I read the past review about Jaime before calling him and knew immediately I'd like this guy and what do you know, 10 minutes into the call, he has me cackling on the phone. I've spoken to dozens of lawyers at this point about my landlord-tenant case, but I can say that out of all these people, Jaime truly cares for your wellbeing. Not only could he relate to the issues I've been dealing with, but he also shows compassion towards me, and is honest, transparent, and thoughtful in his responses. You'll find lawyers that want to take your money and rake up the charges, but I can tell he'd spend the diligent time fighting for my rights to ensure I can sleep soundly at night. I'm still figuring out my next steps in this case, but he's the first person I'd call to move forward with! Thanks Jaime!!!

Jaime is a beast at this. I called this man with a situation that had me so mad i couldn't even explain to him correctly . I hung up because at this point i was so mad that im sure he could not understand me. He kindly called me back. I yelled at this man from the top of my lungs assuming he was going to treat me as other attorneys i tried calling prior to Jaime. Some even saying i dont understand you, you sound chinese. This man took his time to research and recommend me some actions i should take towards my situation. Somthing other attorneys could not provide me with. He did all this for free ! I suggest you stop the search and give this homie a call .

Jaime spent one hour and 12 minutes on the phone with me painting the reality of the legal system here in NY for a naïve dork who just moved here and was scammed. He was direct (one big reason I just moved back to the East Coast) and helped create a new angle that may help me with my challenge before I have to jump and swim in a whole heap of bureaucratic mess I would prefer not to play in. I hope I never have to play with the law again after I settle into my life here in the big apple. I felt there were enough things I experienced in my conversation with Jaime that would lead me to trust him. He tells stories in a way that truly helped me to see some of what I need to see. He is straight forward and blunt and I could detect enough heart in him that would see him as someone with whom I would like to team. Thank you for your time tonight Jaime. Best, Rhena

I was fortunate to have Attorney Lathrop represent me ( a property owner) in a case against the Dept. Of Buildings for summonses that were unjustly issued. Thank god that I selected Jaime as my attorney because I would not have been able to handle or navigate the purposely confusing and complicated trial and hearing process without him. He took charge Immediately and informed me of a default judgement that was issued that I had no idea of. If I didn't have him I definitely would've had to pay this exorbinant fine. From the initial consultant, I knew that Attorney Lathrop was the right person to represent me; he was transparent, assuring, professional and knowledgeable. I surmised that he would be an assertive advocate and I felt confident and cared for throughout his representation. My summons problem was escalating with representatives showing up and demanding entrance only to issue additional improper summonses which left me feeling intimidated and harrassed. Attorney Lathrop took care of the problem, represented me at trial and persisted until the all summonses were dismissed. I highly recommend Attorney Lathrop and I have permanently added his number in my rolodex.

I have been a client of Jaime Lathrop, Esq., (Jimmy), since 2015. My house has been in my family for just short of seventy years. Our family consists of educators, an architect, a printer and the youngest is an entrepreneur with a degree in Business Management. We are a family of college educated individuals. Four generations of my family have lived in our house that was built in 1920. This has been our family legacy. I am a senior whose house went into foreclosure due to a series of life altering rents. Needless to say, I was distraught by my constant efforts to desperately navigate my way through these circumstances. However, when this was compounded by a significant loss of income, which was out of my control, it seemed as though I would never be able to regroup. I sought numerous avenues for clarity and guidance. I took recommendations from friends, contacted different housing assistance organizations and attended consultations with numerous attorneys. They simply took info/ retainer with the assurance that they could help me save my family home and nothing further would come of it. Following my numerous disappointments, I was referred to Jimmy by an attorney of a prestigious law firm on Court Street in Brooklyn. This attorney said to me, “I am sending you to the best attorney I know, who can deal with a plethora of mortgage/ homeowner and tenant issues. I would use Jaime Lathrop, without hesitation for my own family members because of his knowledge, experience and reputation in the courts.” She was absolutely correct! When it comes to dealing with those mortgage companies and developers, Jaime Lathrop goes above and beyond in the pursuit of a successful outcome. He leaves no stone unturned. As his client, I realized that I needed to refrain from constantly contacting him for updates about my case. I backed off and allowed him time to expose the contradictory and illegal motions that the corporations’ attorneys would work to implement so convincingly. He is not at all swayed by wealthy bullies. He consequently kept me updated regularly of any pressing matters at hand. Some may mistake his candid, direct manner seasoned with honesty, for arrogance, as I read in one of the reviews. However, Jaime Lathrop is a shark in the tank! He refuses to succumb to the intimidating tactics of his courtroom opponents. His integrity always prevails. Jimmy has fought for my generational home with a steadfast vengeance I feel this effort must be acknowledged. If I could give him 10 stars for his tenacity and implementation of knowledge alone, I would. I will continue to refer Jaime Lathrop to friends and acquaintances. In these hard times, many are in dire straights and feeling desperate just as I was. It was a breath of fresh air that I could address the issues at hand with someone of integrity like Jaime Lathrop.

I was looking for a lawyer to help me with the sale of my first house. I did know where to go so I did an internet search and found Mr. Miller's web site. It was really informative, so I gave him a call. Mr. Miller was terrific and since that time he has been my whole family's attorney. When my wife was injured in a car accident, thank God he was there to help us; when my aunt died he got us through probate; when my son got divorced his firm made sure that things were settled in a fair and reasonable manner. In short, if you are looking for a true family law firm in the heart of Brooklyn, New York, you can ask for none better.

I was recommended to Mr. Miller by a friend when I had some trouble with the police a while back. The police had grabbed me off the street and arrested me for a crime I did not commit - and when I asked to speak to a lawyer - they beat me up so badly that I wound up in the hospital for two weeks. I cannot recommend anyone more highly than Mr. Miller as a top flight criminal and civil attorney. Not only did he prove my innocence, now we are negotiating a substantial civil settlement with the city for the injuries caused by the police. This is why I call Andrew Miller Brooklyn's Best.

I was filled with trust in Aziz Juraev and confidence in his professionalism from the very first consultation with him. This was the first lawyer, at the very first conversation with whom, I had a feeling of confidence in the outcome of the trial. And this despite the fact that he did not promise mountains of gold and did not persuade him to become his client. From the moment the contract was concluded until the judge made a decision, I never doubted my choice. Throughout my journey, Aziz and his team guided me in the best possible way. All documents were submitted on time. During consultations with Aziz and Alexander, I was able to imagine how the court hearing was going and how to behave at it, and I was able to believe that my case was not without hope for success. They instilled in me faith in the American justice system, which can accept even words without indisputable documentary evidence as an argument. All this is possible due to the fact that judges are people too and believe in humanity. At the trial itself, Aziz behaved like a true professional. I am very glad that I made the right choice by choosing Aziz Juraev as my lawyer. I am sincerely grateful to Aziz and his entire team.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Brooklyn, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
