Attorney David Shapiro is superb. Throughout the entire process of our real estate matter, he has been consistent, great and effective; most importantly extremely professional. We would highly recommend his law firm to anyone who is having a complicated real estate issue. His assistance was greatly appreciated.

David shapiro and his team is the best. They dismissed my 2 points ticket that took place in the bronx on the second schedule because i was late for my first hearing. Very affordable and profession. Definitely recommended to my friends and family. Thank you David.

I was referred to his law firm which includes Mr. Steven Gildin and Mr. Zelenitz by Prepaid Legal thinking that they should be at least good if not outstanding. I was completely wrong. I would not say they did anything incorrect. But, I can't help thinking a free attorney can probably do better than them. They never returned my phone calls and were very slow replying my emails if they replied at all. As a member of Prepaid Legal system, they are supposed to offer a discount. But, later I learned their fees even after discount are no better if not more than what the other attorneys I found myself would charge. My case was dismissed after I later hired a real attorney.

You can't go wrong with choosing Scott Bookstein. He's a very aggressive lawyer that gets the job done. He will fight hard and go above and beyond in advocating for you. A very experience lawyer that will explain every detail of the law and breakdown your case in a way you can understand. He was my son's second lawyer since we had to change lawyers. If it was not for Scott my son's case would have dragged on. The bottom line is he will go hard to represent you and get you favorable results.

I had a felony charge back in 2013 and had another lawyer who said my only option was 5 years probation or jail time. I was lucky enough to find Mr. Bookstein who took my case and immediately I saw that it was the best decision ever. He was able to negotiate with the DA which extremely affected the outcome of my case. I was offered one year probation, which after successful completion, all charges were dropped to just a misdemeanor. He saved me by preventing my permanent record from being scarred with a felony charge. There was nothing special about me or my case, and he didn't know me at all. However, he treated me like a best friend, was always available to talk, and handled my case with great care and professionalism. It was an extremely favorable outcome and WAY BETTER than any other lawyer was able to offer, or accomplish. Bottom line, if you want an experienced lawyer that works hard to get you the best possible outcome, Scott Bookstein is the #1 choice.

I must say meeting David Joseph Blondell was such a up lifting feeling knowing he actually listens to his clients and wants to help them from the heart not just for the pay. He went out his way more then once to make sure I received the right information and made sure I took the right steps to help my situation. I have referred numerous clients to James over the years. I worked with him for many years in the DA's Office and as a fellow criminal defense attorney. I no longer practice criminal law. When i get a call asking for the best of the best: knowledge, patience, intelligence, integrity, experience, I recommend James because he is honest and the attorney i would use if god forbid a family member of mine needed representation.

James defended me for a felony charge and was able to get it reduced to a disorderly conduct plea deal. He was patient, knowledgeable, and communicative throughout the 6 month process and very responsive to both phone calls and texts. James has decades of experience with the Queens court system and it definitely shows. He thoroughly explain the court process every step of the way and let me know all my options throughout the ordeal. I was referred to James by the New York State Bar Association and feel very lucky to have found him. If I ever need a criminal defense attorney again, I would go to James again without a doubt.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Kew Gardens, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
