I hired Ms. Gagarin to help me with the J-1 waiver application. While I had worked with immigration lawyers before, I had certain expectations regarding client-lawyer communication, however, Ms. Gagarin made me quite uncomfortable by the unwillingness to hold open dialogue on the matters that were most important to me. In response to my tougher and more delicate questions, Ms. Gagarin often said that she was either unwilling or unable to comment, which made me feel uncofmortable and marginalized. For a certain period of time I faulted myself for not asking the right questions. However, when lack of desired communication led me into a costly and painful mistake, I decided to speak with other attorneys to see if I could get the answers I really wanted to have. After speaking with three more attorneys, I realized that all of them were willing to hold a much needed discussion on the most delicate details of my case. I received ample information and thorough scenario analysis with possible outcomes. If I was able to have this kind of an open discussion with Ms. Gagarin, I would be able to avoid unfortunate mistakes and/or better prepare for various outcomes. I can't say that the experience of working with Ms. Gagarin was bad. I suppose that in a case of a straight-forward application process, Ms. Gagarin would do well. However, my needs were not fully met and I found that I could get much more nuanced approach that accounts for all my case complexities with another attorney.
