repetitively. Mr. Keon even made and comment to my father “you’re crazy” regarding something he didn’t agree with. The interpreter was passive as she wasn’t equipped to translate correctly or even advocate for my father. My father felt miss represented throughout the entire meeting as Mr. Keons unprofessional demeanor resulted in Mr. Keon walking up out his seat to handle other matters as the translator was interrupting what my father was stating. Mr. Keon’s was not only passive aggressive with certain statements and comments towards my father in the meeting but he was also very discriminating that my farther felt the aggression and had to walk out the meeting. This company has been overall extremely disappointing and unprofessional. My father mentioned that it took several weeks to get this meeting scheduled with this law firm. To get treated this way is truly insensitive toward their clients. Especially ones who pay for their service. We Do Not recommend this company to other and if you’re looking to get involved Stay Away especially if you are a Latino. The company is Not worth your time and especially not your money. My father no longer wants to be represent by this law firm and will take his assets elsewhere.

Horrible lawyer. He lied to me about settling my debt. He told me he could help me with an IRS settlement, but after he received the retainer, he told me there was nothing he could do. Took my money and made a few phone calls. I was robbed, and I still owe the IRS. I'm filling a complaint with the state bar. He will need to prove to the state bar how he spent my retainer. He also does not return email messages. I would hire someone else if I was you.

The IRS falsely tried to levy my wages so I called Ary. He picked up the phone immediately (no receptionist) and carefully listened to my story. Ary, then asked for at power of attorney and contacted the IRS to find out what was going on. He got back to me quickly and told me what the IRS was trying to do and let me know they are 100% wrong and were trying too collect on a tax debt I don't owe. He then went through the proper channels, spoke with the IRS agent and got my levy dismissed after the explained to them the 5 areas of tax law the IRS was blatantly violating! If I didn't have a lawyer on the case I probably would have ended up paying the IRS, but since I hired council I only ended up paying for his time which was well worth it. I would highly recommend Ary Ariazand. He is very responsive, professional and you can even get in touch with him quickly even on weekends! He certainly didn't leave me hanging and fought hard to get my levy resolved.

I went to her free consultation and was blown away by all the information she gave me so I decided to hire her with no doubt that she will do a great job. Unfortunately, that was not the case. I've handed her all the related documents and summarized my case so she can be fully prepared but I was shocked how she came in without reading / learning about my case. I was very nervous at the hearing so I listened to her advice but all she did was to take the easy way out for her, ignoring the best interest in me. It seemed like she didn't wanna put effort in protecting me or fighting for my benefit at all. Probably because she wasn't prepare at all. Even the opponent party said, " You should speak up, that's what you are here for " She came unprepared, her legal knowledge is very limited and she made many mistakes. I was shocked when I read the legal document she created after the court. I needed to point out many of her mistakes. My case included simple calculations and she has an MBA but couldn't get the easiest math correct. I wish I never hired her. I told my friend who's going through her divorce now that I regret hiring her then she happened to know her. She told me that Lucy's response on avvo was so fast, she was thinking of hiring her too but her emails were not responding to the questions she asked so she ended up not hiring her. I checked her profile prior to hiring and felt I was very mislead of the " Rising star " award. I don't know how they give out awards but do NOT be mislead by that because it didn't apply in my case. The receivers is the worst performer in court. She did such a lousy job. I never write reviews but decided to post here to save another me.

Mr. Sorell comes with good references. However, he did not respect my time. He is apparently in quite high demand, which is reflected in the courtesy he shows his presumably minor clients. My relatively minor questions and comments on his contracts received no response. I was left feeling that he was more concerned with getting my check than with providing client service. I am relieved that I learned early in the process. Having worked with both personal and business counsel over 20 years, his approach was not unprecedented - but was certainly indicative of a successful practice without adequate time for minor clients.

I hired Mr. Hogan to help me handle a short sale. Mr. Hogan was friendly and helpful. HOWEVER, after my consultation I was forwarded to his assistants (which I completely understand). The problem was, his assistants seemed completely disinterested in my case. They failed to keep my phone appointments, and I had to re-explain my case EVERY time because they had completely forgotten about me! One assistant was EXTREMELY RUDE (I can't remember her name). It was quite honestly THE WORST MONEY I'VE EVER SPENT. I subsequently fired Mr. Hogan's law firm, and hired another attorney who settled my issue in half the time at a fraction of the cost.

My husband and I hired him a couple years ago to resolve our tax issue (we needed to make installment agreement with IRS) Our case was passed around to several different lawyers in his firm. Zero follow-up! And the installment agreement to this day has never been set up. I’m guessing they have a huge turnover in his office. Not once have we ever received anything that had been promised. He never even spoke to us again after we paid him. Just a couple of weeks ago Cheryl e-mailed us about a notice they received from the IRS. When my husband had a call with them a few days ago and spoke with the gal who answered the phone , she had absolutely NO idea what was going on, she thought it was a bankruptcy. Then a completely different attorney reached out from his office and wants money, again. Please people, do your homework and do NOT waste you money. Take your business elsewhere!

If I can rate it zero stars I would. This is absolutely a clown show of lawyers that just pass on the case from lawyer to lawyer! Nobody seems to have any information of anything. They pressured us to get the money within an hour to have the case worked on immediately. Which stressed my family and me out getting the money! As soon as we got it they comfort us saying they will start, but no lawyer ever contacted us and the day of the court they didn’t even BOTHER TO SHOW UP! Which resulted in the court to be pushed back till next month. Absolutely disappointed, I trusted this firm because I was recommended by one of their own employees! I urge anyone that is looking for a good lawyer and actually do their job DO NOT COME HERE! They will take your money and not give a care about your case !! They prey on financially unstable people to pressure them and take their money! Unfortunately I was a victim of this false advertisement they show case. I urge anyone that is trying to get their loved one out please don’t come here! There is a reason why they have less than two stars on ratings Si puedo calificarlo con cero estrellas, lo haría.

Ms. Leong crafted my parents' trust documents in 2000 as well as amendments and restatements over the next 18 years. Then, in July 2022, due to a financial emergency, Ms. Leong was very responsive and timely in effecting the necessary paperwork to allow for a change in trustee. All was good until it was time to administer the trust following my mom’s passing in February. Two main issues arose during the trust administration. First, according to Probate Section 16061.7, the trustee is required to notify the trust’s beneficiaries within 60 days of the death of a settlor and provide specific details as well as a copy of the trust. Ms. Leong advised that this notification seemed unnecessary, and the notification, meeting the requirements of that code, was the first order of business of the attorney I hired to replace Ms. Leong. Second, Ms. Leong promised to respond to client communications “promptly” and took up to five business days to respond, even with follow-ups from the Client. When challenged, she did not accept responsibility and instead offered insincere apologies. The subsequent attorney I hired not only handled the legally required notification, but he also suggested drafting a waiver of a formal accounting to preserve the trust’s assets from large legal and CPA fees that would be required if a beneficiary insisted on that detailed accounting. Ms. Leong made no such suggestion. My goal was to bring this trust matter full circle, as Ms. Leong had drafted all the documents and knew the history. Unfortunately, in my opinion, this matter did not get the attention that it deserved, thus motivating me to change attorneys and incur additional expense that could and should have been avoided.

Now, while consultation was to assist the students involved, I needed to get their accounts conveyed to him so he could understand the claims being made. I wouldn't recommend this attorney to my worst enemy!! I went to see this horrible attorney in 2009 for a CH.7 bankruptcy. I had a very large property judgement due to my ex wife and asked him if it could go in the bankruptcy. Mr. Gillet assured me me that he was the best attorney for my case and said that he could have the judgment dissolved in the bankruptcy as well. He let me know he was very well known by the Trustee that would review my case, and had nothing to worry about. Mr. Gillet asked me to make an appointment with his paralegal to begin the papers. Before I could proceed with his paralegal I had to pay his retaining fee ( around $2500.00). I paid the fee. My appointment with his paralegal was the following week. His paralegal was 40 mins late to our appointment. Instead of being apologetic for her tardiness, she was completely rude and acted as if her having to meet with me was such a inconvenience for her. As we attempted to fill out the bankruptcy papers she started telling me the complete opposite of what Mr. Gillet had told me 4 days prior. We did not fill out any paperwork and I asked the girls at the front desk to have Mr. Gillet call me asap regarding the meeting I just had with his paralegal. Mr. Gillet never called. I called him every day 2-3 times a day for the next week. There was always an excuse why he couldn't talk, or he was out of the office. I finally went down to his office one morning since I couldn't get a return call. Supposedly he was out of the office and once again the girls said they would have him call me. During that visit, one of the receptionist asked me to give them another copy of the requested documents that I had already turned in. She said they had lost my file!! 3 1/2 weeks later Gillet finally returns my call. He basically let me know that he is a very busy man and didn't have time to return my call. The next couple of weeks continued with this type of behavior. His receptionist continued to lose documents and the filing papers never even got filled out! I finally had a enough with being blown off, and submitting multiple documents due to his secretary's lack of organization. I requested a refund of the $2500 and wanted to find a different attorney. Mr Gillet said I could find another attorney but he would not refund me my money. He acknowledged that besides a consultation no services were rendered to me,but that didn't matter because the contact I signed. Phillip Gillet's only goal is to get you to sign his contract and pay the retainer. After that he could care less. I also learned that Mr Gillet was totally incorrect when he told me the judgement to my ex could go in the BK. In 2005 the law changed and any judgements from family court can not be dissolved in BK. Good to see that Mr. Gillet really knows the laws of bankruptcy!! I highly recommend NOT using this attorney even if he was the last one left to use. I can't wait for the day karma comes back around to this sorry accuse for an attorney,

The other two local Bankruptcy attorneys, wanted me to pay 100% ($2,500.00 per month) of my debt with no interest, after Gillet, reviewed my case we agree with 40% ($1,465.00) with no interest for a five year period. We hired Mr. McElfish to evaluate corporate tax issues. We explained that we were on a rigid timeline in order to make decisions concerning an impending liquidity event. He boasted about how socially connected he is. The work product did not address our specific concerns and the tax conclusions were dubious. A significant retainer was eaten up without explanations. Access to McElfish was also difficult.

I hired Mr. Ogilvie to represent me in a family law case and a Civil lawsuit. Basically I ended up representing myself because Mr. Ogilvie didn't take the time. So much so that he allowed the other sides attorney, Mike Darlington, to file fraudulent documents for his client and Mr. Ogilvie signed off on them, obviously because he either never bothered to read them or didn't care or both. He appeared in court for me only long enough to postpone hearings and trial until we finally settled and never had a trial. The settlement was written by me and a different attorney, not Ogilvie and not the opposing sides attorney, Mike Darlington. Mr. Ogilvie is a nice man but I think overwhelmed and perhaps past his prime. I would love my money back but too much trouble to take the time to pursue at this point. I would never hire him again or recommend him to anyone who actually wants an attorney who cares and will work for them. You will be very disappointed with Mr. Ogilvie.

Mr. Ogilvie did not present any of the evidence that I researched and presented him with. He made no attempt to research any of the evidence on his own eg. wifes earnings. Made no objections did not stand up for me when the judge said she did not believe I couldn't hear. The whole proceding was a kangaroo court in which opposite council presented false "evidence" concerning my income. It goes on and on

I wish I had read the reviews on AVVO before working with him. I concur with the previous review - Overcharges and Underdelivers. Takes advantage of clients. Charges you for Secretarial tasks at attorney rates. Never once stepped foot in the court system for me. Misguided me on case strategy. Could not produce the timesheets he was to use when billing me? Does not represent the practice of law in good faith. Poor example! Horrific experience!

He estimated it would cost a maximum $25K of his time to get a corrupt trustee removed from his position. He ran up a bill of about $50K. He accomplished nothing. We had informed him early in engaging him that our financial resources for pursuing our interests were very limited, yet he didn't even alert us to the fact that he was running up was way exceeding what he had estimated and give us the option of backing out before the bill got too high. Of course no lawyer can guaranty results in an adversarial situation, but he and/or his staff dropped the ball in at least these specific ways. ## He was impolite in responding to client emails, having been heard in the background to a call I was having to his staff making denigrating comments about me, the client, and complaining that I was making an inquiry. ## He filed a critical court response pleading just _barely_ short (hours short) of the absolute deadline for the judge's staff to receive it. As a result there is reason to believe that the judge did not really read it and as a result what should have been a slam dunk judgment in my favor it appears the judge was uninformed of the issues. And in court, when it became clear the judge had not really read our arguments McCullough did not verbally attempt to correct the judge's misunderstanding. ## When the party we were opposing made to the judge an out rightly false statement about an action he had taken, even though McCullough had in his papers documentary proof that this was false he said nothing and produced no counter evidence. It is extremely disappointing to do all the hours of background research and provide one's lawyer with the ammunition he needs in a hearing, have him standing there earning $400+ per hour and then have him stand there like a dummy and say nothing while events unfold against your interests. I could likely have represented myself more effectively in that court than he did. ## Mr. McCullough's billing policies are draconian and unreasonable. Specifically: I would send and email with information he requested. I would be billed a minimal period of time (about $100) for him sending me that one line email. When I supplied via email the information he requested I would again be bill that minimal charge when he received that email from me. It is important to understand the information he requested was already available in papers I had supplied earlier, and essentially I was being asked to catch the ball for him not finding the info he already had AND being double charged for his or his staff's failure to do their own clerical work and filing properly. # He also made a bad judgment call by counseling us to not make a reasonable/palatable settlement offer to the other party involved. Any lawyer can make a bad judgment call, but when he does it should be duly noted. Mr. McCullough is not unknowledgeable of estate law. And he or his staff did clearly put in substantual time on the case. That was not the problem. He just didn't seem motivated or interested enough or alert enough to do what he needed to do to represent me well, and interms of cost/benefit ratio I could not recommend him as a good bet.

This Lawyer/tax preparer is not responsive and doesn't do what he says he is going to do. I would recommend using someone that can be reached and does what he is supposed to do and when he is supposed to do it. He should not be practicing law or doing taxes for people. He is not professional at all.

What a Tax Lawyer Can Do for You

A tax lawyer specializes in the complex area of tax law, offering legal advice and representation on matters related to tax compliance, disputes with tax authorities, and tax planning. Tax lawyers help individuals, businesses, and organizations navigate the intricacies of federal, state, and local tax laws. They ensure that clients are compliant with tax regulations, minimize tax liabilities, and represent them in audits, appeals, or disputes with tax authorities such as the IRS.

Whether you need assistance with personal taxes, corporate tax strategy, or resolving an audit, a tax lawyer can protect your rights and help you manage your financial responsibilities.

When Should I Hire a Tax Lawyer?

Hiring a tax lawyer is advisable in several situations where tax issues are complicated, disputes arise, or legal strategies are necessary to manage tax liability. Common reasons to hire a tax lawyer include:

  • Tax audits or disputes with the IRS: If you are facing an audit or have received a notice of deficiency from the IRS, a tax lawyer can represent you and defend your rights during the process.
  • Tax debt relief: If you owe back taxes or face significant tax liabilities, a tax lawyer can help negotiate a payment plan, settlement, or Offer in Compromise with the IRS.
  • Tax planning for businesses or individuals: A tax lawyer can advise on strategies to minimize tax liabilities through legal deductions, credits, and other tax-saving mechanisms.
  • International tax issues: If you have foreign assets or income, a tax lawyer can help you comply with international tax laws, such as the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) or Foreign Bank Account Reporting (FBAR) requirements.
  • Tax fraud or evasion accusations: If you're being investigated or charged with tax fraud or evasion, a tax lawyer can provide a defense and negotiate with the authorities to minimize penalties.
  • Corporate tax law compliance: Businesses, especially large corporations, benefit from the expertise of a tax lawyer who can handle complex issues such as mergers and acquisitions, employee benefits, and international tax planning.
  • Estate and gift tax planning: A tax lawyer can help you minimize estate taxes and ensure your assets are passed on efficiently through trusts, wills, and other tax-efficient structures.

Hiring a tax lawyer early can prevent costly mistakes and ensure you are fully compliant with all applicable tax laws.

What Does a Tax Lawyer Do?

A tax lawyer provides a wide range of services to assist clients with tax compliance, tax planning, and legal disputes. Their key responsibilities include:

  • Tax planning and advisory: Helping individuals and businesses plan their tax strategies to reduce liability, avoid penalties, and maximize deductions and credits.
  • Representing clients in tax disputes: Defending clients in disputes with the IRS or state tax authorities, including audits, appeals, and collections actions.
  • Filing Offers in Compromise: Negotiating settlements with the IRS for clients who owe more than they can afford to pay.
  • Handling tax litigation: Representing clients in tax court or other legal proceedings if a tax dispute escalates beyond the administrative level.
  • Estate and gift tax planning: Advising clients on how to structure their estate to minimize estate and gift taxes, including creating trusts, family partnerships, or charitable giving plans.
  • Assisting with tax fraud investigations: Defending clients accused of tax fraud, evasion, or criminal tax offenses.
  • International tax compliance: Advising clients with offshore assets on U.S. tax compliance and reporting requirements, including FATCA and FBAR.

How Are Tax Lawyers Paid?

Tax lawyers typically charge for their services in various ways, depending on the complexity of the work involved and the nature of the legal assistance required. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many tax lawyers charge by the hour, especially for complex cases or ongoing legal work such as audit defense, tax litigation, or corporate tax planning. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as preparing a legal document, filing an Offer in Compromise, or handling a routine audit, some lawyers charge a flat fee.
  • Retainer: For businesses or individuals with ongoing tax needs, a lawyer may require a retainer, which is an upfront payment used to secure the lawyer’s services and billed against as work is completed.
  • Contingency fee: In rare cases, particularly when negotiating settlements or resolving tax debts, a lawyer may charge a contingency fee based on the outcome of the case. This means they only get paid if they succeed in reducing your tax liability.

Always ask about the fee structure during the initial consultation to avoid surprises and ensure you understand how the lawyer will charge for their services.

How Much Does a Tax Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a tax lawyer depends on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the specific services required. Here are some general cost estimates:

  • Simple tax issues: For straightforward cases such as filing an Offer in Compromise or handling a routine audit, fees may range from $2,000 to $7,500.
  • Complex tax disputes: For more complicated cases, such as defending against tax fraud accusations, handling a significant IRS audit, or resolving international tax issues, costs can range from $10,000 to $50,000 or more, depending on the time and effort involved.
  • Hourly rates: Tax lawyers typically charge between $200 and $600 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or cases involving high-stakes outcomes.
  • Flat fees: For specific services, such as tax planning for an estate or preparing a legal document, a flat fee may range from $1,000 to $10,000, depending on the complexity of the task.

Always get a detailed estimate of fees during your consultation so you can plan your budget accordingly.

Top Questions to Ask a Tax Lawyer

Before hiring a tax lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your situation. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with tax law?
Ensure the lawyer has specific experience handling cases or issues similar to yours, whether it’s IRS disputes, corporate tax planning, or estate taxes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify the lawyer’s fee structure - whether it’s hourly, flat fee, or retainer - and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your situation and the possible outcomes, such as tax reductions, settlements, or litigation results.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Find out if the lawyer has experience with issues similar to yours, such as international tax compliance, criminal tax defense, or complex estate planning.
  5. What is the timeline for my case?
Ask how long it will take to resolve your tax issue or dispute, as some tax matters can take months or years to fully settle.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work. Clarify who will be handling your case day-to-day.

How to Check the Credibility of a Tax Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable tax lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for specific tax law expertise: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in tax law and have handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s expertise and service.
  • Ask for references: A credible tax lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can vouch for their ability to handle complex tax matters.
  • Look for professional affiliations: Membership in organizations like the American Bar Association’s Section of Taxation or the National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP) can indicate that the lawyer stays current with tax law developments.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with a tax lawyer, it’s essential to come prepared with all relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Tax returns and records: Bring copies of recent tax returns, especially those related to the issue you're facing.
  • IRS correspondence: If you’ve received notices from the IRS or state tax authorities, bring all relevant documentation.
  • Financial records: Bring records of income, expenses, assets, and any other relevant financial documents that the lawyer may need to understand your tax situation.
  • List of questions: Prepare a list of questions to ask the lawyer about your case, the legal process, and the potential outcomes.
  • Timeline of events: Provide a clear timeline of any interactions with the IRS or tax authorities, including audits, notices, or payment demands.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and help the lawyer assess your situation effectively, providing you with the best legal advice moving forward.
